Silver pieces is the predominant form of currency.

To simplify what each character has.  It is what your starting rate is.    For example a temptress starts with 100 sp + 10d6.   Then just x that total by 4 to get your starting wealth.   Also do not forget to pick one of the starting equipment packages listed on page 78.     Also on that page is listed the starting wealth packages for each class.   Again what you roll and what base is added times that by 4 to get what each player starts with.

When I did my character sheet, I did it for only one year. With the extra 600 silver, Eldgrim would buy a mail shirt (300 sp). I'll change my character sheet. He will keep the remaining silver to purchase things as the game progresses.

Game rule any silver over 50 sp gets pissed away while you party, Conan-verse doesn't have heroes and such planning ahead much but they love to party when they get a haul.  ;D

I suggest invest in the best sword coin can buy or layering your armor to get as much protection as you can and such, I plan to buy a good personal slave and some jewelry and skimpy silks and well other things to use up my coins to get down to one pouch of 50 sp or less.

Going to finally get my character up tomorrow. My health is not great and the increase in blood pressure from yesterday and today has not been kind.

Don't rush,  take your time.   Your health is more important.

Hi all, I thought I'd throw together a character since it's been a while since I played Conan!  I'm quite well versed with this incarnation of the d20 Conan and have most, if not all, of the source books for it, so you have questions, feel free!

Name: Valerian
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Race: Hyborian (Kothian)
Class: Nomad 1, Thief 3
Code of Honor: Mercenary

Description: Valerian is athletic and hard bodied, with the strong arms of a warrior.  Possessed of dark straight hair like most of his kinsmen, Velerian is especially proud of his mane and takes care to keep it well-groomed and lustrous.  Though technically Hyborian, the features of his Shemitish heritage is a bit more prominent than most, though he has retained the tall build and grey eyes of a distant Hyperborean ancestor.

Personality: Valerian is well known for his mercurial moods; his ability to jump between black rage and jovial laughter can be especially discomfiting to those who don't know him well.  Underlying this facade is a man of deep passions who throws himself fully into whatever he does, and happily facing the consequences of his actions without ever regretting his initial decisions - the past is past and cannot be taken back; one can only look to the future.

Though impulsive in his early years, Valerian has since become a more grounded individual.  He is still apt to live large and free, but has developed a sense of personal pride in response to the wild degeneracy he observed during his time in Shadizar.

Sexuality: Heterosexual for the most part.

Role in troupe: Driver, muscle, and ritualistic fire dancer.  Information gatherer.

Motivations: Valerian is his own source of motivation - as a sensate, he lives for the moment and he lives for variety - as long as he is not languishing in any one particular area without diverse experiences, he has few complaints.

Backstory: Valerian grew up an orphan on the streets of Khorshemish and quickly took to the life of a thief; smuggling, horse-stealing, banditry, temple-robbing - whatever he needed to do to make ends meet.  Not the greatest in his craft by any means, Valerian did possess a certain characteristic flair and discipline above that of his fellows that earned him a reputation as a man of daring and standards (as much a thief could garner at any rate).

A few months after a very successful heist in Shadizar, Valerian found himself cornered by strange assassin-women.  Rather than be stabbed and left to die ignominiously in the back of the alley like he expected, he was instead subdued and clubbed unconscious and when he woke up, he found himself in the home and presence of a foreign noblewoman.  As it turned out, the Lady Zhian was an exile from the courts of distant Khitai for having ambitions exceeding her lowly station as a woman, and Valerian had come to her attention when he had displayed the audacity to steal from one of her newly founded temples, which she had furnished in dedication to her strange, foreign gods.  Rather than have him flayed for the temerity, she offered him a job.

For several years, Valerian worked in Shadizar as Lady Zhian's secret agent and personal procurer, 'acquiring' objects and items from others that his employer wanted, or else planted 'evidence' to discredit rivals, and was rewarded with wealth and almost anything he could have asked for, including the bed of his employer.  Although treated well, Valerian was never one to take anything at face value and surreptitiously investigated his employer whilst he did so.  He was less than thrilled to discover that Lady Zhian was a practitioner of the black arts, whose plans were build a vast empire built from blood sacrifice and ruled by sorcery, created from the distant lands of Khitai, Lemuria, and Vendhya welded together.

After a particularly torrid night, Valerian stood over the slumbering Lady Zhian and drew a dagger to put an end to things, but found that he could not slay the sleeping woman.  Whether it was due to a reluctance instilled in him over the years or some spell she had placed on him to prevent such a possibility, either thought filled him with dread.  Gathering whatever possessions he could snatch up within the several nervous minutes that followed, Valerian was quick to slip out of the expansive estate, and was shortly after banging on the door of a horse trader.  The man refused to open at such a late hour until Valerian shook his coins, pointing out that he was alone and not a native of that wicked city. Before midnight, he was thundering down the road by horse out of Shadizar and out of Zamora.

Valerian waited for a few months to see if his presence would be missed, but with no crimson clad agents sent his way for retribution, he finally began to relax.  Just to be safe, he decided it was best to keep on the move, which eventually led him to the caravan of Rajni Bhatu.  Despite being with the caravan for only a few months, Valerian managed to develop some form of almost familial attachment to it that he never seemed to be able to do with the company of cutthroats he associated with in his youth or the blind devotions of Lady Zhian's cult.

On & Offs: Generally, same as player's.

Thanks for the information. I actually had the wrong price for a mail shirt (it is 400 instead of 300) so I will fix and buy a Koth superior quality Scale Corslet which costs 300 sp. Then I will buy somee other items as well. I will buy a work horse, pack saddle, bit and bridle, chest which would cost an additional 80 sp. The chest is for storing mail shirt, steel cap, grappling hook, and rope. Finally I would buy  a superior quality battle axe and broadsword which would cost 250 (sword) and 10 (battle axe). Total additional money spent would be 300 + 80 + 250 +10= 640 sp.

The results from dicebot were: Roll Result: greypsychman rolled: 10d6, Comment: Conan money, Result: 1, 6, 6, 5, 3, 2, 4, 3, 6, 4, Total: 40

So he would still have 35 silver left. I will adjust his character sheet.

Just to pop a few tips character creation in Conan:

  • Based off the old 3.5 system, everyone gets x4 skill points at 1st level to allocate (rather than a +3 bonus as Pathfinder grants to class skills).  Skill gained after 1st level as normal.

  • It costs 2 skill points to increase a non-class skill by 1 rank.  Regardless, all skills have a maximum allocation of your level + 3.

  • Skill points gained by virtue of high Intelligence results in more versatile skill points - those skill points can be allocated to any skill as though they were class skills.

  • You gain 2 free ranks in any skill designated as your race's Background Skills.

  • Starting languages are your race's automatic language(s), plus bonus languages equal to your Intelligence modifier.  You also gain 1 bonus language of your choice (barring GM veto) at 1st level and every other level thereafter (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, etc...)  There is no 'common' tongue in Conan, and most people learn to speak many languages (many of which have common roots).

  • You favored class(es) grants you bonus feats at 1st, 5th, and 10th level.  By example, if your favored class is Soldier, at Soldier 1st level you gain a bonus feat of your choice; thereafter you add 4 levels of Thief making your character 5th level, but you gain no bonus feat since Thief is not your favored class; moving on, you add another 4 levels of Soldier, making you a 9th level character and you gain your 2nd bonus feat for favored class since you are now a 5th level soldier.

  • Standard HP increase stops at 10th level.  From 11th level onward, you gain a solid increase based on the hit die of the class you are attaining (+1 hp for a d6, +2 for a d8, +3 for a d10), and no longer add you Constitution bonus to the HP (though Constitution increases will retroactively increase HP for the first 10 levels)

  • There is no Weapon Finesse feat - players choose whether to attack with brute force (Str) or with finesse (Dex).  Attacking with STR increases your weapon's Armor Piercing value by your STR modifier.  When attacking using brute strength, if you inflict 20+ damage on your opponent, their armor's DR value is reduced by 1d4 points.

Attacking with finesse, you never add your STR to the Armor Piercing value of the weapon, but if your attack roll exceeds your opponent's defense modifier by an amount equal to the armor's DR, the armor is completely ignored.  Also, attacking with finesse never damages armor.

Edit 1: Oh, and yes to co-GMing if you're still looking ESG!

Edit 2: Initiative = Dexterity modifier + Base Reflex Save

I suspect both would be welcome, but the fencer concept would be easier to play.  If you're looking to do a support character and group's go-to person for warding off the supernatural, then going the way of the Scholar should come with reasonable ease of play (which sounds like it with the wise-woman idea).

Combat-oriented scholars are a trickier proposition - the vast majority of 'combat magic' is usually the province of dark magic and puts your character at risking corruption.  Magic-users in Conan don't tend to mow down their opponents with blasts of fire and lightning though - they are the kind of people who would summon a demon and send it to kill their enemy, or else conjure a plague where their enemies live.  That said, in a one on one fight, a suitably prepared (and powered up) scholar is a deadly foe, but they don't do so well when facing more than one opponent at a time.

That said (even when compared to magic-users from other systems) a well created scholar at their peak in Conan plays less like a wizard and more like a force of nature (consequently they were always the most dangerous threats in the Conan stories)

*chuckles*  True there's not a lot of fireballs--unless you count kothic demon fire!

But ripping out someone's heart telekinetically and then ending his corpse to pummel your foes is pretty nasty.

Definitely not the style of a Wise Woman or Cunning Man though.  They're more into nature magic, divination and warding.

Muse

So, I'm looking at two seperate concepts for a Zingaran fencer/dancing girl.

The first is the daughter of a Zingaran swordmaster who taught her his art but still expected her to be obedient and submisive.  When he aranged a marriage to a man she loathed--a noble brat who was the swordmaster's student and potential heir to his school, the girl was outraged.  She stole a sword and ran away to become a dancing girl.  Her class would be Temptress.  Her secret art would be backstabbing, and she'd make heavy use fo the level seven abilty to feignt in combat by flirting.

Do we have enough in this game to start with an akhbitan steel arming sword?  It would be fun if her fiance were tracking her down to ravish, collar, and reclaim his prized blade!

The other concept is a bit more offbeat.  Again, a dancing girl/fencer, and probably Zingaren.  In this case, though, she'd be a scholar!  She'd have initially picked up fencing as a scientific exercise and just gotten good at it.  Her sorcerous background is an Independent, and her reason for becoming a dancing girl in a traveling show that took secret missions was that she was disowned by her family and ousted from the university for dangerous sorcerous research!

I'm a dancer we should do an erotic dance of the love between women as part of a routine when young children aren't around. Oh GM can I next level mind you take puppeteer as a perform skill its not listed but would be a fun one for children if another character or two takes it at a lower level as her assistants. Just thinking of options.

Description: self explanatory

Personality: "           "

Motivations: Perla is trying to get clear of Zingara, see the world, master her swordplay, and make her fortune at the expense of men to arrogant to apreciate her for anything but her body.

Backstory:  The first is the daughter of a Zingaran swordmaster who taught her his art but still expected her to be obedient and submisive.  When he aranged a marriage to a man she loathed--a noble brat who was the swordmaster's student and potential heir to his school--Perla was outraged, in no small part because she wished to be the heir to her father's chool herslef.

Name: Neva
Age: 21
Gender: Female
Race: Zingaran
Class: Scholar 4

Description: (Forthcoming)

Personality: Proud, self confident, dangeroulsy curious, and inteligent verging on arogant.

Sexuality:  Up 'til a year ago, Neva didn't have time for men and never would have thought to make time for women.
"It's anoying.  Every time I start to have a nice inteligent conversation with a man his eyes drop to my cleavage.  Then suddenly instead of hitory or mathematics he's talking about my eyes--which he's not looking at anymore.   Eventualy he starts to touch me.  It makes me feel warm and silly, yes, but I know what happens to girls who let that go on...  I'm a scholar.  I don't have time for men.  I definately don't have time for a baby.  I have my books.  That's it, I' married to my books."
Now Ankhrimun has taught Neva a new kind of dance, and it's opened a whole new world to her...

Role in troupe:  Dancing girl.

Motivations:  "There are things in the universe that I can't learn at the university, secrets forbiden by kings and priests who wish to horde them to themselves.  I'm going to learn them."

Backstory:  Neva is the daughter of Valenso the Architect, who was also a noted swordsman.  He encouraged his daughter in the pursuit of every science from mathematics to fencing.  Valenso even gave her his blessing to use her rich dowry to attend the university in place of marriage.  (To be fair, he had two sons to carry on his name and work.)  Neva's curiousity invetiably lead her to the study of forbiden secrets, and eventualy she was cast out for carrying occult studdies too far.  Rather than go home a spinster, she joined the carnival, offering to perform the dances her mtoher and sister had taught her...
Given to Ankhrimun for instruction, she learned something new and intruiging to go with it...

I hope I did not miss this...

I would love to make an application for this game. (I know Conan 2ed and LOVE World of Hyboria)

Characterwise, I was thinking Khitan Scholar, far on east, as she was last living member of her noble house, and by that, highly sought after slave-wife to imperial officers. Now, associated with Asurans, she had managed to trek to lands of western demons, where noone knows who she is, but her formal knowledge and oriental magic works on her favor.

(or if no scholars allowed, then maybe temptress from Stygia)

Scholars are allowed.   As the basis of the story and game.  Is if you read any of the books on the death dealer.   An the troupe he traveled with John Brown the bucko and the troupe of entertainers.

So those in the troupe are those rare dabblers of magical arts that are not corrupt or evil.  Thou there is a chance one could fall down that path still with corruption.

I also love the world of Conan.  So thought it best to run such a concept there.    As my introduction comes from the fact, me and my siblings would read the old savage sword of conan comic magazines complete collection our father has.   Of course cleaning out his storage at home.  He came across that collection and me and my family being the closes, I got the collection to the dismay of my brothers.

Anyways go with the Kithian concept if that is your first choice and what you want to play.   As for the temptress we already have one from same kingdom.   As Rubyslippers character is one from Stygeria.

#74
Name: Chan from House Zung-li
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Race: Khitai
Class: Scholar 4

Description: Chan is perfect specimen of Khitai beuty. Her skin is porchelin white, her hair eben black reaching her buttox. Her chect is flat, compared to western women, but its well portioned to her frame.
She is 4´8 and weights less that wet dog. Her green eyes are bright as emeralds and her lips blood red.

Personality: "Calm, enigmatic, mysterious"

Sexuality:   "Virgin, but bisexual"

Role in troupe: Diviner and Fortuneteller

Motivations:  Chan hides her heritage, by plending into the Troupe. She knows there might be an slim change her comppanionship with Cult of Asura might have been known to Imperial agents and they might be after her.

Backstory:  House Uzekawa was overrun by corrupted imperial officials and her family butchered before her very eyes. Only reason she is still free, was the fact that there was traveling monk residing at her fathers court. The monk was infact hidden agent of Asura, and knew the wierding way. When the assault happened and Zung-Li house was cut down to last girlchild, Asurite freed her from the coming forced marriage and stole her into the night. Years she followed the silent monk and toke bits from his wisdom, learning oriental ways and ways to bend minds of lesser men.

Three years ago, monk and Chen part ways, as the monk initiated her to the Cult of Asura. To seek out lost lores, preserve them and learn from them, and fight injustice where ever it raised its corrupted head.

Armed with her knowledges and skills with the wierding ways, Chen seeked out place for herself. She could not return to Khitai, so the westernlands was her prison. But as western folk did not know magic, it gave her an edge. She seeked out vagabonds and charlatans and fit right in. She was, in best of terms, real diviner, among thousand fakes.
