Samurai Jack Season 5 Hype Thread!
« on: February 06, 2017, 03:29:36 PM »
So this just dropped a few hours earlier.

Needless to say, I have never been more excited before for the return of this show than I am now. For the past year hearing that Samurai Jack was being revived was awesome but now having a full trailer? Beyond awesome!

So I'm starting this thread up to see if anyone else is hyped for the darker adult focused conclusion to Jack's story.

I heard he's suppose to make a comeback!

One thing I and plenty of others have noticed is Jack is missing his sword. I'm really curious the story behind that!

I just hope the clips we saw were only from the first or second episode and haven't given too much away from the rest of the season.

Agreed. Its supposed to only be a ten episode season if I'm right so it may have been only one or two episodes worth of footage we saw in the trailer. I'm just glad they didn't spoil anything concerning the final fight against Jack and Aku in the trailer. I want to go into that blind.

Kinda wondering who they'll get to voice Aku.  I know they got a pretty decent fellow to take over Iroh when Mako died.

I noticed the clip with Jack having a sword/dagger in his side with quite a bit of blood. I know the original series followed what TMNT tends to do in making the majority of the villains robotic in some way. That way they could get around the ratings and time slot issues with children seeing massive amounts of blood in heavy fight scenes. Instead of seeing human blood and limbs flying everywhere, it was just oil and wires. With Adult Swim taking over Samurai Jack, I'm excited to see that they might be taking the theme of the show more seriously than it was before (not that it didn't have a serious tone before, but they are adulting it up a little).

I'm so excited for this.

I'm going to have to research how to pick it up here in Scotland. I have memories that Adult Swim channel share with another broadcaster but can't find them right now. Hopefully it'll come to Netflix or Google Play.

Some fans are speculating that while Jack's appearance and lack of sword is what will be the initial appearance for most of the season. After losing all of his armor as seen in the trailer and regaining his sword. Some are expecting him to don his white robe once again and face Aku one last time in his classic look.

If you pause the video at the top of the thread at 0:25, I just noticed there is a katana on the back of the horseman. It could possibly be Jack's.

Might want to put a spoiler tag on that.

Three more amazing moments from Samurai Jack:

1. Aku challenges Jack to a final showdown (Jack vs. Aku).

2. The "Winter" and "Spring" sections from the award-winning episode The Four Seasons of Death.

And now Jack is truly back. With the first episode out here is my review below. Don't click if you don't want spoilers

Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

The transition from hand drawn to the new computer can be seen in a few instances but the animation still holds up well and still has the Samurai Jack vibe to it despite this.

Despite being only half an hour long there was plenty of content that in my opinion didn't feel overdone. We see most of Jack's new arsenal on display, the origins of the masked women from the trailers and get our first look into Jack's PTSD (something Freud would probably have a field day with.) While its clear we don't have the full story yet on what's going on in Jack's head or the full circumstances on his situation it was a great way to bring the audience up to speed on what happened in the fifty years in between in the short amount of time and left room to reveal more down the road.

In fact I feel as if this episode is a tribute to the original series. Jack taking on a horde of beetle bots like in the first episode but doing it much easier than his first battle with the older models. A crazy robot villain with strange abilities serving as the baddie of the week. Said machine even breaks the fourth wall with the changes done.

Not to mention the thing I really found interesting was the Daughters of Aku's training scenes. They are truly feeling like the Anti-Jacks. All children trained (Albeitly longer than Jack) since childhood to adults with the sole mission to destroy their "father's" enemy. Its like an inversion of what made Jack into the formidable warrior he is.

We even get to hear Aku briefly despite not making a full appearance, it was long so its hard to tell but right now Greg Baldwin was able to pull off Mako's take on the evil wizard quite well.

Silly Bride. This season still has seven episodes left, not two. It's a ten episode season, so there's still plenty of time for a real ending.

I can definitely see the Scotsman doing just that.  Jack's pity party with himself is all well and good for character development, and I think it's been done really well so far, but, well, the Scotsman doesn't have time for that mamby pamby, diaper wearing, sniveling, hand-wringing, wallowing, simpering self-pity.  A good slap upside the head from him may very well be what Jack needs, someone to just snap him out of it.

This has all been well and good (especially the buff and busty Scotswomen), but one thing that has been on my mind this whole time has been the vision of an older Jack The Guardian of that time portal saw in an earlier season, showing Jack with a crown and a more regal appearance. That always seemed like it was going to be important to the conclusion of the series somehow, but now I'm wondering if it's been let go in favor of the current story.

The recent comic series from IDW used it's final issue to try and shed some light on that story that I found...interesting (particularly since at the time it was the only bit of closure fans might get as the fifth season had yet to be announced), but now that's been confirmed as non-canon by the creator of the series himself, it feels like it's not something that's going to be expounded on.

What a fun trip down memory lane tonight's episode was. I wasn't expecting to see the SAM-MOO-RAI again, of all people. Those three formerly cursed archers have aged almost as well as Jack has too. :o

And I guess now we know how Aku will learn about Jack's missing sword, although it doesn't look like that'll be a problem for too long.

That aside though, DAYUM Ashi's new look is all kinds of fine. To quote Jack himself; "I like your hair, and your clothes."  XD

I'm not all that surprised to see that the Guardian and his Time Portal are gone. Aku did say he'd gotten them all, after all. There's only one episode left now. It's almost time to see how it all ends. I'm a little worried that it'll be a bit rushed though. They have to deal with Ashi and the final battle between Jack and Aku, the Scotsman and his hot daughter army, and the resolution to it all in just 22 minutes or so. That's a lot for just one episode.

RIP Scaramoosh.

I agree. It was a rushed ending. It should have been an hour long, and maybe helped us have some closure, show the future with all the characters having a happy ending.

But for what we got...im happy. I liked all the callbacks to older episodes. Not many shoes get to allow us closure, and i'm happy we got that with this. :)

I'm rather torn on the outcome of Samurai Jack.  I don't know, it just felt... strange to me.  The first few episodes were really, really good.  Episode 2 was especially tense and nail-biting, and I can't remember the last time I actually was on the edge of my seat when watching a cartoon.

Honestly, I think that in some ways for me, the show was just not going to end in a satisfying way no matter what the writers did.  I will admit that straight up.  That's not to say that the season wasn't good, it certainly was, but I actually felt okay with the show originally ending on a cliff-hanger.  Sure I wanted to know how it ended, but at the same time now that I have actually seen the end, I almost feel like it should have stayed ambiguous.  It felt too... neat, and while the final battle was certainly fun, it just felt sort of weird for it to end.

I don't know, maybe I'm just too picky...
