• This thread has been created as an interest check for the game Guardians of the Galaxy.
• Guardians of the Galaxy is a guided sandbox game that is based on the manga and subsequent anime called Sailor Moon.

Overview

Welcome to the Milky Way. Nothing has really changed, just the same galaxy you know and love except for a few key elements. First of all, there are dark forces at play that you never knew existed. Second of all, not everyone is who they seem to be. Among the human race exist eighteen individuals. Thus far they have led ordinary lives, completely unaware of their great destiny. These individuals are the Guardians of the Galaxy (forget about Marvel, we came up with it first). They are the last legacy of a once great empire. They were sent to Earth thousands of years ago when a terrible war broke out. They were the future, the last form of protection in case the great evil ever returned. That day has finally come. That great evil has been awoken and it seeks to take over the entire galaxy. The Guardians have also been awoken after centuries of laying dormant among the people of Earth. Now they must band together and discover their full potential and their true selves. They have companions of the past that have been searching for them, companions that will help to guide them through this turbulent time. This stage is the most crucial one. Like foals learning to walk, this is the best time for a predator to strike.

First things first, no one calls Toronto T-Dot. It's just like how no one calls New York City the Big Apple. Calling it that is a dead giveaway that you're not a local. Our story begins in the great city of Toronto. Nestled on the massive Lake Ontario's northwestern shore, it is Canada's biggest city. The cultural epicenter of the country, it has the second highest population of foreign born residents of any North American city (almost 50%!). It is a multicultural metropolis with both modern and historical elements. It is home to three large post secondary institutions but only one of those matters to our cast of characters.


University of Toronto

Also called U of T by locals and attendees, it is a public research university. Some would argue that it is the number one university in Canada (others would say McGill but what do they know). The Varsity Blues are the athletic teams representing the university in intercollegiate league matches, with long and storied ties to gridiron football and ice hockey. Academically, the University of Toronto is noted for influential movements and curricula in literary criticism and communication theory, known collectively as the Toronto School. The university was the birthplace of insulin and stem cell research, and was the site of the first practical electron microscope, the development of multi-touch technology, the identification of the first black hole Cygnus X-1, and the development of the theory of NP-completeness. By a significant margin, it receives the most annual scientific research funding of any Canadian university.


The Silver Millennium

Long ago the Galaxy was home to a coalition of kingdoms, an Empire whose main ruler was the Empress of the Moon Kingdom. These kingdoms sat on another plane, another dimension if you will that was undetectable to the plane we humans call home. Two Guardians from each planet sat on her Council and together they ruled over the Milky Way. That was until the invasion of Queen Metaria.

With great ambitions for the future Empress Serenity sent an expedition out into the universe to discover uncharted land, what they discovered was another galaxy. It was barren, empty, except for one individual. It was a woman by the name of Metaria. She was lost in a deep slumber, a coma. The expedition returned, taking the woman straight to the Empress and the Moon Kingdom. She did not awake for some time and it wasn't until several months later that she awoke. She told a terrible tale of a disease, one that had wiped out her people. Somehow she had survived, even if the disease had stolen her consciousness for some time. There were a few on the Empress's council that doubted the tale but it was Princess Serenity, the Empress's daughter and heir, that took pity on the woman. Metaria had lost everything, and with the Empress's blessing she gained a place in the Moon Kingdom.

What they didn't realize was that it was Metaria herself who had destroyed her world. Her kingdom had never been one of peace. Instead those in power constantly fought to gain even more power and prestige. When her older brother became King, she began a vicious civil war. It lasted for nearly a decade before she finally lost. Despite losing all her support, Metaria would not accept defeat. Literally backed into a corner, she used her powers to destroy her brother and all those that supported him. The power was stronger than she realized and she wiped out the entire Kingdom, knocking herself unconscious in the process. It was in that state she would remain until she was found decades later.

She inserted herself in the Princess's inner circle, clinging to her like a parasite. All the while she used her corruptive powers to sway others to her cause, her ambitions for a hostile takeover. She laid in wait, looking for the perfect opportunity to launch her violent campaign. When Princess Serenity fell for Prince Endymion of Earth, it caused an uproar. Earth had never been a part of the Moon Empire. The people of Earth feared that they would be annexed. They had always resented the vast Moon Empire so when their precious Prince began to fall for the daughter of the formidable Empress, it caused a planetary uproar. The Empress wasn't exactly pleased herself. It seemed like everyone was against the match except for one person, Serenity's loyal companion Metaria. In fact she secretly set up a meeting between the two. She posed as Serenity and sent a message to Endymion asking him to meet her then she posed as Endymion and sent a message to Serenity. She arrived before either of the royals showed up and hid from view. When Endymion appeared she used her powers to corrupt him so that when Serenity arrived he attacked her. Serenity fought back but the struggle ended up nearly killing the Prince, her take leaving him unconcious. She fled back to the Moon Palace in horror. When the attack on the Prince was discovered Serenity did not lie about her involvement. She said that the Prince attacked her. His family as well as the people of Earth did not believe that their Prince could do such a thing, they considered this an act of retaliation by the Moon Kingdom. The Empress believed her daughter, knowing that her daughter would never harm anyone unless she had no choice. Unfortunately, the damage had been done and a war began.

As the war began between the Moon Empire and the Kingdom of Earth, Metaria grew stronger from the bloodshed and the destruction. She waited until the war was at its height before she attacked the Moon Empire from within with the followers she had amassed during her time at the Moon Palace. The Empire did not expect an attack from within, having focused the brunt of their forces on the border between them and Earth. The Empire had to divide their forces, weakening them on both fronts. Still defeat was not eminent until the Empress received devastating news from the Uranuses. Their precognition powers had allowed them to see the end to the war. Metaria would win. There was no way to subvert that ending. The only thing they could do was properly prepare for defeat. Them Empress and the Council prepared themselves for the final showdown with Metaria. With the help of the celestial companions, she sent away the sixteen Guardian apprentices, her daughter, hoping that she could safeguard them for the future. With the majority of each planet's population completely corrupted by Metaria's corrosive powers, the Empress commanded the Saturns to destroy everything. Everyone and everything was wiped out including the Empress and the Council. Unfortunately, Metaria had prepared herself for such an event, knowing not to underestimate the Empress or her Council members. While she was not able to escape unscathed, she was able to escape death like she had decades ago on her own planet. Only she and a few of her associates survived. They were flung into the farthest reaches of the galaxy, to lie in wait for another day.


State of the Galaxy

Even with the war won, not all of Metaria's followers were destroyed. Beryl, once the fiancée of Endymion before he left her for Serenity, stylizing herself as Queen Beryl, has finally awoken. Her soul is still corrupted, a combination of her hatred for Serenity and Endymion, her grief at his betrayal, and the corrosive corruption powers of Metaria. She has worked to awaken those followers that were left in the aftermath of the war. Even with their awakening, they have waited to properly build their strength before they attack. They have also kept an eye out for the Guardians and the Princess. Beryl has called her group The Dark Agency and with them she plans on both wiping out the new Guardians as well as awakening her mistress, Metaria. To properly awaken Metaria she must await for the Guardian's powers and past selves to be awoken. In their souls lies the key to awakening Metaria. If Beryl is able to kill the Guardians once they are awoken, before they manage to fully grow into their powers, she can extract a fragment from each of their souls and use that power to awaken Metaria.


The Guardians

In times of old there were eighteen guardians in total. Two guardians were chosen to represent each planet, one male and one female. The best and the brightest were chosen from each planet since time immemorial, aided by prophecies given by the Uranuses. These potential guardians were then trained from a young age as apprentices and eventually shadowed their mentors in the Moon Palace. Not only were they trained in their specific roles within the Council but they were also trained to control their powers, powers that would eventually specialize as they aged and grew more experienced. Our current set of Guardians were only apprentices when they were sent away from their world amidst a war but the torch was about to passed to not only them but the Princess as well.

• Princess Serenity of the Moon: The daughter of Empress Serenity and only heir to the Moon Empire, she possesses healing powers and the ability to manipulate light energy. (F)
• Prince Endymion of Earth: The only heir to the Earth Kingdom. He possesses psychic abilities that give him access to powers such as psychometry and life energy healing. (M)
• Mars: Second in Command to the Empress and tasked with the role of Regent in case anything were to occur and the heir was unable to rule. The Martians possess the ability to manipulate fire and heat. (M/F)
• Mercury: The Empress's Lead War Strategists, the Mercuries possess the ability to manipulate earth (i.e. rock, other sediment, metal). (M/F)
• Jupiter: Generals of the Imperial Army, the Jupiters possess the ability to manipulate lightning as well as plants. (M/F)
• Venus: Head of the Empress's Covert Operations Unit, the Venusians possess the ability to manipulate emotions, including the ability to charm others, and darkness. (M/F)
• Saturn: The Saturns work as the Empress's Weapons Developers. They create new weapons technology rather than rely on their own overly destructive powers. Due to the destructive nature of their powers they are seen as advisors to the Empress, like the others. Their powers' dominion is that of destruction, death, and rebirth. With these powers they can do a great many terrible things, including wiping out an entire planet, a star system, or even an entire plane. Not only are the Saturns aware of the gravity of their powers, so are the other Council members and the Empress. The full breath of their powers are only ever employed as a last resort. (M/F)
• Uranus: The Empresses's Seers, the Uranuses possess the ability the ability to manipulate wind and precognition. They also report any prophecies they become privy to due to their precognition powers (i.e. being tasked with the selection of apprentice Guardians). (M/F)
• Neptune: Head of the Empress's Scouts Division, the Neptunes not only act as an early warning system to any troubles that may arise they also possess the ability to manipulate water as well as enhanced speed. (M/F)
• Pluto: The Plutos are tasked with what could be called the Galaxy's most important important job, the security of the Time-Space Door. They hold the key to the door that not only opens to the Milky Way but also to other planes. Their post is a lonely one as they are stationed at the Time-Space door and cannot leave their position unless expressly allowed to do so by the Empress. They possess the ability to manipulate time, space, and the underworld. (M/F)

Celestial Companions

Each Guardian possesses a Celestial Companion. These creatures are wise beings that are centuries old. They have aided their specific companions through many a trial and tribulation but this will be their hardest job yet. The Celestial Companions have been tasked with the locating, training, and safeguarding of of the Guardians.

A celestial companion is a being that is the physical manifestation of a guardian's inner self that takes the form of an animal, native to their respective planet. Celestial companions have human level intelligence and are capable of mental speech with their respective guardian or other companions. While they are bound to their guardian, they are capable of behaving independently of the individual in which they are tied to. Although celestial companions will occasional mimic the appearance and behavior of the creature they resemble, they are not actual animals. True animals are able to distinguish them on sight. Only those chosen as guardian are able to develop a celestial companion. Likewise, when a guardian dies or is stripped of their title, their celestial companion fades away, turning into a dust like substance.

Due to extenuating circumstances, celestial companions have shown the ability to adapt in order to better aid their guardian. Companions are now in possession of three forms (native, domestic, and human).

Native form

• The only form companions has access to in their old life
• Can transform into this at will without their guardians being in their transformed state. Not often used though due to drawing too much attention. Kind of used as an 'oh shit' button
• This form was a replication of one of their guardian's native creatures
• Capable of mental speech with their guardian/other companions

Domestic form

• Better choice for blending in on earth
• Limited to a domestic cat or dog
• Capable of mental speech with their guardian/other companions
• No access to native form's skills

Human form

• Loses access to mental communication
• Has a tendency to still display animalistic tendencies

Things to Know

• Companions can be NPCed. Writers can write their own companions.
• Companions can be PCed. Writers can permit someone else to write their companions. It is up to the writer if they will permit the person to use their current creation as inspiration or create a completely new character.
• It takes a conscious effort to change forms. They will maintain whatever form they possess in their sleep unless something prompts them to do otherwise.
• All celestial companions have a piece of jewelry that grants them the ability to shift into domestic and human form. If they lose this item, they will be forced to remain in whatever form they are currently holding.

Rules & Regulations

• Be considerate and be respectful towards your fellow writers.
• Please keep OOC separate from the IC posts.
• No godmodding another writer's character.
• IC posts must be at least two paragraphs (5 to 8 sentences each).
• Communication is important. Do not hesitate to PM the GM with any concerns or suggestions.
• The GM’s word is law. Players in the game are expected to respect the GM's decisions although I will try my best to be a fair and just ruler.
• Characters can’t be killed without the consent of both the writer and the GM.
• I encourage players to post once a week but I am aware that life can get hectic. If you are having any issues keeping up please make the GM and your fellow players aware of this.
• Guardians of the Galaxy shall be placed in the extreme section due to potential heavy violence when it comes to battle scenes. If your post contains any extreme material please post a warning in the tag header and spoiler any particularly gruesome sections of the post.
• Sex scenes must be written out in the Private Thread.
• Face claims must be of real life models, actresses/actors, singers, and other celebrities. In accordance with E rules, all face claims must be over the age of 18.
• Each player is allowed to have one character.

Frequently Asked Questions


What types of characters are permitted?

All genders, ethnicities, and sexual orientations are welcome although they must be university students at the aforementioned university.

What genre is the game and where will it be placed?

This game can be defined as sci-fi fantasy. It will be in the Extreme section due to possible heavy violence.

What is the setting?

The story takes place in an alternate universe. It is set in the city Toronto, Canada and the characters attend the University of Toronto. The only difference is that the Guardians exist as normal people within the city and that Negaverse agents will intermittently attack them. Our story will begin in February of 2016.

What is the pacing of the game like?

This will be a guided sandbox game so people don’t necessarily have to rush with their posts. That being said the ideal posting speed would be once a week per player. In GM scenes I expect writers to post their characters once a week to keep the scene running smoothly. If people find they do not have the time to catch up they may simply contact me and we can skip their player for that round. In side scenes, the pace is up to the writers that are participating in that scene.

How many characters can I make?

Each writer can have one character in the game.

What powers can my character have?

Each character possesses powers that are linked to their planetary abilities (i.e. the Jupiters control lightning). The characters have three battle moves that are linked to their transformed states which means they can only use them when in that form.

Does my character have to be one of the eighteen Guardians?

Currently I am only accepting character sheets for the sixteen Guardians and the Prince and Princess. Once these roles are filled I may accept character sheets for other types of characters with the exception of the Dark Agency. At the moment all members of the Dark Agency will be GM controlled NPCs.

I keep seeing the word 'plane' used. What does that mean?

A plane is another level of existence. They may exist within the same space and be happening at the same time but they are invisible to each other. Different planes stand parallel to each other which means that they can never intersect. The Time-Space Door that is guarded by the Plutos is not only a portal to the rest of the universe but other planes as well. Our OOC solar system is on another plane than that of the Moon Empire & the Earth Kingdom.

What have the souls been doing all this time before they had been awakened?

The souls have been laying dormant in different bodies for centuries without awakening to their true selves. It is now February 2016 and due to the awakening of the Dark Agency the souls have been "turned on" so to speak.
