Who knew one drunken night could turn into a love affair that would rival Romeo and Juliet, and end just as tragically?  But that's exactly what happened between James Potter and Severus Snape.  Severus was vulnerable after his mother's funeral, and James, having grown up quite a bit, made a kind gesture.  Several glasses of whiskey later the two of them found themselves in what they both thought to be a one night stand at the time.  Severus woke feeling quite guilty about sleeping with one of his best friend's boyfriend, but come to find out, Lily knew of James' leaning toward men, and did not mind sharing him with one other man.  Bit by bit James broke down Severus' walls, and the two were madly in love.  Very few knew of course, especially not Dumbledore, because both men knew he'd probably manipulate the situation.  James only told his two best friends, and while it was hard to keep the peace between Sirius and Severus, they never told another living soul.

Then it happened, Lily and James were killed... or... were they?  Lily had died instantly, but what no one knew was that Dumbledore had arrived at the scene quickly and found James clinging to life by a thread.  Dumbledore saved James' life, but at a steep price.  Instead of letting everyone know that their friend would be all right, he feared reprisal and took James to friends in the United States.  Then he made an elaborate ruse with a very real seeming dead body and kept the secret to himself and kept James under magical lock and key.

Of course, Dumbledore had made a grave mistake and knew he was dying.  He knew if Voldemort was really going to be defeated, it would take the fierceness and battle skill of James to do it.  So, on the night he took Harry to retrieve a Horcrux, he arranged to have James brought to the castle.  He felt there might be an attack on the school, and wanted his best fighter there.  What he didn't know was that James would seek Severus out again to try and rekindle what once was.
