Good points. I will edit all that once I get home from work tonight. On a cell until then: makes eriting difficult. That and I am supposed to be working...

And yeah, my implication was supposed to be that he was boastful, arrogant, neurotic, and prone to poetic excess and exaggeration, but I should make that clearer.

I have an objection. Who the fuck speaks Welsh any more? :P It's ok, I can make that joke, I'm English. :P

Anywho, I don't see any immediate issues with it, but I am rather tired, so...I shall look at it in the morning, and if I still don't find any issues, I will be happy to welcome you aboard! :D

Ok, so, after looking it over again, I don't believe there are any issues that can't be fixed as we encounter them in game, so....welcome aboard! Please send me the code to your bio, and then post in the OOC's to start getting work done on your Yearbook. :D

NAME: Jordan DeSantis

AGE: 25
SEX: Male

APPEARANCE: Portrayed by Clint Mauro

Additional Reference Images
Parent-Teacher Conference
Casual Friday
Chaperoning the Prom
One-on-One Time
Mentally Undressing the Teacher

ORIENTATION: Bisexual

RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Single

TYPE: "The New Teacher" - Journalism & Writing, Photography Club Mentor

POWER THEME: Probability Manipulation - Blessing & Jinx focused.

Current Level: Powerless (Level may not be altered without GM approval)

Power levels not currently attained will be kept in this spoiler in order to prevent confusion.

Neonate
Requires: An event of power.
Newsworthy (Unreliable Passive)  - Jordan is intrinsically tied now to the fates and fortunes of those around him.  He often can simply sense disruptions to the normal field of probability that surrounds a person, place, or object.  Furthermore, he may get an unreliable sense of ways an individual's probabilities are affected by their surroundings.  (For example, he might be quicker than most to realize that a student has a high chance of slipping as they walk across a freshly washed floor.)  This ability is completely unreliable and should never be treated so powerfully as a form of precognition; it is an ability to quickly pick up on the possible cause and effect relationships within the surroundings, nothing more arcane.  In practice, this is largely simply intended to allow Jordan a general idea of how difficult a task he is up against when using his Against The Odds power at high levels.

Against the Odds - With much concentration, Jordan may influence a single, small, and seemingly random outcome that is limited to the physical world.  For instance, a die may roll in his favor, a coin will flip to his desired side, or maybe a spinning bottle will just happen to point to that desired special someone.  At this level of his development, Jordan will not be able to change the outcome if the chances of each possibility are not roughly equal; for example, he will not be unable to cause a coin deliberately weighted towards heads flip to tails.

Amateur
Requires: Neonate Level + Around one in-game month of regular practice,  or (another) unexpected event of power.

Against the Odds (Improvement) - Jordan now requires much less concentration when influencing a single physical instance.   Consequently,  he now has the capacity to influence up to three synchronous or closely-timed events,  such as causing three separate lottery numbers to be drawn.   In order to affect chance, the odds of each outcome must still be roughly equal.

Teacher's Pet - Jordan now possesses the ability to positively alter the probability field around an individual to a minor degree for a completely uncontrolled period that is not to exceed 24 hours.  In order to do so, Jordan must first have a photograph featuring the face of the individual within his possession.  While he may attempt to focus the probability around a single theme, such as 'studying the right material for the exam' or 'opportunities to shine in the big game', correct 'aiming' is highly unreliable at around a fifty percent success rate.  Deletion or destruction of the photograph instantly destroys the effects of this blessing.  During the duration of the blessing, the contents of the photograph slowly shifts to a completely white color, whether online or a physical copy, and may no longer be used for future ability attempts.

Detention - Just as he is able to alter the probability field around an individual positively, Jordan may also negatively influence that field.  In order to do so, Jordan must first have a photograph featuring the face of the individual within his possession.  While he may attempt to focus the probability around a single theme, such as 'poor accuracy' or 'awkward social situations', correct 'aiming' is highly unreliable at around a fifty percent success rate.  Deletion or destruction of the photograph instantly destroys the effect of this hex.  During the duration of the hex, the contents of the photograph slowly shifts to a completely black color, whether online or a physical copy, and may no longer be used for future ability attempts.

Practiced
Requires: Neonate Level + Six in-game months of regular practice, or (another) unexpected event of power.

Against the Odds (Improvement II) - Jordan now is no longer limited to influencing physical events that have roughly equally-chanced outcomes.  Weighted coins can flip the wrong way, guns can jam, and a specific person can be chosen out of a crowd of a hundred.  Pushing against strong odds is exceptionally taxing for Jordan in the form of strong headaches.  Pushing against the odds of 1:5 will likely slightly compromise his focus for a few hours; pushing against odds as high as 1:1000 may leave him with such a disabling migraine that he will no longer be able perform another supernatural feat for a couple days.  Jordan's concentration has continued to improve, so he now may influence up to ten synchronous or closely-timed events, provided that all outcomes have a roughly equal chance of succeeding.

Teacher's Pet (Improvement) - Jordan now possesses the ability to positively alter the probability field around an individual to a moderate degree for a period of 24 hours.  In order to do so, Jordan must first have a photograph featuring the face of the individual within his possession.  While he may attempt to focus the probability around a single theme, such as 'home-run streak' or 'college admissions interview of your dreams', correct 'aiming' is somewhat unreliable at around a seventy-five percent success rate.  Deletion or destruction of the photograph instantly destroys the effects of this blessing.  During the duration of the blessing, the contents of the photograph slowly shifts to a completely white color, whether online or a physical copy, and may no longer be used for future ability attempts.

Detention (Improvement) - Just as he is able to alter the probability field around an individual positively, Jordan may also negatively influence that field.  In order to do so, Jordan must first have a photograph featuring the face of the individual within his possession.  While he may attempt to focus the probability around a single theme, such as 'physical trauma' or 'financial loss', correct 'aiming' is unreliable at around a seventy-five percent success rate.  Deletion or destruction of the photograph instantly destroys the effect of this hex.  During the duration of the hex, the contents of the photograph slowly shifts to a completely black color, whether online or a physical copy, and may no longer be used for future attempts.

Seasoned
Requires: Neonate Level + A year of in game-time regular practice, or (another) unexpected event of power.

Against the Odds (Improvement III) - Jordan's concentration ability has become truly admirable. Odds that once debilitated him when he pushed against them can now be manipulated with relative ease.  He no longer even notices when he pushes against a lower-level odd, such as 1:5.  When pushing his abilities to their max, he is capable of pushing fate against a ratio of up to 1:100,000... at the cost of at least a week of paralyzing sickness and inability to use further powers.   Jordan is now a virtual Plinko-Breaker, and may influence an indefinite number of physical-based synchronous or closely-timed events if each outcome has a roughly equal chance of occuring.

Making My Own News... - Jordan's Teacher's Pet and Detention abilities may now be dispersed into entire probability fields that may not exceed the size of an average classroom.  This allows entire groups to be both blessed or jinxed to a moderate degree, and spaces themselves can become either 'lucky' or 'cursed'.  Jordan may only have one probability field open at any given time, and they naturally dissipate after 24 hours of placement.

(While I certainly do not expect the in-game calendar to push further than this, the possibility of future upgrades will be handled via conversation with the game-master if that ever becomes necessary.)

CHARACTER FLAW:

Fickle Fate - No matter how hard you seek to master fate, it will always remain elusive.  About five percent of the time, Jordan's abilities will simply not work.  Furthermore, any attempt to push destiny towards a similar end within one week of the attempt is considered an automatic fail.  (For example, if Jordan is trying to earn money for himself and he fails at a blackjack table, he may not simply move over to a roulette table and try again.  Any supernatural attempt on his part to address the same underlying intention (get money,) automatically fails during this period.  There will occasionally be the rare instance, where no matter what Jordan does, his powers are unable to affect the fortune of a situation.  This is to account for both the fact that sometimes destiny refuses to change, while other times destiny is able to change... but only when it is good and ready to.

Headaches - When Jordan pushes towards the upper-end of his powers (regardless of what that limit is at any given stage of development), he is likely to suffer debilitating headaches.  This is particularly true when manipulating probabilities with a low likelihood of ever occurring.  While mild headaches may prove only to be a minor annoyance and yield a slight difficulty increase for future power use, if he pushes himself to the limit the cost will be crippling migraines and an inability to concentrate enough to perform future supernatural feats for several days, if not longer.  Jordan's headaches increase in intensity and duration with both the level of power, and the number of powers used in a given time.  For example, at a level of practiced he may be debilitated with a single push against fate at a 1:1000 ratio, though will likely also be debilitated by pushing against fate five times in one day at a 1:100 ratio.

Photographic Evidence - For all blessings and curses, Jordan requires a photo that shows the face of the target he wishes to affect.  Once the ability is over, the photo is ruined and can not been used to produce further effects.  While digital images may be used, 'copies' of a used image may not be utilized.  (Please note:  I realize in the age of Facebook this may not be a huge restraint... but that is why I have other ones.  This is more about personal color that I want to add more than anything.)

Too Old to be a Student, Too Young to be a Teacher -  Jordan's comparative youth to most faculty puts him in a tricky space in between the division of student and teacher.  As an alum, only too many faculty are used to seeing his face on the other side of the classroom.  That enables them to feel both empowered over him, and prevents him from always being treated as one of their equals.  Similarly, while he may have an easier time than many faculty befriending students due to his close age gap, it also means he is not always granted the authority of a teacher. in their eyes.  Some students are more likely to push limits and break rules in his classroom than those in other periods.  If there is an out of control class that can be heard from down the hall, there is a good chance it is Jordan's.  If that was not bad enough, many of their parents see him as little older than their children, which costs him a level of respect.

Previous Modeling Work -  Everyone has to pay the bills, and in Jordan's case that meant doing some low-profile modeling along with an array of other odd-jobs.  While there was nothing too high profile or revealing, the photographers still clearly are portraying him as a sex symbol.  If any old images of his modeling experiences surface despite a low-profile and pseudonyms, it could create another layer of tension between Jordan and the school staff, faculty, students, and their parents.

BIOGRAPHY:  Jordan DeSantis was born the eldest of three boys to an upper middle class family in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago.  His mother and father were University of Chicago faculty members within the Economics Department and Art History Department respectively,  and were strong proponents of raising their children in a way that exposed them to the full scope of the world as much,  and as early,  as possible.  This included early international trips, regular visits to arts and cultural centers, and advocating for their children's involvement in a variety of physical and social activities

From an early age,  it was evident that Jordan was to be the most quiet and serious of the three siblings.   He favored reading and writing over more visual-oriented activities, he preferred running and swimming to team sports,  and responded strongly to stories where injustice and advocacy were central themes.   In part due to their own natural inclinations, and in part due to Jordan's blossoming personality,  his parents opted to enroll him in the Chicago Montessori Academy.  Jordan was a very natural fit for the inquisitive and creative-based curriculum and thrived in the setting.  Despite only two years difference between himself and Joshua, his first younger brother, Jordan lacked the gregarious personality and open nature that won Joshua quick friends.  In many ways Jordan became the classic 'third parent' to Joshua, and then later his brother Kyle.  Consequently school often became a happy place where Jordan could be alone to explore what he wanted without the interruption of his less ponderous siblings.  Swimming and writing would eventually win out as his two biggest passions as a boy, and through those years Jordan would show a natural talent in both.

Jordan's first major obstacles in life would occur at the age of 12, when the Chicago Montessori academy ended and he was expected to integrate into a normal school setting.  Jordan's parents did not foresee the level of difficulty with this transition; however, while academically Jordan ranked very highly in his development, socially he was much less prepared.  Due to his introverted, soft-spoken nature, tendency to self-isolate, and lack of experience with standard education, Jordan was quickly the target of multiple flavors of bullying.  Rather than defend him, his more extroverted, younger siblings often made the situation worse with their own taunting.  Soon, not only were Jordan's grades slipping, but he was sinking into a heavy adolescent depression and the many negative thoughts and actions that accompanied it.

Eventually it would be Jordan's maternal grandfather, Sal Moretti, whom would see the boy's and the parents' struggle, and suggest that he move to his home in New York State for awhile and try a school that was generating quite the positive press lately, Malcolm Wheeler High.  While Jordan's parents were reluctant to try public schooling, especially after his growing emotional instability and failure in private school, but they eventually conceded to Sal's reoccurring suggestion out of desperation.  It would prove to be a life-changing, positive move for Jordan.  Between escaping the taunts of his schoolmates and own brothers, and the lucky support he found in both his grandfather and a faculty member within the writing department, Jordan would eventually thrive.  Sal's retired past-time was photography, and soon Jordan was combining his writing with visual mediums online in the forms of journal posts and zines.  He overcome his social awkwardness by becoming a strong, solid voice in the campus community through the written word.  Eventually that awkwardness would likely fall away, as Jordan would find himself advocating for fellow students who were emotionally troubled.

The faculty member in the writing department -- Dr. Micah Tinch -- had taken personal interest in Jordan due to his promise as a writer, and consequently helped support him through these many changes.  Jordan, in turn, was both inspired by his instructor and harbored more than a few secrets affections for him as his teenage sexuality began to flourish.  Jordan's interests would eventually coalesce into a growing passion and dedication towards journalism; he had oft-lofty ideals of changing the discipline that was already struggling for identity in the Information Age.  He soon declared it his life ambition; among his other high school accomplishments he would be declared head of the school paper, win several writing awards, and eventually gain a full scholarship to Princeton on his academic and social merits.  It was only as he was leaving his life behind to attend the school that he shared an awkward and somewhat late first kiss that he promised would never be spoken of again... namely, with his high school teacher whom he had shared such private crushes with.

While this sexuality came somewhat late, Micah continued his serious focus and demeanor while becoming somewhat of a heart-breaker in his time at Princeton.  The awkward and introverted boy had become a charismatic -- if rather 'sweet' -- young man with quite a handsome countenance; if he was not avid about putting his future as a journalist above all else, he might have even been quite the loyal boyfriend.  Work and advancement always came first, however, which lead to a string of rocky relationships with both sexes.  True to his goals, Jordan would maintain his focus, and even travel abroad to both South America and China in his college career to study there, and write a number of portfolio pieces reflective of his natural talent and dedication.

Graduation was difficult and saw Jordan working odd jobs, including some modeling and waiting tables, looking for his big break.  He finally found it in the form of a dream job position as a writer at one of a major New York City paper.  It would be a short-lived victory though since, despite getting acclaim from his contribution to several stories, the paper would dissolve his position due to the decline of consumers using paper news sources.  Determined, Jordan would try again though would soon find that journalist jobs were a struggling animal throughout the United States.  In the end, the only long-term position he would be able to secure would have him covering popular culture and celebrity news... a position that he likely did not even get due to his credentials, but rather his attractive, camera-friendly appearance for blog entries and the occasional television spot.

While it was a position that paid the bills -and relatively well for a young graduate -- within a year Jordan had sunk into a dark depression.  His relationship was on the rocks and he was edging closer and closer to the despair feelings that he felt as a teenager; Jordan was forgetting how to become happy.  His fate changed once more when he returned to New York state to attend his grandfather Sal's funeral after a difficult battle with lung cancer.  Jordan's intentions were to visit Micah Tinch, his old instructor, and simply thank him for the hope he once had and apologize that his  youthful feelings ended up making a future mentor relationship too awkward to pursue.  In the end it would be Micah that would convince Jordan that he was looking for happiness in the wrong places, and that he should return to Malcolm Wheeler High School since it once was, in many ways, a source of salvation for him.

Micah took Jordan on as an assistant and guest lecturer while Micah pursued emergency teaching credentials with a secretly hesitant heart.  Jordan questioned whether he truly able to teach disciplines that he often felt had turned their back on him when he needed them the most. Still, Jordan found his passions again slowly as he found himself  being able to talk about subjects he wanted to; in turn many of Malcolm Wheeler's students responded strongly to his youthful perspective, easy charisma, and thoughtful disposition.

Jordan would be the most surprised out of everyone after he finished his teaching credentials that Micah revealed that he had been planning on leaving the school for awhile now, wishing to return to the West Coast to be with aging parents.  Before Jordan himself knew what was happening Micah was advocating for him to take the soon-open position on the writing faculty, and encouraging students to speak out in support for the now newly credentialed teacher.  Ultimately, Jordan would be hired, feeling more than a little overwhelmed at the sudden shift in his life.  Still, he determined to press onward, and embrace a new life with new goals.

Miscellaneous:
  • Jordan is an alumni of Malcolm Wheeler, and headed the school paper as a junior and senior.  He was also within the photography club and on the school swim team.
  • Jordan is a Princeton alum, and is willing to pull connections for the right student looking for college admission.
  • Jordan is still an avid swimmer.
  • Jordan is a somewhat unexpected enthusiast of 1970s punk music.
  • Jordan has moderate fluency in both Spanish and Mandarin due to his strong education.
  • Jordan owns a somewhat rare dog breed, an Entlebucher Mountain Dog, which he can be found running with.
  • While he has learned to be quite charismatic and good at public speaking due to necessity, Jordan is a thoughtful introvert at heart.
  • Jordan plays the Spanish Folk Guitar... very poorly.
  • Jordan was involved in a relationship upon moving back to teach at the high school, but it is known much more than he would like that they ended things while he was chaperoning a school prom.
  • Jordan is currently in the position that was held by his own high school mentor, which he still corresponds with via handwritten letter, despite other quicker, more tech-savvy avenues.
  • Jordan is an amateur photographer, and has quite the collection of prints he has collected through his various experiences and travels.
  • Jordan is a long-time sufferer of migraines, which will worsen once he gets his powers.

THEME SONG: "Get Better" by Frank Turner

Writing Promt #3 (Freeform
Name: Jordan DeSantis
Position: Teaching Assistant, Writing & Journalism
Time: Previous School Year, Senior Prom
Location: Gymnasium
Tagging: Kate Cameron

“You do realize that this is the closest thing we’ve come to a night out together in ages…”

Jordan felt creeping warmth reach up from his core and take hold of his cheeks.  This was happening.  He knew it was going to happen soon.  He was starting to even suspect that it was going to happen tonight.  But why did it have to happen here?

…perhaps, an even more interesting question: Why did he always feel strangely complacent when faced with the poor twists in life that he foresaw in his mind, and yet why did he still get so physically ill once they actually unfolded before him?

He looked down at his hands.  Were they so different than when he had walked these very halls, had practice in this very gymnasium, a decade before now?  He felt wretched then; bh didn’t know how to talk to others or make friends.  This place had turned him into something better; it turned that awkward boy into a gifted young man with a golden tongue and award-winning smile.  He walked out of these doors at eighteen feeling like he was a super hero.

Now, at twenty four, Jordan once more felt like that awkward and aimless youth.

“… it’s just time for me to go back to the city… when plans change, people change… it’s best to admit it…"

Jordan sucked in his breath.  No, he was going to remain firm jawed and stoic here; his students deserved at least that from their still-young mentor.  This was the night for them to fall in love, or for them fall to pieces only to be put back together by the faculty into something greater.  Jordan’s time for those transformations had come and went, hadn’t they?

He wasn’t sure where he made a mistake along his path, but he must have made one.  Otherwise he wouldn’t be here now.  Maybe in the next generation he’d be able to at least see success where he failed and figure out where he went wrong.  Maybe there would even be time for him to fix his mistake.

He couldn’t blame the elegantly dressed woman currently facing him, doing her best to paint their imminent break up as ‘a growing opportunity for them both’.  She looked so very, very out of place here with her Gucci clutch and black silk cocktail dress; she had dressed up like they still had the life of decadent city dwellers going for a night on the town… instead, she was the grown woman helping chaperone at a high school prom.

She had stayed by Jordan’s side like some grieving spinster when his mind recoiled at the life he caught himself leading back in the city; it was never what he wanted.  She had so many ambitions for the future, while he just wanted to crawl into a time-capsule of the past and lead the life and have the career of a breed of man that was facing extinction; the truth was, his childhood heroes had already started a slow decline into obsolescence before he even took his first few breaths of air outside the womb.
No, this never was going to work between the two of them.

“Did I tell you how great you look like tonight, Kate?”

She startled, her face souring.  He added softly, under his breath, hoping no one was listening.  “I’ll be moved out by the end of the week.”

Jordan swallowed hard and in return for her delicateness, he simply walked away into the sea of hormone-filled adolescents without another word.  It wouldn’t be the first time someone who once thought him sensitive would terminate the relationship calling him a ‘cold, insensitive prick.”
Jordan couldn’t handle this, though.  Not here, not now – not in the halls where he cut his teeth and grew so proud.

He sighed a bit looking around, and for the first time staring at the younger faces he admitted to himself that this wasn’t just a phase, or an ill-thought out plan.  He was a teacher here now.  He was a teacher here because this was the one place he still felt strong in the world, this was the one place he had to remind him why life was exciting.  This was where he was strongest on the earth, and if that meant he would be teaching the next generation in order to take advantage of that strength, then a teacher he was.

The students didn’t need to know how personal this was… the faculty and administration definitely didn’t.

These were his halls.  He’d find meaning again here, maybe through teaching, or research, or writing.  He’d find it, and this time not let it go in the process.

Sure, he wasn’t a welcome face already with some of the faculty, and even the parents:  He was too young, he was inexperienced.  This wasn’t even on the radar of his career goals five years ago, after all.  He determined at that moment he wouldn’t budge from this place, though: even if that meant he’d truly become the mean old son-of-a-bitch defending it that his sudden ex-girlfriend now saw him as.

Okey dokey, so as is usual with me, we'll focus on the powers. However, I do have to say this:

Teacher / Student Relations isn't banned in this game (well, it's banned at the SCHOOL, but you know what I mean), BUT since Teacher / Student Relations are a sticky subject for a lot of people, just make sure you're either OK with Teacher / Student Stuff OR you're ok with not having much if any "Extracurricular Activities." If you're ok with either of those, then go ahead, we need a teacher, just be aware that he will be the only PC player currently in-game...so be sure that's the dynamic you want to introduce, ok? :-) I wouldn't want you getting bored and frustrated because everybody else is getting down and dirty and Jordan isn't! :P

So, onto the powers!

First thing's first, I like the Hard Limits. It's good that we don't have to sort them out, so thanks for doing some of the hard work for me :P

However, I do need to say that I think his Luck Powers A) Start off a little too weak, and B) his overall powers are a touch too...broad. I know it's difficult to read the powerscale of the game considering they haven't gotten their powers yet, but having Hex, Bless AND direct manipulation seems a little too big and broad to start off with. Honestly, I would prefer if you stuck to one to begin with and then the other ones opened up MUCH later, once he's mastered his abilities. EG, he starts off only being able to influence specific items or events, and then as his powers grow, he starts being able to manipulate the odds on several items or events, and then - as a Mastery Level Power - he can create a small luck field around somebody or something (either negative or positive) that lasts a certain amount of time. With the power scale of this game, that seems like a Mastery Level Ability rather than an ability he starts with that grows over time. Remember, this isn't DC or Marvel, so the Power Levels are significantly lower.

Further, can I ask whether those headaches you mentioned get worse as he influences the statistics further? Like, changing something from a 48 to 49% chance is trivial, but changing something from a 10 to 90% chance almost incapacitates him afterwards?

Further further, I just need to make sure you know to keep an eye on what is ACTUALLY a matter of odds and what isn't; in your powers, you mentioned Blackjack in passing, when Luck Manipulation - when the deck has already been shuffled - means literally nothing in cards. It isn't a luck game, it's a skill game. Once the cardsare shuffled, they are in a specific order and no amount of probability manipulation is going to turn the top card from an Ace into an 8, for example. :P

Also, just to make sure you're keeping to the 5%, is it ok if every time he uses his powers, you let me know and then I roll a 100-sided dice on the Elliquiy Dice Roller. If it comes up 1-5, that flaw activates? Just so we ACTUALLY get a random 5% rather than "It activates when Plot Says So," haha. :P

I have a few other niggles, but those are the big ones I want addressed before we can move on to the finer points. :-)

Hey there!  Thank you for the input.  While it's not the most artful it seems to address them more or less in bullet points so everything gets covered -- and clearly.

  • While I have no sexual plans for Jordan at the moment, I'm also not ruling them out.  I had already imagined, based on the teacher/student percentile, it would be a teacher/student thing if it happened, and am completely okay with that.  It would be some interesting drama to play out.  That isn't a focus for the character at this time, though, so I really can't say too much further on that.
  • Headaches (not ignoring your power request, but since it requires the most chatting I am saving it to the end.)  I'm reading that you say you would like headaches to be more severe when he is manipulating probabilities that are less likely.  1:5 is not as bad as a headache issue vs 1:30.  That was always my intention, and I thought I had made it clear in the character sheet as such.  Can you please advise me where/how you feel it would be best to state that so it wouldn't be hidden in other blocks of text, (since it obviously is.)
  • I do 'grok' your concept about blackjack and agree.  It was a poor example because I was trying to make a quick point and not thinking too much about the way it could be interpreted.  Since I love explicitly stating things for clarity:  I believe that prior to shuffling a standard deck, probability is a factor in determining cards (precisely we can say there is a roughly 1:52 chance of drawing any individual card in a 52 card deck.)  Probability is not in play mid-way through the game on a post-shuffled deck.  While I am not comfortable editing my already posted sheet without your explicit instructions to do so, on my private copy that I will use when posting it in the future, I have changed 'blackjack' to 'keno' to preserve clarity.
  • I'm very fine with letting you role that die; especially on main threads and plot-based scenes.  I would enjoy some lee-way in determining those things in scenes if it is both NON-PLOT and a NON-MAIN thread IF my tagging partners are consenting, but understand if you still want to be involved:  I would strongly prefer in those cases (if a thread is BOTH non-plot and non-main threaded) to at least simply be able mail you the resulting rolls using E's dice system myself so a scene does not get held up waiting for the roll.  (I would use E's dice system to send the mail, obviously, so you would not have to verify the results independently.)  Since I would like to incorporate failure into some scenes deliberately, I would also respectfully ask that you take my explicitly stated desire for a failure into account (if applicable,) when determining the result.

Finally, I have attempted to alter the powers below, in accordance with your statements.  Given the new structure I am also opting to adjust his flaw Photographic Evidence in order to make more sense with the new structure.

Power Revisions

In practice, this is largely simply intended to allow Jordan a general idea of how difficult a task he is up against when using his Against The Odds power to push against a non-likely probability.

Against the Odds - With a small amount of concentration, Jordan may influence a single, seemingly random outcome that is limited to the physical world.  For instance, a die may roll in his favor, a coin will flip to his desired side, or maybe a spinning bottle will just happen to point to that desired special someone.  With added concentration effort, Jordan is additionally able to influence an event that probability is acting against:  weighted coins can flip the wrong way, guns can jam, and a specific person can be chosen out of a crowd of a hundred.

Amateur

Requires: Neonate Level + Around one in-game month of regular practice,  or (another) unexpected event of power.

Against the Odds (Improvement) - Jordan's concentration ability has become truly admirable.

Practiced
Requires: Neonate Level + Six in-game months of regular practice, or (another) unexpected event of power.

Making My Own News - Jordan is no longer limited to isolated instances of probabilities.  He may now manipulate probabilities around people, places, or things to create minor fields of either fortune or misfortune that last around eight hours per use.  In order to do so, Jordan must first have a photograph featuring the face of the individual, the object, or featuring the location within his possession.  While he may attempt to focus the probability around a single theme, such as 'studying the right material for the exam' or  'poor accuracy', correct 'aiming' is highly unreliable at around a fifty percent success rate.  Deletion or destruction of the photograph instantly destroys the effects of the blessing or jinx.  During the duration of the field, the contents of the photograph slowly fades, whether online or a physical copy, and may no longer be used for future ability attempts.  Location-based probability fields my not exceed the size of an average classroom.

Seasoned
Requires: Neonate Level + A year of in game-time regular practice, or (another) unexpected event of power.

Making My Own News (Improvement) - Jordan is no longer limited to isolated instances of probabilities.  He may now manipulate probabilities around people, places, or things to create moderate fields of either fortune or misfortune that last around twenty-four hours per use.  In order to do so, Jordan must first have a photograph featuring the face of the individual, the item, or featuring the location within his possession.  While he may attempt to focus the probability around a single theme, such as 'physical trauma' or  "financial gain' the 'aim' is unreliable at around a seventy-five percent success rate.

(While I certainly do not expect the in-game calendar to push further than this, the possibility of future upgrades will be handled via conversation with the game-master if that ever becomes necessary.)

Character Flaws:

Photographic Evidence - For Making My Own News effects, Jordan requires a photo that shows the face or location of the target he wishes to affect.

Just making sure that you had taken it into account, since we had another player leave because he found that the restrictions of such a dynamic didn't agree with his playstyle, and I wanted to be sure to avoid that. :D

I'd say include it as a separate section of the "Flaw," and try to condense it to a basic description of why the headaches happen and what they entail. :-)

I believe that prior to shuffling a standard deck, probability is a factor in determining cards (precisely we can say there is a roughly 1:52 chance of drawing any individual card in a 52 card deck.)

I actually disagree...see, probability is an issue from your perspective, but pre-shuffling, the cards are still in a specific order so manipulating probability does nothing since it's the same issue as if you were dealing with a shuffled deck. I mean...from YOUR perspective, drawing an Ace of Spades is 1:52. in reality, the odds are either 1 or 0, since the card on top is either an Ace or it isn't, and no manipulation of Probability is going to change that. All shuffling does is change the order of the cards. You can make the argument that probability plays a factor in the actual shuffling itself, so he can increase the odds of a certain card catching on the edge of another card and winding up on top, but once the deck is down - whether it has been shuffled or not - the cards are always in that specific order and it no longer has anything to do with actual probability. Obviously from your perspective it does, but the ACTUAL probability independent of observers is always either 1 or 0.

Of course if you wanted it to fail, or you DEFINITELY wanted it to succeed, we'd take every situation on its own merits. :-) This would be more a general rule for when you don't mind either way :P And yes, I don't mind you rolling the dice as long as you send it to me so I can verify it. If you don't want to roll the dice and want a specific result, clear the result with me first :-) Hell, we could at a later date add more categories - like, 0-5 is a failure, 6-20 is a partial success, 21 - 50 is a success but it doesn't go the way your character intended etc etc, but that's a discussion for MUCH later, once they have their powers.

Flaw will be adjusted to below when next asked to repost:

Headaches - Jordan's superpowers are grounded in his mental abilities; as such use of them requires a degree of mental fortitude, and over-use of them results in mental exhaustion.  Due to his natural propensity towards migraines, this is the natural effect of this exhaustion.  The intensity and duration of the migraines are directly in proportional to both the DEGREE in which he pushes against probability (1:30 vs 1:3000) and the FREQUENCY in which he does so.  In other words, he would suffer a longer and more sustained migraine for pushing against a probability of 1:300 when compared to pushing against a probability of 1:3.  Furthermore, the frequency of use in these powers can likewise influence the duration and intensity of the headaches.  In other words, he will be more debilitated when pushing a probability of 1:30 four times in one scene, than if he does so only two times.  As Jordan progresses in ability, he will gradually be able to do progressively more without being debilitated; this is more fully detailed in his powers section.

I'm... obviously not being very clear typing today because I actually agree with everything you just said and had no intention of contradicting it in my previous message.  I think since I have a tendency to refer to things in the past tense online, it's coming across as different than I intend it when the key word is being 'shuffled' vs. 'to be shuffled' vs 'in the process of shuffling'.  Since I neither had, nor currently have, any arguments to the statement you just made, I am not too sure what more to say here.  Beyond that we're getting dangerously close to rehashing the infamous Monty Hall problem here, which I assure you I am familiar and agree with the tenants of.

If our inability to speak on the same terms, even though I feel we are actually in agreement, is creating some concern I can re-revise his powers and throw away the Against The Odds skill tree entirely.

For the record, I see myself as very... relaxed player who tends to act against power playing.  I'm a social/creative writing style player. If I ever sensed anything would be 'edgy' I would conference with you before attempting it.  If I ever did anything that you didn't like without realizing that I was, the string of mea-culpas you would get from me after I found would be truly astounding.

Okey dokey, since I'm happy with everything else, I'll just reply to the central paragraph about the nature of his abilities and the "Against All Odds" discussion. :-)

Yes, let's stay away from that little snaffu :P

Anywho...I don't mind you keeping the Against All Odds tree - one of my past characters in the previous iteration of this game had a similar ability - but if you want to change it, feel free. I mean, you can go with directly influencing events to a specific purpose, or you can have a character focused on Blesses and Hexes - maybe to Bless something he needs to Hex something nearby, since his powers work more on a transference of luck than an alteration of it, or maybe he has a "Reserve" of luck, and he can use that to either make himself or another person lucky, or make himself or another person unlucky in order to refill the reserve; there's plenty of fun ways you can go with that! - it's really up to you. Either way, I don't see anything immediate that requires my attention, so let me know if you'd like to stick with AAO's or switch to a Hex/Bless character, and we can go from there :-)

I am happy keeping it as-is if you are happy.  I just didn't want to not propose a lack of a way 'out' to you if my mis-fired communications about my understanding of probability were leaving you uncomfortable as a GM.

That being said, if you find my revised power proposal still too broad in scope, I would definitely go with the hex/blessing powers over Against The Odds.  I, admittedly, added the Against The Odds skill tree because I didn't want to overpower him at the beginning, and any standing blessing/hex seemed to have that possibility.  The Hex/Jinx thing was always more central to my concept during creation, but I'm also very flexible so was happy pushing it back in the revised power set.  Since you said I was underpowering his beginning powers, though, it may have been a moot point to begin with.  (As for your character in the previous game, you had mentioned that to me in PM, and I confess looking at his sheet when deciding how to write the powers.)

So:  In short:  If you likes his revised power-set -- no changes necessary.

If you don't: How about we simply put his revised Making My Own News [/i ] jinx/blessing power on a spectrum, and as he progresses in skill the potential power/duration of those powers get larger?

This is the thing; it's up to you. I don't have a preference either way, and this is kinda your Concept Pitch. It REALLY depends on what YOU would prefer; do you want to have Against All Odds being his primary "Power Tree?" Or do you want Jinxing and Hexing, considering that in the former, the Jinxing/Hexing will be SEVERELY limited due to it being a Secondary, Late Game power? If Jinxing and Blessing was more central to your character, I personally would go for that as opposed to the Against All Odds since it adds some more flexibility and some more interesting possible interactions, BUT the AAO also adds in some interesting stuff.

In short, I don't mind how the current powers are - maybe push back the Jinxing Blessing and add some heavier caveats to it since it IS a Secondary Ability - but if YOU want to have the central power be Jinxing/Blessing, then do it.

Personally, I think your last suggestion - a Spectrum of Making Your Own News - has more potential for fun depending on how we structure it and how you make it work, but if you want to play Against All Odds instead, be my guest.

Hey all, just poking my head in to see if I can join in. I've always loved the coming-into-superpowers storylines. I have two character concepts to choose from depending on how people like them. These are just bare-bones; I'll work on a full profile on whomever is better liked by the players and, more importantly, the GM.

    Kevin Barrows
Personality: He's a Power Metal enthusiast and nerd extraordinaire. Dungeons and Dragons, Live Action Roleplaying, Video games, and Sci-fi and fantasy books/television are his favorites. His second passion is music, and he has his faithful companion, the keytar dubbed AE-DE, with him at all times. With which he plays songs about vikings and epic magical medieval adventures. He aspires to be pretty much a modern day bard, and his new powers will help him achieve his goals.
Power: At the beginning levels, he's able to incite basic emotions (anger, fear, joy, sadness, lust, confusion) with his favorite instrument and, to a much lesser degree, his voice. As he gets more powerful, he can get into the more complex emotions, and affect animals too. Unfortunately, that favorite instrument relies on having a charged battery or some other sort of power source. His power also scales on what sort of amplification units he has access to. With just his instrument, he can incite emotions in those near him... assuming they don't all plug their ears. And he can't just play any song – its emotion has to match the one he wants to coax from others. I'll get more into its limitations and strengths if people like him better.
Kevin is much more developed as a character, since I've played him before.

    Jennifer Walters
Personality: Also quite nerdy, but tends to try to fly under the radar unlike the slightly more outgoing Kevin. She participates in a few different clubs – anything that involves reading or video games – so she's able to get involved when she thinks she needs to or had in inkling. Where all her other classes hover at mediocre 'C's' and 'B's' (more out of lack of care than lack of mind), she excels in chemistry (and, for some reason, English.) Some prestigious companies already have their eyes on her.
Power: Her skill in chemistry is only strengthened when she comes into power. Then science and magic combine to make something wonderful. But instead of needing a whole lab of equipment and reagents, she can do it on the fly out of stuff from nature. Out in the wilds, she can produce small bursts of fire, single-person sleep powders, and other mixtures that do minor things. Give her a lab and some time to work, however, and she can create devastating potions that don't exactly follow natural laws. Health potions? No problem. Potions to substitute a whole night's rest? Give her a couple days, and she can figure it out. Invisibility potions? Eh, why not? Explosions for days? Fuck yeah! All she needs to do is experiment. So, naturally, at the beginning she only knows how to come up with a couple of things. As she goes on, though, she'll gather more and more recipes with stronger and more creative effects. Basically, she'll be able to do what an alchemist can do in games like WoW and Elder Scrolls.

Kevin is far more developed than Jennifer, because I've played him before (and love his character) but I notice you're running thin on female characters. I would LOVE to play them both, but I understand that we're only allowed one for now.

Understood.   Apologies: I was not trying to make you make my decision: I just didn't feel I had enough information (your opinion of his revised power set, ) to make my decision.

I will take option two and spectrum out his hex/blessing system in that case and post out here unless I hear from otherwise.
