I think it is pretty clear how we ended up here.

Step 1) Disenfranchise as many Bernie supporters as you can. Including rigging the primary, lying about it, trotting out the main perpetrator as your campaign buddy (DWS), insult them and call them names (Bernie Bros, misogynists for not supporting a woman, etc)
Step 2) Disenfranchise as many independents/undecideds as possible. Includes calling them names, deleting them on Facebook, belittling their "protest votes" or insulting them when they bring up anything negative about Hillary when they talk about their concerns voting for her when they're still undecided.
Step 3) Pay attention to all the popular polls, in which every single oversampled Democrats to tell an inaccurate narrative. I assume this was to make them sure they could win and ensure a big turnout, but instead it made people complacent, making them stay at home while their opponents saw the polls and surged to try to rectify it. Oops.
Step 4) Lose.

It is disappointing, but the extreme left brought this on themselves. This election had people on the left insulting people in the center (and right) at every turn. They are the ones who created all these Trump supporters and now they're going to have to live with it.

Please don't do that. Instead look for local organizations you can support. Resist what might be coming from the ground up. Whatever may happen to the nation, there are still things you can do to make certain at least your neighbourhood doesn't go down the drain.

I hate to use the word ignorance as it is a laden term, but I feel that a lot of people, in the US and everywhere else (Look at brexit) are being ignorant about reality, and listen only to the echo chamber of biased media and worse "social media" where facts are disregarded.

Not stupid so much as gullible. As ReijiTabbito has pointed out, there's a large groundswell of people who are genuinely concerned and seeing their entire life basically crumble - Trump's slick showmanship seduced them into thinking he was their 'champion'. Those farmers and factory workers are the silent majority of Trump voters, while the racists and assholes make all the noise.

And Hillary basically hit all the possible buttons she could to alienate moderates.

In some ways it shouldn't be that surprising, right wing populist politics has been on the rise across the west for the last decade. Brexit, the National Front in France, the 5 star party in Italy the list goes on and on.
Globalization, the rise of the BRIC nations, a decade of war in the Middle East and the rise Islamic extremism; they all play into the right wing, nationalist narrative.

Technically, it's the extreme left that was scorned here with the sidelining of Sanders and his coalition, almost foiling the way the Republicans tried but failed to resist the far right that rode the immigration issue with Trump. Clinton and the business classes of both Democratic and Republican parties were the center, and over the past two or three decades the centrist Democrats have done nothing but try and compromise with the Republicans who never really reciprocated and instead drifted further right.

It might be interesting if in the next couple of years, just as we saw with the Tea Party, we might see the far left that the Clinton campaign decried as the 'Red Army' make a return.
