In agreement with most that has been said about the 'superior' nature of the writing, when there is time to hone it.  Also in at least one of my ongoing stories, my writing partner and I are writing about an entire world, and therefore checking writing to ensure you maintain continuity and yet move the story forward needs the ability to take time.  Something that for all the benefits of instant gratification of other methods, they do not possess.

If you are 'banging out' one line or very short passages for a one time story IM or similar are fine, but for an ongoing and in depth story Forum is the best method.
