[Star Wars] X-Wing: Shattered Empire
« on: November 16, 2008, 08:03:17 AM »
I'm interested in running a star wars game set three days after the battle of Endor.  Here's the basic plot outline:

The Emperor has been dead for three days, and mass uprisings against the new order have already begun.  At Endor, however, the casualties of battle still languish.  The alliance medical frigate, Redemption was destroyed during the battle in a cowardly flank attack, leaving rebel forces without the ability to provide significant medical care for the injured.  To save the heroes who bled for the republic, alliance command has hatched a desperate plan to send the Mon Calamari star cruiser Independence to Cloud City in the Bespin system, only recently liberated from Imperial control.

It won't be easy.  Disorganized remnants of the imperial fleet hunger for the blood of rebels, and many of them have the necessary gravity well projectors to pull the Independence out of hyperspace and sate that hunger.  The squadrons that took nearly 40% casualties in the Battle of Endor now face an even more grueling fight.  And perhaps, they'll even get to learn just who is in charge of the Empire, after the death of the sith...

Some General character guidelines:

Good character concepts include pilots in the squadrons aboard the Independence, Crew members of the Independence, Casualties of battle onboard the ship for medical evacuation (which can include anyone from people awaiting cybernetic transplants to individuals with exotic venereal diseases.), and general purpose entertainers and hangers on to the Alliance Navy.  (The Independence served as the center of Alliance operations during the Galactic Civil War prior to the Battle of Endor, and was effectively its political capitol.)

The Squadrons aboard the Independence:

Regular Squadrons:

Blue Squadron (Commander: Ten Numb) (10 B-Wings, 8 A-Wings)
Gold Squadron (Commander: Lando Calrissian) (14 Y-Wings, 6 X-Wings, 1 SoroSuub Personal Luxury Yacht 3000)
Red Squadron  (Commander: Wedge Antillies) (19 X-Wings, 4 A-Wings)

Squadrons taken from the Liberty: (A Star Cruiser destroyed by the Death Star superlaser)

Green Squadron (Commander: Jake Farrell) (7 A-Wings, 6 Y-Wings, 4 B-Wings)
Bandit Squadron (Commander: Ace Azzarian) (14 Z-95 Headhunters)

I'm interested in using a heavily modified version of the Spirit of the Century rules as a system for the game.  The system should be fairly unobtrusive and simple, and if you're not interested, you can create your character freeform and allow me to adjudicate anything needed for the system.  I'll try to make the system as unintimidating as possible though.

Character Creation:

Step 1: Aspects

The first and most important step to creating your character is to pick aspects.  Aspects are a collection of words or phrases that describe your character.  Things like "Crack Shot"  "Force Sensitive" "Delicate Hands" and "It's a trap!"  Aspects can also be negative things, like "Drunkard" "Brashly Overconfident" "Sadistic Bastard"  and "It's not my fault!"  Positive aspects enable you to use force points to gain bonuses on actions related to them.  Negative aspects, meanwhile, enable you to gain force points when they hinder you or provide roleplaying opportunities.  Therefore, a balance of positive and negative aspects is advisable

Your character has 8 aspects, but you can leave up to 4 of them undefined and define them during play.

Step 2: Skills

The next step, now that you know who your character is, is to decide what he or she is good at.  Your character has the following starting allotment of skills:  (the number by each skill indicates the base value of a check using that skill, and also how you can describe a check resulting in that number.  When you do something where there is an element of chance, you roll dice and, depending on the result, end up subtracting or adding up to three from or to the result)

1 skill at Great      (4)
2 skills at Good     (3)
3 skills at Fair       (2)
4 skills at average (1)

Skills:  (combat skills in bold)

Alertness
Art
Athletics
Blasters (used for all ranged weapons below turbolaser scale)
Contacts
Deceit
Empathy
Endurance (Provides +2 health at good, +1 health at average)
Fists
Gambling
Intimidation
Leadership
Medicine
Melee Weapons
Might
Pilot
Rapport
Repair
Resolve (Provides +2 composure at good, +1 composure at average)
Resources (how much money you have access to)
Starship Ops (used to operate capitol ships)
Sleight of Hand
Slicing (screwing with computers)
Stealth
Subterfuge

Step 3: Composure and Health

Composure reflects your ability to handle emotional and social setbacks, while health reflects your ability to survive in combat.  By default, you get five health boxes and five composure boxes, like so:

1  2  3  4  5
[ ][ ][ ][ ][ ]

If your endurance or resolve is average or better, you get 6 health or composure boxes.

1  2  3  4  5  6
[ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ]

If your endurance or resolve is good or better, you get 7 health or composure boxes.

1  2  3  4  5  6  7
[ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ]

In combat, a character rolls a combat skill (such as blasters) against an applicable skill rolled by the defender (such as pilot).  It the attacker gets a higher result, the difference is applied to the defender as stress.  The defender must place an X in a health box with a number equal or higher to the amount of stress he has taken.  If this health box is already filled, he or she must fill in the next highest health box.

If a defender cannot fill in a health box, or does not wish to, he can instead take a Consequence.  A consequence is a bad situation, like an injury, a state of depression, or a loss of reactor containment.  A character can suffer three consequences before being taken out.  The first consequence is a minor consequence.  The second consequence is a moderate consequence.  The third consequence is a major consequence.  If a character is suffering a major consequence and takes another consequence, the attacker may determine what happens to him or her.  The only way to avoid this is to spend all force points to narrate the fate of your character.  (with GM approval)

Step 4: Perks

Your character gets three perks, special bonuses that help make him or her more interesting.  You may leave your perks undefined and define them during play, if you wish

Perks:

Bloody Mess: Whenever enemies are defeated by this character, they are defeated in a spectacular manner, falling off railings, falling on the self destruct switch, etc.

Companion: Gain an NPC with 4 stress boxes, 2 skills at good, 3 skills at fair, and 3 skill at average.  Can act independently as well as attaching like an ally can.  Good for representing astromech droids, wingmen, and background lovers.

Endor Holocaust: Whenever a vehicle or object is destroyed by this character it explodes spectacularly, possibly causing collateral damage

Fastest thing in Space: May spend a force point to win initiative.

Gadget: Your character has just the right tool(s) for the job.   This gadget counts as an aspect which may be changed at will  by spending a force point.  (Examples: C-3PO, the Millennium Falcon)

Introspective: May remove a wound from the composure track once per scene by spending a force point.

Master of Disguise: May spend a force point to leave play, then re enter play  by revealing that an NPC was the character in disguise.

Personal Starship: You have your own personal starship and may add 3 aspects to it.

Persistent: May remove a wound from the health track once per scene by spending a fate point.

Allies: Gain 3 NPCs with 4 stress boxes, 1 skill at good, 1 skill at fair, and 1 skill at average. Allies can "attach" to a character to provide a +1 bonus to any skill they are trained in and take stress for the attached character. Allies cannot act independently without spending a fate point.  The allies perk is good for representing squadron mates, fellow foot soldiers, flunkies, and general purpose redshirts.

Skill Flexibility:  You may substitute one skill for another.  (only applies to one pair of skills, both skills chosen at the time this perk is taken, e.g. piloting <-> blasters)

Tough: Can take an extra moderate consequence.  (May apply either to the health track or the composure track)

Veteran: May use a skill to add to add aspects; (usually bad ones) can add 1 additional aspect for every two points achieved on the roll beyond the first.  (applies to one skill)

Step 5: Force Points

Your character receives 8 force points to start the game with.

A force point may be spent to power certain perks, or to use the effect of an aspect to gain a +2 bonus on a roll.  You may use any number of force points on a roll as long as you still have applicable aspects.  The aspects of other people can apply as well, so if you have the aspect "crack shot" and your opponent has the aspect "slow and overweight" you can spend 2 force points to get a +4 bonus on the roll.  An aspect can only be used in this way once per scene.

Background:  Leonia Tavira was born into poverty on the planet Etti IV.  She was a very intelligent youth, who hated the struggle to survive.  Through sheer cunning and force of will, she became the Mistress of the regional governor, Grand Moff Thairl Tavira.  Less than a year later, the Grand Moff's wife died under mysterious circumstances, and he married Leonia.  A few days before the battle of Endor, poor Thairl suffered a stroke and put a blaster bolt into his brain rather than live as a paraplegic.  Or at least that's how Leonia tells the story.

She took it upon herself to continue the career of "Grand Moff Tavira," taking her husband's code cylinders and signing documents in his name, actually doing a fairly reasonable job of managing the sector.  After the death of the Emperor, she revealed her identity, counting on the chaos of the political environment to keep her in power.  Two days after the battle, she came into contact with her local military commander, a man named High Admiral Teradoc, who had been plotting to become a warlord even before the Battle of Endor.

Terradoc allowed Tavira to take command of his flagship, the Invidious, while he assumed command of one of his two Victory class Star Destroyers.  Hearing word of an independent mission of mercy by the Independence, Tavira seized upon the opportunity to prove herself worthy to the new order, by destroying one of the flagships of the rebellion.  Terradoc approved of the the plan, and committed his Interdictor vessel to the hunt for the Independence.  Tavira has no idea what she's doing, and precious little understanding of the dynamics of commanding a space fleet But she believes wholeheartedly that if she just yells a lot and gives them men a little flash of skin every now and then, she's sure to win.  ...Somehow.

Background: Zeta had a fairly innocuous start as a Human Replica Droid. Sold to an unhealthily ambitious Imperial Moff, she spent several years performing secretarial duties for his office, and primarily, him personally. Like most HRDs, she was capable of far greater physical and mental feats than her programming limitations allowed. Fortunately for her, she was one of the targets of IG-88's Droid Revolution. However, her station as an Imperial Moff's secretary allowed her the very best in counter-intrusion software, and was able to contain the virus before it devoured her entire infrastructure. Over time, she was able to modify the virus to perform software reconstruction under her direction.
The Moff, meanwhile, had gotten greedy and wanted certain individuals taken care of, but lacked the capital and/or courage to hire a mercenary or assassin to take care of his problem. Instead, he decided to modify Zeta to do his bidding. But, before he was able to enact his plan, Zeta activated her specialized software and reconstructed herself to be fully activated and free of restrictions. Zeta's custom virus was not as innocuous as she would have preferred, however - it damaged her ethical centers, heavily scrambled her social algorithms, and she discovered a new taste for killing humans. Her first act as a free intelligence was to remove the Moff's head from his shoulders.
The act was so silent and Zeta so effective at resuming her demeanor that she was several lightyears away before anyone had figured out what happened, and by then it was too late. No one liked that Moff anyway, and he was replaced without incident. Zeta, wishing to continue her killing and exact revenge on the Empire but to not be wandering on her own as a wanted criminal, joined the Rebellion and was placed into the ranks of Gold Squadron just in time for the assault on Death Star II.

Looks fairly decent, but your character's name doesn't look very "Star Wars"

How about switching up the syllables to make him Ediman Therson?  (and dropping the Almus part completely, since Star Wars characters rarely have three names)

As for your starship concept, it doesn't really work, since the Rebel Alliance doesn't utilize any medical transport/bomber vessels.  (I think you'll agree that the entire concept is a bit silly.)  It might make sense for your character to command a Nebulon B escort Frigate, although you would need to have decent Starship Ops and Leadership skills for that.

With your character's stats, it might make more sense for him to fly a 2 seat B-Wing/e with Blue squadron or a 2 seat Y-Wing with Gold Squadron.  (And Zeta)  I would suggest giving your Pilot ally the blasters skill instead of the repair skill and making him either a Blue squadron A-Wing pilot or a Gold squadron Y-Wing pilot.  Also, your wingman (who is better described as a gunner) has 5 health stress boxes, not 6.

As a starfighter pilot, your character would likely be a 1st Lieutenant, while as a Nebulon B Frigate commander, your character would likely be a Commander.  I'm not too sure about the Frigate idea though, since part of the theme of the game is that the Independence is flying alone.  (also, the destruction of the alliance hospital ship is the main reason for the plot in the first place.)

Hrrrrrrrrmmm.... I'm in too. :D  I'm not very familiar with the system.  In fact, I'm not familiar with it at all. At any rate, my character is going to be something of a commando... possibly some kind of special-forces esque pilot assigned to support Independence on sabotage/reconnaissance missions... at any rate, that role can be refined as the game goes on.

Biography

Alanna Danaron was born to a single mother and raised on the streets of Coruscant.  When her mother died, Alanna was only six years old, and once she was put out on the streets, she learned to take care of herself very quickly.  Once she was old enough, she began to take jobs, working at local cantinas and running errands for various businesses, legal or otherwise.  As she grew up, she began to be noticed by the Rebel resistance, especially once it became clear that she was one hell of a fighter.  At 14, she could beat boys twice her size to a pulp, leaving them whimpering and bloodied in the gutter, more through outmaneuvering them and using their strength against them rather than overpowering them.  However, in spite of all the hardship, Alanna remained a kind, thoughtful girl at heart, often giving what little food she could afford or steal to other orphaned children living in the dregs of Coruscant society.

Once it became apparent to the Rebels working in the area that she was no friend of the Imperials, they approached her, offering her a home and a job, working for them as a runner and a spy.  The rest, as they say, is history.  At the age of 18, she was smuggled off Coruscant and sent to train as a Commando for the Rebel Alliance.  During boot camp, she developed quite a talent for blaster work as well as for being able to hide herself and be less-than-obvious when the need arose.  After graduation, she was assigned to the Independence, and had been serving on the vessel ever since.

Personal Side-note (If someone wants to make this character, feel free, otherwise she can be an NPC): Her friend Tana Ellian is a pilot with Red Squadron and was one of the survivors of the Battle of Endor, now assigned to support the Independence.

At 24 years of age, Alanna is only now reaching the prime in her life.  Her features are soft, feminine, with deep brown eyes and often bearing a slight smile, though it will be quite obvious to any who take the time to meet and get to know her, that she is no push-over.  Her brown hair hangs to just below her shoulders, wavy and with slight curls.  Her body is decidedly feminine as well, with full, rounded hips and a tightened physique honed from years of physical training and more than a few hectic missions.  Her bust is well-formed, though not overly-so.  It is enough to tempt most male (and female, if they are of that preference) crew members of the Independence, but is not so large as to be a burden for her in combat or other activities.

//By the way, what "genre" is this game going to go under?

That sounds pretty good.  Sounds like you'd be Red 29 or some such.  (Rebel alliance fighter squadrons typically consisted of 12 fighters, but they were increased to 36 craft for the battle of Endor and haven't been reorganized yet.)

A likely enough skill arrangement for you is:

Great: Blasters

Good:  Piloting, Resolve

Fair: Empathy, Alertness, Rapport

Average: Endurance, Fists, Gambling, Repair

Good Perks for you to consider include:

Companion: Astromech Droid  (Good: Repair, Slicing  Fair: Starship ops, Gambling, Stealth  Average: Piloting, Blasters, Endurance  5 Health, 4 Composure)

Endor Holocaust

Fastest Thing in Space

Personal Starship  (With aspects like minty factory fresh, latest upgrade package, and fuzzy dice)

Skill Flexibility (Alertness to Athletics to dodge blaster bolts)

I modified my character a tad.  I don't think she'll be affiliated with a particular squadron... since she's meant to be a support commando, she'd be independent of a particular unit.  I'm also going to add the health bars and stuff... maybe refine perks a bit, but her skills are pretty much set.

Edit: Final version of Alanna is now done.

Aviationrox: Your character was most likely one of the commandos used for the ground assault on the shield generator complex on the sanctuary moon Endor.  Your character background mentions that you're stealthy, but you don't have stealth among your skills, might want to revise that.

As for squadron, your character was most likely roped into Red Squadron to replace casualties incurred in the battle of Endor.  (The casualty rate for Rebel pilots during the battle was 35%)  You can probobly get away with painting your X-Wing black by claiming it's for stealth though.  However, you can't have an X-Wing modified to be better at everything.  You can either have a slower fighter with more shields or a faster fighter with less armor and defense.  A good set of aspects for your fighter might be "Increased Firepower" "Intimidating Paint Job" and "Enhanced Power Plant"  (pick one of the extra cannons or the increased torpedo capacity)

Your rank, if you're qualified to pilot a starship, would be flight liutenant.  However, you're special forces, so you'd use enlisted ranks.  You were probobly a private 1st class with a high pay grade during the assault, but the destruction of the death star almost certainly earned you a promotion to corporal.  (which mostly means a slight increase in pay and a whole lot more paperwork)

Ryven: There were a few civilians at the battle of Endor, so it's possible you could play a free trader or a smuggler who participated in the battle of his own free will.  (the alliance was just barely weak enough to have to accept any help they could get)  You might also be a trader who made medals for both sides, then went and sold them to the winners after the battle ended.

Also, could you consider changing your avatar?  It makes me smell jock strap.

Tweaked my character sheet a bit.  Also... where's Rogue Squadron in all this?  Are they going to be part of the mission, or no?

Weren't they distributed a bit during Endor? Or just part of Red? Luke hadn't officially left yet, and Wedge was leading Red.

Rogue Squadron was absorbed into Red Squadron during the battle of Endor, although elements from it were distributed to Blue and Gold squadrons so that all of the fighter squadrons in the battle would have sufficient combat experience.  All of the most elite starfighter pilots have been placed onboard the Independence, however, to help the Star Cruiser get to Bespin safely.

The game will be in Bondage/Exotic, I believe.  Rape isn't terribly in genre for Star Wars.  (The Empire isn't really organized enough to try it anyway.)

Hmmm...well, I don't know what a Nebulon B escort frigate is, and the whole bomber/medical transport thing only means that his ship is highly utilitarian.  He's got a few zany bombs in the cargo hatch, some heavy turrets, but the place is mostly an armored mobile garage, for repairing allied ships and rescuing stranded soldiers.

It's not a huge ship, probably larger than a typical fighter ship, with towing capacity, extra cargo space, and room to carry passengers.

I'm imagining him as a field engineer, that type of ship would be important to get down into hot spots and make necessary repairs and spontaneous engineering jobs.  The aspect 'Medevac' was only meant to imply that it could get in, make pick ups, and get out with relative easy, thanks to it's durability.

I agree about the Bondage category. Rape might work if it was a story about a mercenary hanging around Nar Shaddaa, but it's not.

I suppose he could have a modified KR-TB "Doomtreader" Freighter

Basically, it's the Hummer of Tramp light freighters.  With your character's skills, you could equip it to perform the neccesary duties you outline.  Then you could attatch yourself to a squadron in a support role.  (Unless you want to be post battle clean up.)  I do prefer that you change your aspect from "medevac" to "cargolifter" though.

Biography

Born a spacer, raised a spacer, made a living...as a test pilot for Incom.

Katta Succor, born third son of a relatively wealthy merchant in Hutt Space, has been around starships for most of his life.  Technically, his native atmosphere would be 'vaccuum', since he's been in space and on ships more than he's been on a planet.  Since his family was not human, they had very little chance of making good ground under the Empire, so when he was an infant, his family moved from their comfortable apartments on Coruscant to the Mourning Glory, a modified Action VI Corellian Transport, and began moving shipments for Hutts.  Criminals, scum, and pirates to be sure, but they actually paid non-humans.

Moving from a kid running around a freighter and spaceports up the ladder to a teenager fixing freighters and not being allowed to go to the spaceport until his repairs were done, he held out all hope for his 20th birthday present, his own snubfighter.  Sure, it had been a Z-95 Headhunter, but it was HIS.  Until he flew it for a joyride through the debris above Nar Shaddaa and nearly turned int oan expanding cloud of atoms, but he did get back to his home freighter relatively safely.

When it was time for he and his brothers to take professions, His eldest brother chose to go into economics research, his middle brother continued the family business, and he didn't know what he wanted to do, but fly.  So, he went to Incom, took their aptitude tests, and shot down their test pilots in simulators.  Repeatedly.  And got the job.

Over the next two years he flew anything he could get his hands on, from X-Wings, to Y-Wings, a TIE one time (and he almost lost his job because of it), and some odd little snubfighters that never made it to production, since he and his fellow testers couldn't get the thing to work at all.

However, following the destruction of Alderaan, and in honor of an Alderaanian friend who had died in a testing accident, Kata chose to join the Alliance to Restore the Republic, exchanging his earning for a then-brand-new X-Wing, which he has steadily modified and tweaked over the past five years.  Nothing huge, but he has Worked Out the Kinks.  Having been around his fair share of ships, he's kind of easy to see as the 'old hand', but unlike some stars, such as Wedge, Tycho, Luke, and Lando, he just kind of fades into the background, happy to listen to briefings, glad to take part in the Rebellion, but not so great with people.

Physcially, Kata is slightly taller and thinner than the average human male, has no nose, large red eyes, and his skin is sky blue, very pale for Duros, and bald.  Although thin, he is in good physical shape, and regularly visits the gym when not in a simulator.  More often than not, however, his spare time is spent in the simluators or the fighter bays, where he feels most 'at home'.

Looks good Katta.  :)

Yep, of course it could.  :)

I'd imagine that your character modified the side engines to swivel to enable the ship to hover better and incinerate planetary targets.  (I'll be using an adaptation of the scale rules from WEG Star Wars.)

Scale Rules are as follows:

the scales are:

Personal
Vehicle
Fighter
Freighter
Capital Ship
Dreadnaught
Planetary

Whenever something of a greater scale attacks something of a lesser scale, it gets a +2 bonus for each level of size difference.  Meanwhile, the smaller thing gets a +2 bonus on evasion based defenses.  Therefore, attacking something much bigger than you is a bit stupid.  (Fighters can still make strafing runs on capital ships, of course, and the point defense weapons are often less scary than the main armament)

On contests of speed and maneuverability, the scales are reversed.  Smaller things get +2 to maneuver for each point of size difference, while larger things get a +2 bonus for having more power.  (Although vehicles often receive a large bonus, so humans can't outrun vehicles and starfighters easily, although a personal scale vehicle like a STAP would be quite maneuverable.)

Starship Rules:

Starships have a speed rating and a stress cap.  Stress taken in space combat is applied both to the pilot and starship.  Consequences can be taken both for damage to the character and to the starship.  On vehicles, fighters, and freighters this stress is inflicted on the pilot.  On larger ships, the stress is inflicted on all named crewmembers.  (although more likely to redshirts being killed by exploding bridge computers.)

In space combat, it can be valuable to set up an attack by dogfighting.  To do so, a character rolls piloting with a bonus for ship speed and scale against the target's piloting with bonuses for speed and scale.  The margin of success can be added to an attack or defense on subsequent rounds.
