An FTP program I can trust
« on: September 12, 2015, 09:12:32 AM »
These are getting harder to find. I had Filezilla but the copy I was using got picked up as a potential virus/associated with malware by Avira. What I'm looking for is an FTP program that's trustworthy, isn't bundled with malware, and is available from a reputable source that won't try and infect my PC in any way.

Also, can anyone recommend a good zip program that's also free of malware? Winzip doesn't look above board the way it used to be, at least from the source I last got it from.

Thank you. :)

Can't help with the FTP one, but I use 7Zip downloaded from FileHippo.  Like you, I've found programs from many sources to be infected or packaged with crapware.  FileHippo seems pretty good though.  I still run Avast, SuperAntiSpy and Malwarebytes on everything, just in case...

Thanks Cycle, I'll check it out. :) My antivirus software I was using before (Norton) expired, so I used Panda and Ad-aware (which was when I first noticed problems with my computer), and now I have Avira on here. I have an install file for Malwarebytes but haven't installed it yet. Whatever happened to my computer before, it's locked me out from using Windows Defender.

For the FTP, I'd suggest using FireFTP if you use Firefox, or CoreFTP LE.

I upload pictures for a website to a couple of different hosting sites, plus I have my own.  I used CoreFTP up until I switched back to Firefox a few months ago.

It's a simple program, doesn't have malware, and is pretty easy to use.    Though, depending on where you download it from, you should check to see if that site bundles it with 'helpful' toolbars and make sure you do the advanced install and make sure you read whether the checkbox means 'NO I want the junk' or 'NO I DON'T want the junk'.

Thanks GypsyRose. I'll check it out. I use Firefox mainly. Does it work in conjunction with the browser?

Yes, Fire FTP integrates into your browser and works off a browser window.  Otherwise, the setup and operation is pretty much just like CoreFTP.

Okay. I'll give it a try and not install anything it's bundled with.

I use 7Zip and WinSCP, personally.

Okay. I haven't heard of WinSCP before.

WinSCP is a more norton commander style interface. You'd use it if you are planning on doing a lot with an scp/(s)ftp site.

Thanks! I got WinSCP and it works fine and does exactly what I need it to do.
