Hand to Hand: {Str/Dex}. Attack: Up-Close. Weak or void against certain armour. Defence: Hand to hand attacks.

If I'm reading this right that implies that Hand to Hand can not defend against other up close attacks, is this correct?

If so, I'd like to make a case that that not be true.

I could see you using hand to hand skills to mitigate damage taken while fighting someone, but the reality is that if someone comes at you with a knife and you're fighting bare handed you're going to get cut up.
The whole 'catch a sword between your hands' thing is kinda kung fu movie fantasy. (mythbusters even did an episode on it)

and pretty much anything else would probably be covered by Dodge instead.

Name: Arune Widdershins
Gender: Male
Age: 25
District: 2
Sexual Orientation: Pansexual
On & Offs: O/O & Other Stuff
Appearance: Black hair, dark blue eyes, pale skin
Personality: Detached/Cannibalistic/Pessimistic
History
The Widdershins' have put in applicants since the beginning and have honorable spots for those who make it into the tournament. They also have several winners of the Hunger Games in their family line who are allowed to produce and train children to pass on success in the genes. Arune was raised in a large family who trained from an early age to manipulate, kill, and devour each other over the course of time, so that the strongest may put in their names for volunteering in the Hunger Games. Among his nine brothers and sisters, only three lived past childhood. Arune the oldest of the three, was forced to put his name one last time into the tournament when his mother found him having plans to make off with a male lover. When his name was drawn, Arune cut ties with everyone except his family name that follows him like a dark mark. Unable to escape his fate, and knowing he might not live, Arune approaches this game ruthlessly with hatred for his fellow people.

What if you had something to parry with, even if it was only a foot length of a thick stick, it would make hand to hand a viable skill for blocking and parrying, wouldnt it?

Not even that. I have a friend who is professionally trained to knife fight (which is what's happening for a Career) and one of the main defense styles he was taught involves having no weapon at all and working around your opponent's weapon, even taking it from them. The same is true of guns if you're close enough. So no, I'm not talking about the bs catching a sword in your hand, I'm talking about doing things like flipping a kick up faster than your opponent and kicking their blow to one side or the other so that it doesn't hit.

What if you had something to parry with, even if it was only a foot length of a thick stick, it would make hand to hand a viable skill for blocking and parrying, wouldnt it?

See to me trying to kick their weapon away seems more like an attack action than 'Defense' I could totally see hand to hand being used to disarm an opponent; and would almost expect that to be one of its benefits, but; to use your example, if a professional knife fighter is being attacked with a knife, it's their skill with a knife that is allowing them to defend themselves from it. If you attack a professional boxer with a knife however.

What if you had something to parry with, even if it was only a foot length of a thick stick, it would make hand to hand a viable skill for blocking and parrying, wouldnt it?

I would like to see some kind of statement of what kind of roll 'using generic items' is; but that's more for like, if I wanna bludgeon a guy with a rock, or stab someone with a 3ft sharpened stick (or if I want to sharpen a 3ft stick, it's not exactly a 'complex item' nor does it require any knots) I would guess that if you have something to parry with you just get a bonus to Dodge with Dodge being the "parry" skill regardless of what you're using to do it.

EDIT: Or bludgeon someone with a rock tied to a 3ft unsharpened stick. Or just a regular stick.

I'm sure Lurks will make a decision on it.

I think youre thinking too much into it.

The game is based on pathfinder, which has a system for handling unarmed combat, though Lurks has heavily modified things so that system may not be in use.

@Wander: Jimmy is totally going to be the guy to start a roaring wildfire, and then be the only one to not get out out of its way fast enough.
Also, I'm pretty sure you can't have more Make Complex Item than you have Knot Tying. You have the former at 3 with the later at 1.

Heh, yeah... I see that happening, I know his player at least suffer's from Sod's Law... ^^'

Really? Where does it say that? If so, I'll just average them both to 2 or something, but I figured it was 1-5 on all skills. I'll go reread the OP.

EDIT = You are correct, I'll go and edit my sheet. :)
EDIT EDIT = All done! ^^ Both are rated at 2 now, so they're the only skills changed, moving 1 from Complex Items to Knots Tying.

And that's Ciar's sheet done too~

Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide
Name: Ciar Locker
Gender: Male
Age: 20
District: 1
Sexual Orientation: Pansexual
On & Offs: http://elliquiy.com/forums/index.php?topic=138550.0
Appearance: Ciar is an attractive and physically fit young adult. It is obvious that he has never wanted for food, shelter or water, but also that he has been kept active his whole life. He is not as muscular as some of the other career tributes have been, but has a lithe figure that gives away his training for the arena. He has dark hair and eyes, and is of fairly average height.
Personality: Ciar is charming and respectful at first meeting, even towards members of non-career districts, despite the pervading air of superiority that he was brought up with. His debonair attitude, however, hides the underlying psychoses so common in career tributes. He wants to see blood, and he wants to win the games. He enjoys sparring for its own sake, but he is itching to get into the arena so that he can finally see death brought by his own hands. While he puts an outward appearance of a perfect capitol lapdog, he cares very little for politics or the capitol.
History: Ciar’s upbringing is to be expected from a career tribute. He was trained from a young age in combat, and took to it like a duck to water. At the same time he learned to keep up airs of being polite, friendly and respectful, especially towards the capitol. He, like most careers, volunteered to enter the arena.

1, 2 and 4.
So yeah, he's got a boyish appeal to him.
Although in terms of pure looks Ciar's taking top rank in my book.
Arune's got the dark and buff and good body but probably has a septic tank for a personality kind of look to him. (No offense Rotburn)
Jimmy's got the 'guy you could be friends with, or have hot sticky sex with and then be awkward around' look to him. Kinda boy-next door. (Although I hate his hair.)

If you are talking about your male District 4 character, yes, traditionally Districts 1, 2, and 4 are the physically demonstrative and better martially skilled Tributes that may have had extra training. It is assumed that the Academy accepts very few students from outside of District 2, but since it is supposed to be a secret 'school', who knows what their requirements are to be sufficiently bribed into accepting others for 'higher education'? District 4 may be publicly known for fishing and seafood, but just imagine the pearls, shells, coral, and other delights they might trade across territorial lines.

Of course, there are always exceptions between stereotypes - no one HAS to portray the traditional Career. I don't imagine there have been many volunteers from District 4. For example, Jimmy's already below average height and pale versus tanned by the sun. Maybe his life has been spent somewhere other than the surface of the water - a longhouse in the village where they cultivate pearls or process the meats and plants they harvest. *shrugs* Whatever does go on in District 4 that the rest of Panem doesn't know about?

(D12 - Why you hatin' on Jimmy's hair?)

(Not a big fan of the 'styled to look fly away' style. Compare and contrast with this chicken)

And on that note:

Name: Anathema Device
Gender: Female
Age: 19
District: 3
Sexual Orientation: bi-curious
On & Offs: Link
Anathema has an academic impression of sex and sexuality. She has no real taboos, taking the scholastic view that she cannot claim not to like something without having first experienced it. That said she has experienced pain and has thus concluded that she is not a masochist. Anathema's analytic mind inclines her to the recognition that things may be sexual, but tends not to experience things as sexual herself. IE: nudity is often associated with sexuality but not automatically erogenous.

Anathema sees no reason why she wouldn't be attracted to girls, but hasn’t envision herself being with another girl; while she has imagined what it would be like to be with a boy, repeatedly and vigorously.
She has not had sex with anyone male or female.
Appearance:
  • 5ft 3in
  • 135lbs
  • Short Brown Hair
  • Hazel (Brown-Green) Eyes
Personality: Prudent, Practical, Rational, Soft-Hearted.
Anathema is a very smart young woman who believes in rational thinking and practical solutions to real world problems. In District 3 she looked forward to a promising career as a technical engineer or perhaps an inventor. However her name was drawn as Tribute for her district and Anathema decided to tackle the challenge head on. She relies on her intellect and ingenuity to solve most problems and doesn't believe in taking a defeatist attitude before the games have begun.

She does possess a soft heart. While she has no intellectual issue with the act of killing, and in fact recognizes that she will be required to if she is to survive the games as she intends; Anathema has no practical experience with ending the life of any creature greater than that of a cockroach.

Gotta be fair, I'm probably gonna change my pic...

There are a few little things that are pissing me off about his appearance...

I originally grabbed him up because of his youthful look, though he is pretty far removed from the character types I play visually.

Awww, I like the pic for Jimmy.

Here's my initial attempt at the whole profile and stat thing for one character.

Name: Gossamer Ocelli
Gender: Female
Age: 24
District: 8, Textiles
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
On & Offs: ChaNeko's On/Offs Gossamer's On/Offs – Gossamer does not associate her sexual being with emotion, instead viewing sexual acts as commodities to be traded for food, shelter, security. She is not asexual, but does not have a healthy relationship with intimacy. She is mercenary and without shame, using sex for her survival.
Appearance: Gossamer might have been pretty if she’d not starved for half her life. Severely malnourished, she suffers multiple obvious signs of catabolysis – anemia, inanition, kwashiorkor, muscle atrophy, skin depigmentation, thinning hair, etc. With glassy hazel-grey eyes that appear too large in her shrunken face, the stylists had to work carefully to bring life back into Gossamer’s lackluster brown hair and broken body before letting her teeter onscreen, her joints swollen with the additional strain of movement. (The model is much taller than I intend for Gossamer to be - just imagine her at that thinness while only 5' 1" tall, around 80 pounds.)
Personality: Irritable, lethargic, and impulsive, Gossamer takes advantage of anything she can to feed herself. Whatever she might have become if given half a chance in her early life, she clings to existence only by stubborn defiance of the alternative. The moment she was released from the imprisoning gurney the Peacekeepers had used to wheel her aboard the Capitol-bound train after her Reaping, she attacked the closest food, gorging herself quickly. Unable to keep the impossibly rich offerings down, she promptly became ill only to return to the food minutes later, trying again. Anything to live…
History: Never having known her father, Gossamer grew up in the dingiest corner of her already poor district, following her mother into prostitution for food and goods. Townsfolk and Peacekeepers used her alike, trading food for her body and participation as long as they wanted her to serve their lascivious needs. Her mother’s violent suicide did not improve her physical situation or that of her mental stability. Following mom’s path is her greatest fear. Left for dead by her community, the physically weakened woman worked desperately to gather anything edible, stealing when she could get away with it. Having lived this way for years from the evidence of starvation shown in her body, she never gained marketable skills, living as a fringe element surrounded by the trappings of civilization – silk, velvet, the finest linen.
Special note: There is an unusual concept for this character, already approved of by Lurking. The statistics shown here will be those used at the opening of the 73rd Hunger Games, but are not her ‘normal’ condition, nor will they remain consistent. If you feel there is anything to question, please contact ChaNeko by PM for a truncated explanation.

And my other proposed character:

Name: Heather Holtz
Gender: Female
Age: 20
District: 7, Lumber
Sexual Orientation: Undecided
On & Offs: ChaNeko's On/Offs Heather's On/Offs – Ons: Searching for rare plant life or fungi, making her authoritarian mother proud by being superior to the men around them. Offs: Coming in last, waiting until after the age of 25 to have a safe personal relationship – she never dared to start one thinking it could be destroyed at any reaping, but that doesn’t really matter anymore, does it?
Appearance: Heather has the same coloring as the men in her family; warmly toned skin, rich brown hair, and eyes that change from emerald to the loam of freshly turned earth. It’s her mother’s build she inherited, thank goodness, standing 5’ 6” at 120 pounds. While somewhat underfed, she’s leanly muscled with a softness of femininity she’s only learned about from stories, not practice.
Personality: Heather, at the moment of her Reaping, is still a virgin. Following the tenets of her family, she has avoided romantic intimacy, knowing that she was still of age to be pulled for the Hunger Games. Having avoided physical sex so far, she’s hoping that she’s prepared to use her wiles and body for any advantage in the competition… but it’s not an easy thing to do. Does she outright bargain for her life with someone in exchange for first use of her body? Will the increased adrenaline of the training break her emotional isolation before game start, needing comfort? Could she seduce another tribute (or better yet, a sponsor!) with her innocence? What if she had to seduce someone on the field with all those cameras recording… isn’t survival worth whatever comes later? And how would her family deal with the repercussions whether she lived or died? Is shame too high a price to pay for survival?
History: Heather’s family is the most important thing to her and she will attempt anything to get back to them. Her father and several brothers support her activities as she assists her mother with the collection and replanting of underbrush before their work crew clears a forest area for the lumber. Learning about botany has given Heather a calculating mind, prone to working out how best to resolve a problem by using nature’s bounty. As much as she doesn’t want to hurt anyone in particular, this is a competition where only one goes home – she just has to ensure that she is that one, even to the loss of life equaling 23 human beings. “We’re all mortal anyway. Experiencing the deep forest teaches that. Nature shows us how to be still, when to be aggressive, why we might kill. Life and death are just parts of the whole – and I’m ready to experience it all.” Heather thinks of herself as a scavenger, not because she or her actions are undesirable, but because she’s going to live off the demise of others, taking their assets for herself.

Ah, just when I thought I had the system working beyond reproach. ::)

The first point raised: hand to hand defense.

Yup, "Defence: Hand to hand attacks." means that Hand to Hand cannot defend against other up close attacks. It just made things simpler to have it not being usable against all attacks because using a hand to hand move to defend against, say, a sword, isn't really going to work, with swords being as long as they are, I can't really imagine using hand to hand successfully as defense against a sword during an attack. You're waay too likely to get your hands/arms/legs nicked when using them to defend. And there's just no way you could use hand to hand to defend against a two-handed battle axe attack. (Although lets face it, one of the tributes gets hold of a two-handed battle axe you're all screwed. ;))

However I am willing to think that hand to hand may be usable against a knife or throwing axe (if used as an up-close attack) due to their small size and light weight.

See to me trying to kick their weapon away seems more like an attack action than 'Defense'

I would consider kicking the weapon away as a defensive move, rather then an attacking one, as it's used to defer damage from the target, rather then inflict damage onto the attacker.

The game is based on pathfinder, which has a system for handling unarmed combat, though Lurks has heavily modified things so that system may not be in use.

Ah, no, that system isn't in use, mostly because I had no idea it existed, lol. Although this is based off of pathfinder, I only actually glance over pathfinder as a system once for another group game I joined that didn't go anywhere. I don't know it as a system very well at all, which is why I decided to create my own instead.

Also this reminded me that hand to hand is actually a half-damage attack. I thought I had already written it as such, but apparently not. Sorry if that messes up anyone's skill points, feel free to back and edit them it if does. Also I will change it that hand to hand can defend against knife, throwing axe or 'small weapon' attacks. Feel free to edit if that changes how you value hand to hand as a skill.

The second point raised was about the use of sticks.

What if you had something to parry with, even if it was only a foot length of a thick stick, it would make hand to hand a viable skill for blocking and parrying, wouldnt it?

Yup, you can use a stick to parry or block an attack from another weapon.

Items that can be picked up in the arena, such as a stick, and used as a weapon or defensive item will come with their own stats. So a stick would not count as a hand-to-hand roll. The stick would come with stats such as 'Stick: {Str/Dex} Rank: 2. Half-Damage Up-Close attack' or something. Therefore you would be able to use a stick to parry an oncoming attack.
Some items will also have a number of hits it can take before it breaks. If you used a stick to defend against an attack and the difference between the attacking roll and defensive roll is more then (say) 5, the stick will break and become unusable.

Also not all sticks will be usable as weapons. Most would be too frail to be remotely effective. You'd need to use perception to see if there's a usable stick around on the ground, or a thick enough branch on a nearby tree to cut off and use.

Dodge actually isn't the parry skill, that would be defense. Dodge is 'move your body out of the way of the oncoming attack' move. So sticks or any other weapon won't give you a bonus to dodge. If you want to use your weapon to parry an attack you use a defensive roll.

Sharpening a stick to a point would actually come under 'complex item making'. Basically altering any item to something new would do. Plus a stick with a sharpened point, if done correctly, would then count as a spear and take from the spear skill points. A rock tied to a stick would also come under complex item making, or possibly knot tying, or possibly both, depending on whether you alter the stick or rock in anyway. If you don't alter the rock or stick then it would just come under knot tying.

Does that cover everyone's comments/questions? Or have I missed something? :-)

Going to go look through the profiles posted now. ^.^

Thou art awesome, Lurking! Thanks for all the answers to my behind the scenes questions and for clearing up things here on the board!

(I have another one, lol - they never stop, do they?)

This is about the formula for 2 Skills, namely those that are dependent upon another related Skill:

Identify Plants & Insects: {Int}. Determines the success and how much knowledge can be gained from identifying plants and insects.
Natural Medicine: {Identify Plants & Insects, Int}. Cannot have more points in this skill then in Identify Plants & Insects. Determines the success and strength of creating Natural Medicines. Must have the necessary plants or insects in their inventory to create medicines.
&
Knot Tying: {Dex & Int}. Determines the success and strength of Tied Knots.
Complex Item Making: {Knot Tying, Dex & Int}. Cannot have more points in this skill then in Knot Tying. Determines the success and strength of Making Complex Items out of raw materials.

Let's say my character's Dex is 5 and her Int is 3. Her skills with either Identify Plants/Insects or Knot Tying are the minimum, 1s.
Thus, her initial base with Identify Plants/Insects is 4 and her Knot Tying is 5.
For simplicity, her skills with Natural Medicine and Complex Item Making are also the minimum, 1s.
Natural Medicine1 plus {Identify plants/insects1 PLUS Int3} = 5?
How do I calculate their base numbers... Complex Item Making1 plus {Knot Tying4 PLUS her (Dex5 & Int3 averaged=4)} = 9?

Or are those PLUSes supposed to be something else? Another average of what's inside the brackets?

Pretty sure I can answer this one.

The way the brackets work is: If there is a slash, {Str/Dex} you pick one or the other. If there is an and {Int & Dex} you take half and half, or like you said, the average. This rule holds true if you put them together as well. For the two "two tier" sets, I'm pretty sure the 1st tier is only in the 2nd tier is only as a reminder that you can't have more of it it than the first.
