Welcome to the 73rd Annual

Hunger Games

May the odd be ever in your favour

Summery

The 73rd games are promising to be as bloody and brutal as every game before it, with gamemakers preparing for months to make sure the audience get a game they’ll never forget. 24 tributes will enter the arena, only one will leave it alive. The reaping's are beginning, pulling forth the names of this years contenders; 24 vulnerable bright and terrified budding young men and women to fight for the honour of being crowned victor, by facing down the horrors challenges that the arena and fellow tributes have to offer.

This is a reboot of a game I started two years ago. Unfortunately due to real life commitments I was unable to put the time and effort into running this game that I would have liked to. Things have settled down a lot for me now and I’m eager to get this up and running again. I decided it made more sense to do a complete restart as it’s been a long time since the previous game was created and a lot a kinks/system issues were sorted out during the game-play. This way we can start fresh knowing that the gameplay has already had a beta run-through and a lot of issues already worked out.

Our games are set one year before Katniss Everdeen steps foot in the capitol. Panem is under strict rule of the capitol and President Snow. To everyone’s knowledge this isn’t going to change anytime soon. The game won’t be extending outside of the arena, so you only need to have seen the first movie or read the first book to know exactly what’s going on in the role-play.

The game lives and dies in the arena, as do your tributes.  We will start off in the training centre where the tributes will have a chance to size each other up, make alliances and enemies and come to terms with the cruel fate in front of them. They’ll then be transported to the arena and let lose to gradually narrow the numbers down to one. The arena itself is a heavily guarded secret, the only person who knows what they’re going to face is the gamemaker (me). It’s the same arena I decided on two years ago, as we never got that far into the gameplay last time.

We will be using a system created specifically for this game. It’s based off of the pathfinder system, but you don’t need to have any experience with pathfinder or game systems to be able to use ours. There will be time for everyone to get to grips with the system while the tributes are inside the training centre, so that everyone’s feeling comfortable with it when we moved into the arena. I am happy to talk everyone through the system one step at a time, I'm more then happy for people who have never used a system before to join and I will always be on the end of a pm if you need help/get confused about something.

The game will be going in the extreme part of the forum, as pain and murder are inevitable. There are 24 characters up for grabs, 12 men and 12 women. Each player can have up to two tributes each, though they cannot both be from the same district. All tributes are aged between 16-25, to keep things in accordance with E rules. Any tributes who aren’t claimed by a player will become NPCs controlled by the gamemaker, used to stir up trouble for the player’s tributes. If you leave the game after entering your characters into the role-play then they will become NPCs under the control of the gamemaker, to keep up with continuity for the rest of the players.

System

The system is points and dice roll based. There are four main attributes and 26 different skills that you can apply points to in order to boost your character’s efficiency at any specific skill. These will then be added to a 3d6 (3, six-sided dice roll) to determine your character’s points for that round, along with additional bonus points from items or the terrain.

Attributes

The four attributes are Strength, Dexterity, Intuition and Condition.

Minimum points: 2. Maximum points: 10. Points to Spend: 26.

The attributes represent your tribute’s natural abilities, which will boost their trained skills. Each skill will draw from one or more attribute, the points from that attribute are added to the points spent on that skill, which are then added to the 3d6. (Sword: 2  {Str})

Example
Player 1: Start Fire: 3. Intuition: 6. 3d6: 3+4+5. Roll: 3+6+3+4+5=21

Some skills will have a choice of which attribute to use. (Hand to Hand: 2  {Str/Dex}) In this case the character can use the higher of these two attributes to put towards the skill. The attribute used will determine what kind of action your character uses in the role-play. If your character favours strength then they might attack with a full force punch, if they favour dexterity then they might aim a kick at a sensitive area. Both attacks may do the same amount of damage, so it’s up to the character’s style of attack to determine which attribute they wish to use.

Example
Player 1: Hand to Hand: 3. Strength: 6. 3d6: 3+4+5. Roll: 3+6+3+4+5=21
OR
Player 1: Hand to Hand: 3. Dexterity: 6. 3d6: 3+4+5. Roll: 3+6+3+4+5=21

Other skills will draw from two attributes. (Crossbow: 2  {Str & Dex}) In this case you use half of each of those attributes to add towards your total score.

Example
Player 1: Weight-Lifting: 3. Strength: 6. Condition: 5 3d6: 3+4+5. Roll: 3+3+2.5+3+4+5=20.5

Skills

The skills are used to make moves within the arena. They are split into three categories, Weapons, Physical and Survival.

Minimum points: 1. Maximum points: 5. Points to Spend: 70

Weapons

Attack. Up-Close attacks can only be used when standing next to the target. Range attacks can be used from afar, the further away from the target the less damage it will do. Using a distance attack will remove the item from your inventory until it is re-collected. In the case of the bow & arrow and crossbow, you only lose the arrow or bolt.
Defence. Some weapons can be used to parry, or defend against, certain oncoming attacks.
Half-Damage. Certain weapons will only deal half the amount of damage or take half the defence compared to others. Although these weapons are weaker, they are often more versatile, being able to be used from a distance. Their score will be halved after the roll has been made.

There are nine weapon skills.

Hand to Hand: {Str/Dex}. Half-Damage Attack: Up-Close. Weak or void against certain armour. Defence: Hand to hand, knife, throwing axe or other small weapons (sticks, rocks, etc.) Up-Close attacks.
Sword: {Str}. Attack: Up-Close. Defence: Up-Close attacks.
Knife: {Dex}. Half-Damage. Attack: Up-Close or Range. Defence: Up-Close attacks.
Bow & Arrow: {Dex}. Half-Damage. Attack: Range. Defence: None.
Crossbow: {Str & Dex}. Attack: Distance. Range: None.
Axe: {Str}. Attack: Up-Close Attack. Defence: Up-Close attacks.
Throwing Axe: {Dex}. Half-Damage. Attack: Up-Close, Range. Defence: None.
Trident: {Str}. Attack: Up-Close. Defence: Up-Close.
Spear: {Dex}. Half-Damage. Attack: Up-Close, Range. Defence: Up-Close

Physical

There are eight physical skills.

Health: {Con}. A tribute’s total health points, and therefore how much damage they can take before they die, is decided by the (hit point skill + the condition attribute) x 4.
Dodge: {Dex & Int}. In response to an oncoming attack. Can be used against up-close and range attacks.
Swim: {Str/Dex & Con}. Determines how fast your tribute moves through water. Stronger currents will slow down their speed.
Climb: {Str/Dex & Con}. Determines how fast your tribute climbs up or over an object. Difficult surfaces will slow down their speed.
Sprint: {Str/Dex & Con}. Determines how fast your tribute moves over land. Rough terrain will slow down their speed.
Weight-Lifting: {Str & Con}. A base score will decide if they are strong enough to lift certain objects and if they can throw that object, and if so what distance.
Endurance: {Int & Con}. This skill will be added to other skills if their situation is particularly challenging. For example, Sprinting in desert heat or Weight-Lifting an object and carrying over a distance would both require the addition of the endurance skill.
Stealth: {Dex & Int}. Determines how close to a person or animal a tribute can get without being spotted. Can be thwarted by the target’s Perception and/or Track skill.

Survival

There are nine survival skills.

Perception: {Int}. Surveys one’s surroundings. The higher the roll the more details your tribute will pick out from their immediate area. Can be used to locate another tribute using Stealth.
Set/Disarm Trap: {Dex & Int}. Determines the success and power of setting a trap. Determines if a trap is successfully disarmed and if any useable parts can be dismantled from said trap.
Start Fire: {Int}. Determines the success and strength of a fire. The weather and material used will either aid or hinder Starting a Fire.
Identify Plants & Insects: {Int}. Determines the success and how much knowledge can be gained from identifying plants and insects.
Natural Medicine: {Identify Plants & Insects & Int}. Cannot have more points in this skill then in Identify Plants & Insects. Determines the success and strength of creating Natural Medicines. Must have the necessary plants or insects in their inventory to create medicines.
Track: {Int}. Determines the success of tracking prey. The terrain will either aid or hinder Tracking your prey. Can be used to Track tributes using Stealth.
Fish: {Dex & Int}. Determines the success and quality of catching Fish.
Knot Tying: {Dex & Int}. Determines the success and strength of Tied Knots.
Complex Item Making: {Knot Tying & Dex & Int}. Cannot have more points in this skill then in Knot Tying. Determines the success and strength of Making Complex Items out of raw materials.

Specialist Ability. Each tribute can chose one skill from the list above as their specialist ability. Each skill can only be claimed by one tribute. This will add +2 points to that skill when used.

Manoeuvres

One skill roll is allowed per post, except when responding to a skill roll aimed at your tribute, in which case you may roll once to respond to that skill and then roll again to initiate a skill move yourself.

Combat

The amount of damage that a character takes during combat is decided by two rolls, that of the attacker and that of the target. The attacker rolls first, then the target responds using one of three skills: attack, defend or dodge. Once the target has responded they can then make a new move themselves.

Attack. If the target responds with an attack is then both players will take the full amount of damage from each roll.

Example
Player 1: Attack. Sword: 3. Strength: 5. 3d6: 4+5+3. Roll: 3+5+4+5+3=20
Player 2: Attack. Sword: 2. Strength: 4. 3d6. 6+2+1. Roll: 2+4+6+2+1=15
Player 1 takes 15 damage. Player 2 takes 20 damage.

Defend. If the target defends themselves then the amount of damage to the target is determined by the difference between the attacking roll and the defending roll.

Example
Player 1: Attack. Sword: 3. Strength: 5. 3d6: 4+5+3. Roll: 3+5+4+5+3=20
Player 2: Defend. Sword: 2. Strength: 4. 3d6. 6+2+1. Roll: 2+4+6+2+1=15
Player 2 takes 5 damage.

Dodge. If the target dodges the attack then the amount of damage to the target is determined by the difference between the attacking roll and the dodge roll. If the dodge roll is higher then the attack roll then the difference between the attack roll and the dodge roll can be added to the following skills if they are played directly after the dodge roll: Swim, Climb & Sprint.

Example
Player 1: Attack. Sword: 3. Strength: 5. 3d6: 4+5+3. Roll: 3+5+4+5+3=20
Player 2: Dodge: 5. Dexterity: 10. Intuition: 8. 3d6: 4+5+3. Roll: 5+5+4+4+5+3=26
No one takes any damage.
Player 2: Sprint: 3. Dexterity: 10. Condition: 4. 3d6. 3+2+1. Bonus. Dodge: 6. Roll: 3+5+2+3+2+1+6=22

Chase

The distance between the two characters is decided by two rolls, that of the attacker and that of the target. The distance between each tribute is measured in seconds. A chase can be initiated by the skills: Sprint, Climb and Swim, depending on the terrain the tributes are travelling over.

Example
Player 1: Sprint: 3. Strength: 5. Condition: 6. 3d6: 1+2+3. Roll: 3+2.5+3+1+2+3=14.5
Player 2: Sprint: 4. Dexterity: 8. Condition: 5. 3d6: 4+5+1. Roll: 4+4+2.5+4+5+1=20.5
Player 1: 14.5 seconds. Player 2: 20.5 second. Player 1 is 6 seconds behind Player 2.

Either the pursuer or the target may move first, then the other responds using the same chase skill as the first. Once the second player has responded they can then make a new move themselves. The pursuer must be equal to or faster then the pursued before they can make a up-close attack towards the pursued.

Example
Player 1: Sprint: 3. Strength: 5. Condition: 6. 3d6: 1+2+3. Roll: 3+2.5+3+1+2+3=14.5
Player 2: Sprint: 4. Dexterity: 8. Condition: 5. 3d6: 4+5+1. Roll: 4+4+2.5+4+5+1=20.5
Player 1: 14.5 seconds. Player 2: 20.5 second. Player 1 is 6 seconds behind Player 2.
Player 2: Sprint: 4. Dexterity: 8. Condition: 5. 3d6: 1+3+3. Roll: 4+4+2.5+1+3+3=17.5
Player 1: Sprint: 3. Strength: 5. Condition: 6. 3d6: 6+6+6. Roll: 3+2.5+3+6+6+6=26.5
Player 1: 14.5+26.5=41 seconds. Player 2: 20.5+17.5=38 seconds. Player 1 is 3 seconds ahead of Player 2.
Player 1: Attack.

If the chase lasts more then a set number of moves the Endurance skill will have to be added to the roll. How many turns elapse before the Endurance skill is added depends on the terrain the tributes are moving over.

Example
Player 1: Sprint: 3. Strength: 5. Condition: 6. 3d6: 1+2+3. Roll: 3+2.5+3+1+2+3=14.5 Endurance: 2. Intuition: 6. Condition: 6. 3d6: 3+5+3. Roll=25. Total seconds: 14.5+25=39.5

Most skills are more straightforward, you only need a larger number then the other player to win. For example, a player using stealth will remain hidden if their roll is higher then the roll of the other player using perception to locate them. A trap can be disarmed if the player rolls higher then the number rank of the trap.

Hunger and Thirst Levels

All tributes have three counters to consider when in the arena: health, hunger and thirst. Health will remain constant until an outside force takes off points or adds points. Hunger and thirst levels, however, will go down by a set amount throughout the time in the arena. The total number of hunger and thirst points a tribute has is the same for all, regardless of what skills or attributes they favour. The total number of points that the hunger and thirst counters go down is the same for everyone, regardless of their physical activity of the day or what terrain they’re in. When the hunger and thirst levels reach 0 they will start to take points from the health counter instead. Points taken from health instead of hunger or thirst cannot be restored by any food, water or medicine.

Items

All items will hold a number value to them. Most items will aid by adding points to a certain skill, such as weapons and armour. Others will replenish your character’s stat points, such as food and medicine. There is no weight limit to what your characters can carry, nor does carrying a lot slow your character down in any way. However your character does only have two hands, so cannot equip more then a certain number of items at any one time, the rest must be carried. It takes one turn to change an equipped item.

Weapons. Each weapon is ranked from 0.5-7, the rank will be the number of points added to the skill of that weapon when used.
Small Body Armour. Gloves, boots, etc. Ranked 0.5-7, the rank determines the number of points added to all defensive moves. During combat they cannot be used to create a defensive skill by themselves. Can be used as defence against specific skills, I.E., boots will help protect your feet if you stand on a trap.
Large Body Armour. Breast plates, tunics, etc. Ranked 0.5-7, the rank determines the number of points added to all defensive moves. Large body armour can also be used to create a defensive skill against certain attacks, for example, full body armour can be used as a defensive skill against ranged attacks.
Shields. Ranked 2-10. A shield can be used to create a defensive skill instead of a weapon. Shields defend against up-close and ranged attacks.
Other Skill Boosting Items. There are a number of skill boosting items scattered around the arena, including matches, which aid in the Fire Starting skill, and lock picks, which aid in the Trap Disarming skill. These can all be picked up and carried around with your tribute. Some items are one-use, while others may break if you use them and fail to complete your skill of choice, I.E., you might break your lock picks if you fail to disarm a trap successfully.
Recovery. There are items out there to aid in the recovery of hunger, thirst or health by a set number of points. Some of these items come from the capitol and districts and are already identifiable to your tribute, however the items provided by the arena may need a certain skill roll from the identify plants and insects skill in order to be sure what you’re ingesting is in fact safe.
Medicines. These can be created out of items found in the arena, or received from the capitol. However only certain medicines work on certain types of wounds. For example, a burn cream will only work on burn wounds and cannot heal, say, a cut caused by a knife. You must have the right type of medicine for a wound to be able to heal it.
Possession. In the arena possession is ten tenths of the law. If you own it, it belongs to you. Items can be passed freely between tributes at any time. Items can be taken from other tributes at any time. If a tribute is killed then it is recommended the killer scavenges all of their items from the body before the body is removed from the arena; any items still on the corpse when it is removed will be gone from the arena for good.

Item List

All character sheets come with a space for a log of all the items your tribute currently has on their person. It’s imperative that this list is kept up to date from post to post.

Injury List

This is a log of all the injuries your tribute is currently suffering, along with the amount of damage each individual injury inflicted. This is also important to keep up to date for each post. This is partly so that people don’t forget damage done to their tribute, for example, if they’ve got a nasty gash in their leg from a sword, then they can’t suddenly forget to limp everywhere. Although injuries don’t impact on skills, such as sprint with a leg injury, it is important to keep the injuries going in the role-play. The other reason for this list is for the use with injury specific medicine. If your tribute was hurt by 10 points by a cut on their leg and they receive a set of sterilized stitches from the capitol which heals 20 points caused by cuts, you would only be able to heal your tribute those 10 points, even if their overall health is lower then 10 points. Once an injury is fully healed you can remove it from your log.

Terrain

The terrain can add bonus points or take away points when trying to use certain skills. For example, if you are up high with a clear view of the surrounding terrain, you will receive a bonus to all ranged attacks. If you are tracking an animal through the mud you will receive a bonus, but if you are trying to be stealthy and not leave tracks to be followed when walking through mud, you will receive a penalty.

Additional Information

Most of this information has been copied & pasted from THG Wiki.

Careers: A Career Tribute, commonly known simply as a Career, is a tribute who trains throughout their lives to compete in the Hunger Games and then volunteers to participate. Career Tributes tend to be the strongest, most agile players in the Hunger Games, having been prepared and trained since birth.
District 1: Career tributes. One of the wealthiest districts of Panem. Its primary industry is manufacturing luxury items for the Capitol.
District 2: Career tributes. one of the wealthiest districts of Panem. It's where most Peacekeepers are trained and weapons are manufactured. Publicly it's presented as the nation's stone quarries
District 3: Its main industry is technology. They specialize in televisions and computers.
District 4: Career tributes. One of the wealthiest districts of Panem. Its industry is fishing

District 12: Is the poorest district in the nation of Panem. District 12's main industry is coal mining.

Let me know what district and gender you're planning for your character and I will put them on reserve for you. It's always annoying to finish writing up a whole character sheet only to find that someone else nabbed your chosen district first. The district/gender combination is available unless it's crossed out.

Hi Silver, the game's very accessible for people who have never played system games before, if you have any questions about the system I'm more then happy to answer them. :-)

No problem. :-)
This doesn't have to end in a fight, Buck.
It always ends in a fight.
You pulled me from the river. Why?
I don't know.

Where do we work on / post characters?

Do we do it in Private messages or is there a public post somewhere to work on stuff.

For something like hunger games it sounds like it might be a good idea to keep things secret, but given that it's a new game system, you might some kind of public forum to exchange common question so you dont have to answer the same question six times.  (or am i missing the obvious and this is the thread)

sorta... new... so the obvious, not so obvious to me.

You can post/work on character profiles here if you like. Or you can do so over private message.

All of the character profiles will be public once they're finished anyway, so posting it here might be the easiest thing, it's up to you. :-)

As for common questions, this is the thread for that at the moment. Once we get going a little more I'll set up an ooc thread and a character profile thread. ^.^

District 11 ~ Grace Sutton

Name:Grace Sutton
Gender:Female
Age:16
District:11
Sexual Orientation:
Undecided
Grace is young and lives in a harsh world, she's focused on the goal of staying alive.  The concept of romance ranks way down on her priorities.
On & Offs:
Ons
Staying on plot, doing what makes sense, and being creatively brilliant will draw my admiration and desire to do the same.
Offs
Being childish, inconsiderate, self centered, spiteful, or any other behavior counter productive to fun, or doing things that make no sense in the scope of the situation, are all frowned upon by me and will most certainly make me unhappy.  I'm a nice person, why would you want to do that?
Appearance:
Appearance
Generataions ago, the Sutton family left the rocky shores of Europe to settle on the lands that would some day become District 11.  Once prosperous, the family fortunes were decimated during the uprising and war with Capital.  What was left in the wake was just another family to toil in the fields to feed the gluttonous appetites of an unappreciative overmaster.  Grace is a product of her environment.  Days of toil in the sunny fields have left her naturally fair skin permanently bronzed and tanned.  In a family too large to feed itself, the bulk of what they got went to her brothers, who toiled in the field with backbreaking labour.  Malnutrition has left Grace undernourished and underweight.  Though her naturally petite build does not threatening, years of work in the field have left her with a wiry strength in body and will to survive at all cost.  At age 16, Grace stand 5'0 in bare feet and 98 pounds after showering.  She has auburn hair cut short, in a messy bob.  Her eyes are often wary, but in unguarded moments, her green eyes seem to twinkle in a rather fetching manner.  Grace almost never smiles, often a defiant tense scowl, at best a relaxed contemplative and pensive sad smile, her smiles are saved for her family whom she now believes she will never see again. A vague southern drawl colors her speech patterns.

History:
RP Fluff
It's a brutal world, and a strategy for making certain that some of your young survive is often to have as many as you can afford to have.  It was a strategy that the Sutton Family had applied with only modest success.  When Grace's father was taken from the family by an occupational accident, it left the family in dire straits.  Barely able to make ends meet, they were forced to do things they would otherwise preferred not to do.  Grace along with her older brothers went to right away to the fields to do work with the adults.  School was a waste of time, they all knew that this was the life they were born to, and would end up going to their graves doing.  Grace's brother took naturally to the back breaking labor that was involved in farming.  Early on, it was obvious that the work did not suit Grace.  She was determined to help the family though.  She was fit, young, and most importantly motivated.  She toiled as best she could in the fields till pity if nothing else earned her something more suitable to her.  She was assigned to pest control, and would wander the fields, often alone, to make certain that they remained clear of the birds would would come and poach the fruits of their blood and sweat.  Days were spent contemplating ploys, and putting them to test to keep the fields clear.  Early attempts at running about, making noise, and pitching stones while effective were of limited value.  Using things found about the compound grace, went about crafting scarecrows... wind chimes... whatever she could think of to help her keep the fields clear.  It wasnt enough, the Sutton family was slowly starving out.  Grace was the oldest, and the first to reach an age appropriate for the hunger games.  To earn her family supplies they desperately needed her name had gone into 'the bowl' more than a few times.  Perhaps one time too many.  On the day of the Reaping, Grace Sutton was called.  Her siblings stood helpless too young to volunteer in her place, were forced to watch her go.

Game is fine by itself, but i have a question about the age and sexual orientation issue.

Hunger games ran from very young to late teens.

This is fine for the novel and a free standing story, but i know that its noted somewhere that characters need to be a certain and a maturity level to engage in adult stuff.

I just want to get an official ruling on how you want to handle this.

Nevermind.  I see the answer.

Updated the taken specialist ability list.

& Yup, we've upped the ages of the characters to fit into E's rules. ^.^

Here's my interest...  :-)

With a character to follow later... ^^

Any gaps in the line-up I could maybe fill though? Seems there's quite a few choices and I don't wanna to be too proactive if I end up playing an exact duplicate of someone else's character, stats-wise.
