[Interest Check] - The Underworld Tournament
« on: July 26, 2015, 04:43:10 PM »

Unknown to all but a select few, an ancient island exists somewhere in the sea. It has existed since ancient times and within it sits a city carved entirely out of stone. Long since abandoned, yet it's buildings and pathways seem not to crumble or wear. It's entry is guarded by an imposing stone sentinel, silently watching over the lone waterway that leads to it's interior. For much of the year it is empty, abandoned, the island itself enshrouded by fog, making navigation past the rocky sea around it all but impossible. Even stranger, the layout of these treacherous rocks seem to change with each day. Yet the fog does clear, on a single day every ten years. Upon the eclipse of that tenth year the shroud is washed away, allowing safe navigation. One week later, the curtain parts again, allowing safe passage once more.

Those privileged few that know of the island know if it's darker secrets. That it is a nexus that connects to worlds not of our own. To the underworld, to limbo, and to the heavens above. On the day of the eclipse these worlds align with our own and allow passage between. This unnamed island, once every ten years, plays host to both humanity and creatures unknown and supernatural. Every five years the island goes from serene silence to chaos and activity. Every ten years The Underworld Tournament is held.

The richest of the rich of humanity gather to place absurd wagers upon the combat that takes place here. The best martial artists humanity has to offer compete with and against supernatural creatures from other planes of existence. Teams of three fight for supremacy, with the winning team getting their heart's desire granted by the mysterious creature known only as Gilgamesh, judge and founder of the tournament.

Synopsis: I've decided to resurrect the most successful game I've ever run; The Dark Tournament. The old version was connected to the anime Yu Yu Hakusho, but this time I've decided to go a bit more generic to make sure it's accessible to everyone. The premise is simple; you have been invited take part in The Underworld Tournament, a combat tournament held once every ten years at an extremely remote location in the human world. Teams of three vie against one another for the chance to make it to the finals, with the winner of the tournament getting their hearts desire granted. The tournament lasts for a week and so the game will alternate between combat days where the tourney advances, and free days where players can socialize and flesh out relationships. You may play the species of your choice, from the plane of existence of your choosing; demon, human, nephilim, angel, other - it's up to you. You may join other players and work as a team, or control all the characters on your own team of three. You can make them as in-depth as you choose. The battle system will use E's dice roller and be extremely simple.

Battle System:
1. All characters get 15 HP.
2. Player rolls 2d20.
-1 is a critical miss and the character loses a turn. Any roll of a 1 means a turn is missed and no damage is done.
-2 to 14 is a miss and nothing happens.
-15 to 19 is a hit and the opponent takes one damage.
-20 is a critical hit and the opponent takes two damage and the player gains an extra turn. Only one extra turn is granted, even if the player rolls two 20's.
3. When a character gets to zero health, he/she/it is knocked out and loses.
4. Battle rules can be modified for each round if both players agree on the changes. This can be done to fit player desires or story conditions they may have planned.
5. Results of all rolls must be linked to in each post with a roll.

The Ring Announcer
"Ready? Set? LIVE OR DIE!"

Human or not? Good or evil? Angel or demon? Nobody knows, save perhaps for Gilgamesh. She calls herself Ringabel, though this is not likely her actual name. Most just call her 'the ring announcer' or 'the ref'. She announces all matches, all victories, and makes minor judgement calls when needed. While bigger decisions are left to Gilgamesh, Ringabel presides over any minor issues best left to a person on the ground. She has a love of violence and action, though loathes to have to dish out any punishment for herself. More of a voyeur than anything else. She provides excitable running commentary on all the matches. Nobody ever sees her outside of the arena, so it's questionable as to where she goes when a match is not on.

"Prove yourselves... worthy."

The unknown and unknowable ruler of The Underworld Tournament, last resident of the Forgotten City within which it takes place, granter of desires, and all-around mysterious being. She seems to hold no favor to heaven nor hell and seems interested in only holding this tournament. Why she has allowed humans and other creatures to inhabit the island is a mystery. She has some kind of ulterior motive, but it is completely unknown. Gilgamesh spends most of the time in her private box high above the area, only making appearances for the final round of the tournament and when the time has come to grant the winners their wishes.

Team Daidouji
Played by MissFire

Urika Daidouji
Urika Daidouji
Human, Female

A wandering martial artist from Osaka, Japan. Having grown up in a dojo run by her father, Urishima Daidouji, Urika was surrounded by combat from an early age. She was throwing punches since she could stand up and it's no surprise that she wound up a master of multiple forms of martial arts. After mastering her family's style she left on a so-called 'warrior's journey'. Packing a duffel bag with food and clothes, she wandered the country in search of strong opponents against which to test her mettle. While not quite as easy in modern day Japan as it was during the old days, Urika still managed to make a living and occasionally meeting fearsome opponents in battle. The fiercest came when she met up with Fuujin, a demon who'd escaped into the mortal plane. Hiding in the guise of a normal human woman, Fuujin had been dominating the underground fighting circuit and cleaning house - at least until she met up with Urika. The two fought and a strong friendship was formed.

Urika is a master of most forms of hand-to-hand combat, possesses almost supernatural stamina, strength, and durability.

Fuujin The Oni
Shemale, Demon

Like most demons raised in the underworld, Fuujin spent much of her life running and hiding from things bigger than her until she was strong enough to fight back. When you live in the world where some monsters grow as big as skyscrapers, it's much wiser to run than to fight. At least until you can manage a sneak attack. Fuujin worked her way up the proverbial food chain, so to speak, until she was strong enough to stand on her own. A magic barrier partitions the human world and the underworld, it's energies tuned to keep the strongest of demons away from the human world. While still weak enough to slip through this 'fence' between worlds, Fuujin snuck through and made her home in Japan. Disguising herself as a human woman, she lived a life of excess, fighting, drinking, screwing. All things her type of demon loves to do. She made a name for herself in the underground fighting circuit and eventually wound up fighting against Urika Daidouji. The pair fought for a solid three hours and in the end, both of them dropped due to exhaustion. By then, the crowd had long since dispersed. Astounded that neither of them had won, the pair laughed and became fast friends. They began a journey together, where they wound up meeting a rather strange woman.

Fuujin is a martial arts master, excelling in wresting and boxing. She is unbearably strong and possesses inhuman durability.

Topsy The Clown
Big Top The Clown
Female, Human (?)

Owner of an off-beat attraction known as 'The Circus of Strange', she is known only as Big Top The Clown. Her friends call her Tops or Topsy. She owns and operates a circus containing a variety of sideshows, acrobatic acts, and dangerous stunts like knife throwers, sword swallowers, and fire breathers. A patron of the strange and unusual, she calls herself a 'curator of curiosity'. Charismatic, yet mysterious, her origin is somewhat shrouded in mystery. She has a British accent, yet says she isn't from the UK. When asked where she is actually from, she remains ambiguous. While on their travels, Urika and Fuujin happened across Topsy's circus and the clown seemed to take a vested interest in them for some unknown reason. She presented the pair with a strange new item in her collection; tickets to The Underworld Tournament. She offered the tickets to the two, telling them they'd find the fights they were looking for. The one catch; the clown had to go with them. Urika and Fuujin accepted.

Big Top is an excellent fighter with her cane and an excellent magician and sleight of hand expert.

15 HP seems like a lot for how little damage you'll be doing. The system works out to an expected value of less than 1 per turn, so it would take about 20 turns or so for a victory.

Then we can take it down by five.

That's still a lot of turns. Did you run this system in the last game you mentioned?

If the fighters aren't going to level up or have different stats then it's basically a drawn out coin flip. I'd recommend starting with how many rounds you want combat to last, then having each player roll a die. Keep a cumulative total running, and at the end of the last round the highest total wins. The difference between the totals can be interpreted as how badly one side is winning/losing. If you want to spice it up from there, you can make a 1 or a 20 end the fight immediately. The number of rounds could be more/less depending on the importance of the fight. Maybe 3-5.

If you're not interested in the system I've come up with, then there's no need to participate.

I actually like the system. It reminds me of how most fights I'm anime are drawn out even if a character was to lose.

I'm just trying to give you some advice to avoid your game bogging down with fights that last for dozens of posts. Especially since a lot of posters here can't swing the kind of rapid responses needed to keep that from becoming months of real time.
