History of Talingarde

The Rise of House Darius

Talingarde may be a peaceful and prosperous kingdom at the start of the campaign, but the nation has certainly had a troubled past. Only eighty years ago, the kingdom weathered a bitter war of succession fought between the largely half-elven nobility of House Barca and the human dynasty of House Darius. Both had claim to the throne and their supporters amongst the fractured nobility of the isle.

On the Plains of Tamberlyn just north of the capital city, two great armies met and decided the future of this dominion. One army was commanded by King Jaraad of House Barca, a great half-elven hero mounted on a griffon, the symbol of his house. The other was led by Markadian of House Darius, a young upstart paladin who would not bow before all the gods of the Talirean pantheon (in particular Asmodeus).

The Battle of Tamberlyn remains the most famous conflict in all of Talingarde’s history. House Darius was gravely outnumbered but far more fiercely committed to their holy cause. Much of House Barca’s army was paid mercenaries fighting for nothing more than gold.

The Battle was fought between two large stone spires (the so-called Lords of Tamberlyn) that rise from otherwise level ground. A small brook splits the spires crossed only in one place by an ancient stone bridge. The brook is not deep but still would be difficult for men in armor to cross.

Markadian took to the field first, seizing the bridge with his knights and positioning infantry on both his right and left flank. The famed archers of Barrington and Embryl, with their mighty longbows of yew, were positioned behind the infantry.

Outnumbering his foe many times, King Jaraad hoped for a quick victory and sent his mercenary crossbowmen forward to bombard the knights on the bridge. The hope was that a few volleys of crossbow shot would kill many of the knights and paladins of House Darius. Deprived of their leadership, the rest of the soldiery would likely flee from the battlefield when the king moved the bulk of Barca’s army forward.

However, the crossbowmen advanced too close and the infantry on Darius’ right flank performed a surprise charge. The charge caught the mercenaries off guard and they fled with hardly a shot fired.  So disgusted was the knight commander of Barca behind the mercenaries that he ordered his knights to charge forward through the “cowardly retreating rabble” to attack the relatively exposed Darian infantry. The result was a chaotic muddle of panicked mercenary and tangled knights. It was then that the Darian archers begin to fire their volleys. The arrows rained down on the knights and took a princely toll on the Barcan force.

King Jaraad saw the muddle that his left had become and ordered the other pincer of his army forward. They moved swiftly at first along the banks of the brook but soon found themselves equally bogged down in mud. They too began to receive a hail of arrows.

Finally the Barcan left pushed through the mercenaries and charged the bridge. It was here that the heaviest fighting of the battle took place. On the bridge of Tamberlyn the knights of Darius met the full might of the Barcan army and held the line. The Barcan army was packed in so tight trying to cross the bridge that there rear ranks were at the mercy of the Embryllian archers.

King Jaraad could watch the slaughter no longer. He flew his elite personal command – a dozen knights on griffons to the other side of the bridge hoping to flank the defenders and break their line. What he encountered instead was the young Lord Markadian and his personal guard.

The battle between Markadian’s knights and the griffon riders has been immortalized in several songs and plays. Suffice to say that after a great battle, a dozen dead griffons littered the field and only Markadian of Darius and King Jaraad of Barca remained combatant. They fought fiercely and in the end, Markadian slew Jaraad upon the banks of the Tamberlyn brook and claimed the throne of Talingarde.

At the end of the day, the battle had proved to be a slaughter. The military might of House Barca was broken and House Darius came to power. It would have been easy then for House Darius to seek revenge against their former enemies but instead King Markadian I called the Victorious showed mercy.

He allowed the nobles of House Barca to keep their lands if they would only swear loyalty to the new king and bow before the great god Mitra. The offer was accepted and peace once more came to Talingarde. The crisis of succession was over and the religion of the isle was decided. Mitra the Shining Lord became head of the Talirean pantheon.

The Victor upon the Throne

When Markadian I came to power there was great uncertainty of how capable a king he would prove. While he was a great warrior, he had never ruled and there was reason to doubt this young paladin could control this divided land. He soon put those doubts to rest.

Markadian I called the Victorious (usually simply The Victor these days) was the sort of ruler that only comes once every thousand years. At the battle of Farholde he dealt the bugbears of the north a savage defeat and scattered them for a generation. He confronted the pirates who had made the western coast of Talingarde their stronghold and burnt them out. It seemed that the Victor was undefeatable upon the field of battle.

So fearsome was his reputation that by the later years of his reign, he merely sent a letter to a rebellious warlord in the west that read, “Must we meet on the fields on war?” The warlord relented and became a loyal subject. By the end of the Victor’s reign, almost all of the island south of the Watch Wall was firmly a part of Talingarde. Only a few parts of the great and trackless forest, the Caer Bryr, remained wild and unmapped.

More than a soldier, he also proved a great builder and statesman. He raised the capital Matharyn from a small city into a great metropolis. He reinforced the watch wall, commissioning three new fortresses. He eased tariffs bringing merchants from the mainland to the oft-isolated isle once more. He personally visited the Lands of the Yutak tribesmen in the north and made peace with their great chiefs. And though the paladin spread the religion of Mitra and discouraged devotion to Asmodeus he tolerated the Prince of Nessus’ temples as long as they were discrete.

For forty six years the Victor sat upon the throne bringing a golden age to Talingarde. Today, his statues are to be found in almost every town and hamlet throughout the kingdom. He did have his faults though. Like so many great rulers – he was a great soldier and king but a poor father.

The Scholar and the Monster

After the death of the Victor, his oldest son Martius ascended to the throne as King Markadian II called the Learned. More a scholar than a king, Martius proved largely disinterested in affairs of state. He commissioned the great library at Matharyn and began renovation of an old family castle into the great palace known as the Adarium. As the first wing of the Adarium was completed, he retreated there and was rarely seen in public.

The other son, Prince Hallen, was not so reserved. Though he had no official power, he often ruled in the king’s absence and commanded great loyalty from the knights of the realm. This might have been an acceptable arrangement. After all, Prince Hallen was a soldier and an heir of the Victor. He could have become the de facto ruler while the official king sat in his distant pleasure palace and library. Alas, that Prince Hallen was also mad.

Prince Hallen became convinced that his mother (who had died in childbirth) was not the queen but an angel of Mitra. He believed himself a demigod and incapable of wrong. At first the Prince’s madness was subtle. He often dressed all in white and even had a magic set of wings made for himself that allowed him to soar over the capital.

But in time the visions began. He communed with these so-called angels and they whispered that he should replace his brother and become the true and immortal master of Talingarde. The king received disturbing reports of the prince’s madness and plots but refused to believe them. “My brother but jests,” is famously what Markadian II replied to the reports.

Finally the “angel” prince would wait no longer. He flew to the Adarium and with a flaming sword slew his own brother amidst his books and proclaimed himself Markadian III called the Immortal. His brother’s six year reign was at an end.

For a brief time, it was possible that Markadian III’s claim of kingship might have been acknowledged. His brother after all was little loved and tongues wagged that getting rid of the absent king was a blessing. Maybe the new king was a divine messenger of Mitra’s will. But within days the mad decrees began from the Adarium. The king decreed that Mitra’s high holy day would no longer be the summer solstice but instead would become his own birthday. He ordered the military to prepare to invade Hell and commanded his wizards to research opening a great gate. First, he explained to his flabbergasted advisors, the army would go through the gate to the shining realm of Mitra himself to call forth an army of angels. Then he personally would lead the host to invade the nine hells and overthrow Asmodeus himself.

Finally the people had enough of this madness. Officially, the histories record that after only five months in power Markadian III called the Mad tried to fly from the highest spire of the Adarium without his magic wings. More likely, he was thrown from the spire by paladins who would tolerate no more of this madman’s blasphemies. Whatever the truth, his reign was over.

Blame the Devil

Fortunately for Talingarde, Martius (Markadian II) had a son -- Marcus. The grandson of the Victor was neither mad nor a recluse. He had been clever enough to avoid the Adarium and the capital during Prince Hallen’s angelic rampage. Marcus was a handsome knight twenty nine years of age and closely resembled his grandfather the Victor. Thus was Talingarde spared another disastrous war of succession.

Marcus returned to the capital and was crowned Markadian IV called the Zealous. The new king quickly realized that he needed to solidify his power and explain away the difficulties of the last six and a half years. In short, he needed an enemy to unify this fractured Talirean nation. He found one – in the Temple of Asmodeus.

King Markadian IV blamed the cult of Asmodeus for using their black magic to summon a devil to possess the former king thus driving him mad. It was a brilliant political solution (though an utter fiction). It removed blame from the royal house of Darius and instead placed guilt squarely upon a small, unpopular, marginalized cult. This was the beginning of the Asmodean Purges.

The Knights of the Alerion took the lead in destroying the temples. High priests were burned at the stake and the sect was driven underground. For twelve years, the Zealot sat upon the throne and during that time he did his best to annihilate the cult of Asmodeus. He very nearly succeeded.

Markadian IV died comparatively young, only 41 years old of a mysterious illness. There were rumors that the Cult of Asmodeus had placed a curse upon the king. These rumors only fuelled the purges further.

A Brave New King

Markadian IV was followed by Markadian V, his son. Twenty-two when he took the throne (the same age as the Victor), he has ruled for sixteen years as a capable, energetic king who has done much to put bad memories in the past. Beloved by his people, he has proven again and again he is the true heir of the Victor. Early in his reign, he personally led the army to relieve the Watch Wall after another bugbear incursion. It was on the watchtower walls that he earned himself the title The Brave.

Markadian V has continued the prohibition against the cult of Asmodeus but does not pursue the purges with the same vigor as his father. After all, that battle is largely won. No one has heard of an Asmodean cultist in Talingarde for years. Instead, he turns his attention to the west and the north hoping to be the king who brings the entire island of Talingarde under his dynasty’s dominion.

He has failed in one duty however. He has failed to yet produce a son. Instead, he has only one child -- a beautiful, brilliant young princess named Bellinda. Twenty years of age, she is already a prodigy of arcane magic. If her father produces no heir it is an open question whether the men of Talingarde will follow a queen instead of a king. Her story is yet to be written.

Regions of Talingarde

The Six Regions

Talingarde is an archipelago consisting of more than a hundred islands. This archipelago may be divided into six regions each with their own unique character: The Cambrian Ports, The Heartland, the Borderlands, the Caer Bryr, the Savage North and the Land of the Yutak.

The Cambrian Ports

This is the center of the nation of Talingarde and the apex of its culture and power. This region is defined by three great metropolises – the capital Matharyn, the northern city of Ghastenhall, and the eastern port of Daveryn. Each of these three cities will receive more detail in later volumes of this adventure path.

The Heartland

This is where most of the population of the nation of Talingarde lives and works. Seemingly one quaint village after another, this is a land of endless farmlands broken up only by small stretches of well-managed forest. Those who truly understand the nation understand that the Heartland is Talingarde’s strength. The cities may create its riches and culture, but without the stalwart yeomanry, country knights and hearty folk of the field, Talingarde would be only a dream.

The Borderlands

Located between the Heartland and the Savage North, this border region represents the limits of Talirean power. Unable to fully conquer the north after centuries of incursion and brutal conflict, it was King Accarius IV of House Barca called the Architect who constructed the first version of the Watch Wall. In more educated circles it is still called the Accarian Line.

Accarius constructed nine castles guarding the border. Later Markadian I called the Victorious would add three more. Whoever controlled these castles could effectively prohibit access to the Heartland from the North. The Watch Wall was intended to contain the monsters and savages so that eventually the rest of the isle could be conquered and pacified. It was never meant to be the permanent measure it has become.

The success of the Watch Wall has bred complacency. Why invade the north when the south is so prosperous? The Watch Wall does such a fine job of repulsing the illled assaults of the barbarous humanoid invaders. Thus today, the Watch Wall is little regarded as a pressing military concern. The twelve castles are garrisoned and maintained but little is done to capture the Savage North.

The Caer Bryr

The Western frontier of the island is dominated by the massive forest that gives this region its name. Small Talirean border towns flourish in the less wooded south, but the north remains a land of mists and legends. The Caer Bryr is reputed to be haunted and filled with monsters. There are tales of dragons and ancient evils that still haunt the woods. The only ones who are able to travel here with impunity are the barbaric Iraen, a primitive human tribe that reveres the spirits of the woods.

The Iraen neither revere Mitra nor pay homage to the king, instead preferring their own crude animistic faith and barbaric chieftains. Worse, in times of hardship the Iraen can be quick to turn to banditry against Talirean settlements. Thus their relationship with Talingarde is strained at best. Still, beside the occasional raid or skirmish, there has never been large-scale warfare between the Iraen and theTalireans.

The Savage North

Beyond the Watch Wall lays the Savage North. Often this land is said to be nothing but an empty waste of ice and monsters. This is a complete fiction. The north is dominated by forests and plains rich in life. Here dwell three peoples long demonized or ignored by the more civilized folk of the south – the brutal burabar (the name the bugbears call themselves), the naatanuk (intelligent polar bears) and the mysterious ice elves.

Though little is known about the North, this is certain – it is largest unexplored region on the island. Many a Talirean king has dreamt of conquering the North. So far, those dreams remain unfulfilled.

The Lands of the Yutak

This chain of islands is inhabited by the Yutak, short swarthy black-haired humans. These islands are cold, inhospitable places unsuited to farming or grazing, so the Talireans have left the Yutak to their own devices.  Where the southerners see wastelands, the Yutak see oceans teaming with fish and seals. In their one-man kayaks and larger umiaks, they ply the open oceans hunting for fur and blubber. Occasionally, several small bands will unite to hunt a whale.

Rarely, an umiak will appear out of the mist loaded with ivory and furs. These Yutak umiaks will sail into one of the western ports (a few have made it as far south as Daveryn), conduct their business and then disappear once more. The Yutak never trade for gold instead prizing steel, leather and strong drink. Wise merchants keep a stock of steel harpoon heads in case they encounter a Yutak trader. The Yutak will trade much ivory for a finely made harpoon.

Few Talireans speak the strange musical Yutak tongue and few Yutak understand common. The Yutak, much like the savage Iraens of the Caer Bryr, have their own gods and their own way of life. Still, where the Iraen are secretive and xenophobic, the Yutak are a gregarious people. Travellers along the western coast tell tales of Yutak who without invitation join Talireans around a campfire. The Yutak share their seal meat and sing strange but beautiful songs with strangers with whom they share no tongue. It is said that if you are polite and share your own food, the Yutak may leave a gift to mark their passing.

Our Story

Where You Begin

In the kingdom of Talingarde, many crimes may send you to Branderscar Prison, but the sentence has but one meaning. You are wicked and irredeemable. Each of you received the same greeting when you arrived. You were held down by rough hands and branded upon the arm with a runic F. The mark signifies ‘forsaken’ and the painful scar is indelible proof that each of you has betrayed the great and eternal love of Mitra and his chosen mortal vassals.

Condemned, you face at best a life of shackles and servitude in the nearby salt mines. Others might await the “gentle” ministrations of the inquisitors so that co-conspirators may be revealed and confessions extracted. Perhaps, some of you will be spared this ordeal. Perhaps instead you have come to Branderscar to face the final judgment. In three days, the executioner arrives and the axe falls or the pyre will be lit. Through fire or steel, your crimes will be answered.

You have all been chained together in the same communal cell dressed in nothing but filthy, tattered rags. Manhandled and mistreated, any finery you once possessed is either ruined or long lost. No special treatment has been given any prisoner – male or female, commoner or noble – all of the forsaken are bound and imprisoned together. Your feet are secured by iron cuffs tethered by one long chain. Your arms are secured to the wall above by manacles. A guard is posted right outside the cell day and night. Little thought is given to long term accommodations. At Branderscar, justice comes swift and sure.

Escape seems hopeless. You have all been well searched and every attempt to conceal anything on your person has failed. And if you could somehow slip your bonds and fly out of this prison, where would you go? Who from your former life would want anything to do with the forsaken? Despised, alone and shackled – all that you can do now is await your doom.

For each of you, your old life is over. For each of you, hope is a fading memory. For each of you, justice will be fairly  meted. And who can blame fair Talingarde after what each of you has done?

The reason I'm sad isn't because I'm weak, it's because one of my primary abilities as a cleric is keyed off of Charisma.

Since the dicebot seems to be rather stubborn to some people, I'll go ahead and amend the Focus and Foible to the 4 rolled stats must have a total mod bonus of at least a +3 and you can choose from two stat lines that meet that quota.  Any stat line that is less than that can be rerolled.

Sol, you can roll another stat line until it comes up as a +3 total mod bonus for the 4 of them and choose which of them you want.

Latooni, neither of those lines meet the benchmark, so reroll until you get two lines above +3 mod bonus.

Vek, you get one more stat line, but given the one you PMed me, you probably won't need it.

By the way Loki, are we getting the extra 2 skill points per level they mention in WotW?

Think we do get +2 skill points per level (it's what Loki told me over Skype), so a low int may not hurt as much as a low con certainly will. And more cha lets you get further eldritch heritage feats >_>

My first roll netted a measly +1 all together, but the second was VERY kind. Before racial modifiers, Lisette's stats are:

STR: 8
DEX: 17
CON: 15
INT: 17
WIS: 14
CHA: 18

I'm waffling between Half-elf and (green widow) Changeling for her. The Piper (specifically with the Born Charmer racial trait, to help her lure in more poor potential slave girls) would fit the backstory I have in mind perfectly but it looks like there's a little concern in the comments about the Mystic Voice trait being potentially OP. Thoughts from our nobel GM and wicked wicked wizard? :P

Yup, forgot to mention that everybody gets an additional +2 skill ranks every level.

As for the Mystic Voice, that does seem rather OP since they get Still Spell without the feat or spell slot the cost.  Not to mention removing penalty for wearing armor.  If you want it, I think I'll amend it to being able to use the ability a number of times per day as your character level and it still requires the +1 level increase as if using Still Spell.

Yeesh that's better than what I rolled O_o

A half-elf can start with +12 diplomacy check
+1 rank +5 cha +3 skill focus +2 negotiator +1 trait

So can the Piper, I suppose, but she's putting a normal feat into Skill Focus then. On the other hand, like clerics, oracles aren't very dependent on feat selection.

She's playing an oracle, so she is a divine caster, and she can never use silent spell. Alternately, could take elven soul, and swap 'mystic voice' out for some elven trait. Pipers seem to be a good candidate for a sort of elven variant.

At the start of the campaign, Keriath is of course rather less clothed (not at all), and his tails are also completely bound.

He tries to avoid letting on that he is a magician - at least at a glance. He'll wear a sword if he can find one and practices his spells when witnesses can't talk about it. He covers his claws with gloves when he can, and speaks carefully so as to not reveal his fangs. He will take to flying when he knows his nature - at least in part - has been revealed.

By far his most noticeable and vulgar feature, his tails he will try to hide under or work into his garments, though at their length he's had to get somewhat creative.

Keriath yearns for the day when he can take what is rightfully His with impunity.

Jasmine has her awesome stats: At 2014-10-06 01:09:54, Jasmine Winters (uid: 49010) rolls: 4d10 Result: 22

So looking like:
18
15
14
12
9
8

Everybody gets two stat lines where the rolled mod is +3 or better to choose from. Roll another if you haven't already.

Boy do I have terrible luck sometimes

Roll 1: 15, 14, 9, 17

Roll 2: 10, 12, 12, 17

Not sure if any of these are good or bad, but the first role looks better than the second.

I'm going to be a Cavalier, so I guess my Focus and 17 should go into Strength and Charisma?

Hey all!

I hate to do this, but I think it is a fine brit better to do now than later.

I am just running into the exhaustion of my workweek and realizing why I said I was ONLY free Thursday.  I am pretty sure I would completely burn out if I filled up EVERY day with some obligation, and so rather than wait to quit once I was established, I think it is far smarter and better for all of us if I just bow out now.

Sorry, it seems really fun, and I may still lurk if you'll have me, but I think actually committing to something on my only night to relax would kill me :(

The stat allocation I would suggest is (going with 1, which is fairly nice)

Str 20 (Focus, plus human bonus)
 - Strength adds to both attack and damage rolls. It's what lets you do what your class is made for.
Dex 14
 - Dex adds to ranged attacks, AC, and reflex saves, but gets capped by the armor you wear.
Con 17
 - Con is for fortitude saves and hit points. HP are important for not dieing on the front lines.
Int 8
 - Humans get one additional skill point per level, the campaign gives another 2, and the class gives 4. Other party members will be able to handle int-based skills.
Wis 9
- Iffy, will saves and perception are very important.
Cha 15
- But so are order abilities. Is used for Handle Animal, which you'll probably be the only person to take.

This could be a spread for a character who got duped into committing a crime, and is now paying the ultimate price before switching loyalties.

Might consider Wisdom 15, Charisma 9, instead.

Think we're mostly just going to make sure we can use it. I know my Thursday night is iffy, too, for this week and next.

I was actually thinking if a backstory similar to the one you mentioned, so I'll build off that idea

So I need to choose between my order and animal skills and my will saves... I'm tempted to give the majority of the points to Charisma, as I like the idea of having a strong mount, but a strong mount may go to waste if I'm dangerously susceptible to mind effecting attacks and sneak attacks.

Would it be better to have weaker Charisma in exchange for better opportunities to use my skills?

I totally understand that feeling. I'll still invite you to the sessions if you have a roll20 account where you can spectate the game at your leisure should you so desire. If sometime down the road your free time opens up a bit more and you want to join, feel free to send me a PM and we can try to work something out. :-)

As for this Thursday's session, I don't plan on it going too far into the story, probably won't even have a combat. I foresee it being more of figuring out how the virtual tabletop works, setting up characters, and going through some intro stuff. I don't think it'll be a full session since I have a 14 hour road trip on Friday morning, so rest will be rather important.

Studying it a bit more, I found an alternate build option:

Str: 17
Dex: 20
Con: 14
Int: 8
Wis: 9
Cha: 15

This is for Order of the Lion.

If going with Order of the Dragon, go for Wis: 15, Cha: 9 instead for certain.

You'd be focusing on archery here, though you would certainly be capable in melee as well. Since Luring Cavalier works with Beast Rider you can double up on this >_>

Archery tends to be a lot more powerful than melee, as you're almost always going to get full attack. I think you'd have more fun long-term with archery as difficulty with getting into melee can be highly annoying.

As for wisdom versus charisma, there's a trait, eyes and ears of the city, that you can take. This would give you perception as a class skill and a +1 bonus to it, so you'll be surprised less. Focusing on dexterity/archery means you would go first more often, as well. And Luring Challenge while the monk is in the way is just cruel. >_>

As for will saves, you're not going to be facing them every session, you're not always going to be vulnerable to them when you are (protection from/magic circle against x keep the worst effects out), and 3 points less only makes it slightly more likely to fail, you're still going to succeed some of the time.

So archery would be a better option than melee? But considering that archer is ranged, why would I need a mount? I'm presuming that, if in going to emphasis on luring, I won't be doing much direct combat? I know you said they both work together, but if I'm going ranged, why would I need the skills that go into Beast Rider?

I wouldn't worry about the annoyance of "getting into" a certain play style. Trying to learn this stuff is already confusing the heck out of me. :P

Why would using Luring Challenge with a monk around be cruel?

You'd be using your mount to stay out of melee. However, if someone does actually reach you (through whatever walls of pain the party has setup), you can still have a big two-handed weapon to fall back on. You probably will be involved in melee at some points, for a variety of reasons.

Luring Challenge gives one opponent a +4 bonus to hit you (as opposed to -2 AC you apply to yourself). If other people are in the way, in order to reach you and take advantage of that they need to take a solid beating from your allies.

Archery starts pulling ahead of melee starting around 6th level. It's probably best to see this in play, but a character cannot both move and make a full attack, normally. Full attacks let you do a lot more damage, but if you're melee, you have to keep moving to reach your opponents (which may not always be possible), while a ranged character can try to hit almost anything they can see.

But if I'm going ranged, why not just be a rogue, ranger, or fighter? Wouldn't they do a better job at being an archer than a cavalier? Like, a ranger and rogue could stay out if danger using stealth or something? And wouldn't a fighter be able to dish out more damage? I mean, I'm no expert on these classes, but that's the impression I got when I read over their class descriptions...

Ohh, I see. So it's cruel for the opponent, not for the monk. :P

So then... There isn't any benefit of being a melee fighter over a ranged fighter?

Yes, luring opponents through my threatened squares makes the brawler grin with sadistic glee  >:)

With the build Veks is suggesting you would have a Str of 17, which is still very impressive.  You would have no issues standing up front if the situation called for it.

Melee can still do well, but taking full attacks is an issue as Veks said.  You have to compensate for that by using your class abilities and feats inventively.  We also generally need at least one person to stand between a big bad and the squishy casters.  I'm looking at you Latooni.

Either way I'm interested in which way you go.  I may switch around my racial bonus depending.

Melee is able to block people from getting to squishier people (like my character will be >_>). However, you would be doing okay at that anyway.

And the Luring cavalier transforms them from a stereotypical western knight into a horsebowperson. You keep your foes at a distance, taunt them and turn them into pincushions. It's not going to be any less effective, and against single targets will generally be superior.

The thing is that being a Luring Cavalier would defeat the purpose of why I wanted to be a cavalier in the first place. :/

I imagined my character charging onto the battlefield on top of a T-Rex and laying waste to her enemies while they scream in fear of her bloodied lance and steed's crimson stained jaw (I know this won't really happen given the game we're playing, but holy hell do I want to stab people while riding a T-Rex). Not shoot somebody and run away. There's no glory or awesome imagery in that. :/

But if you want me to be a luring cavalier... Well, you guys know the game better than I do, so I'll make the change. I might want to change a few things about my character though. Probably change her race to something smaller. Give her a warthog or something silly in nature for a mount. :P

Back Story- Summary
Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide
Aesa grew up in a non-pious, resentful half elf family with a history in the military.  She joined, but was soon shipped off to disappear with a unit full of essentailly evil aligned soldiers.  Instead she thrived there.  When ordered to help rescue a (lawful stupid) paladin who had foolishly gone north of the wall her unit deserted rather than waste itself in the doomed attempt.  The rescue was attempted anyway, led by a younger brother of the paladin, and met with disaster.  The younger paladin survived and hunter her down, killing one of her old companions in the process.

Back Story- Short Narrative
Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide
Ex-Sergeant Aesa Tolangarde opened her eyes with reluctance.  She must have nodded of for a moment, but it had provided a brief reprieve from her current predicament.  The rags hanging on her slim body barely fit and concealed little, but modesty wasn’t one of her top concerns even at the best of times.  The cuts and bruises were all superficial, which she supposed she could be thankful for.  Her crime was unquestioned, and her companions either dead or long gone, the inquisitors had no questions they cared to ask her.  As long as there were no bored sadists among them, she would likely be unbothered until it was time for the noose.

She closed her eyes, working the muscles in her arms to keep some blood flowing through them as she thought back on how she had arrived here.  One statement sprang forth right away, and since she was condemned anyway she felt no need to keep it silent.  “I hate paladins.”

________________________________________________________________

Aesa grew up in a military family, a pure-blood half-elf from an old, if not noble line.  The half elves were an adaptable people, but their longer lifespan changed the way they viewed history, and they remembered.  Aesa’s family still carried resentment about the lose of the old pantheon, the loss of choice of worship.  Which deity their family had once called their own had been quietly forgotten, but the simmering resentment passed down with each generation.

It was no wonder that upon joining the military, while her combat prowess was praised her blunt personality and lack of piety rubbed the more devout instructors and one particular paladin commander the wrong way.  So she was sent north to the Wall and tacked onto a unit full of insubordinates and borderline criminals.  They were based in a remote section of the wall and mostly kept out of site.  She still wasn’t sure whether the commander who assigned her there had hoped they would kill her, or whether they were actually succeeding in turning these people into a unit.

Either way the first day she arrived a scarred veteran named Kale loudly proclaimed he wouldn’t accept an “half breed whore” as part of their group and that she would only get in the way, but she was welcome to dance on the tables for them.  She had indeed gotten up on the tables, but only to reach Kale.  The two had beaten each other bloody while the rest of the unit watched and took bets.  When Aesa finally pinned him down and demanded a cut of the winnings, the whole unit burst into laughter.  The loudest sounds came from the man beneath her, which was impressive since she was pretty sure she had broken at least one of his ribs.

After that she was part of the unit, and eventually one of it’s leaders.  The relationship with the brass was always a strain.  They did the dirty work, the work no one else was willing to do.  Their reports were half truths, when they existed at all, and everyone tried to ignore them when they weren’t needed, commanders hoping they wouldn’t get complaints from the neighboring communities about theft or a despoiled maiden.  Every time a paladin rode through they knew the balanced on the edge of a discharge at best, a court martial at worst.

Still, Aesa enjoyed her time with the unit, not caring about any of their less than morale world views because the unit functioned as a whole.  Their nimble fingered “espionage expert” might happily stab a man in the back for a copper, but never would any of them break with the unit itself.  Whenever they ended up in combat she stood in the front with the other fighters and left with her hands and weapons as stained as anyone's, perhaps even more so.

They kept the peace, at least from everyone but themselves.  They essentially ruled the small neighboring communities and when they went to one of the taverns while on patrol she drank and molested the bar maids right along with them.  She never did tell them about her occasional liaison with one of the owner’s daughters, but the girl was just too sweet to share.

It all came crashing down when some damned noble paladin lead his men north of the wall.  What his goal had been she never learned, but he had bitten off more than he could chew.  Cut off from the wall, the scryers said it was only a matter of time before he was surrounded and slaughtered.  A daring rescue plan was devised, to be led by the paladins younger but equally bedazzled brother.

Aesa’s unit was ordered to “scout the left flank”.  It wasn’t a complete suicide mission, but at least a third of them wouldn’t be coming back alive.  When the unit commander objected and pointed out they would lose more men in the “rescue” than they could possibly save he was told only that Mitra would provide a path.  When the time came to enact the plan, Aesa’s unit had already scattered to the wind.

She made it south for a while, learning while she moved that the rescue had been attempted anyway, to disastrous results.  Not only had they failed the rescue, but half of the force had been caught in a bugbear ambush from the east and slaughtered.  Aesa couldn’t argue that her unit’s involvement would have reduced the blow, but she felt nothing but scorn for the fools.  Apparently the all powerful Mitra had been busy elsewhere.

The younger paladin, she would soon learn, had survived and loudly blamed the deserters for the death of his brother and pledged to hunt them down.  That is why she was here, why she and Kale had met up on that rainy day, why she had watched his cursed glowing mace crush Kale’s skull.  The holy energy the paladin had unleashed on her had burned through her body and knocked her back.  Proof, he declared as he watched his men surround her to finish the job.  Proof of her vile nature.  The last thing she remembered before blacking out was his smile.

____________________________________________________________________

Aesa opened her eyes in the darkness.  Her arms were sore beyond belief, but her muscles were still warm and fully functional.  She wasn’t dead yet.  A savage smile graced her lips as she muttered.  “Sanctimonious bastard, you should have killed me when you had the chance.  I'm going to rip your beating heart out of your chest, and you'll last just long enough to watch it stop beating in my hand.”

Question for Loki, will we be using character sheets on the D20 site, or managing them ourselves?

Just one archetype.  The Archetypes are essentially customization options, they replace some of your class abilities with others so that you can have what you want without a bunch of extras.  If you're going through them, I suggest just reading the description and decide if that sounds right for your character.  That's what I do, and I know most of the feats already  :P

Emissary (Archetype)

Cavaliers serve many roles on the battlefield, from bold leaders and shock troops to dashing knights and mounted juggernauts. Some cavaliers, however, focus more on speed and mobility than they do on the raw power of the mounted charge. On foot or in the saddle, the emissary is usually first to meet the enemy, with a pointed lance, a drawn sword, or terms for surrender.

Emissary gives you better speed, but you sacrifice heavy armour (screw you auto correct, I'm Canadian and armour has a u in it) and the Tactician ability.

Tactician could actually be rather twisted too.  You give us both teamwork, I pick up some other specific combat feats, we surround something, and it becomes a fine red mist.

The main thing is, go with what you understand and what you think you'll enjoy, don't worry about making a perfect character.  It can be a lot of fun to figure out the best builds, but we're often talking about the difference between an olympic gold medalist and an olympic 4th place.  Yeah they may not get the gold, but they still run a hell of a lot faster than almost everyone.  Not taking a certain archetype isn't going to take your character from awesome to useless, especially with your stats.  If in doubt, the standard class is standard for a reason, it won't let you down.

You can take multiple archetypes so long as they replace different abilities. In most cases, they'll conflict, but Beast Rider and Emissary do not.

May want to just stick with beast rider for now. Using downtime rules, you can train into/out of archetypes (though it takes a long while).

First session will probably go over a few basics of what those feats do and such. : )

Urp, I'm really sorry to do this too, but I won't be able to attend. One of my IRL campaigns got switched to Thursday night, so things have become super awkward.

Booo : (

Would you be willing to pm me your schedule otherwise?

Jeez, keeping track of feats and such is harder than I thought.  :-\

I wouldn't worry about it, the most meticulous part of D&D is character sheet building; once that is done things become a lot more streamlined and there is a lot less you need to keep track of or dig for.

Just one archetype.

Speaking of this, I need to get my sheet in before we start tomorrow. I've been so busy studying for tests and Pathfinder that I've been neglecting my character sheet!

I should probably also make an account on the website that'll be hosting the game too...

It's not something that comes up often, but it looks like the cavalier archetypes were built for combos, as opposed to most other classes.

For your feats: Mounted Combat lets you make ride checks to protect your mount once per round when they are attacked. Power Attack lets you reduce your to-hit bonus in exchange for doing increased damage. They are two very important feats for you.

For your bonus teamwork feat: Precise strike

http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/ultimateCampaign/characterBackground/traits.html

You get to pick one additional trait (in addition to your crime), and optionally you can take a second trait from this list if you pick a drawback.

I highly recommend grabbing Eyes and Ears of the City (Lawful Neutral, great if you were a sentinel of some sort) or Seeker so you can get Perception as a class skill.

You have six skill points. You can only put one point into a skill at level one, so you are basically choosing six things to be good at.

Bluff (Cha)
Climb (Str)
Craft (Int)
Diplomacy (Cha)
Handle Animal (Cha)
Intimidate (Cha)
Profession (Wis)
Ride (Dex)
Sense Motive (Wis)
Swim (Str)

Are your default class skills.

Order of the Lion adds  Knowledge (local) (Int) and Knowledge (nobility) (Int)

If you take Seeker or Eyes and Ears of the City as a trait, you get Perception (Wis) as well.

Perception and Ride are your 'must have' skills. Should put a point into each. Perception helps prevent being surprised, Ride is what you're going to be doing a lot >_> Plus it helps protect your mount.

Intimidate, Diplomacy, Handle Animal, and Bluff all benefit from your higher charisma score. You'll get a lot of use out of Diplomacy and Intimidate both. Later on you can do mass intimidate checks with your mount using a feat, so it could go pretty much as you described >_>

Climb and Swim benefit from your strength, these tend to see a lot of use at low levels in my experience.

Profession and Craft are group skills, so you could pick Profession (Soldier), and it would be a single skill. For you, these would probably be more flavor oriented. I tend to wait a few levels to pick up rp-purposed skills, personally. Knowledge (local and nobility) are somewhat similar in this regard.

Sense Motive checks if people are telling the truth.

My suggestion would be to pick Ride, Perception, Diplomacy, Intimidate, Swim and Climb. But it'd be no problem to swap out any or all of the last four.

How earlier? 8pm is fine for me, but any earlier than that and I may miss the beginning of the campaign.

So we get two traits at the start of the game, or three with one drawback... And there are no restrictions or prerequisites to traits, right? Unless specifically noted?

As for my crime, I'm thinking of either Attempted Murder or Dueling Unto Death. If I choose the latter, would that Fortitude point be shared with my mount?

Do I even need Handle Animal if I''m going to be a Beast Rider? Doesn't Beast Rider already make my mounts combat trained? Or do I still need to teach it how to attack and stuff regardless?

Your crime is one of your traits, so it's basically crime+1, or crime+drawback+2. I picked Hedonist for a drawback, naturally >_>

And no. We'll go over your mount when you can actually get one back (since we start imprisoned with nothing). It will be able to get its own perks, though, because of your Beast Rider archetype.

Mechanically the most useful to you would be one that boosts your will save (High treason). Your intimidate is already going to start pretty high, and later on will likely be ridiculous. On the other hand, Fort and Will saving throws stop Nasty Stuff.

Possibly.

Keriath's house is sworn to Sworn to Duke Geriant of House Rissoran. Keriath's house only contains himself, his father and grandfather, so not really relevant for your character. Haven't detailed much of that duke yet. Feel free to make things up about him.

The Duchy Keriath has been romping around in with Meliai's oracle is primarily elven, so not really relevant for your character.

Some background details for Keriath:

House Vannerolm

Over nine centuries before Keriath was born, the great paladin Amorant won the favor of a beautiful angel - a peri known as Nehulessi. Their only son, Celon, followed in his parent's footsteps, and grew to untold heights of power - eventually slaying Amrigophales, a Duke of Hell who had managed to find a path to true immortality. This impossible act he secured with his own line - so long as his sons lived, the great Duke would remain slain. For his own heroic deeds in Talingarde itself, he was granted a barony and the right accorded a noble house: Vannerolm. Sworn to the Duchy of Soravet, now held by Duke Geriant of House Rissoran, this house has been on the brink of extinction for nearly a millennia.

Asmodeus himself laid his curse on the man - none of his line would ever sire more than one child - unless they turned irrevocably to evil. After five of his six sons each sired daughters, he sought a blessing from Mitra himself. Any such single sons would thensforth sire only sons.

A great many forces sought to break the curse, as few powers good or evil desired to see the Duke return. At least three succubi bore sons for the line. Despite this heritage, the children remained true to the virtues of their fathers. Each son was raised a paladin, as his father before him, creating a most ancient and lonesome order, keeping the peace over the Castle Vannerolm and its barony.

After centuries of loyal service, House Rissoran forgot about the fell curse laid upon their servant, and House Vannerolm was eventually granted possession of the barony of Sophsfell, along with oversight of the three nearby towns. Now counts, this increased their prestige significantly.

Direct Possessions:
- The Barony of Vannerolm her castle (capital of the County of Sophiret)
- The Barony of Sophsfell and her castle
- Right of corvee and taxation from the towns of Sophiret, Vasserel, and Dovreight.
- Right of same from the villages and hamlets within the county borders.

Recent Members: The house consists of three widely known members. Until Keriath, all are Emberkin (Peri-blooded Aasimar) with the Deathless Spirit and Scion of Humanity traits, and all are Paladins.
- Keriath (known to a few). Known to a few scholars who pieced it together during or before his trial, as well as his father. Keriath saw Dhaevon at the trial, but amongst all those there, it did not register. Keriath's trial was attended by a veritable army of those whose family members he had slain or ravaged.
- Dhaevon, Keriath's father. A deeply troubled man in his early thirties who has long been in search of his fell son. He was present at the trial, and though he feels deep regret for the damage his son had wrought, he is glad that the curse is finally over. He is currently working to adopt some of Keriath's oldest sons. He knows better than to even try to find them all. He is far from the only one looking to do so, however.
- Amorant VII, Dhaevon's father (deceased). Perished when the erinyes Zen attacked the castle to ravage his son.
- Ghavris, Dhaevon's grandfather. Currently the acting count after his father stepped down. Was away when the erinyes attacked.
- Teleron, Ghavris' father. A great hero in the Darian war for succession and the battles Markadian the First led later. Maimed during Zen's attack, he abdicated rule of the county to his son. Over a century old, infirm and crippled, death will soon take him.
- Celon XI, Teleron's father (deceased). A hero alongside his son, died at the Battle of Tamberlyn.

Keriath's Background

Fed up with the plodding seduction attempts of succubi who were content to simply try again every century or three, Zen - a powerful erinyes - decided to take Dhaevon by force, and ravaged him.

The child of this unholy union, she named Keriath.

She endured raising the boy personally for nearly two years - instilling discipline into him as only a devil can. After that, she passed him between a chain of diabolists to engage his magical instruction, preventing him from getting attached to any one. All females with a highly patriarchal outlook, Keriath was used to being in a position of authority from a young age.

As he entered puberty, Zen ensured that his instructors were nubile and alluring, only barely holding his lust in check. She was about to lose what little patience she had with the boy until one of his prior instructors presented her a newborn son, appearing almost human save for a prominent tail.

She took Keriath - now a man - to a remote village, which she had been preparing for some years with a series of tragic accidents. The few men that remained in the village had little to show for themselves, and the women were quite eager when the half-fiend arrived.

He did better than Zen could possibly have dreamed. When the first children were born, the lords of the ruling house were furious - and cuckolded - but there was little they could do as Keriath had long since moved on, and the girls were in fact willing.

(Remainder of background is still being written with Meliai. Altered the remainder significantly. >_>)

Keriath's Journal

Note: Keriath's journal is written from the perspective that he expects some do-gooder to eventually find and read it. He considers outright lying a last resort, but he will tend to gloss over important details where they might compromise his goals. He may sometimes imply things that aren't true or severely understate things that are.

Day 1

My dear little slave was sounding so happy. Poor thing. Oh to watch the hope fade from her eyes. I am certain it would have broken a lesser heart.

After our grand trial, we had a lovely trip to Brandescar. I assume it must have been lovely because they did not dare take my hood off from the moment the trial ended. I was allowed to drink water through straw, at least. My pet was all too happy to describe the scenery for me. Of course, her voice could make a pigsty sound immaculate.

Sergeant Blackerly laughed at her cry when he branded her. Before I leave, I am going to brand each of his stones along with his manhood, and stuff their crushed, burnt remains down his throat. I doubt that my dear slave will appreciate the gesture, but I will not tolerate disrespect to my most valuable property.

He needed to reheat the iron twice to get my brand to take. The hood permitted me to keep a bemused look on my face as he cursed my mother. I understand that she is not the most gentle of women, but he has no right to call her that.

He is going to wish I killed him. I know he has no reward awaiting him in the afterlife, but I feel it important to make sure his life in this world is thoroughly destroyed, first.

Besides my fellow cellmates, I caught neither whiff nor sound of another female in the entire prison on my way in, nor any of the guards talking about any female except for Thog. Such esteemed company we are in. I was not expecting her to look anywhere near as pleasant as she does, as such creatures go. Given her sobriquet, I imagine she will be dining well shortly.

The guards openly taunted me about the visage I was missing as they locked me in. I told them I could smell my new friends just fine and that seemed to disturb them enough to shut them up.

If you are some would-be hero looking for clues as to where we might be off too, yes, Tomas seriously let me see a guest and actually allowed us privacy while my hood was off and arms unbound. She had him wrapped around her finger so tight I was worried she would need to amputate it. He didn't even get to touch her for it, much less... Anyway, his own soldiers aren't exactly blind to how incompetent he is, either.

And yes... freedom. If you think being manacled and fettered is uncomfortable, you should grow a pair of tails and have the lovely ladies who finally captured us bind them to your waist. Once they figured it out - after a few weeks of very little dignity - they did a very good job, in more than a few ways. The wizardess spent most of the time researching a counter to the grease spell just so they could have the... grip to pull my tails fully taut. It took all six of them, plus some volunteers.

When I get my clothes back from the sorceress - and check up on my sons if they are born yet - I am going to have to thank them for minding my bone structure when they bound my tails. They ached... oh did they ever ache, but a straight wind around would have been excruciating. The ladies must have made it rather clear how hard they were to bind, because no one dared take the bindings off since, even for the trial.

Just the feeling of them being free was enough to distract me from the... nature and state of my new companions. Important, I think, that we get someplace safe.

Now for the guards. I might ask, what would you do, if you had four beautiful women and a man in a cell, all securely bound, and the man able to hear but not see?

I know what I would do. My slave knows too. I am curious how disciplined these guards are.

What better way for a man to get himself killed than to damn himself by his thoughts and goals in the process? Exquisite, I would say.

I am going to be late if not entirely absent tonight, because of dumb last minute work bullshit. I've been stuck late every day this week, and today isn't going any better. I'll get on as soon as I get home, but I'm not sure exactly when that will be and I might be a bit of a zombie.

I'm not sure if Loki just ignores characters if their player is absent or treats them as an NPC, but I will pop on roll20 and double check that her sheet there is all in line in case someone needs to roll things for me. Lisette still has one first level spell slot yet which she's been saving for emergency healing

IC thread can be found here: https://elliquiy.com/forums/index.php?topic=217304.msg10680121#msg10680121

I'll update the first post with characters, key NPCs, and a table of contents for the various stretches of downtime that we come across.  If you have one-on-one naughty time threads you wish to link to the table of contents, I could make a place for that too.  Gotta keep the exhibitionists and voyeurs happy after all.  ;)

Also, if you don't mind providing a profile pic with each of your posts to make it easier to track which characters are posting, that would be fantastic.

As a point of clarification, spellbook and formulae books fall under the umbrella of starting gear that you would have gotten at the morning of your first day. Anything withing your class's starting kit from the SRD as well as any class items that is listed as being provided with the class fall under this category. The 200gp could be anything else you want.

Ooh, good to know.

I'll be getting my shopping list sorted out (and presumably the roll20 sheet transcribed into a spoiler tag in this thread? if that's desirable/necessary/whatnot?) hopefully in the near future (which is to say, am in the process of doing so).

Addendum: Does that include spells-known-at-level 1, for... I believe Keriath and myself are the only ones dependent on an item for that?

Yup, you get your starting items, which includes the starting spells/formulae as though you generated it upon first creating your character.

Hello everybody, just wanted to check in now that I'm on my way home from vacation. Was there anything you were wanting from me for guiding the IC thread or should I just allow it to continue to be a casual post as you all get a chance sandbox deal? As for the next session, this upcoming Thursday won't woek for me due to Thanksgiving, but I'm open to ideas for an alternative date until we can resume our former routine next week.

http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/ultimateEquipment/gear/adventuringGear.html

See 'Cavalier's Kit':

A riding saddle, saddlebags, bit & bridle, etc. are all part of what you get for free.

A Masterwork backpack (50 gp) is a pretty good investment with your high strength.

Derp, it would probably help if I got my dates right, huh? Correction: Next week's session isn't cancelled, the one that would fall on the 25th is. That said, we can try to have a rescheduled game sometime around the holiday should people be able and interested.

As an important note, sometime after tomorrow's session I plan on switching roll20's character sheet template from what it currently is to its simplified counterpart that looks vastly easier to use and read. The problem is that it seems none of the data in the sheets will transfer over (your token and whatnot will be unaffected), so I want to give you time to copy your character sheet info elsewhere to save it during the transition. The simpler sheet more closely resembles your standard d&d character sheet, so updating it will be a lot easier.

I'm having the same issue. I've got a take home mid-term on my plate that consists of three essays revolving around subjects which I'm less than familiar. Already sunk seven hours into it and I'm still on my first essay.

I feel really bad doing this, since it's less than an hour from the game, but I feel it would be best for me to take a break tonight as well... I have a lot of work to do and I don't think staying up until midnight would be a good idea for me.

Hey guys, sorry about last week. Medical issues arose and has largely taken up all my time not at work or asleep. There's nothing to worry about, things are well in hand, but requires frequent attention all the same. Between that and the countless projects/responsibilities that are on the horizon now that winter is ending, I'm not sure if I will be able to maintain a reliable block of time to run this campaign for all of you.  I'm looking for group preferences here since what we do impacts the group. If we want to try to press on with the game, I feel that it is only fair that I warn you that I may not have the time or energy to run it on any sort of reliable routine. Especially in the upcoming several weeks where yardwork/housework, vacations, and other such life obligations are going to be a priority very soon.

It is looking like I won't be able to host tomorrow's session either due to events from last week. I am sorry for any inconvenience, I'm not a fan of being unreliable, which is why I am torn with what option to take in regards to this campaign. :/
