Granted in the beginning it was terrifying. And some people are still extremely nervous. But... life goes on, people adapt, some live in civil war areas...

On a happier topic, Eurovision.
It used to be a BIG DEAL in huge letters ;) People who couldn't Watch, would tape it. Nowadays? It's mostly a certain type of population who watches, without meaning to sound elitist. I will listen to the winner - maybe. Not in this case. I don't understand how this appeal to people, from the extracts I was subjected to. The message is sound, I guess, but was already a thing for the Spice Girls. It's not the first time a winning song is odd, or "fun", so maybe that's what people are wanting.

That one was from a made up language, because Belgium couldn't choose between French and Flemish

That one barely made any sense, just very pop and upbeat

I love this topic, it's giving me what to think about. On a planet that likes this, I see why Netta won. I guess the recipe is an odd look, consensual or nonsensical lyrics, and energy. France gave 12 points, and honestly I don't understand.

People have been worrying about the next generation since Aristotle. We made it this far, so we're probably good.

I have always loved that quote.  ;D

They [Young People] have exalted notions, because they have not been humbled by life or learned its necessary limitations; moreover, their hopeful disposition makes them think themselves equal to great things -- and that means having exalted notions. They would always rather do noble deeds than useful ones: Their lives are regulated more by moral feeling than by reasoning -- all their mistakes are in the direction of doing things excessively and vehemently. They overdo everything -- they love too much, hate too much, and the same with everything else.

A Swedish audionomic research study shows that contrary to widespread fears, exposure to rock music and loud movies has not damaged the hearing of the baby-boomer generation. The hearing of a wide sample of Swedes born in the mid-1940s was tested and actually proved to be considerably better than in earlier studies of people born in 1901, 1906 and 1922 who were tested at the same age. :D

http://www.gp.se/nyheter/sverige/rocken-skadade-inte-40-talisterna-1.6010840 (in Swedish)

Of course this is not 100% conclusive, since some of those who were the most heavily exposed to loud concerts or played in loud bands themselves will have died well before they turned seventy, due to drug abuse, drug/drink-related illnesses and AIDS, and also because general health is better now than during the working lives of those who were born just after 1900. Still it's an interesting result! :)

I'm thinking maybe an occasional concert isn't as bad as constant walkman, discman and iPod?

OT: I can't find an article in English, but a mémorial for the Armenian genocide has been attacked by Turkish people in France and defaced. So useless... It was high time it was recognized as a genocide, too.

"The Armenian genocide was the ruthless slaughter of millions of Armenians by the Turks of the Ottoman Empire. In 1915, during World War I, leaders of the Turkish government set in motion a plan to expel and massacre Armenians. By the early 1920s, when the massacres and deportations finally ended, between 600,000 and 1.5 million Armenians were dead, with many more forcibly removed from the country. Today, most historians call this event a genocide: a premeditated and systematic campaign to exterminate an entire people. However, the Turkish government still does not acknowledge the enormity or scope of these events."

Many nations recognize it, but many don't for fear of backlash from Turkey. April 24 was the anniversary.

If I were a North Korean leader, I would never trust the US, especially one led by the Trump. As long as China trades with North Korea and supports them, they hardly need the US. Nukes are the great equalizer.

Technically, as far as the Koreans are concerned, the first one never ended.  The Panmunjom declaration signed this year even admits that.

(Section 2, subsection 1)
Quote
South and North Korea agreed to completely cease all hostile acts against each other in every domain, including land, air and sea, that are the source of military tension and conflict. In this vein, the two sides agreed to transform the demilitarized zone into a peace zone in a genuine sense by ceasing as of May 1 this year all hostile acts and eliminating their means, including broadcasting through loudspeakers and distribution of leaflets, in the areas along the Military Demarcation Line.

QuoteIn a monumental decision that will resonate through election season, the U.S. Senate on Wednesday voted 52-47 to reinstate the net neutrality protections the Federal Communications Commission decided to repeal last December.

QuoteUnder the CRA, only a simple majority is needed to pass legislation. With Republican Senator John McCain currently hospitalized and all Democrats on board, only a single Republican needed to vote in favor of restoring net neutrality rules. However, Senators Susan Collins, Joe Kennedy, and Lisa Murkowski all broke from their GOP colleagues and ensured that the resolution passed.

gah forgot to add, and can't edit. This doesn't mean net neutrality is completely saved. It still has to work through House of representatives. But still a victory.

QuoteNow that the resolution has passed the Senate, it will go to the House of Representatives, where it overrides a similar resolution introduced in the lower chamber last month. There, it will face a new and more strenuous challenge.

“There’s no mechanism for expediting a vote in the House,” Allie Bohm, policy council at Public Knowledge, explains. “While Senate Democrats were able to push the resolution out of committee with a minority of members signing Markey’s petition, House rules require a majority to do the same: 218 votes.”

In other words, assuming every Democrat is on board, they will still need 25 Republicans before a vote can even be called.

Saw that one too last night. It's an interesting story, and the headline that "Stan Lee Sues POW! Entertainment for 1 Billion Dollars" over facegrabbing - as another news source put it - had me giggling at once. Very funny headline, not least the name of the company (founded by Lee himself).  :P

Facegrabbing is when they use someone's likeness without permission correct?

Yes. Stan Lee says POW! took control of his social media accounts and poured out facebook and instagram updates and tweets in his name, no doubt using some photos of him in the process. A profile photo, if nothing else.

Getting a POW! right between the eyes sounds...entertaining. :D

Wasn't Lee just recently denying accusations that his caregivers were taking advantage of his old age to abuse him? But now someone else is taking advantage of his age to trick him in a business deal?
