Well, it looks like that Theresa May's pact with the DUP may not actually be happening: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/theresa-may-democratic-unionist-party-pact-coalition-confidence-and-supply-deal-agreement-gavin-a7784136.html

It was a pretty desperate power grab to begin with. But even if she were to miraculously pull it off, I don't think it would be anything to worry about, as the alliance is very unstable...

Apparently there were many Anti Sharia Law protests being put out recently.

In other news (since no news channel seems to be covering it) the Puerto Rico vote seems to be heading in favour of Statehood. The PPD (Independence party) has gone out to claim the result was rigged, despite telling people not to go out and vote today......

Wouldn't you want people to go out and vote for your side instead of staying home?

George Osborne dubbed her a "dead woman walking" and said her new government might come tumbling down with her within a few days. Perhaps the soundbite of the weekend.

It's the kind of remark that could be taken as a thread or an incitement to violence should anyone make an attempt on her life.

Indeed! I don't know if it will happen that quickly, but it certainly can't be ruled out at some point in the near future (certainly before 2020!)  :D

Probably not; I think it's most likely to be a metaphor for her chances at remaining the PM of the U.K. But even if she does remain, there is no doubt that her party has been crippled.

The Results are in. Puerto Rico has voted by majority for Statehood.

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/puerto-rican-voters-back-statehood-in-questioned-referendum/ar-BBCv8xW?OCID=ansmsnnews11

I am both excited but now worried to see how this goes.

In all likelihood though, Trump/Congress will figure out a way to prevent it :(

I'm excited to see how that'll turn out. Puerto Rico becoming a state is really long overdue. Though the voter turnout was pretty low for that. Ouch. >_>

Doesn't Puerto Rico tend to lean Republican/Conservative in terms of voting? The GOP-dominated Congress might actually want a 51st state if it means their caucus gets stronger.

From what I saw on WAPA (Puerto rican news channel) a lot of people stayed behind not to vote in protest. The Independence party even told people to stay home. They sabotaged their own chances :P

Yeah, not voting as a protest doesn't make sense to me. I'd have thought that the opposition would have wanted to light a fire under their supporters' butts to get them to the polls. >_>

Not voting as a protest, or voting invalidly, has its uses. A Hungarian referendum showed 92% yes, 8% no, but was invalid because the turnout was insufficient. Had more people voted no, its unlikely they would have changed the majority vote to no, but they could have ensured a sufficient turnout to make the referendum valid.

Even with Trump in office, Militias are uneasy.

*conflicting feelings on this* I am always happy to see those who would risk al if our freedoms ever did become at risk of oppression. But at the same time too many of them are extremists in their own right.

Not really, remember that May fired Osborne last year. So this is just his way of sticking the proverbial boot in when he got the chance, the paper he's the editor of ran with the front page headline "Queen of Denial."

The EU Commission has repeated urged Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary to start taking in refugees as part of the EU refugee relocation program:

https://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2017/06/13/world/europe/ap-eu-europe-migrants.html?_r=0

Today, it has been confirmed: the EU will be launching legal action against us. Meanwhile, our Foreign Affairs Minister keeps saying that such an action is "nothing to be worried about".  ::)

Also, our Minister of Interior, in a very recent interview, compared the Polish government's refusal to take the refugees in to the military actions of Early Medieval ruler of Franks, Charles Martel, who "stopped the Muslim storm". He also ridiculed various social initiatives of West European countries to integrate the Middle-Eastern immigrants by having them take part in community activities. According to the Minister, there is one good plan to make the immigrants integrate and it is called 'Christianity'.  :o

So how long until Polexit?

It's a question that *is* actually being asked around here by the more pro-EU people. Considering that the current government has been in a major pissing contest with the EU for most of its term...

Also, in a recent speech at the Parliament, our Prime Minister made comments relating the Ariana Grande terrorist attack. In hysteria-laden voice, she kept yelling that taking the refugees in is "the madness of the Brussels elite" and that Europe should "get up of the knees" (a phrase PiS loves - they say their political program is about "Poland getting up from its knees"), or else it shall "keep crying for its children". After that speech, some of our commentators said that the PM moved into the political zone of Marie LePen...

Aside from the Polexit issue, I am really infuriated by the Interior Minister's "Christianity" comment. The only way to integrate Muslim is to have them convert to Christianity? How bigoted you need to be to say something like that?

I wonder what our own Muslim population (which has existed here since the late Middle Ages) thinks about it...

The cabinet of Finland enters a major crisis after the right-wing coalition partner, the True Finns, had elected a new party leader. He came in by a kind of revolt from beneath in the party, and already before he had been chosen he was known to use a stingier, more crude and hectoring rethoric about the EU and issues of migration (=muslims and Russians) than had ben heard before in the party. Now, the True Finns are a loudly nationalist and anti-immigration party to begin with, but they had used some polish and reason before - with the new leader Jussi Halla-Aho, that went off. Last week the former party leader was expelled, and these last few days there's been a big-time rupture within the TF. Culminating today, when the entire band of TF ministers announced that they were leaving the party and setting up a rival faction - but after a few hours of uncertainty, decided to stay in the government anyway. So now there's suddenly a new party in the Finnish parliament and it's in governent too, though from the angle of their old party leadership, they are all traitors and political wildmen.  :D

The response from many of the common voters of TF (one of the leading parties in Finland) is going to be furious.

Yep, when those big apartment blocks are carelessly constructed or haven't had any serious upkeep they can turn into real death traps when a fire breaks out. Plastic coating and plattering for exmple, it can spread the fire and at the same time create huge amounts of thick, hot, poisonous smoke.

I was talking to Dasha this morning, she lives close enough to the building to have seen the plumes of smoke  in the distance and the helicopters from her own windows. Shocking to see the fire rapidly take over a near 30-floor modern tower, she thought, and I agree.  :-(
