Knowing that 'Mazel tov' essentially means 'Good luck', and remembering the tradition of crushing a glass at weddings gives me the oddest images...

This isn't something you'd want to happen in the traffic of any town: Huge, eight metres wide sinkhole opens in a downtown street crossing in Japan. The hole has now grown to about thirty metres (~ a hundred feet) square and fifteen metres deep.

I think that wouldn't even occur during a fairly strong (like Richter 6) earthquake. The good news is, it didn't strike completely out of the blue, there were two smaller sinkholes on the spot for a  little while before, and the opening-up happened early in the morning, so I guess most people and cars were avoiding the intersection soon enough.

People living nearby are on social media, joking about the species of monsters that might come crawling up from the big unknown.

Sinkholes generally aren't associated with earthquakes in particular.  What causes them is the collapse of underground caves, typically created as a result of ground water leaching away minerals.  Limestone and gypsum are very susceptible to this.

Oh yes, that. I remember. A few of my FB contacts posted that it's assault, others posted that it's simply something deserving of a slap in the face and that it was worse to tell the girl that her refusal to press charges was wrong. It was such a mess. The guy is seriously insane for behaving that way, whatever it is. Did I mention I hate French TV? Apart from Plus belle la vie *ducks*

When it comes to movies I see a trumpian future more as Escape From New York than Mad Max.

Imagine the government starting to round up all the illegal immigrants. They are put in a giant internment camp. Maybe Detroit leases its most run-down neighborhoods to the federal government for some extra income? A giant wall is build around it, hundreds of thousands of people are hearded into the area.

And then the government runs out of money.

Tax breaks for the rich, giant cost overruns for the border wall, and a trade war with China all combine to ruin the US and all those people are left in the ghetto without supplies, surrounded by guards drawn from crazy right-wing militias who won't hesitate to shoot to kill.

For an extra kick add Trump's sons occasionaly visiting the ghetto for "hunting trips" and you have the perfect dystopia.

Yeah, the homegrown racists and xenophobes here in Sweden are jubilant too, even if it's more unofficially, on social media and such. They've been praising Trump all along as a real man and a no-nonsense dealmaker and anti-wimps man. 

Haven't seen yet if the leader of our resident anti-immigration, far.right nationalist party has sent his congratulations yet, but I figure he will.

Well, whatever you make of Trump's victory, at least let it serve as a reminder to us Europeans that we are not quite at that point yet - but could be one day. While I have voed in every federal election in the last 30 years, I have not been so consistent in state and local elections. That's gonna change. From now on I will vote whenever I can, to do my part to ensure we don't end up in our own version of Trumpland.

I watched the speech last night and while it might have been filled with words that should have been reassuring the whole thing left me with that greasy feeling you get when exposed to a putrefying miasma.  Asked for a one-word review of it my response would be hypocrisy.
