The only way that these problems will be solved is if we learn from our mistakes and from each other.  It is important to talk about them - not knee-jerk into immediate defensiveness.

Yes, there are good cops.  But what are we going to do to weed out the bad ones?  It's the bad ones that put a tarnish on all badges, and yet with every incident of police brutality (and there is no denying that the Sandra Bland case was just that) there is a compulsion to point out that there are good ones.  Of course there are good ones.  People don't change their fundamental nature just by putting on a uniform.  Likewise, there are good soldiers and good lawyers, and good politicians.

We need to acknowledge and deal with the bad ones.  Shine the spotlight on them until they wither, instead of leaping to the comforting fact that there are good ones, and letting the bad ones slink off into the shadows once again.

Which will necessitate doing something about the culture-of-silence mentioned upthread regards cops policing (no pun intended) their own instead of shielding their crimes from the outside world.

Never said it would be easy - worthwhile changes typically aren't.

This is one of reasons why I hardly pay attention to news on TV.

News is center piece of representing all the bad of the world. ;\

Stories like these http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2015/07/23/historic-shipwreck-lake-michigan/30558843/ peeks my interest, but those I have to weave through with all the other nonsensical on goings of humanity.

Its a bit more complicated than that. The Ferguson report found racism was method of operation for the police force, and Civil Forfeiture is also widespread enough that it cannot be dismissed as a couple of jackass cops. Cops serve a vital function in any civilized country, but if people think the only reason people mistrust or dislike them is a few bad apples spoiling the whole barrel, they need to re-examine the situation.

oh I was talking about our conversation here.

A news piece I just read and that made me curse:

Recently, Polish parliament passed a bill regarding regulations regarding the in-vitro fertilization. The bill is relatively liberal.

Now, the conservative opposition (including the Law and Justice party that will, most probably, take power after the autumn elections) protests. And lo and behold, one Law and Justice senator declared that the bill would be modified! With, I quote, "cooperation with the Catholic Church's Episcopate".

Could somebody please remind these people that the Catholic Church is not a part of the government??? And that non-Catholics live in this country, too???

*bangs head against the wall*

So, our right-wing party over here in Australia has been trumpeting that old "Border security, stop refugees and immigrants getting into the country" tune. Fair enough, it's what they do.

But now our left-wing party has decided to join them and have the same policy. (Source)

Democracy is frustrating when both major parties are giving you the same options.

Gunman opens fire in a movie theatre in Louisiana.

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/multiple-injuries-reported-in-shooting-at-louisiana-movie-theater-newspaper/ar-AAdpfis

It looks to me like this shooter is trying to copycat the other asshole who did the same thing.

Fuck it, here come the usual gun arguments. *throws up arms* I don't care anymore.

God what I would give for just once someone with their own gun to kill one of those fuckers..practically sell my damn soul for it to happen just once at least.

The gunman was one of those who died during the event (source). However I'm not sure whether he was shot by himself, the police or an armed bystander. There's not a lot of information released yet but there's 3 Dead, including the gunman and 7 injured.

So two innocent people are dead, and what has you up in arms is that now people will question gun laws? That seems like misplaced priority. If you believe that gun laws are fine as they are, well I disagree with you but you are entitled to that opinion. What you are not entitled to though is to never see that stance questioned, especially when 2 people died because of it.

But don't worry, after the Shady Hook massacre's body count of 26 (20 being children) failed to bring about any significant change in gunlaw, people pretty much gave up. It will still be debated on the internet, because its what people do, but nothing is likely to change.

Using emotionally charged events like this shooting to promote anti-gun sentiment/legislation seems kind of manipulative to me. The argument effectively becomes "if you support the right to bear arms, then you support this horrendous act"  which is just plain wrong.

It's not the weapon that causes death, it's the asshole who's pulling the trigger and that asshole will simply switch to some other instrument of destruction if a gun is not obtainable legally or illegally. Sure, we can make things like Clorox, razor blades, kitchen knives and pipes illegal too, but I don't think that would work very well either.

Just a suggestion but best we not turn this thread into an argument about gun ownership. These issues were already gone into in the Charleston Shooting thread or could certainly be worth a thread of their own.

I'm not going to addressing the arguments they made, I already have in the other thread, I will just clarify. I am not saying "if you support the right to bear arms, then you support this horrendous act". I am saying that if you immediately jump from "2 innocent people dead" to "oh crap, now I'm going to have to hear gun control advocates" then your priorities as a person suck.

You took the words right out of my mouth, Caeh.

Can we please, please, please-with-extra-double-sugar-on-top, not get into this here again?

The repetition of the same arguments and points of view over and over again sometimes tempts me to ignore this thread and I would rather not, because there are interesting stories and events shared here that I would miss out on if I stopped paying attention.

Rockin' for Kim, the Dear Leader

"Like many Chinese hotels, the Kunlun International hotel has rock bottom prices. It also boasts rooms with round beds and dance poles, and an all-female North Korean rock band who belt out "Anthem of the Worker's Party" and other socialist classics every night.

Young and good-looking, the seven-piece group bear a striking similarity to the Moranbong band, a North Korean musical phenomenon who have been accorded huge success since their members were hand-selected by leader Kim Jong-Un.

(---)

South Korea's pop culture has given Seoul a soft power push in recent years, and singer Psy's 2012 hit Gangnam Style became a worldwide phenomenon.

The Moranbong band have not had a similar global impact. But inside North Korea, streets reportedly empty during their concerts and students can sing their repertoire at the drop of a hat.

All women, they are radically different from previous musical offerings, with fast tempos and disco stylings."

*prowls Youtube for live clips of the original band*  :P

I remember when he used to tell kids to 'train, say your prayers, take your vitamins, and believe in yourself'.  So - at one point there was an appeal.  Frankly, he should have been out of the business a long time ago.

The 2016 has had one good thing come out of it so far.  Berkeley Breathed has come out of comics-retirement and started doing new Bloom County strips.  He has said that Trump's entry into the race 'may or may not' have had anything to do with it.
