Pssst.  Looks like the Texans aluminum hat crowd fell for it.  We'll have em all rounded up and the State will be ours by sunrise!

;D

Edit: Apologies to those offended by the original language used above.  I had intended to poke fun at the Extreme Right's overreaction and the Governor calling up the state troops to "shadow" the U.S. Army.  But the brush I used was too broad.  Not all Texans, of course, are part of the Extreme Right.

Haha.  You wonder if they might be less worried, if they weren't always talking about how to ignore/leave/change the federal government themselves.

After two years, Mark Weiner is free. The system is still broken.

Perhaps more amusing than some subjects here...

Linguists develop maps of which Twittering American regions use what cuss words more.

And here I had no idea the bitch talk was sooo southeasterly while assholes got noted more in the Northeast.

And "gosh" qualifies as a cuss word?  Okieee...   :o

It's what they call a 'minced oath' - used in place of something that the speaker considers inappropriate (usually 'God' in this case.)  Another example would be when you hear your Grandpa say 'Judas priest!'  They aren't showing you how metal they are - they just don't want Grandma to hear them saying 'Jesus Christ!'

Ha! And that's where the metal band's name originated from?

Possibly if you trace things back far enough, but apparently they picked it up from a Bob Dylan song:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ballad_of_Frankie_Lee_and_Judas_Priest

(Why Dylan chose the name is open to speculation)

British Internet censoring soon to be illegal....

http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/news/uk_news/National/article1560128.ece

Good news one would say but those cunny little Brits are now trying to find ways to keep the ban alive by making porn illegal for certain groups of people so the censor can still stay in place.

Though on the bright side, it looks like the whole thing ended in ignominious and embarrassing defeat for the racist bunch - sure, they got their publicity, but they also got chased off and beaten up by the counter-protestors, and I picked up a subtle undercurrent that the police weren't trying as hard as they could have to protect the protest group.

Agreed.  They are just confirming that a lot of racists love that flag and when they say "heritage" it is just code for "white supremacy."  The more they babble, the worse that flag looks, so I'm more than happy to let them keep babbling.

Apparently the sweedes have submitted a proposal to join NATO, Russia is threatening vague "consequences"
in three years apparently the preposal stands at 31% of the voters in favor, with 15% opposed and 54% "meh" But two years ago it was only 12% in favor.

Am I the only one who thinks if Russia itself asked to join NATO it would give a bunch of people a heart attack, but by the Alliance's charter there would be nothing stopping it from joining and probably better off for it, even though the Russian representative would get weird looks for a long time.

It would be worth the political headaches just to see rush limbah's head explode ^,^

On a more serious note it's strange to see how the Russian Federation's aggression (both militarily in Ukrane and via loud screaming retoric) is causing Europe to re-militarize somewhat, and yet the RF is taking out massive Chinese loans to fund it's modernization program.

is it just me or china will have a very very big problem if they own 30% of the national debt of both the US and Russia, and then both countries get into a scuffle and don't pay them back.

Of all the nation's having issues right now, China I feel is the one that will be walking away with the lest long term damage. Sure, they might be dependent on other nations paying them back, but even if they don't the Western countries will still want to buy shit and China will still be making and exporting it.

I think China's biggest issue the management of internal monetary issues but even that I think it can absorb and recover from.

As for Russia. I think things are about to get difficult for Russia for a different reason. With Iran now looking at the ability to sell its oil and, by many accounts, it's got a hell of a stockpile, we will be looking at more damage on RUs economy. That said, I don't see RU crashing and burning any time soon so while it will hurt, I would rather invest in Russia then Greece right now.

Yeah well, I guess that was the conservative party, who are leading the opposition (they were leading the government for several years until last September, but did nothing about a NATO application at the time). The cabinet have discarded the idea of joining NATO, it's been a complete no-go with the two parties involved (Social Democrats and the Green party) for decades. But at the same time everybody agrees that the Swedish military - army, air force and navy - needs a real brush-up and has been seriously underfunded and undermanned for some time (don't tell Dasha about this, folks!)  :D

When Russia took over Crimea practically without a shot last spring, there were some pointed comments from ordinary people in Sweden to the effect that "essentially they could have taken the island of Gotland with about as little hard effort, right?". And in purely military terms, that's almost true - if Russia invaded Lithuania or Latvia first (which they could do in a week), Gotland, a big luscious island in the central Baltic and the summer paradise of many Swedes, would be just a hundred miles away and without a lot of steady military manpower. During the Cold war, it had much more defence hardware, more air defence and more posted units, of course.

So do we return back to the level of military spending that there was regularly during the Cold War? Hmm, big question...

I could very well see that happening, yes. I mean his head bursting.  :D

I might post that on as many military regiments around Sweden I would find the time to - it would be about three or four I suspect before I got either beaten up by some unit soldiers or had the Secret Police knocking on my front door.  :D
