Elliquiy at Work
« on: August 18, 2014, 03:44:01 PM »
Hey everyone,

I felt obligated to make a post about something that has just happened to a friend of mine who I brought in to E. I, and he, work in the software development industry and both feel very passionate about E and RPing here.

Recently (within the last 24 hours) my friend was fired from his job for logging on here to check OOC stuff while on his work computer. Apparently his company flags this website as being a pron website. And with a zero tolerance policy, there was obviously to chance to explain.

So with that in mind, if any of you like me have ever wondered whether you would get in trouble for logging onto E using your work computer, don't do it. You could get fired.

This is a common problem for many people logging in to RP sites from work.  Images, language and content are the criteria they look at.  I can get around it because I have a remote administrator and access E through my home computer from work on an open system with upper echelon admin privileges.  Most of our employees don't have access to the internet.

In my humble opinion, if they want to fire you, they will absolutely find an excuse to do so, regardless if it's E or Facebook or too long lunch pauses.

I am really sorry for your friend. :-( I hope he finds a new job soon.

My work blocks websites they consider adult.  Since Elliquiy requires a log in, the site does not set off their security measures.  That we also share the internet with our patients/customers also means that the company is limited in what they are willing to do.  I don't log in at work though because we are quite busy, I am always in the public eye and the IT department does track and log your activities online.

The fact of the matter is - in today's wired world, anyone who accesses the Internet from work should expect to be monitored.  And if what you are accessing isn't directly involved with your work, whether it's 'adult' in nature or whether it's Flappy Bird, then your boss is probably going to demand at least an accounting for the fact that you are using company equipment, even if it's not using the company's time (and especially if it is).

There are almost as many companies that have restrictions on mobile phone usage as they do on questionable websites.  You can use your mobile on breaks and during lunch but it must be off when you are on the floor.  Since you get paid for 40 hours a week you are expected to work the 40 hours.

Good rule of thumb to use:  when you use the company computer, think of your supervisor, standing behind you, looking at every single thing on your screen, and recording it to show everyone else in the company.

That is the level of privacy you have.

So if you're doing something that you think your supervisor will frown upon, then don't do it.  Just don't.  No, it doesn't matter how important you think it is or how quickly you think you can get it done.

Just.  Don't.

I check E on my phone while I'm at work almost as often as I check my text messages, and sometimes I open a word document and write responses to my role play posts during lunch or when I'm at a lull and need some inspiration for my current assignment. (I work in the creative department, so sometimes it gets really tiresome thinking outside of the box when you're being tunneled in a particular direction.)

Although I use my personal computer to write in the word documents, I never ever ever ever ever even want to risk logging on E while I'm on their network. I have a company computer, but it's only used for company related things. All the writing I do for my work and leisurely time is done on my own personal laptop. If I ever want to upload a post, I make sure to connect to my phone's hotspot and disconnect from the company's network.

Although...sometimes I wonder if they can still see me. Maybe I'm just paranoid and I don't want my coworkers and the IT guy to know that I role play...I dunno. This thread is making me wonder if they're still secretly watching me. Maybe they know that I do this and they don't care. Since they allow us to bring musical instruments and play them while we're working. I'm unsure but now my paranoia is getting the best of me. I'm not very technology savvy, so I also have a paranoia that they're looking through my history as well. Blah.

But I'm so sorry to hear about your friend and I hope he finds another job quickly. Best of luck to him!

Elliquiy is SSL only, so the only thing they can see on a computer they don't have tracking software installed on is the IP address and possibly the domain name. You can get around the latter by putting the domain and ip manually in your hosts file, but they'll still see requests to Elliquiy's IP. I didn't put in a PTR record, so the IP doesn't announce Elliquiy-ness itself, but it's still going to be a thing.

Regardless of how much technical snooping/anti-snooping is going on, all it takes is one slip-up.  Mr. Oniya once got fired from a job because - although it was his laptop and he was using it before shift started, in the back room where no customers could see it, in a store that got maybe a dozen customers between open and close - he managed to leave a DVD behind at work.

I only ever log on to E from my personal computer for this reason. As much as I love this place it wasn't worth the potential suspension for college or firing from any job I might obtain.

I am responsible for orientations for our office, and I tell my trainees over and over and over and over again that there is zero expectation of privacy on company computers. If they log onto Twitter, Wordpress, Facebook, or whatever - we can read their messages, their feed, whatever they click on. While personal sites of any nature (except visual porn) are within the company's Acceptable Use Policy, that doesn't mean we won't still look at it. Zero expectation of privacy.

Although...sometimes I wonder if they can still see me. Maybe I'm just paranoid and I don't want my coworkers and the IT guy to know that I role play...I dunno. This thread is making me wonder if they're still secretly watching me.

If you're using your personal computer and your phone's hotspot to write/post, it's highly unlikely that anyone at your workplace can watch. While there are ways to do it, they are highly unethical at best and, depending on how up-to-date your local government's laws are on digital property, they might be illegal.

My workplace doesn't have much in place with regard to websites & such. So long as we are not sharing company information, we're pretty much in the clear. However, just because I am paranoid, I tend to log on to the windows computer vs my mac...IT can spy on the Mac, they can't do shit w/the windows computer (different networks)...it's weird.

At my workplace, all ssl/https traffic is intercepted monitored, recorded, etc... likewise, we have to sign statements that state that we agree that using firm resources/equipment for non work related stuff is a firing offence .. quarterly.

In my humble opinion, if they want to fire you, they will absolutely find an excuse to do so, regardless if it's E or Facebook or too long lunch pauses.

And this here is so true. If they want you, they will keep you.. unless you work for such a large company that they don't know their asses from their elbows and don't really care who they fire or why.

I've had a few close calls where I mindlessly started to just type in a very VERY pornographic url without thinking about it and almost hit Enter.

I work for myself now, but when I was employed by the county, I would never have dreamed of using my work computer to log into E.  Even if I wasn't writing sex or doing anything pervy, that stuff is all over the place.  Not worth it.

We once had a prosecutor, one who was the superstar of our office after he'd been featured on 20/20 or one of those shows, get fired because some jerk had posted naked pictures of his wife online and he was trying to figure out how to get them down.  He'd come in over the weekend, so it wasn't during work hours, worked on cases and then started doing that.  You have to be careful professionally.

I work with children. No way can I be caught on E. No matter what, even if it wasn't an erotica site, it would still get me fired. My phone is in my pocket the minute I clock in.

I work from home so my work computer is for work stuff only. But since i work from my spare room they can't tell me I am not allowed to surf and post between calls on my personal laptop. I log into work via VPN...so they can monitor that and what is used but they do not have access to my home network and what I do on anything but my work computer.
