If you were going to do a 40k tv show, I think something focused on an Inquisitor and his retinue would probably work best. They have the most freedom to go places and show all the different strata of 40k life, and you could easily pull in the occasional Marine, SoB or xenos for the story of the week.

Great minds think alike

There was also the Ultramarines Movie; hit and miss but worth a watch.

I think the issue with doing any the "big" storylines as a live action is scale and budget. They're too big for even a three hour movie to be able to do more than scratch the surface but while a TV or mini-series would have the time it would likely lack the budget; GoT can only really afford to do one "set piece" episode a season and considering that the vast scale is one of the things that is most attractive about 40K trying to do the Heresy or the Armageddon Wars (either of them) without it would be fairly weak.

Realistically I think the most practical base for a series would be an inquisitor and their companions; you get to have an ensemble cast who can represent different aspects of the 40K universe, investigating different cases fits neatly into a "of the week + overarching story" format and, especially if you fudge which order of the Inquisition the inquisitor works for you can touch on almost all of the 40K universe; one week he's dealing with a Chaos cult, the next a genestealer infestation, then some Eldar can show up on a world, wait a week and some Necrons have risen etc etc

I was playing this game when I was 12 or so. All I knew was that super-soldiers in power armor were awesome and they shot aliens in the face.

I guess that could work that way... Similarly, I started reading X-Men comics when I was 12. Only after a decade later, when I was an adult and knew of porn, I started noticed how fetishy all those Chris Claremont stories were...

Quote
For the majority of those kids, how many of them do you think had their parents look at all the background material for the game in depth? Or did they also take the same superficial look, see 'plastic/metal toy soldiers game where pretend space troopers fight imaginary aliens' and leave it at that?

True that. On the other hand, wouldn't an average parent be a bit alarmed when seeing Daemon miniatures (Slaaneshi daemons are disturbing to look at, even if you don't know their backstory)? Or, heck, even when learning that their kid collects a demon army?

Depends on if they're religious, or how religious they are, or even what religion they follow. A Catholic family might have some issues, but there's a lot of options out there.

Yeah, it might work best if they try to write it so that the Emperor is never talked of as a god, but mentioned as their Emperor, so those not in the know don't take the show the wrong way. A good writer can pull anything off.  :-)

Inquisitor Mulder and Interrogator Scully of the Ordos Xscriptoria?

I would watch this.

Especially if Mulder is the one always insisting that the culprit is a completely normal human and Scully doesn't believe it.

I'm pretty sure that would get Inquisitor Mulder shot in the face.

No, you see, that's why they shuffled Mulder into the basement of an Inquisitorial fortress to manage the Ordos Xscriptoria rather than him rising through the ranks of the Hereticus or the Malleus or whatever.

Or... the Ordo Xscriptoria is the Ordo that deals with things that are too bizarre even for the other Ordos. So.. try to imagine what exactly would such an Ordo deal with...

But yeah, Mulder is traditionally the noncomformist thinker, right? So, it'd make sense for him to present the unorthodox viewpoints (as in: the heretics aren't evil!). Meanwhile, Scully would a Sororita preferring to go with the tried solution of setting everyone on fire... ;)

Uh...that's not just unorthodox. That's just heresy. No one thinks heretics aren't evil, they just disagree on what qualifies as heresy sometimes (and the loser of the argument is, obviously, a heretic).

We could go for a Puritan/Radical angle, though, with Inquisitor Mulder as the Radical and Inquisitor Scully as the Puritan.

Well, didn't The X-Files actually end with Mulder and Scully going fugitive?

The twist: Inquisitor Mulder regenerates between every episode. Not unlike Kenny, no one seems to find this at all suspicious.

I think it should be a new Mulder every episode. A guy who the paperwork says is Mulder so that's what everyone calls him.

And still no one finds this suspicious or even unusual.  Having him look completely different (in the manner of 'Number 2') would be an added bonus.

It's looking like the 30k plastic stuff is pretty confirmed now. There's a Horus Heresy page up on GWs website (not linked yet, and content empty, but the page is there).

Thinking about it, they may be going with this as a core set now.

40k is still there, and still going fairly strong.
WFB is being .. rebooted I suppose .. and that's a risk. It may work, it may bomb.
The Hobbit movies have finished, so interest in that line is going to dwindle over time.

With the popularity of the 30k stuff on Forgeworld, could they be looking to transition it to a core line?

Hm. Do you think that Horus Heresy might replace the 40K as WH's setting? Or could GW run both of these eras concurrently?

BTW. In my newest story idea post, I included something WH40K-based. You guys might want to have a look at it - it's the last option in the "Monstrous Transformation" idea...

I'd say they could run 30k and 40k concurrently. Effectively they are already, with Forgeworld handling the 30k side of things. If they moved 30k to standard plastics production, rather than Forgeworlds resin, I suspect they could selling fairly large amounts of stuff. Especially if they roll out the Chapter / Legion specific upgrade kits to go with the basic sets.

I don't see 40k being done away with though. It's probably their biggest game at the moment.
