I can see both your points. I thought the handler would be a fun way to give the Hitman someone else to work with, but random may be best.

Not sure if I'll have time to play another game, but wanted to offer some comments on the roles you have.

The Communication Specialist -This role is under consideration! I'd like to get some feedback from potential players in this thread before deciding if it would be fun and usable, or too powerful to use in a balanced game. Each night, the comms expert has a chance to monitor a player's outgoing messages. He will receive (from the GM), a copy of the first PM that player sends. They will not learn who the intended recipient(s) was/were, but will otherwise see the message word for word. If the monitored player does not send a PM before the next night phase, the monitoring ends when a new target is selected.

Although this is a neat idea, I think it's way to easy to neuter for the other side. Since the comm specialist only gets a copy of the first PM sent, if I were on the other team I'd just send a simple "Hi, how are you?" message as my first action every night. Now you could change this to be "the first meaningful message", but then you're in the realm of requiring GM judgment calls, which I don't think you want to do.
If you want to leave this in then I think they should either get all of the PM's for their target, or get a random chance (maybe 1 in 10) of intercepting any PM sent by any player.

The HR Specialist - A patriot employee who specializes in knowing the Patriot team and their strengths. Each night, she may choose a player. She will learn if that player has a special role or not. Characters such as the tracer, the medic, or the bodyguard, for example, will appear as 'special', whereas patriot employees, any member of The Unplugged, The Intern, and the Scapegoat will not.

I'm not sure I see the distinction of what's a "special" role and what isn't. If all of the Unplugged count as "not special" then this ability seems to be a good/evil detector with extra good stuff on top. Maybe instead of broad categories this role could have a "battleship-type" ability, where they get to ask each night if Person X is Role Y and get a yes/no answer from the GM.

The Medic - An expert in clinical and field medicine, the medic will have the option to save a player that was attacked per night, either once or twice per game, depending on the number of players. In addition, the medic may also discreetly poison one player per game (of any size). This poison is a secretive and discreet kill that cannot be blocked by the bodyguard.

Does the saving work on both Unplugged attacks as well as Patriot terminations? Also note that having this player means you'll have an extra step (and delay) each night as you ask them whether they want to use their ability or not. If they use their ability do other people see it happening?

I know I haven't added everyone to the player list yet, something's up with my tablet. Every time I try to modify the post, it says I've already submitted it. If I can't figure it out I'll have to finish my edits once I'm home.

Now for questions:

I actually really like your idea for the coms expert, Ebb. Would it be a 10% chance of every PM sent, or just those sent by a specific target? It would help solve the 'buffer post' issue you brought up. (Though I have to admit, I was looking forward to seeing people send one another or themselves 'decoy PMs' each night.

My original idea for that roll was to have them be a coms jammer, and pick a player each night that couldn't PM at all until their next phase, but then I thought that wouldn't be fun at all for the person jammed, and 86'ed it.

For the HR specialist, I figured a special role would be any of the unique Patriots, basically a role that hunts for people they can trust. I can see why you'd be concerned though, it may be a bit OP. The battleship idea you had may work best.

Lastly, the medic can only save people attacked during the night phase, as saving someone during the day would require a public revealing of their role, something I'd like to avoid in this game. On that same note, people won't see it happening, I'll simply announce there has been no kill that night. It'll be up to you guys to discuss and figure out if that's because of the medic, the bodyguard, the recruiter, or possibly because The Unplugged have been eliminated...

Well, rats. The newsbox auction is already out of my price range, so I'll just have to do good 'ol fashioned PMs to get interest this time.

If anybody knows someone who would enjoy playing, please please feel free to send them an invite!

How do you feel about the Comm Specialist having a ten percent chance to crack one specific players PM's, but they get to know how many, if any, messages that player sends? Sort of, "there was a lot of chatter, but I could only decrypt this much..." Is what I am thinking. I'm not sure if that adds any value or not to the role, however.

Or to make it a little less powerful but perhaps easier to administrate, the Comm Specialist could pick a target and then at the end of the night they get a list of how many PMs were sent by that target to each other player. That lets them then go and confront their target with "I know you were PMing with Ebb a lot last night -- what's up with that?"

It also lets someone else say that same thing, if they're bluffing that they have that role.

Even if I did you wouldn't have told me.

No you were supposed to tell us what role you had so that we could win the game.

But you did an excellent job though.

Happy to have you here.

Sorry I've been so inactive lately, everyone. I've had a lot of changes going on in my life, the biggest of which is a huge shift in my career. This Friday, I'll be getting my last paycheck from my old job, which I'm going to use part of to put an ad for the game up in the newsbox and we if we can get to around 15-19 players before we start. Once again, I apologize for the delay, and hope everyone is still interested!
