Tom 'The Kid' Gognitti had been dreaming of retirement after a couple of years. Of a nice house on a quiet island, sipping cocktails "like in the movies", with his daughter & infant grandson. While his son would take over the empire. A life of crime had made sure The Kid felt older than others at 48. He wanted to live the next few years without the shadow of death hanging over him, without having to worry about his family, his men, his business, the cops and the scum that had given organized crime a bad name. But that was not to be.

Michael Gognitti had struggled all his life to be The Kid, as every child tries to emulate his father, to walk on his steps. But he couldn't even be half as good. Or so they kept reminding him after anything he tried his hand at. The dim witted goons who were sucking his father's blood even as he kept them close and called them family. Crime had evolved, it was more about M&As and less about Molotov Cocktails now. But The Kid was stuck in an older age, refusing to grow up, much to Michael's chagrin. He'd been trying for years to show the old man the fault of his ways, but couldn't make an  impression. And then he realized, he was going about it the wrong way. A guardian angel had shown him the light. A dictator doesn't bequeath his throne to an heir, he has to be overthrown.

The story has 2 female characters - Tom's daughter (divorced, mother to an infant son, fiercely loyal & utterly devoted to her father), and another woman who loved Tom but was scorned by him about ten years back. Michael & his sister knew her when they were in their teens, but she suddenly disappeared one day. Only to return mysteriously to Michael during one of his hotel stays abroad. She was still the perfect seductress & Mike always had been bewitched by her. The story is about how her quest for revenge & Michael's quest for power unite to rock The Kid's world. His right to rule would be put to the test, and the old man wouldn't want to go down without a fight. His companion by his side, his only true family, his love (in more ways than one) - his daughter.
