Naruto D20 Interest Check: Raising a Nation
« on: October 12, 2012, 11:20:00 PM »
Set before the First Shinobi War, this game will be focused on the characters founding a nation and village for themselves. It will be using the Naruto D20 system, with some modifications. If you don't know the system, I'll try and help you as much as I can.

House Rules
Characters receive Archaic Armor and Weapon feats for free.
Skills are condensed down.
Balance, Jump, and Tumble become Acrobatics. Climb and Swim become Athletics. Listen, Search and Spot become Perception. Hide and Move Silent become Stealth.
Gestalt rules. This means you merge class skills and class abilities and take the better of defense, saves, hit points, base attack, and skill points from two base classes. Gestalt means you are limited to prestige/advanced classes on one side of the track.

Sounds interesting, would bloodline levels take one side of gestalt or both sides? Also what level range you thinked we start in the first shinobi war and will be there canon forces (like Uchica clan) involved in battlefields?

Well, since we'd have at least 3 people that are new to Naruto D20, I think starting at a low level (maybe even 1) would be best. Student ninja, thrown out into the world after fleeing from the war.

Can we get a character sheet skeleton to start working on while we await other roleplayers, or is that only in the OOC?

Okay, first off, for those who don't have the Naruto D20 pdf, you can find it here: http://www.narutod20.com/store/

The SRD for D20 Modern is as follows, but I would strongly suggest having some familiarity with D20 Modern or at least DnD 3.5 before looking to join : http://www.scratchfactory.com/ModernSRD/Home.php

Now! Character creation. Level 1 characters, don't worry you'll advance pretty quickly. 36pt buy, roll for wealth as normal. If you roll below a 4 on wealth, reroll until you get at least 5 on the raw dice. Note the house rules in the OP.

Basic character info I'd like from anyone interested:

Code: [Select]
Name:
Gender:
Age: Remember that Naruto protagonists aren't that old
Physical and Mental Descriptions: This should include what your character looks like, what they wear, how they act, any fears, dreams, etc. Give me info, but don't make it a wall of text.
Background: The game takes place just after the First Ninja War, the characters should have some reason to want to leave the known world behind. Maybe they are criminals on the run, refugees, or simply saw everything they loved burn and don't want to deal with it anymore. This is, effectively, feudal times in terms of tech. That means no electronics.
Specialty: Just a short little blurb about what your character is good at or bad at.

Name: Hanako Hyuuga
Gender: Female
Age: 17
Physical and Mental Descriptions:
Hankao is a rather soft spoken girl.  She has trouble making friends due to the fact that she was constantly moving throughout her childhood and every time she had made a friend or two they were off again.  After a time she began to just give up on trying for the most part just thinking that there was something wrong with her that it took so long to open up to someone to move just afterward.  In truth, though she didn't know it, it was largely because she made friends though that they were actually moving so often.  Hanako is not weak willed though.  While she does cry out in the middle of the night often wracked with bad dreams and worse memories, she is not afraid to stand up for herself if necessary.
Background: Hanako Hyuuga was born into a life of running and hiding.  Her mother became pregnant just before a battle between the Hyuuga clan and the invading Kaguya clan.  As a member of the branch family, Hanako's mother couldn't stand the thought of her child being brought into the world just to have the dreaded curse seal implanted on her head so she could be controlled through fear of intense pain, and so she ran away during the chaos of the battle.

Growing up, Hanako and her mother moved at least two times a year to make sure to keep their whereabouts a secret.  For this reason, eventually Hanako simply tried to keep to herself as it seemed that every time she made a new friend as a child she would have to move soon thereafter never to see her friend again.

Eventually, only days before her sixteenth birthday, her home was invaded.  Two men with white eyes like her and her mother's attacked her at her home and amazingly with no more than a simple hand sign Hanako saw her mother fall to the floor and crawl up in crippling pain.  Through some miracle, Hanako managed to cut first one, then the second's throats with a kitchen knife, but it was too late.  With just another simple hand gesture her mother lay on the floor dead.

Afraid that that would not be the end of the story, Hanako took off on her own, not sure where she would go or what she would do.  All she knew was that she needed to get stronger so she could handle herself in case someone else came for her life.
Specialty: Hanako is a taijutsu specialist with a fair bit of a knack for genjutsu, but next to no talent for ninjutsu

Name: Aki
Gender: Male
Age: 17
Appearance
Personality: A carefree person, but hard to approach as he is cautious and suspicious of others. Has 'never give up' attitude once he sets his mind into something, kind of stubborn and headstrong. Also acts like he does not care but he disguises this way his softer and more symphatic side of him.
Background: Aki was son of rice farmer family who lived in country of Rain, very soon in first shinobi war country of Rain became widespread ground for any nation or country lay warfare upon. Over first years of war he lost his whole family gradually; starting from father, then mother, then his elder brother, then younger brother protecting sister who died shortly after younger brother. Aki has buried his whole family. Same goes to his home village which was repeatedly targeted and raided for supplies, even when they had nothing to give expect receive beatting.

Aki left country of Rain, becoming wilderness surviving wanderer who wanders away from battles and warfare. Hoping find some place in world which is not plaqued by war. He has deep seething hatred for all shinobi, but yet same time he knows to survive he needs learn some of their tricks. So he had spied many battles in shadows, studied and practiced alone and by hear say and brief tips from few mercenary shinobi who bothered tell anything about basics how ninja combat works. Overall many his practices failed (some even backfired) and it took extremely long time for him to do it but he finally succeed pull some basic techniques off succesfully in relative basis.

With his skills he had survived in woods, learned how to run and hide. He hates combat but he is rather surprising adept at it and he has cunning mind which surprises most shinobi, even veterans at times when he lures enemy into part of forest which he knows and lures them into traps meant to slow them or cripple them. He often steals shinobi units rations and supplies when he runs low altough it bears enormous risks. But between starving or dying by kunai starting become egual concepts often makes man to take even crazy risks.
Specialty: Aki has none purely offensive ninjutsu but he knows dozen otherwise and even minor genjutsu. His strongest talent is at moment hiding and running and ability avoid entering combat zones and live by the land.

I mean triple affinity in form which allows use unique techniques mostly. Like Ice Release, Wood Release etc. You can get the affinity any of these two since level 1 (at least canon rules). But to able perform said techniques comes later date I think. We could rule that until my char gains the affinity under the control (meaning he takes bonus feat to learn affinity like usual) but once he has all three affinities, the bonus feat taken in 1st level becomes active and provides access to unique jutsu which no one can copy nor duplicate if they do not have similar inborn affinity.

Example in present Village of Mist kage has three affinities which gives her two kenkei genkai; fire, water and earth. Allowing to do acidic mist or magma release.

With case of Kekkei Tōta you combine three elements to single technique (instead split up and know two kenkei genkai).

Okay fine, I would play then just a guy who had self-taught himself ninjutsu and origins wise he is just a farmer who looks a place not plaqued by war. Enough normal for you?

Can we get a few more guidelines on how the RP will run, a little bit more backstory blurb (Since I'm not nearly familiar enough with the really early Naruto history stuff), and any details on things that would not be allowed like those triple element affinities and whatnot?

(Mainly so I can have time to find the newest version of the rules, since the last time I looked at it was when it was under early development :x )

I'm interested and I'll begin genning a character right away, so give me a little bit. I know a bit of D20, but haven't ever tried this naruto system so I may be a bit silly here and there.

My concept is a little out of the ordinary, but I hope it's not too out-there, especially since I won't get to use any cool stuff from it for a couple of levels at least. XD

Name: Hyakutake Torako
Gender: Female
Age: 16
Physical and Mental Descriptions: Torako is the youngest, and the smallest, of the group of refugees from the Shinobi World War. She stands at a meager 4'10" with a light, almost fragile, build. She's definately not the most intimidating ninja around, and you wouldn't expect her to wield any kind of heavy weaponry. Her ninja clothing is very casual, little more than the padded jackets popular among genin over shinbi mesh and shorts. She carries a few toolkits and pouches for her gear, but not much in the way of real weaponry. Unusual for a ninja, she actually wears glasses due to being extremely farsighted. Great for someone who fights at range, but not so much if you get forced into taijutsu.

Torako knows she's not the most impressive or skilled genin around, but she's a hard worker. She takes her studies fairly seriously, and trains hard to improve her skills. Torako is most assuredly a ninjutsu specialist, like the rest of her family, mainly because she's never been that comfortable with getting hands-on with Taijutsu, and she doesn't like Genjutsu particularly much. She's more than happy to let everyone else take center stage, while she carefully prepares her ninjutsu techniques. In the end she just doesn't function well on her own, considering she came from a family of summoners and was always surrounded by animals and other ninja. The one thing she doesn't want is to be left alone, and be useless, especially now that she's lost her family.

Background: Torako was born to a tribe of shinobi that lived on the edge of Fire Country, allied with the newly established Konohagakure. Her family was seen as primitive, though talented, due to their long-standing contract with the Tiger summon clan. In an effort to be more progressive and learn to get along better with their new allies, they began to send their young to train at the Konohagakure academy. Torako was one of the first, and while not particularly impressive, she was able to become a genin successfully even without the help of her tribe.

Sadly, during the Shinobi World War her tribe was seen as a large threat to some of the rival nations. The Oni tribe, a group of summoners that had the blood pact of the Oni much like Torako's family had the Tiger, ambushed her village while some of the higher level jounin were recuperating. While many of the Oni tribe were slain, Torako's village was completely devastated. Rather than let their techniques fall into enemy hands, several of the ninjas were ordered to flee and seek refuge with Konoha. Torako herself had the sealed summoning scroll, though with all of the chaos going on at the time, she was unable to make it to Konohagakure. In fact, by the time the war had ended she fled the Five Great Nations with the scroll, in order to ensure that nobody could take it. It didn't help that she blamed the leaders of Konoha for not supporting her tribe in their time of need. Now she's just focusing on helping her fellow refuges create a new nation where they can live and work together, as well as trying to unlock the secrets of her tribe's Tiger companions, but as a mere genin it's been slow-going.

Specialty: Torako is definately a Ninjutsu specialist, with less ability to use genjutsu, and poor taijutsu skills. She is attempting to learn her family's summoning skills, so she can utilize the power of the Tiger Summons like they did before the Oni tribe destroyed them.

Here's mine! Tell me if I need to correct anything as I was being cheeky!

Name: Kaguya Ibuki
Gender: Herm (Get it?)
Age: 18
Physical and Mental Descriptions: Ibuki is a rather tall girl, standing at about 5'8 with a rather atheletic build that accentuates her frame. While she has a pretty easygoing attitude, it hides her bloodlust that springs up from time to time due to her upbringing and family. Ibuki is sorta lazy, not one to really pick a fight, but she certainly will end one in the worst way possible if you let her. Wearing what's in the picture above, Ibuki isn't one for worrying about clothing styles and changes them often to throw off anyone following her as she moves about.

While at times she fights like a berserker, Ibuki actually fears losing control of her bloodlust like her family did, as well as many others in her clan. She wants to be as normal and as easygoing as possible, but it seems as if circumstances won't allow that without a fight.

Background: Hailing originally from the Hidden Mist, Ibuki was raised in chaos from most of her life. From the moment that she could walk, she was taught how to fight and how to survive on her own. She hated it, every last minute of it she hated it and it only got worse from there. Ibuki's parents were wielders of the clan's bloodline limit and were avid fighters on the frontlines that enjoyed bloodshed and death. They enjoyed it so much that they instilled in all their children the want to shed blood. As Ibuki grew older, she felt it was natural to want to shed blood, much like her parents wanted.

It wasn't until her parents' bloody corpses were brought back to the village one day that Ibuki lost all sense of reason. What was she talking about? Shedding blood was a good thing? No it wasn't! All the other Kaguya commented on how they died a good death, but that wasn't what she wanted for herself. It never was! So under the guise of the night, Ibuki left behind her village and everyone she knew. She had to escape that fate somehow!

Specialty: Ibuki is good at fighting with bladed weaponry and isn't as good with ninjutsu due to lack of practice.
