What is the size restriction for avitars?

Hi, I'm new and was just wondering what the size restrictions for the avitars were, I'm not sure where it is in the rules.

No particular size restriction, but it's impolite to have a large avatar.

Upload your sexy avatar to imageshack and that website can easily resize your avatar for you.

so, my avatar of choice is the right size and I've tried uploading it as a gif and jpg, but everytime i try to say my profile i get and error.

It says That the size is wrong or its not an avatar, now i use the preloaded avatars but i cant upload or link one of my own. What am i doing wrong?
