Interest check for a Skyrim roleplay
« on: June 30, 2012, 10:20:35 PM »
So, Ive been really invested into Skyrim lately and was wondering how many people would be interested in the idea of a large (or small) group role play in the harsh land of Skyrim.

I was going to wait and see how many people were interested, and then take a quick poll to see if anyone wanted to do this before, during, or after the war between the Empire and Stormcloaks. And then come up with a plot from there, because I only have one for after the war.

I feel like this could be a really good RP, the TES series is amazing and Skyrims one of the best games I've seen so far. So I'm interested. :3

Skyrim was great, but it kind of falls into the normal Conan-type RPG as a setting in general.  It really depends on the system you would use (if there is one), the amount of detail and posting length/frequency, but I may be interested in joining.  Maybe the best part would be agreeing on the setting, equipment, magic limitations, antagonists, etc.   I'd prefer a small group, simple rules, limited magic, no dragonborn/dark brotherhood... that kind of thing.

For the post length, I want to make a two full paragraphs the minimum, that should be enough for "some" detail just in case we get a few inexperienced people to join in. No, I didn't plan on there being a dragon born character, if we were to play during the war, then the story would move at a speed based on Dovakiin's actions, and no DragonBorn also means no shouts. As for equipment, we're going off of the game NPC's, mages can't wear anything but the clothes seen on students in the college or the random necromancers, while Legion or Stormcloak aligned people can only wear those outfits, and adventurers have free reign depending on their class sheet.

And I'm going to say this is enough people to start out with, but it is time for a few questions to see where everyone stands.

Time period: Before, during, or after the civil war between Legion and Stormcloaks?

Character sheet: To make things simple I was thinking we use a slightly altered Oblivion styled character sheet, that we we don't have over complex people running about, so you would get to choose three main skills and that's pretty much what you got. Agree, disagree, suggestions or comment?

Additional skill: I'm also thinking of making skills like enchanting, smithing, and potion's an additional part of the character sheet where each character gets one of these skills, and with smithing for example, that also incorporates mining for the ore, so whichever one you are, you are able to gain your own supplies. Anyone like the idea, or hate it?

With that, does anyone else have any questions or would like an additional comment be made?

I'd agree on simple rules (perhaps just use 'stats' as a guideline to let people know who's good at what or better at what?). But just choosing a few special skills also works.

A lot of Skyrim/TES games expect people to start from the bottom and work their way up, but lose momentum before people really get to have their characters the way they wanted them from the get go. Would be nice to see a game let characters start off with better equipment, maybe the option of a special/unique item each? If they want it.

Do you plan on 'GMing' in any regard or just taking part yourself and stepping into moderate something in the event an issue comes up?

I plan on being the GM for everything at the start, but say we have an abundance of High Elves, then I would elect someone to pretty much be an adviser for me so I don't have to look through a ton of threads, and the same situation for factions, whoever is the leader is an adviser for me, because I do plan on playing as well.

The whole rags to riches thing got a bit old for me, so I did actually plan on everyone starting off with gear and steel weapons or the dual casting spell of choice.

Skills, I was trying to go off something that would still allow plenty of freedom and choice with the characters, but not be overzealous like Skyrim, so someone isn't summoning a utilizing a little of everything, they have their adept skills.

As for unique weapons, what exactly do you mean? Like a family blade of custom make or are you talking about Deadric artifacts?

Daedric artifacts, dragonpriest masks. Obviously some are more powerful then the others so it might be on a case by case situation but yes. That's what I was thinking.

You don't need artifacts or mask to become OP. All you need is a bow, a dagger, and the proper amount of stealth.

I'll keep an eye on this, was thinking about trying to get people together for something like this. But at the moment you seem to have a lot of people on this so I'll probably wait with introducing my unarmed argonian to the Elliquiy scene. :p

Could take a major skill/minor skill approach. Let people pick a few major skills to represent what they are very good at (maybe 3?) then a few more to represent what they're rather good at (another 3? maybe 4?) and the rest are just skills they can use as well as any other random inhabitant of Skyrim. 3 Majors and 4 Minors would give people the room to create the "multiclass" type characters TES encourages oh-so-much while not giving access to every ability under the sun.

Also, I assume this game is including the new stuff from Dawnguard?

I wish I could, but I don't have it yet, and really don't want to spoil it for myself.

The classes, I was thinking a slightly edited version of Oblivion's. With spells you can select one type from destruction such as Flame or Shock and use it for minimal damage unless you're a mage or a battle mage, which they can get a full fireball or a more damaging Flame.

The system I see working is three or four major skills that you mainly use, and then being crap in everything else, but still able to do it to some degree, and then having the "farming" skills like smithing, enchanting, and alchemy as something you're allowed to have one of, but at the start of the game already have that skill at level 50, so kind of a mix between WoW and Elder Scrolls character leveling.

The reason I stated three or four, is because Light Armor, Archery, One Handed, and Restoration would all make for a nice archer, while Destruction, Heavy Armor, Restoration, and Two Handed would make for a nice battle mage. So I was thinking the major skills are all we use for the most part, but still being able to do Novice of everything else. How does that sound?

I'd say keep it as simple as possible. Say four skills you excel at, the rest being mediocre. That way there is more room for the group to find a dynamic, helping each other rather than competing with each other. That way you would also let the different characters gravitate socially towards each other, creating naturally grown relationships.

That sounds good, I'll have the character sheet up within the hour.

----------------------------------
Here's the character sheet and a few reminders. If your character has a major skill in archery, then you can use almost any bow, same with armor, if its a major then you can wear the highest in that class, but doing a little brainstorming I'm thinking it would be best to not include Daedric or Dragon Bone weapons in the game just yet, seeing as they're hard to get a hold of in the game. Any questions should be asked within the thread.

Pretty much done, but prone to minor changes.

Name: Blind-Eye
Age: 28
Race: Argonian
Height: 6'10"
Weight: 220 lbs
Appearence: While most argonians at least keep a somewhat slender build, Blind-eye have become a massive slab of tendons and muscle. His peculiar preference to unarmed combat and physical background in working the docks and smithing has shaped him accordingly, creating a rather large argonian who have won many a staring competition against nord and orc alike. As his name implies, he is blind on his left eye, being a milky white in contrast to his clear blue right eye. His scales might be mistaken as black, but are rather a very dark shade of green, something which becomes more apparant when the lighting reflects the dark green hue. His jaw and brow is lined with the bony spikes that are common in argonians, but he has no horns, his head covered in deep red feathers instead. His scale is also occasionally broken up with some red streaks, especially n his back and around his facial features. He prefers to wander clad in steel and fur, donning a thick cloak as the winds and snow picks up around him. Lately he has tried to smith some proper gauntlets to put some metal between his knuckles and enemies, but so far his tremendous strength has shown the weakness of ordinary steel, which has lead him on a hunt for stronger materials.
Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

Image courtesy of meken@deviantart, slightly edited by account of bigass sword on back...
He is a pretty rowdy individual, loud and open with his opinions. So far none has been able to knock him to the ground for his offensive comments (imagined or otherwise) and even if that day would come it wouldn't stop him from standing up and saying it again, louder and prouder than before. To put it frankly his stubborness so far knows no bounds. It remains to be seen if he has a softer side to him, but so far none has been successful in luring it out.

Sexual orientation: Bisexual (have yet to explore his sexuality though)

Backstory: Blind-Eye was the only one born from a clutch in the Argonian Assemblage to a gentle mother and a very strict father. At his hatching his eyes wouldn't open up, staying a milky white. Realizing he could barely feed himself and his wife, let alone a blind child with no real future, he took the hatchling out into the cold night with the intent of drowning it in the freezing murky waters of the Windhelm docks. But as he lowered the child towards the cold water it clutched around his arm with unpredicted strength, holding onto its father. As he pulled the child up again he saw its right eye had opened up, a blue eye with thin slit looking back at him. While his left eye never lost it's milky white he at least had a chance at becoming a productive mouth to feed.

Blind-Eye as the child was named started working at an early age, helping his father with the workload, even earning the occasional coin from the rare kind sailor. All the while he was told stories by the argonian community about the Black Marshes and tales of argonian heroes. His ancestral pride grew with every story and he especially liked the stories his father told him about the Shadowscales. In his eight year his mother hatched a single egg which resulted in his sister, Kirala, being born under the sign of The Shadow. His parents spoke much about the Shadowscales after that, his mother sitting by Kirala's crib night after night waiting for some shadowy figure to come and steal her away.

When Kirala reached the age of five and still hadn't been taken away in the night, their father started spending time with her, training her with bow and arrow on the banks around Windhelm. Blind-Eye was by then an apprentice to an elderly argonian smith, learning the trade of crafting tools, weapon and armor. It was during this time that he also started to venture into the Grey Quarters with his friends to fight with the dunmer kids, shouting names of Black Marsh heroes as they did so. The bitter irony of these little gang wars was not lost on the adults, kicking up the ancient rivalry between the two races. While Kirala got all the attention their father had to spare, Blind-Eye took out his frustration and jealousy on the dunmer, earning a reputation as a fierce street brawler.

As he grew older his bitter contempt shifted from the dunmer to the Nords. After all both dunmer and argonians were little more than slaves under the nords, toiling in the docks or living in squalor in the ghettos. By now he was quite an impressive specimen, stronger even than most of the nord guards of Windhelm. Many were the nights when he and his argonian and dunmer "bretheren" took to the streets to pick fights with drunken nords and belligrent city guards. Both his father and sister despised his behavior, while he in turn despised the close kinship the two had with each other. But all changed over a cold winter night in his 21st year. Having become drunk and brave with mead and wine, the bretheren wnet out into the streets, finding a group of four guards, as drunken with the same coction of spirits. A fight errupted, more brutal than ever before, ending up in one of the guards drawing his sword. In that moment Blind-Eye's father stepped in from the shadows to interrupt the fight, only to be cut down by a strike meant for Blind-Eye. Driven to franzy, the young argonian threw himself at the shocked guard, ripping out his throat with his bare hands and lifting him over his head to drop him back first over his knee. Leaving the guard dead and his comrades fleeing in terror, he picked up his dying father and carried him back to their home. Even with his dying breath he would only speak to Kirala, which drove Blind-Eye to a fit of anger, cursing both his father and sister as he disappeared into the night, making his way over the frozen water and away from the city.

Unable to return to Windhelm, having a bounty for four dead guards on his head for some reason, Blind-eye began to wander the width of Skyrim, taking work as a smith in villages all over the land and even making some good coin and fame in arena-fights with his unequaled martial skill. He often travelled with the Khajiit, becoming very fond of the cat-folk. He always tried to help fellow argonians, dunmer and khajiit in his travels, giving them coin or protection when no other would. So far he has been unable to see anything other than bad things in the nords and other human races, driving his dispise of them even further. Having travelled the lands for seven years he is starting to think about returning to Windhelm to find his mother and sister again, but so far he has been able to avoid it. Instead he has started spreading controversial ideas through the minority populations of Skyrim, earning scorn from the authorities and some amount of minor fame among the beast-folk and lesser mers.

Major skills
1: Unarmed (I know there is no such skill anymore, but I think I need to emphasize his unusual combat tendencies.)
2: Heavy Armor
3: Smithing
4: Restoration

Main weapons/spells
Blind-Eye generally use his fists or feet backed up by massive muscle. As such he often ends up with some pretty nasty cuts and minor fractures and have developed a talent for Healing and Healing hands.

Name: Ragnar Wisewind
Age: 63
Race: Nord
Height: 6"3
Weight: 240 lbs
Appearance:
Sexual orientation: Straight

Back story: A native of Skyrim, Ragnar Wisewind hales from Whiterun. As a boy he was restless and eager, ambitious and foolhardy. There was always some hunting trip he had planned or ruin he wished to investigate. He would journey with friends he had made as a child and they would delve into caves or ruins to loot what they could and sell anything valuable to help but food in the belly of their families. Life was good for the most part, but Ragnar had a brother, Eric and the two hated each other. Nothing could pass by without the two quarreling about it. On many times a brawl would break out, but usually it was broken up quickly by friends of family and rarely was it anything serious. But it came to pass that the two had a tremendous argument that descended into another fight, but this time none could break them apart, talented warrior and experienced adventurers in their own right now, they had become tough and hardy. By the time the fight was over, the two had just about broken each other apart. Broken fingers and ribs, teeth being picked out of bloody snow. It damn near broke their mothers heart. Ragnar made a decision the next day, Whiterun was too small for his brother and he. He was leaving.

Ragnar vanished in the night, taking what things he could wear or fit in a napsack and enough gold to get him to the College of Winterhold. That was been Ragnar's home ever since. Although admitted after proving some natural affinity for magicka, it was not an easy road for him. Ragnar was not one to shy away from a challenge, but he was not familiar with challenges of the mind. In time however, his indomitable spirit and mental resilience won out and Ragnar became a brilliant battlemage. Years passed by with Ragnar spending his time researching dwemer ruins and tales of the Dragon Priests of old, his strength of arm and flexibility of mind aided him in getting places some of his peers could not and he was often called on to escort others. Some time ago, the then reigning Arch-Mage was required to travel to Cyrodil and expected his return could take quite some time. In his absence Ragnar was made acting Arch-Mage. The Arch-Mage however would never return, seemingly vanished on the roads as he returned to Skyrim, some claimed it was assassination but no true evidence has ever come to light to support such a notion. The wizards of the College convened and deemed they were satisfied with the manner in which Ragnar had been leading the College in his time as acting Arch-Mage and his position was made permanent and full. For two and a half decades now Ragnar Wisewind has been the Arch-Mage of the College.
