future war-needing ideas and imput
« on: February 10, 2012, 11:19:13 PM »
I am thinking of a warfare based RP and am looking for imput and advice on nations and such. I have many ideas and will post them as time goes on, but I just spent three hours typing out ideas and accidently pressed backspace at the wrong time.

Regardless the war is in in the future a decent wasy. I've got an idea of the sides involved.

China: Now the world's primer superpower forced to expand eastward to avoid cracking under internal pressure as the PCPOC (people's communist party of china). desprately holds onto power.

the Euro-State: the decendent of the EU coming out of the 22nd century economic crisis with a hunger to expand, they have high tech, and specialist forces that work togeather from various euro-nations but lack consistancy and their Nationalisim gets in the way at times.

Global Liberation Army: facing attacks from the east and west the middle east, FINALLY having a moment of peace and education after US/NATO victory the terror wars of the 21st century, have fallen back on old terrorist ways with a secular twist, giving them a larger recruitment pool, and making them more vicious.

Russian Federation: seeing the asian conflicts as a chance to regain former glory russia enters the fray for resources and to curb chinese and euro ambitions in asia, and bringing america along as backup.

United States of America: turning inward to repar cultural, economic, political, and idological problems, a new america has emerged onto the scene to assist it's russian trading partners and the states it created in the middle east. bringing high tech weapons and elite forces to the fray to back up russia's brute force.

Err... the GLA is already in use by Command and Conquer: Generals. It's essentially the same thing as you just described. Verbatim, name and everything.

Other places to look would be the India-Pakistan issues, and New Mexican/Latin American Empire, and possibly something with Africa, possibly with a neo-apartide, if you want to play it really risky. Also, it never hurts to look into space-based economic, political, and warfare issues. Maybe the U.S. has a weapons platform in space and the rest of the world thinks it's too much of a threat. If you want to subvert it just have it be a pretty bare-bones nuke launcher.

I remember some kind of roleplay a friend of me started online a few years ago. It takes a lot of work from the storyteller but it is a wonderfull concept.  Everyone plays a nation with his own strenght and weaknesses.  You have to make alliances with other nations, invade territories, send diplomatic envoys, trade etc.   There were also random stuff like floods, vulcanic eruptions, etc or rebellions depending on decissions people made :)  .

This sounds like a really fun idea.  I'd love to take part in it once you get it off the ground.  I can't, unfortunately, give you any ideas, haha.  Sorry.  :-[

I like what Garou said. and I think I'm more or less shooting for that, a little more combat based but still.

you got me thinking on the GLA more Inkidu
as it stands after me thinking about it more, in this future they use outdated american tech left over from the Terror Wars or supplied during the nation building efforts that followed. Such as apachie helicopters, while the rest of world uses advanced drones and euro/american forces, modern military weapons, or current prototypes have borne fruit.

that aside I'm thinking of a new crises and flashpoints now thanks to you too.
also I'm thinking of creating a Latin America Empire, I'm thinking a republic starting in Brazil and spreading outward to encompass the northern half of the contanant.

I had the image of each army's grunts in my head too.
China: unlike other soldiers who have advanced body armor, high tech gear, and so on, the average Chinese PLA trooper has no big backpack of gear either, the supply convoy's are never far away. That said their helmet is utilitarian as is their uniform much like the WW2 allied soldier they are professionally dressed tie and all, partly meant for impressive display. they carry the YK-79 a chinese decendent of the AK series what it lacks in stopping power and stability (compared to the furutistic guns of this age) you could run one over with a tank in the mud and it would still work. each enviroment has a diffrent uniform, all solid color.

Euro-State: Euro-troopers exact look varies widely but all have light exo-armor and are fully kitted out and well camoflaged. they have a headset and eye scanner that gives them by the second updates on the battlefield. This is both a great strengh and great weakness, it hasn't been fully tested in the battlefield yet because one man's terror can spread like a virus, same with his courage. while this gives the average soldier more flexability, the combined defence forces layout allows buracratic problems to get in the way. every drone strike has to be approved by the general's staff, meaning support is slow to arrive for euro-troopers in the field.

GLA: gone are the days of the raggity dressed, bearded, religious fanatic relying on blending into the civilan population. The modern GLA trooper wears fatuges, a flack vest, and baret with his national/warlord pin. Their actual equipment varies widely based on who their warlord is, his bank account, and who they've been fighting lately (they steal and scavange.) this was born out of a desire to appear as a professional army by various warlords and not a scraggily group of terrorists.

Russia: not quite sure

United States: camo pattern, a pack of equipment, and exo armor much like their european counterpart, unlike the euro-trooper an american soldier's exact loadout varies by his profession. the americna Command and Control system allows a commander an overview of the battlefield and lets the average grunt call in attacks on targets without the paperwork of his european counterpart.

also as an afterthought, India and Pakiastan are unlikely to launch at each other, with the threat having loomed so long even today their ambassadors and presidents are on a first name basis and have hotlines.
though... a breakdown in communications, ego getting in the way... ooh ideas...
the space based economic political and warfare stuff might be a great way to create the tension between the more advanced powers... good idea

Russians: while not having the most modern army there is a lot of patrionism.  Soldiers are proud to die for the motherland and will not retreat easily.  In games terms they have a better morality).  Give them access to a few old nukes too which is dangerous to handle because there is a a chance people in the environment of the bomb (not yet exploded) can become of ill of it.  also chemical attacks and something like that?

I kind of like that Clancy Endwar game for Russia. They invented some kind of future-reactor tech that let them forgo oils and rise to the top of the economic ladder. However, other possible routes are the restoration of the Czar under s really questionable constitutional monarchy.

Also, North and South Korea, maybe a reemerging Japanese sense of culture and technological engineering backed by the occasional soldier in what would essentially be power armor. When it takes an RPG to take down one guy a small army works.

hmmm... maybe for russia a combination of old and new.
like the chinese military I designed they decend from the same Cold war military style, and their troops are patrotic.
at the lowest section we have the "Wolves" slang for the poor footsloggers, the Czar and the military realized they have mountians of soviet hardware that with a little modern refurbishing and a few new toys, would provie the "wolves" with good, if not advanced, equipment. AK-84's might not chew through powered armor or a tank on their own a squad of twelve can put a lot of heat on a target and they don't jam.
while a T95 (refurbished T90) cannot face a modern MBT it functions as a russian light tank, and with new engine modifications it excells in that role alongside the modern T150. it also excells in a support role with various modifications, such as flamethrowers, or mistles for engaging air targets. the best thing about the T95, there are always more of them.
Like the chinese PLA they feel no compunction against using tactical nuclear weapons on the battlefield but whereas the chinese prefer artilery shells with nuclear warheads, the Russians launch them in mistles swarms to prevent Anti-mistle weapons from shooting them down. if you fire 50 and one gets through.. that's all you need.
The toughest of the "wolves" are the spetnaz commandos who started as conscripts and worked their way up into Spetnaz.

complimenting the standard russian military are "Czarist troops" who are much more high tech and more modernized than the standard troops. Czarist weapons are often proppaganda peices as well as being deadly. for example they include Cossak Light Tanks, Imperial power armor, and rail gun armed heavy tanks. while americans have developed a rail gun that can be used by PA infantry they are leery about charing the exact details of such a deadly weapon yet.

by this time the world has moved off of fossel fuels, and some areas adjusted better than others. (lack of oil money caused economic collapse in the middle east, but removed a lot of corruption.) Russia is energy independent, I'm thinking of going with since Russia and America are allies in this world they joint developed a safe cold fusion reactor. somthing the other sides don't have access to.
I liked the idea of the restoration of the Czar, I'm thinking russia will be less like an old imperial monarchy and the Czar is the military leader while the russian senate handles most of the day to day works, a bit like the english parliment. the administration varies from benovlent to brutal depending what the czar is like.

China: Now the world's primer superpower forced to expand eastward to avoid cracking under internal pressure as the PCPOC (people's communist party of china). desprately holds onto power.

From your description I'm envisioning China in a manner that is similar to that of Russia in World War Two. This current conflict either will make China stronger then ever, or cause it to collapse and be crushed utterly. Recently China has been modernizing and downsizing its military. In a conflict like this it can't afford to. I see the Chinese engaging in a more advanced version of the Korean War. They'll deploy large numbers of low tech, motorized and foot infantry forces and use mobile armored and mechanized forces as reserves. Chinese infantry will come from the rural and peasant and urban areas and thus be used to hardship. They'll engage in classic infiltration and attack units with overwhelming local superiority, superior movement over rough terrain, and the use of lots of explosives like hand grenades and rocket launchers and automatic in close combat. On the defense they'll create elaborate but ultimately static defenses in depth that depend more on enveloping pincer style counterattacks then holding ground. Ultimately though, they spend more lives then everyone else.

Quote
Global Liberation Army: facing attacks from the east and west the middle east, FINALLY having a moment of peace and education after US/NATO victory the terror wars of the 21st century, have fallen back on old terrorist ways with a secular twist, giving them a larger recruitment pool, and making them more vicious.

They'll make use of assymetric warfare most definitely. Not sure what you mean by giving them a secular twist, I assume it's some sort of Islam or Arab nationalism. The model of Hezbollah in the 2006 Lebanon War would be the best model to base their forces off of. GLA conventional forces would likely still be largely inferior to any of the other powers and due to cultural issues, unable to engage in complicated tactics or maneuvers but still be rather durable and tenacious in the face of the enemy. Their main strength will be the use of insurgent operations to attack enemy supply and communication lines, terrorist attacks, ambushes, and harassment fire etc. Due to the lack of capability of their conventional forces, their light infantry/commando forces will have to make use of advanced anti-air and anti-armor guided missiles, IED's, mortars, rockets and other light, disposable and easily hidden weapons.

Quote
Russian Federation: seeing the asian conflicts as a chance to regain former glory russia enters the fray for resources and to curb chinese and euro ambitions in asia, and bringing america along as backup.

The Russians don't have the manpower advantage they did back in the day. I can see them still envisioning using superior armor and artillery assets to wage a devastating ground campaign. They'll have superior armor and artillery forces, but similar manpower or even inferior compared to other groups. But their organization will allow the mobilizing of large amounts of reserves and so forth. Their air force will be primarily used to support ground forces. It'll treat its different fronts like a single massive battle, with attacks, counterattacks and constant probing and other tactics, and then wait for the enemy to make a mistake and when it occurs, use its artillery as a cover and armor as a dagger and attack and exploit the gaps and reserve forces to consolidate its gains. Basically its an active defense widely, but only until they find a way to exploit a mistake of the enemy, then they hammer in an attack. (or counterattack) When these attacks are launched, they are intended to destroy the enemy, not just cause it to retreat and regroup. They'll pursue until they're nearly out of fuel, soldiers or endurance.

Quote
United States of America: turning inward to repar cultural, economic, political, and idological problems, a new america has emerged onto the scene to assist it's russian trading partners and the states it created in the middle east. bringing high tech weapons and elite forces to the fray to back up Russia's brute force.

The Americans can still maintain a premier edge in technology and thus will likely use massive amounts of smart weaponry and other firepower to crush its enemies as opposed to spending lives and vehicles. They'll use their superior mobility and motorized forces in various armored flanking attacks, pincer moves, feints, and envelopment attacks including ones using airborne or heliborne forces. If attacked, they'll attempt a mobile defense, because retreats tend to transform into routs. There'll be a large latitude allowed for commanders tactically to exploit and take the initiative, far more then other nations with the exception of the EU. An ideal situation would be either enveloping enemy forces, pinning them in battle or causing them to retreat and thus engage in a decisive battle in which they'll inflict ridiculous amounts of enemy casualties. The Air Force and Navy however won't be attached at the hip like with the Russians and would pursue their own wars, mainly in first achieving air and naval dominance before supporting the grunts.

holy crap neysha thank you (I would have ben on sooner but we had a comunications blackout for a few days when a truck went off the road, and crushed a fiber optic line it was helarious to see people freaking out over cell phones)
you pretty much hit the nail on the head of what I needed, but I am still open to suggestions about background, politics, weapons, and so on.

the secular twist on the GLA (had to put a lot of thought into each side, but nobody asks about the makeup of the US military XD ) is that their leaders do draw on nationalistic and cultural sentiment which colors the group, many arabs, persians, and so on feel their way of life is under threat by the expanding Republic of China and Euro-State, yet it's no longer possable for a group like the GLA to use religious dogma to draw support, the well on that proppaganda trick ran dry near the late 21st century.
the other thing I wanted to make clear is that the GLA uses more than commando squads and local millita, to compliment their dirty tactics they do have conventional forces drawn from local (more stable) states and surplus bought on the black market. For example The Fatih 15 (conquer), bought from turkey is fast, armored, and as rugged as an AK-75. that said, the GLA usually lacks powered or exo armor, and The Fatih-15 is the closest they come so it will not stand up to other tanks in single combat, thus is a tank built for hit and run, able to out-run just about everything in it's catagory. to accentuate their hit and run style they also have helicopters, and outdated-MIGs but the rest of the world have V.T.O.L. craft and drones in the skies so they don't get used often unless it's to deliver a sneak attack.
They are not "Jhadists" fighting "infidels", they paint themselves as "freedom fighters" battling "imperialists" this means a bigger budget, bigger recruitment pool, and the black market and private sector feel more at ease selling to them. it also prevents fractures along religious lines.

I'll write about, lets do the E.U. or China tomorrow, then the US for the finallie maybe? we have a lot more tech toys than I realized, and amazing intelligence gathering tech for the battlefield.

the People's Republic of China: china has thrived in the last few centuries after the United States withdrew in isolation it's younger leadership supplanting the old party with a new, more modern outlook. Dispite this china never stepped in as "world cop" focusing on internal problems and economics. the POCPC's idea of "china first" diplomacy has lead to great wealth and power across the globe for the new superpower. after the Tiwan conflict, in which the Chinese military used overwhelming conventional firepower to negate more sofisticated countermeasures, china was left with s surplus of military might, and began snapping up smaller states across eastern asia. the only holdouts being the Democratic Republic of Japan, the Unified Korean Republic, the economic powerhouse of India, and Free Tibet. (finally broke away while the south asian wars were going on.)
But as with every other expanding empire, more is never enough. Prosparity and victory in the South Asian Wars brought a baby boom china could ill- afford, unlike the US after WW2 China, with lifespans extended by new medical science, did not have room for the overwhelming number of newborns. The Children of POCPC as this generation is known, (due to incentives by the party for having more kids during the wars to replace losses.) have grown up in a world where there is never enough food, land, fuel, energy, or space. Thus like the United States centuries ago, the POCPC has opened the western boarder for expansion, a manifest destiny obsession is gripping the overpopulated industrialized country, settlers are heading into the sands and mountians to strike their claims. once barren sand can be turned into fertile farmland, cities, and more with modern technology. to stagnate and fail would cause civil war, make the country fracure, and plunge the country into the dark ages.

military wise china has overwhelming manpower, protecting it's expanding people with it's vast number of redguard infantry, APC's, and conventional firepower, keeping tanks and artilery in reserve when such forces are needed. china does not subscribe to the armored infantry doctrine like europe and the US, prefering to slug it out with conventional tanks, APC's, napalm, and infantry laying down withering fire from automatic weapons and the heaviest armor on the planet The Mao 66 Superheavy Tank. Their population gives them an advantage, now industrialized the assembly line is china's greatest weapon in this war. putting much of the population to work making weapons, tanks, bombs, and firepower means high employment, productiveity.

The Mao 66: the centerpeice of many forces and rolling monument to chinese industrial might. the mao has crew, armor, firepower, and size more akin to a battleship than a tank. china's overpopulation and access to vast mineral resources makes it possable to deploy these things. But it has it's weakness it's size is a disadvantage, as it cannot stop moving or sink into the ground, and has a hard time in terrain it can't roll over. this also limits it to a direct assault and command role. Lastly it uses an atomic reactor to power the massive thing.

I enjoy it when futures mix up preconceptions a bit.  200 years from now there's no reason to hold onto current power bases so much.  Also, projections for environmental change could prove interesting.

Imagine a future where America's heartland is a desert waste, but the sahara is endless fields of wheat, things like that.  Africa is ALWAYS left out of these things, despite a huge population, vast land area and rich natural resources; a generation or to of horrible industrial change could put them in a powerful position, just like China's change from the 1930s to now.

Does the US get the lazors? I'm kind of interested to see what you've come up with for the U.S.

Also, I'm not to sure on the secular part of the Middle Eastern faction. It's not as cohesive as most think. Every Arab state basically hates every other Arab state, and the only reason they've not bombed themselves back to the stone age is because of Israel.

Although if you're looking for a trigger, that could be it. Faced with the overwhelming force of the GLA Israel finds itself backed into a corner, without its traditional U.S. allies and no other support it begins to launch nukes at strategic GLA locations, mainly oil fields which would spark a stock resource war.

United States of America.
after the ecnomic collapse of 2018 and military stagnation that followed the terror wars, the NATO alliance becoming insolvant with the advent of the paneuro-state. In order to protect it's own economy and national interistists from growing corprate influence the United States began to slowly adopt an isolationist and anti-gobalization stance, withdrawing military forces from all but a few key allies such as japan and great britian. the internet was the only thing coming out of America, and nothing save immigrants was getting in. america underwent a technological revoloution in cybernetics, robotics, and more. this technology had always existed, but suddenly americans began to put the seperate private industries togeather. aside from Japan and England, only russia established a trade agreement with the isolationist state. americans began looking upward, and the result of this was the eventual development of terraforming technology. Culturally america changed a bit, thinking more akin to the gilded age even the poor are wealthy by the standards of the rest of the world. For america this is an era of invention and industry, and untill the recent war, their eyes turned skyward with dreams of the stars. When russia entered the asian wars political powers in the united states began looking outward again, to old allies and potental new markets, like china they are looking to expand, not in terrority, but in influence. the world has moved on, and both china and europe are now forced to defend their conquered lands from a newly growing superpower. so far china is in an economic cold war across south america, and europe is loosing influence in africa their own precieved back yard in the US in the west and GLA in the east.
The terror wars taught america much about how to re-build a shattered nation, and that a deomcratic allied state with favorable views is prefreable to an unstable puppet state, africa has only benifeted from this. with their favorable position on the globe and long abused, but untapped recources and potental. american backed companies are investing in africa, turning it into a new breadbasket and making it staging ground for launching the world's first interplanetary colonial mission.
Now if only they can hold onto their optimistic view and not retreat back into their isolationist shell.

in it's military America relies on technology and strategic assets, it's military seperated into traditional land, sea, and air forces. america has a tradition of airpower, and it's current fighter jocks, while inexperienced, nonetheless excell in this role. on the ground america's cold fusion powered tanks, while not as powerful as china's nuclear powered models, are neither unstable, and more than a match thanks to their armor and main weapons.
America no longer uses low tech bullets in their standard weapontry, while a backup "slugthrower" is part of the standard infantry kit, the average american infantryman uses the world's first practical laser rifiles and shotguns. These weapons are cliples, silent, and simply vent heat after each shot, the disadvantage is they can melt and overheat if left on automatic for too long, and must be cleaned regularly to ensure maximum range. laser weapons are also used on tanks, but the belt cooling gatling lasers are built to avoid overheating, and can vent the heat as a secondary flamethrower-like affect.
the helicopter is a thing of the past, the american military uses silent drones and robots in battlefield support, humans remain the most effective force at pascifying an area, drones airborne and tracked fill close support roles carrying supplies, ambushing from the sky and ground, and entering kill zones to dislodge entrenched enemy troops.
The major advantage america always has is it's ability to support troops on the ground and logistics abiltiy. airstrikes, gunships, rockets, snipers, drones, and on and on. cut off from this support system american soldiers are at a major disadvantage. Special ops uses lasers without the targeting beam, and are thus invisible. American generals often have a great deal of leeway in selecting their forces and battle strategy.

Edison Eagle 15 VTOL Jet: king of the skies the Edison Eagle or E.E. 15 is a technological powerhouse capable of going into sub-orbit and breaking the sound barrier if needed. In the sky you do not hear or see an EE 15 at top speed, you see a blur coming at you, and though it takes computer targeting assistance to fire at top speed, you just die. But when slowling down an EE can switch between Jet and Gunship modes allowing it to speed in and either intercept other aircraft, or strafe large ground targets such as tanks or massed infantry, it's laser is in-effective at targeting single enemies. the disadvantage of this killer of the skies is it's pilot's stress levels. it is incredibly strainful to fly at top speed for prolonged periods. you do not trust such powerful weapons to a hackable, corruptable, computer.

Thank you.
