Aww.. fluorescent kittens!
« on: October 18, 2011, 07:04:27 AM »
http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2011/sep/11/genetically-modified-glowing-cats

It's a bit of old news but I just read it and decided to share it, in short, they introduced two genes in the overly adorable kitten, one for HIV immunity (FIV in the case of cats) and another for glowing green in the dark. Why? because if they glow then it means that the other gene, the important one, also worked.

I still can't get over how cute the fluorescent kittens are. On my old computer I had a picture with green fluorescent kittens and red fluorescent mice together, but I can't seem to track it down again. On the more practical note fluorescent reporter proteins rock and I was really happy a few years back when the discoverers were finally awarded a nobel for it.

It's too bad you have to use a special light to see it.  I'd love to have a kitten that glowed in the dark (and was FIV-immune).
