You can't make this stuff up.

You just can't.

Oh E, what would you do if your child called the police on you on "Forced Labor" charges?

Callie Del Noire

He would get introduced to 'Imprisonment'. I was once grounded for nearly a year.

Good point, he's probably a spoiled brat.

Honestly, any kid that can't do house chores will do house chores whether he or she wants to or not.

At first I was thinking of how cute, since I thought that the kid would be like 3 or 5 years old. Then I opened the article and read how he is 11. WTF

I'd take away the gaming system, the computer access (except for homework), and the 'play outside' privilege.

I've done it before, for other reasons (not doing homework), and I'll do it again.

There's a joke to be made here regarding German work ethic stereotypes.

I don't know that I'm the one to make it, but it's there.

I wonder if the kid has Reactive Attachment Disorder.
I ask because an adopted member of my family as RAD that sounds exactly like something he would have done.

I haven't a clue what that means.

I can't link to any sites about RTA - but basically Reactive Attachment Disorder is an inability to form bonds with those close to you. Often they remain very social with those they do not know, and are sometimes seen as social butterflies, but they have trouble forming any kind of meaningful bonds with family, pets, etc. and do not really have very many "close" friends. Behavioral symptoms include attitude, threats (against others and themselves), and blowups over the most trivial of things.

In the case of this family member, his birth mother took him home from the hospital and never fed him or even changed his diaper and basically was just waiting for him to die, his birth grandmother called CPS and saved his life, but that early life rejection by the mother who was suppose to love him is likely what triggered it in him.

Put the kid up for adoption. He doesnt like it at my place, he can try others. Id be done with him.

It wouldnt get that far if I had kids, 'cuz they'd be smart about not calling the cops on something so trivial as doing chores.

The thing Im furious about is that the cops went through with the whole damn thing...

It actually just said that the cop talked to him on the phone - which probably means the equivalent of a 911 dispatcher over here.  I've heard some pretty hysterical 911 calls (like the lady who called because Burger King wouldn't serve her a Big Mac, and the guy who wanted a police escort to a rap concert so he could avoid traffic).

LOL - my favorite 911 call was when someone called asking how much trouble he could get in for the marijuana plants he was growing. The dispatcher asked him if he had a medical card, and he told the dispatcher no, he was growing them to sell. Police came, and sure enough, he had marijuana plants. Guess he found out how much trouble he could get it, so it wasn't a wasted call ...

OMG if my kid called the cops on me for making him clean up after himself I would give the cops a reason to be there! LOL You know, year hear about this kind of thing from time to time, kids calling the cops with accusations of abuse over simple parenting and it never ceases to amaze me.

It doesn't sound like the cops actually showed up.  I'm willing to bet that the cop and the mom had a '*sigh* Kids...' exchange, and then the kid had his butt handed to him (or was hopefully grounded with even more chores!) after the phone was hung up.

Parents decided they wanted to be their kids' friends as well as their parents, even though that just isn't possible.  I can't entirely blame them now the responsibility for raising them, as well as the blame for whatever goes wrong in their lives will be placed solely on them.  When even a child's grandparents, aunts, uncles, and the like have absolved themselves of any responsibility towards their kin, what can a parent do? They're damned if they do, damned if they don't.  This is the dark side of the individualistic society we've created.

I'm not so sure it's completely impossible, if done the right way.  Mr. Oniya and I always treated the little Oni as a little person, not some strange creature that was outside of the rules of polite society.  We never talked down to her (no 'ickle widdle sweetums'), and if she asks a question, we try to answer in a way that she can understand (although explaining the catheter ad took some fast thinking!)  I still cringe when my roommate uses baby talk to her cat.  >_>

I agree with Oniya, sometimes the best thing you can do for a friend is tell them they're wrong.

I can't disagree.  The problem is that the kid when comparing him/herself to his/her peers may not see it that way.  As much as everyone is supposed to raise their own kids by themselves, the village will play its part whether it wants to or not.  Another translation/interpretation of Hillary Clinton's favorite African proverb is actually that "it's the village that raises the child".

Human beings are social animals, we more often conform to meet the expectations of our friends, reinforced by our friends approval, than actually think for ourselves. I think I can agree in this respect.
