The first time I heard that song was live in concert, and it was awesome!  Have you heard You Ruined Everything?  He wrote it about his child :)

The Importance of being Idle- Oasis.

This is the one and only song by the Gallagher brothers that I like. This song just has my whole philosophy written over it and the video has to be one of the best ever. First time I heard the saw I just sat up and said 'WOW who's that' I couldn't believe it when I found out it was Oasis , I felt so dirty and unclean, took me several days before I'd admit to myself that I liked the song and when I saw the video I was hooked.

(And can you think of a more fun funeral? That's how I want to be buried)

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=sv0_bFpeLI8

I sold my soul for the second time
Cos the man, he don't pay me
I begged my landlord for some more time
He said "Son, the bills waiting"

My best friend called me the other night
He said "Man, are you crazy?"
My girlfriend told me to get a life
She said "boy, you lazy"

But I don't mind
As long as there's a bed beneath the stars that shine
I'll be fine
If you give me a minute
A mans got a limit
I cant get a life if your hearts' not in it

I don't mind
As long as there's a bed beneath the stars that shine
I'll be fine
If you give me a minute
A mans got a limit
I cant get a life if my hearts' not in it

I lost my faith in the summertime
Cos it don't stop raining
The sky all day's as black as night
But I'm not complaining

I begged my doctor for one more line
He said "Son, words fail me"
It ain't no place to be killing time
But I guess I'm just lazy

I don't mind
As long as there's a bed beneath the stars that shine
I'll be fine
If you give me a minute
A mans got a limit
I cant get a life if my hearts' not in it

Probably the only thing worse than being out sick from work is, still feeling unwell, having to go BACK to the job you don't even like. Given this, it's no wonder that I'm listening to Jim Croce sing "The Steadily Depressin', Low-down Mind-messin' Workin' at the Car Wash Blues!"

Well, I had just got out from the county prison
Doin' ninety days for non-support
Tried to find me an executive position
But no matter how smooth I talked
They wouldn't listen to the fact that I was a genius
The man say, "We got all that we can use."
Now I got them steadily depressin', low down mind messin'
Working at the car wash blues

Well, I should be sittin' in an air
conditioned office in a swivel chair
Talkin' some trash to the secretary
Sayin', "Here, now mama, come on over here."
Instead, I'm stuck here rubbin' these fenders with a rag
And walkin' home in soggy old shoes
With them steadily depressin', low down mind messin'
Workin' at the car wash blues

You know a man of my ability
He should be smokin' on a big cigar
But till I get myself straight I guess I'll just have to wait
In my rubber suit a-rubbin' these cars

Well, all I can do is a shake my head
You might not believe that it's true
For workin' at this indoor Niagara Falls
Is an undiscovered Howard Hughes
So baby, don't expect to see me
With no double martini in any high-brow society news
Cause I got them steadily depressin', low down mind messin'
Workin' at the car wash blues
So baby, don't expect to see me
With no double martini in any high-brow society news
Cause I got them steadily depressin', low down mind messin'
Workin' at the car wash blues
Yeah I got them steadily depressin', low down mind messin'
Workin' at the car wash blues

Because of the sillyness that Bliss posted above, I'm now listening to something that was linked on that page... Why is the Rum Gone?

I've been to a few parties like that. It invariably happens just minutes after its too late to buy more booze when it's discovered that your favorite is gone.

The Black Rider - (entire album) - Tom Waits

"November's got me tied to an old dead tree,
Get word to April to rescue me."

OK, it's not November, but it FEELS like it here...so this is an appropriate choice today.

There is still achill in the air

Jimmy Buffet Songs you know by heart.

I was out cleaning up the yard and the wind was whipping and I thought of my trip to Key West and the wind that was a blowin was warm and serene.

I'm ready for warm weather and Buffet will usher it in!

"Vicarious", by Tool

Eye on the TV
'cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavour
It happens to be like;
Killed by the husband
Drowned by the ocean
Shot by his own son
She used the poison in his tea
And kissed him goodbye
That's my kind of story
It's no fun 'til someone dies

Don't look at me like
I am a monster
Frown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie
Into the TV
Stare like a zombie
While the mother
Holds her child
Watches him die
Hands to the sky crying
Why, oh why?
'cause I need to watch things die
From a distance

Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all need it too, don't lie

Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?

We won't give pause until the blood is flowing
Neither the brave nor bold
The writers of stories sold
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing

I need to watch things die
From a good safe distance

Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same so
Why can't we just admit it?

Blood like rain come down
Drawn on grave and ground

Part vampire
Part warrior
Carnivore and voyeur
Stare at the transmittal
Sing to the death rattle

La, la, la, la, la, la, la-lie

Credulous at best, your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men.
Pull your head on out your hippy haze and give a listen.
Shouldn't have to say it all again.
The universe is hostile. so Impersonal. devour to survive.
So it is. So it's always been.

We all feed on tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire

Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I

I found this kind of ironic since, reportedly, Charlton Heston died today.  But I won't believe it until I can get that flintlock rifle out of his cold, dead hand.

George Winston - Corrina, Corrina

- (Random video of someone walking their dog, set to this song; pardon the incidental sounds)

This is an instrumental piece, as so much of George Winston's work is. I first came across him when still in high school, when among several other CDs purchased when joining Columbia House, I figured I'd try his CD Forest because I wanted to expand my musical horizons - and, frankly, because I thought the cover was pretty, and I knew I'd liked his performance of Vince Guaraldi's work.

Each of Winston's CDs have a distinct flavor, to me, and therefore appropriate settings for listening, or moods that they instill in me. Forest is harder keystrikes, more indie piano work. This piece, though, comes from his album Summer, and draws out in me a sense of peace, of things being right, of dust settling and warm winds from across a slowly ripening plain cooling my sunwarmed skin. Everything about the songs on this CD (It has now shuffled around to the first track, "Living in the Country" has an air of unhurried exploration of someplace half-known, woodsy and wild and sunlit.

Ok, deep breath, Ani is someone that my g/f and i both have in common musically, she's more of a rocker and i'm more of a raver i guess you could say... anyways, things are kind of fragile between us right now and there are those times when you just start looking a little too closely at things and looking for ways to hurt yourself and listening to songs that make you sad is probably more healthy then sticking pins and needles through your skin... maybe not as fun, but less freaky... at least i hope so.  Anyways, i just sort of put this on, needing some sort of perspective... and it made me sad that it would be from my g/fs point of view.  It makes me realize even more, how lucky i am and how hard i want to work at making this work between the two of us.

"Two Little Girls" by Ani DiFranco

you were fresh off the boat from virginia
i had a year in new york city under my belt
we met in a dream
we were both 19
i remember where we were standing
i remember how it felt
2 little girls growing out of their training bras
this little girl breaks furniture, this little girl breaks laws
2 girls together
just a little less alone
this little girl cries wee wee
all the way home

you were always half crazy, now look at you baby
make about as much sense as a nursery rhyme
love is a piano dropped out a four story window
and you were in the wrong place at the wrong time

i don't like your girlfriend, yeah i don't like her
never seen one of your lovers do you so much harm
i loved you first and you know i would prefer
if she didn't empty her syringes into your arm

here comes little naked me padding up to the bathroom door
to find little naked you slumped on the bathroom floor
so i guess i'll just stand here with my back against the wall
while you distilled your whole life down to a 911 call

so now you bring me your bruises
so i can oh and ah at the display
maybe i'm supposed to make one of my famous jokes that makes everything ok
maybe i'm supposed to be the handsome prince who rides up and unties your hands
or maybe i'm supposed to be the furrow-browed friend who thinks she understands

here comes little naked me padding up to the bathroom door
to find little naked you slumped on the bathroom floor
so i guess i'll just stand here with my back against the wall
while you distilled your whole life down to a 911 call

Within Temptation - Stand my Ground

a very powerful song, filled with all of my favourite instruments. This was Evanescence before Evanescence was...these guys have as much potential as Nightwish. She has a beautiful look and an amazing voice. And these words are words which I shall live by forever.

I can see
when you stay low nothing happens
Does it feel right ?

Late at night
things I thought I put behind me
haunt my mind

I just know there's no escape now
once it sets it's eyes on you
but I won't run, have to stare it in the eye

Stand my ground, I won't give in
No more denying, I gotta face it
Won't close my eyes and hide the truth inside
If I don't make it, someone else will
Stand My Ground

It's all around
getting stronger, coming closer
into my world

I can feel
that it's time for me to face it
can I take it?

Though this might just be the ending
of the life I held so dear
but I won't run, there's no turning back from here

Stand my ground, I won't give in
No more denying, I gotta face it
Won't close my eyes and hide the truth inside
If I don't make it, someone else will
Stand My Ground

All I know for sure is I'm trying
I will always stand my ground

Stand my ground, I won't give in (I won't give in)
I won't give up (I won't give up)
no more denying, I got to face it
won't close my eyes and hide the truth inside
if I don't make it, someone else will

Stand my ground, I won't give in
No more denying, I gotta face it
Won't close my eyes and hide the truth inside
If I don't make it, someone else will
Stand My Ground.

Something I wish I could explain...but I cannot.  Therefor, mine is but to try.

I've been on my WoW kick.  There's a character who is my forsaken Tragic Victim.  Sometimes I play her as if she is unaware of her death, and change, and thus ends up horribly beaten and traumatized when she tries to help the wrong side, and her lack of embracing of what she has become tends to make the more 'we're dead and pissed and hate everyone' sorts treat her just as badly.  Sometimes I play her fully aware of what has happened to her, without the full realization of the enormity of her wronging.

She was a church foundling who grew to be too beautiful for her peers to tolerate, so they sent her to where perhaps that inadvertent beauty might help lift spirits, but given the area that became the Sepulcher, that didn't work out.  Her first physical experience was a raping by a brigand who was carrying the Undeath plague, and she in turn caught it and died from it.  She had been, for lack of a better term, an 'Esmarelda' - though not gypsy-looking by hue, she had the long, black, curled hair, the very hourglass figure, was lush of bosom, all the standard things you'd expect of someone who would end up getting a 'happy ever after' ending.  Her parents were poor stupid farmers from Westfall who abandoned her at the church because she was Yet Another Mouth that they couldn't afford.  She always did what she was told, never had an ego, always meant well, and died in the most ignoble, demeaning way possible...and instead of a blissful afterlife is now in a well-preserved body that she knows is dead, her looks marred by both the breaking of her hair up to the back of the neck due to fragility and the loss of her eyes.  That she looks pretty much alive save for those traits (no exposed bones, damn it) has lead to further abuses, for being too pretty on the one hand, and being used and abused by the enemies due to her relative weakness, and through it all she does not rail against the Light, or curse those who would harm her - she blames herself for being a failure, and for not meeting the Light's standards.

She will one day have her vengeance, but it will cost her the last vestiges of her sanity.

Whenever I want to write about her, a particular song always comes to mind.

Someone's gotta hear this...
Beautiful girl,
You must've been...
a beautiful baby too...
Beautiful woman,
You must've had your
moments inside the sun...
Beautiful girl...
Beautiful stranger,
Why do you have to
walk with your head hung low,
Beautiful girl?
Your eyes are mockingbirds inside a gilded cage
Your life's a silent movie that I haven't even heard for ages
Tell me everything, someone's gotta hear this
beautiful thing...
Beautiful mother, frozen in ice,
I've waiting for you to grow up for my whole life...
Beautiful girl...
Your eyes are mockingbirds inside a gilded cage
Your life's a silent movie that I haven't even heard for ages
Tell me everything, someone's gotta hear this
Beautiful thing...
Beautiful...
So beautiful...

Poe, Beautiful Girl

(someone posted a youtube vid of Hayden Panettiere, with the song as the background.  Perhaps I'll write up my imagined video to go with the song, if I can keep my focus...)

"Thirteen" by Big Star. It's about, er, being thirteen, a condition with which most people who are thirteen or over can identify.

Won't you let me walk you home from school?
Won't you let me meet you at the pool?
Maybe Friday I can
Get tickets for the dance
And I'll take you

Won't you tell your dad get off my back?
Tell him what we said 'bout "Paint it Black"
Rock and roll is here to stay
Come inside now, it's OK
And I'll shake you

Won't you tell me what you're thinking of?
Would you be an outlaw for my love?
If it's so then let me know
If it's no then I can go
I won't make you

This has spawned many conversations with Beastgirl and brings back many memories of the time.
It was written in 1979, released on an LP (remember them?), in 1980 and unfortunitely it is still as relavent today as it was then.

If anyone doesn't know about JimCarroll, google him, he has an interesting story to tell....http://www.catholicboy.com/intro.php

PEOPLE WHO DIED - Jim Carroll Band

Teddy sniffing glue he was 12 years old
Fell from the roof on East Two-nine
Cathy was 11 when she pulled the plug
On 26 reds and a bottle of wine
Bobby got leukemia, 14 years old
He looked like 65 when he died
He was a friend of mine

Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends, and they died

G-berg and Georgie let their gimmicks go rotten
So they died of hepatitis in upper Manhattan
Sly in Vietnam took a bullet in the head
Bobby OD'd on Drano on the night that he was wed
They were two more friends of mine
Two more friends that died / I miss 'em--they died

Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends, and they died

Mary took a dry dive from a hotel room
Bobby hung himself from a cell in the tombs
Judy jumped in front of a subway train
Eddie got slit in the jugular vein
And Eddie, I miss you more than all the others,
And I salute you brother/ This song is for you my brother

Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends, and they died

Herbie pushed Tony from the Boys' Club roof
Tony thought that his rage was just some goof
But Herbie sure gave Tony some bitchen proof
"Hey," Herbie said, "Tony, can you fly?"
But Tony couldn't fly . . . Tony died

Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends, and they died

Brian got busted on a narco rap
He beat the rap by rattin' on some bikers
He said, hey, I know it's dangerous,
but it sure beats Riker's
But the next day he got offed
by the very same bikers

Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends, and they died

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, "The Weeping Song".

Go son, go down to the water
And see the women weeping there,
Then go up into the mountains
The men, they are a-weeping too

Father, why are all the women weeping?
They are weeping for their men.
Then why are all the men there weeping?
They are weeping back at them.

This is a weeping song
A song in which to weep
While all the men and women sleep
This is a weeping song
But I won't be weeping long

Father, why are all the children weeping?
They are merely crying son
O, are they merely crying, father?
Yes, true weeping is yet to come

This is a weeping song
A song in which to weep
While all the men and women sleep
This is a weeping song
But I won't be weeping long

O father tell me, are you weeping?
Your face seems wet to touch
O then I'm so sorry, father
I never thought I hurt you so much

This is a weeping song
A song in which to weep
While we rock ourselves to sleep
This is a weeping song
But I won't be weeping long

This song somehow tattooed my brain with an irrevocable impression; the Tabernacle in Atlanta, the only time I've been lucky enough to see Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds in concert; a moment undiluted by filters of angst, guilt, or self-consciousness.  It has a sing-songy rhythm and roll that is atypical of Cave's music; he's more of a dark-balladeer meets piano-man in the bar/lounge outside of Purgatory.  But the low, surreal, and driving hum of it is hypnotic to me, lulls me into this dry-smiling, placid acceptance of some of the rationalizing madness that mankind needs-- the madness that lets us accept rather than forget our imperfect reason, imperfect hearts, and fractured, atrophied souls, and to do so with a smile.

If I could tell the world just one thing
It would be that we're all OK
And not to worry 'cause worry is wasteful
And useless in times like these
I won't be made useless
I won't be idle with despair
I will gather myself around my faith
For light does the darkness most fear
My hands are small, I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken
Poverty stole your golden shoes
It didn't steal your laughter
And heartache came to visit me
But I knew it wasn't ever after
We'll fight, not out of spite
For someone must stand up for what's right
'Cause where there's a man who has no voice
There ours shall go singing
My hands are small I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
I am never broken
In the end only kindness matters
In the end only kindness matters
I will get down on my knees, and I will pray
I will get down on my knees, and I will pray
I will get down on my knees, and I will pray
My hands are small I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken
My hands are small I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken
We are never broken
We are God's eyes
God's hands
God's mind
We are God's eyes
God's hands
God's heart
We are God's eyes
God's hands
God's eyes
We are God's hands
We are God's hands

The Decemberists - Sons and Daughters

When we arrive
Sons & daughters
We'll make our homes on the water
We'll build our walls aluminum
We'll fill our lives with cinnamon now

These currents pull us 'cross the border
Steady your boats
Arms to shoulder
'till tides are pulled
Hold our grounds
Making this cold harbor now home

Take up your arm
Sons and daughters
We will arise from the bunkers
By land, by sea, by dirrigible
We'll leave our tracks untraceable now

When arrive
Sons and daughters
We'll make our lives on the water
We'll build our walls aluminum
We'll fill our mouths cinnamon

When we arrive
Sons and daughters
We'll make our homes on the water
We'll build our walls aluminum
We'll fill our mouths cinnamon
(when we arrive sons and daughters
We'll make our homes underwater
When we build our walls of aluminum
We'll fill our mouths with cinnamon)

Here all the bombs fade away
Here all the bombs fade away
Here all the bombs fade away
Here all the bombs fade away

I'm listening to this as part of a fanmix someone made for Mal Reynolds; also known as the Captain of Serenity on Firefly. In terms of that, I find this to be an interesting treatment of travel and leaving something/someplace old and broken in the throes of terrible war, moving with family toward a place of uncertain hope.

"Open Your Eyes," Snow Patrol.

(Edited to embed video/music.)

I thought, for sure, that I'd hate this band.  But this song still gets me... I got hooked on it after watching a show that, sadly, didn't complete its first-season run-- "The Black Donnellys".

I've formed a couple of my own theories on the lyrics, but primarily I think that it's about escape; not self-destruction, but a self-awakening, and having the need to pull someone loved out of the same mire that the writer's escaped.

God-- I mean, wouldn't it be something to have someone be honest with, to draw us out of the mire of this cloud of madness that we surround ourselves with and just help us find some kind of peace with which to face our lives?  It's simple, uplifting, and much better when heard, not read.

*

All this feels strange and untrue
And I won't waste a minute without you
My bones ache, my skin feels cold
And I'm getting so tired and so old

The anger swells in my guts
And I won't feel these slices and cuts
I want so much to open your eyes
'Cause I need you to look into mine

Tell me that you'll open your eyes
Tell me that you'll open your eyes
Tell me that you'll open your eyes
Tell me that you'll open your eyes

Get up, get out, get away from these liars
'Cause they don't get your soul or your fire
Take my hand, knot your fingers through mine
And we'll walk from this dark room for the last time

Every minute from this minute now
We can do what we like anywhere
I want so much to open your eyes
'Cause I need you to look into mine

Tell me that you'll open your eyes...

All this feels strange and untrue
And I won't waste a minute without you

Nobody knows me at All by The Weepies

When I was a child everybody smiled, nobody knows me at all
Very late at night and in the morning light, nobody knows me at all

Now I got lots of friends, yes, but then again, nobody knows me at all
Kids and a wife, it's a beautiful life, nobody knows me at all

And oh when the lights are low
Oh with someone I don't know

I don't give a damn, I'm happy as a clam, nobody knows me at all
Ah, what can you do? There's nobody like you. Nobody knows me at all

I know how you feel, no secrets to reveal, nobody knows me at all
Very late at night and in the morning light, nobody knows me at all
Nobody knows me, nobody knows me, nobody knows me at all

I love just the lilting feel of the music, but the lyrics in specific are to me the eternal story of the feeling of alienation in one's own skin, of feeling unnoticed or misunderstood, of having bits and parts unrecognized inside... and then finding someone who doesn't know you so VERY thoroughly that all those parts can be brought into the light again.

Into Your Arms
by
The Lemonheads
--------------
I know a place where I can go when I'm alone
Into your arms whoa into your arms I can go
I know a place that's safe and warm from the crowd
Into your arms whoa into your arms I can go
And if I should fall
I know I won't be alone
Be alone anymore

I know a place where I can go when I'm alone
Into your arms whoa into your arms I can go
I know a place that's safe and warm from the crowd
Into your arms whoa into your arms I can go
So if I should fall
I know I won't be alone
Be alone anymore

I know a place where I can go when I'm alone
Into your arms whoa into your arms I can go
I can go...

Sorry.  This one's not much, visually, but although I get a giggle out of the 1980-lightshow-hoveround-fogmachine live version, this one's far better.

Gary Numan, "Down in the Park" (Resonator remix).

Down in the park
Where the Machmen meet
The machines are playing `kill-by-numbers'
Down in the park with a friend called `Five'

I was in a car crash
Or was it the war?
Well, I've never been quite the same
Little white lies like "I was there"

Come to "Zom-Zom's", a place to eat
Like it was built in one day
You can watch the humans
Trying to run

Oh, look, there's a rape machine
I'd go outside if it looks the other way
You wouldn't believe
The things they do

Down in the park
Where the chant is "Death, death, death"
Until the sun cries morning
Down in the park with friends of mine

"We are not lovers
We are not romantics
We are here to serve you"
A different face but the words never change
