Axiom -- .oO^Oo. -- {OOC Musings}
« on: July 16, 2011, 01:01:53 AM »
Please remember, at all times, that the main RP concerning Axiom is to remain PG-13 in content.  If you are an approved member, and wish to establish an adult-content side story-arc, you may PM me, ClockworkShadow, for my rules/guidelines concerning this.  Hard set rule:  automatons, in the true spirit of steampunk and clockwork punk, will not ever be capable of intimacy with a human... even with sentience taken into consideration.

This RP world involves elements of: steampunk and clockwork punk (complex gears and cogs); a splash of cyberpunk (complex, automatonic implants, artificial blood, etc.); logic & chaos; lifestyle D/s involving automaton/human interaction; ascetic buddhism; metaphysics & mysticism; feudal/imperial-era conflict; quantum physics.

Welcome to the Axiom -- .oO^Oo. -- {OOC Musings} thread!  This is for anything and everything OOC concerning those playing in my world of Axiom, or those who are interested in playing.  Players are encouraged to get to know each other, as much as possible, OOCly... especially the others playing on your continent of choice.  There will be one main story-arc per continent.  While each story-arc is allowed to have smaller groups comprising the whole, the main goal is to interact in two main, larger groups that will, much later, merge into a singular group.

Here is the best place to post your drafts of your profile ideas, to get feedback and proofing help.  I have a strong knowledge of spelling and grammar, if you need help.  I'm also a very interactive GM, and I love questions!  If you are an approved member capable of PMing, you are more than welcome to, alternatively, privately inquire for my personal assistance concerning Axiom and/or your character.

Please keep all casual planning, discussions, and observations here.

Welcome to Axiom

"What if you were to wake up to a different world tomorrow..."
~the Outer Limits

It has been hypothesized, in certain circles of intelligence, that alternate dimensions behave quite similarly to tectonic plates.  So imagine, if you will, that all of the various, metaphysical "anomalies" out there are moving throughout the multiverse, creeping inexorably, and occasionally colliding.  Unlike tectonic plates, however, it is hypothesized that there's less chance of a shockwave or quake from the collision, since you are not dealing with a solid, physical mass.  However, scientific law states that, for every action, there must be a reaction.  What, then, is the reaction?

The event of dimensional collision appears to create a series of "weak spots" (not unlike swiss cheese), which fluctuate in position for the duration of - in relative terms - time that the dimensions overlap each other.  These "weak spots" can appear, literally, anywhere.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to...

Axiom

— n
1.   a generally accepted proposition or principle, sanctioned by experience; maxim
2.   a universally established principle or law that is not a necessary truth

Welcome.  Please take as long as you need to collect yourself - or even to regain consciousness - and come to terms that you are no longer in the world of your birth.

Now, for common courtesy's sake, let's lay out the brass tacks - or mattresses, if you prefer.  More than likely, you've either found yourself somewhere in the continent of Nu Logikus, or the continent of Paramnar.  While there will be a bit of an adjustment period, this is definitely the better fate to endure.

If you've found yourself on one of those sparse, unpopulated islands somewhere inbetween, well... better hope for a diety of sorts to come to your rescue.  Axiom natives are terrified of the ocean, and won't be coming by anytime soon to be rescuing you.  You see, the Ocean that separates the two continents has become, over the last century, a sentient essence of true chaos, and, most of the time, it's quite violent.

The reason for this is the Maelstrom.  Curiously, and exclusively, It is attracted to bodies of salt water.  Most of the time it displays an intelligent, though almost broken, sentience, but no one actually knows anything about it.  There is no rhyme, nor reason, for its behavior, other than it will obliterate anything that tries to venture out upon the waters, or cross it by air.

About Nu Logikus
Quote

The Logical Eden?

If you've found yourself on Nu Logikus, you will encounter a population consisting of humans and remarkable, sentient automatons, which operate on a mixture of steam-power and clockwork gears.  They co-exist in a very curious circumstance: where the humans are subservient to the machines.  Curiously, the humans (developmentally comparable to our homo sapiens) seem quite content with their lot in this scenario.  It is possible that this is because, despite initial appearances, humans and automatons maintain a rather complex, cooperative arrangement.  The automatons, typically regardless their actual position, always have the final say in all circumstances, but they cooperate with a konsulatus of humans capable of determining guilt or innocence based upon an approximate standard of ethics.  There are no finite or written laws, here, but one may petition the konsulatus for consideration regarding an issue and/or dispute that may have been oversighted by an automaton Enphorkir.  Citizen-based cooperation with (and enforcement of) harmony is both encouraged and supported by the majority of the population.

Beneath the umbrella of the automaton government, a strict caste system has developed among the humans.  The most exalted position, underneath the konsulatus, is as an instructor of human knowledge, the techir.  Most courses of human instruction are something that the automatons were never able to grasp, and so great respect is bestowed to those who devote their lives to this purpose.

Next in the caste system are those whose professions are directly involved with the development and improvement of the automaton "species."  These individuals (and/or their families) are either involved in the management of the harvest and trade of raw materials (which also affects the economy), or display an affinity for energy formatir and are able to (be trained to) further improve the quality of automaton sentience.

A trade family is labelled a Tradak, and the leader of this family is titled the Merkantir (neutral to gender).

A family of energy formatirum is labelled a Konvant, and the leader of this family is titled the Magir (neutral to gender).

Beneath the previous position is that of the doktir, which covers positions ranging from human therapy to the surgical installation of artificial, automatonic improvements.

Thereafter, the last position which garners any level of respect and dignity is that of the human kraphtir of new automatons.  Automatons tend to prefer to designate themselves with this responsibility.  However, a small population of humans are born with a great talent for taking complicated, mathematically-precise schematics, then converting them into remarkable, complex units merely awaiting the gift of sentience.

The remaining 60% of the native Nu Logikus population fall under the remaining category of "general servitude."   Messengering, estate maintenance, food growth and/or harvest, and mining raw materials are examples of jobs considered "general servitude," though none of those professions account for the darker side of Nu Logikan, servant life.

Whether those consigned to this life receive decent treatment for their position, or not, depends entirely on the nature of their Mastir.  Automatons are, by default, logical creatures.  However, their sentience is directly derived only from humans, who, themselves, possess personalities/natures balancing somewhere between both logic and chaos.  Logic then becomes a variable, and the echoed vestiges of an energy formatir's personality often affects this.  Therefore, it is possible for an automaton to be ethical or cruel, and either is considered equally logical.

Note: occasionally, an automaton specimen has displayed a very rare, loose grasp of illogical/chaotic concepts and/or emotions.  The automaton's position in its existence determines whether this is encouraged to persist, or if it requires the automaton to undergo a new formatir to replace its sentience.  If the latter occurs, it does not typically bode well for the original energy formatir's fate.

The End (and Beginning) of the World, As They Knew It

The recent history of Nu Logikus began with a group of gifted doktirum, who wanted to create a set of sentient, skillful assistants.  Human assistants in their field of expertise were, at that period of time, few and far between.  A further-disheartening fact was that many of those few were then found lacking for specific traits, which complimented the expectations of a successful, respected doktir.

Quite rapidly, the doktirum succeeded in their experimental efforts, and even surpassed their own expectations.  Though, their ingenuous, automatonic assistants would eventually come to understand that their position with the doktirum offered no room for further improvement, once they had excelled at the reason for their creation.  Logically, they developed an emotion akin to dissatisfaction with each (and every) doktir Mastir in that group.  The automatonic assistants had, during their servitude, recorded detailed journals notating various aspects that they wished to improve upon.  However, the human doktirum were quite satisfied with the quality of their assistants, and so they saw no reason to implement any of those documented observations.

The automatonic assistants decided to remove their selves from their Mastirum, and pursue the research and implementation of the improvements they desired on their own terms.  Soon enough, however, they encountered one particular obstacle that they could not overcome: recreating the sentience they were gifted with.  So, they sought out their creators, and employed them to fill in the undesirable gaps preventing the successful execution of their ingenuity.  It was the beginning of a marvelous, if initially backward, relationship.

Working together, automaton and human produced the next "generation," which were built to repair every flaw the first automatons had perceived in their selves.  This next generation, proving to excel far beyond their "parent" automatons, then perceived their own flaws that they desired to improve upon.  A great, unending chyklos had been set into perpetual motion.

As the orusum passed, there was one obstacle that remained persistent, regardless each new generation of automatons produced.  They were never able to learn how to humanize their selves.  Eventually, it was unanimously decided, among both automatons and humans, that a distinction would be for the betterment of both "species," and that the cooperation with - and employment of - the human species was a much preferrable medium to a relatively minor predicament.

Proportions of Mass, and Magnitude

About 60% of the Nu Logikus landmass has been developed into a incredible, expansive populous named Mena's Gasir.  It cannot be called a city or metropolis (a relatively modern term), because there is no evidence of what an Earth-native would call modern (or futuristic).  Instead, the entirety of this massive, civilized expanse bears distinct, architectural resemblances to Earth's Victorian era.  To further affirm that this is not a metropolis, the only methods of transportation are by foot, bestia-operated carriage, a steam/clockwork-operated carriage, or by acquiring a tamed bestia capable of supporting a rider's weight.

It would take many calendar chyklos, gauged by the orbit of the largest of their three moons, Mena (the other moons are named Mensir and Lunik), to travel from one margin of Mena's Gasir to the other.

The remaining 40% of the Nu Logikus landmass is scattered with various settlements appearing more like they were borrowed from Earth's Old West era.  These settlements rarely fall under the jurisdiction of automatonic Enphorkirum, though they still typically adhere to the same policies regarding automaton-human relations, and enforcing citizen harmony.  Occasionally, though, one may find that humans and automatons interact on equal terms instead of master-servant, and - only in the most rural and smallest of settlements - one may encounter a human whose automaton still serves them, instead.  If one is able to make the very long journey to visit such a settlement, they would likely find some of the most intricate and unique automatons of all.

Note: Tradir-children of Tradakum often participate in orus-long trade routes, which leave Mena's Gasir and periodically visit various settlements in a pre-designated order before returning to the populous.  These tradirum are usually honorable about fairly dividing the settlements among each other.

Putting One's Face On...

The human citizenry of Nu Logikus dress in a style that an Earth-native might identify as a mix between Old West, Victorian and Renaissance eras.  Higher-caste, male clothing might, for example, consist of a striking tunic and/or vest, or doublet, paired with breeches, stockings, and low-heeled, polished shoes.  Females are often seen wearing the same clothing as men for day-to-day, common activities, for - unlike any of these eras on Earth - women are treated equally to men in all positions (whether for good, or ill).    However, the higher-caste-positioned women will also indulge their selves in exquisitely-tailored, floor-length dresses (of a similar era-mix) for special occasions, dances, and other celebrations.  Humans of either gender, who have found their lot to be in the lower castes, merely share the same, shoddy quality clothing, as they can afford nothing else: a (sometimes belted) tunic, breeches and (occasionally) low-quality boots made from tanned bestia skins.

Manipulative Development, and Current Limitations

Though every human native to Axiom can typically sense a variety of energies, and eventually master more than one formatir, a particularly curious trend has emerged among those who call Nu Logikus their home.  Most of these Nu Logikirum seem to assign their selves to one of the four base elements, and then display a remarkable grasp for the mastery thereof.  Sometimes, they can partially master other "beginning" level elements, but there is always a persistently-apparent skill difference.  Nu Logikirum, whose families are Konvantum, are the only humans who can sense the libir formatir as well as their own, specific elemental affinity.  Of them, maybe 30% will ever truly master it enough to learn how to instill an automaton with sentience.  It would seem that the Nu Logikan population is completely unaware of any of the other forms of energy formatir.

About Paramnar
Quote

The Other Side (of the Great Wall)...

No one knows how long the two continents of Axiom have actually existed in their present positions, if only because neither is aware that the other exists.  However, it has been long enough for two truly separate "worlds" to evolve, which are entirely divorced of any influence from each other.  On Paramnar, Axiom is called Gaeamnar .  The continent has an actual governing body - the imperial Param - and an unofficial governing body, which is a network of Monaznari.  The population of the Paramnari are, their selves, divided into three bodies: those integrally involved, whether by prestige or servitude, at the Param's temple (Ikaoi Taesa), those whose lives are bound to any of the multitude of clans populating the continent, and those who, whether voluntarily or involuntarily, bear a fate integrally twined as an Idaeo'an in a Monaznar.  Those who have sworn their lifebound oath to one of the Monaznari, in striving to attain Param Idaeo, are zealously revered (regardless their gender) by the rest of the citizenry, including the Param and the paramdar/paramrei.

The Paramnarma language is far more fluid than that of Nu Logikus, which might be attributed to the fact that their culture has developed around the collective pursuit and nirvana of Param Idaeo.  Perspectively-speaking, Paramnar is a magnificent balance of the Earth concepts of ascetic Buddhism, pure metaphysics/mysticism and quantum physics.

As such, the entire culture is collectively devoted to the monaznaoi of various masteries of energy manipulation (called "daomasu").  It has been stated that any human native of Axiom has the ability to, at the least, sense various energies and perform simpler applications thereof.  However, the Paramnari are typically born with the ability to sense every potential mastery, and sub-mastery of energy daomasu that presently exists.  This distinction often sets a par that distinguishes the remarkable differences in human development - between the continents - at a very early age.

To best describe the "world" of Paramnar, imagine stepping back into Earth's ancient, Imperial China, Japan, and other, asian territories; China's being an era enriched with cultural development between late BC to the early 1900's, and Japan's being an age of monumental figureheads - such as Oda Nobunaga - existing between mid-1800s to mid-1900s. Other historical figures include Sima Yan of the Jin Dynasty, the legend of Sun Tzu, and Genghis Khan, to only name a few.  Now, mix that with the most magnificently twisted hypotheses in quantum physics, coupled by the untold possibilities stretching far beyond the reach of any known mathematics or science, and the incredible mysticism lying forever buried and untold with the true druids of Old Erin.  The true potential of this continent's population has been barely tapped, and yet a large percentage of them learn to excel at most of the known aspects of energy daomasu with a finite degree of expertise.

Now, you might surmise that, with the continental population sharing such a degree of sensitivity to the various daomasu, this would invite a harmonious cooperation to settle, as if a great mantle of peace, upon the collective shoulders of the Paramnari.  Instead, it is quite the opposite.  If any one clan isn't trying to manipulate another through a laorei (often involving the trade of anything from kamoa, to sudar/surei, to their own otaorei), then there is, more than likely, a conflict of some nature not far behind.  These outrightly feudal battles are an ingrained part of their "world," though, and it has never been considered what life would be like for them without the "flavor" of constant conflict.  Many (male) Paramnari, whose fates are not bound to the Monaznari at a young age, train diligently as fighters, so that they may actively uphold their clan's honor and prestige.

Though, behind the silk screen of these great battles, and the stories of stalwart Saomarei candy-coating the bloodshed into tales of the utmost honor and bravery, there is a genuine problem now spreading across their land that even the Idaeo'suzeii have begun to take notice of.  Poverty, and starvation, are worming their way into entire clans like Earth's story of Eden's sly snake.  The reason falls at the feet of the Param, and he is entirely too besotted with his luxurious, courtly distractions to care about what goes on outside the margins of his massive temple.  Even those who are most talented with gaear and danaoi daomasu have been unable to keep up with the increased demands for tithes, and the Param's greed is greatly depleting a once-plentiful bounty.

Appearances (Can Be Deceiving): Paramnar's Standards, Rules, and Roles

Unlike the human population ofNu Logikus, Paramnarma men and women are cast into strict, specific roles.  This bears additional reference to the pre-1900 feudal and imperial eras of Earth's asian territories.

Paramnarma women have a choice of remaining in their clan as an "object" that their otaosani may very likely use in a bartering scheme, become one of the Param's numerous house surei or concubines**, or devote their self to a Monaznar as an Idaeo'an.  The lattermost option is considered honorable because it is believed that no Paramnari should be deprived of Param Idaeo, should they choose to seek it.  Additionally, the lattermost option is the closest thing to gender equality that a Paramnarma woman is likely to ever experience.

Though, perhaps, in a more positive regard, the women bound to their clans, along with the other ritualistic rules that they must abide by, may use their daomasu masteries to assist  their kin in many ways, including herbal remedies, acupuncture/pressure, massage therapy, and may also participate in tei ikaoi sessions.

There are, true to any form, the occasional women who choose to rebel, and seek an alternately independant path.  For example, they might wish to train as a Saomarei.  However, such a path will lead them to be faced with a permanent label of dishonor to their clans, and theirs will be a very difficult life fraught with much opposition and derision.

-- .oO^Oo. --

The men's positions are, perhaps surprisingly, just as strict as the women's.  Though not identified as "objects," they are instructed, from a very young age, as how to properly honor the fate they have been consigned to.  This fate is, very often, chosen for them by their parents.

If the man's fate remains with his clan, this typically involves strict training in the art of the Saomarei.  He is considered the protector, and faces permanent dishonor to himself, and his clan, if he fails to perform his duty successfully.  Another role within the clan might be weaponsmithing and/or armorcrafting.  This is a very demanding role; the man is providing for every single male fighter - there are, at least, hundreds - and the standard of quality that one is expected to maintain, and expects of their self, is extremely high.

Note:There is one "noble" family per clan, which is led by the (male)Monumao.  Upon the Monumao's death, the responsibility is passed, by blood inheritance, down to the eldest otaodar.  If, for whatever reason, the eldest otaodar has chosen the path of an Idaeo'an, then the position goes to the next-eldest otaodar in that family.  If a family is without any otaodar to assume the generational responsibility as Monumao, well... such a scenario has never occured before, but would likely spark the fire of a great conflict, indeed.

Only members from the "noble" families are ever seen at the Param's temple in a visitor's designation; the male paramdari being present to try and garner favor for their clan, and the female paramreii being present - voluntarily or involuntarily - to garner the Param's special attention.

The other fate available to a Paramnarma man brings him to the threshold of a Monaznar, where the duration of his life will be spent in monaznaoi and monaznumos.  His becomes a life of the constant pursuit of Param Idaeo, and daomasu mastery, especially the most difficult variants.  The title of Idaeo'suzei is one specific to the internal workings of the Monaznari, and, while not impossible for a normal Paramnari to learn an Idaeo'suzeima mastery, their lives are usually too busy for them to have the same focus that an Idaeo'an would, at the same task.

Note: Standard casual dress, for all Paramnari, are fine, silk wraps called ikei asao.  Idaeo'ani wear theirs belted with a simple length of rope, and clan-bound men and women use a wide, plain sash of a representative, often darker color.  Clan-bound women will, most typically, very carefully maintain an appearance and behavior that is much like the Earth's geisha.  The Param's concubines** also indulge in this practice, and their ikei asao are often delicately embroidered to exemplify their position.

Saomarei men also keep a set of masterfully-crafted armor, made of overlapping lengths of reinforced, riveted leather.  Rivets are smelted from the only metal (saokei) found on Paramnar.  This metal is entirely unique, in and of itself, and exclusive to Paramnar, and Axiom.

A Simple, Economical Note...

--There is no currency on Paramnar, and the economy is based strictly upon bartering, trading and the Param's required tithes.--

Quote
Saear Daomasu - Fire Manipulation - a beginning mastery pertaining to the base element of fire; pyrokinesis may be achieved at high-level mastery

D'aoi Daomasu - Water Manipulation - a beginning mastery pertaining to the base element of water; aquakinesis may be achieved at high-level mastery

Gaear Daomasu - Terra Manipulation - a beginning mastery pertaining to the base element of terra; terrakinesis may be achieved at high-level mastery; saear and gaear, as elements, are very closely related to each other, and often counterbalance each the other mastery

sub-mastery: Ramnaear Daomasu - Strength Manipulation - typically, this is a very minor, beginning sub-mastery, which pertains to the temporary (only) enhancement of one's own strength; duration of the manipulation may be improved with the level of mastery

Aenaoi Daomasu - Air Manipulation - a beginning mastery pertaining to the base element of air; aerokinesis may be achieved at high-level mastery; aenaoi and danaoi, as elements, are very closely related to each other, and often counterbalance each the other mastery

-- .oO^Oo. --

Saokei Daomasu - Metal Manipulation - a journeyman mastery pertaining to objects that contain a percentage of a metallic element; low- to mid-level mastery involves the extraction of quantities above 50 percent

Meilar Daomasu - Wood Manipulation - a journeyman mastery pertaining to objects that contain a percentage of wood; low- to mid-level mastery involves the extraction of quantities above 50 percent

sub-mastery: Meilaoi Daomasu - Growth Manipulation - a journeyman mastery pertaining to anything that would be the equivalent of Earth's term "flora"

-- .oO^Oo. --

Ikaoi Daomasu - Life Manipulation - a moderately advanced mastery pertaining to the ability to sense, then gently encourage, then actively redirect a human subject's natural static electricity (chi)

Keiar Daomasu - Electricity Manipulation - a moderately advanced mastery pertaining to the manipulation of electricity from various natural sources; increased mastery greatly improves how well electricity can be sensed despite the difficulty of the focal target

-- .oO^Oo. --

Seitaoi Daomasu - Spectrum Manipulation - a Idaeo'suzeima mastery pertaining to light, dark, ultraviolet, etc.

Seitaomar Daomasu - Gravitational Manipulation - a Idaeo'suzeima mastery pertaining to, essentially, telekinesis; one never manipulates the orbital motion of, i.e. a moon, but channels the essence of gravity to then apply the manipulation upon a closer object; high-level mastery of this manipulation may be applied upon one's self.

sub-mastery: Taomar Daomasu - Time Manipulation - a Idaeo'suzeima sub-mastery pertaining to the flow and passage of time, itself, as a controllable element

In Regards to the Laws of Manipulation

More Tacks and Mattresses

The very idea of manipulation is that you are changing the natural state of something, sometimes gently, sometimes not, and forcibly altering it to a status appealing more to your personal preference.  One should never expect that this may be accomplished without, at the least, a "butterfly effect" of consequences.  Consequences, like age, are a relative concept - as opposed to static - and age, itself, is merely a number.  That number does not actually generate any significant value until it is assigned to its target; this applies universally: be it an ancient ruins of a once-magnificent civilization, an annual flower that only has part of a single year to exemplify its existence in the world, or the child that displays a head-turning grasp of concepts far beyond the observer's expectations.

Even a "beginning"-level manipulation mastery will have a wide array of generated effects, consequences, and, at some inevitable point, something that pulls the rug out from under the user's feet.  How hard they hit depends on how high they "jumped," so to speak.  Even though the talent on Nu Logikus is muted in comparison to Paramnar, this applies equally and firmly to both continents' citizenry.  It's like rolling dice, or playing any game based upon percentages, for that matter.  One of those rolls is going to be the snake eyes, or the really low constitution rating; risk, however, is often the thrill, and you play with what you've been given.

The Rules... and the Risks

.oO  It is recommended that you use the Elliquiy Dicebot, to help make the values less random in determining consequences.  However, this is decidedly voluntary on your behalf.  I would appreciate a copy of any rolls sent to my ID, if you do use the bot; you may PM me for my ID.

.oO Whatever degree of manipulation consequence is incorporated into your roleplay - most especially if you choose to play by freeform standards - will wholly depend upon the following:
Oo.  Skill Ranking : Manipulation Ability -  Excepting the related, glossary terms, there are no official ranks/titles/labels that one may use to identify their level of skill, or use as a means of seeming better than someone else.  Both continents' caste systems are built around entirely different concepts, neither of which supports this form of posturing.  Realtime plot development, and the practice of a lower skill level (for any character), and/or devotion to monaznaoi/monaznumos (for Paramnari) will earn one's character their deserved acknowledgement of growth.  When a character has earned the ability to practice within a more advanced skill level, it will be determined and awarded by the GM, and/or anyone she might later deem trustworthy enough to assist in handling the responsibility.  Characters will develop at different rates, just as real people do.
Oo.  Skill Ranking Cap - As a general concept, this does not actually exist.  However, there will be a varying point - depending on the character, and their background - where they will struggle, and eventually fail, to exceed their current abilities.  This would be considered that individual's skill rank cap.  At that point, a character has the choice to accept that cap, or continue to strive to improve, despite the immense difficulty.
Oo.  Range of Consequence - The range of various things that can happen to your character, in consequence, will expand along with your skill.  However, instead of reducing the risk, it increases it.  Even the most successful manipulation, at the lowest skill level, will have some sort of backlash to recover from.  As one's skill improves, and the range of manipulative reaction grows with it, so does the variety in the severity of what may occur.  At higher skill levels, in the case of a particular failure occuring, the consequences could even be interpreted as a fate worse than death.  That is to say, if people even knew what death was.  There is a particular anomaly within the realm of Axiom, which has been hypothetically attributed to the Life (libir/ikaoi) formatos/daomasu.  This anomaly causes a human's spiritual essence, upon the loss - or irreparable destruction - of their corporeal husk, to enter a state of limbo that is comparable to omnipresence.  The essence will remain, in this state of hollow existence, until a new form is born [and/or made - concept not currently implemented].  "Energy can neither be created nor be destroyed; it can only be transformed from one state to another."
.oO  Other than the aforementioned guidelines, the range of possibilities is open to your creativity.  I'm trusting every one of my players to be mature and realistic (even harsh) with the scale of consequences.  I encourage you to give your characters something to pitfall them, which then makes the recovery process require time and effort.  An imperfect character, in my honest opinion, has so much more to offer its interactive companions.

Re: Axiom -- .oO^Oo. -- {OOC Musings}
« Reply #2 on: July 17, 2011, 12:03:51 AM »
As far as the details concerning one's manipulative abilities goes...

Guidelines for the Outworlder
So you've decided to play an Outworlder (i.e. Earth human, "fantasy creature," alien species (Klingons on Axiom o-0 ?), furry/otherkin, etc.)!

You will not have any ability to sense Axiom's specific energy signatures or be able to manipulate them.  Over realtime, you might begin to perceive a cellular level of adaptation/evolution.  However, the lapse of said realtime is likely to differ for each character.  There is no reason to specifically detail this in your profile, until/unless said adaptation/evolution begins to occur and significantly affects one's interaction with the other players.

Important Note: Please be aware that arrival on/in Axiom means that your character is, essentially, stuck there.  So if you've been habitually hopping around the various dimensions - by the courtesy of advanced technology, and/or your mathematical prowess - be prepared for a whole, new wake-up call.  There is no advanced technology on Axiom (or generated power of flight), and something in the very atmosphere, itself, has a habit of decommissioning anything foreign/alien to it.

Furthermore, in reference to this:

Quote
There is a particular anomaly within the realm of Axiom, which has been hypothetically attributed to the Life (libir/ikaoi) formatos/daomasu.  This anomaly causes a human's spiritual essence, upon the loss - or irreparable destruction - of their corporeal husk, to enter a state of limbo that is comparable to omnipresence.  The essence will remain, in this state of hollow existence, until a new form is born [and/or made - concept not currently implemented].  "Energy can neither be created nor be destroyed; it can only be transformed from one state to another."

... the same thing that defines that particular state of existence, also defines the (lack of) ability to intentionally leave the dimensional confines of Axiom.  In a way, this makes Axiom similar to "black hole;" once it has you, it (sentiently?) intends to keep you.

[[Exception: if a player wishes to remove their character permanently from Axiom, then the GM (only) will write-in a random dimensional weak spot for them to encounter.  If this same player chooses to rejoin Axiom later, they will need to create a new character.]]

An Outworlder's Suggested Profile Template
Name:

Species:

Age: (you are encouraged to be creative with the terminology, as long as it is the equivalent to some type of known cycle (lunar, monthly, yearly, etc.)

Height: (general description; may include measurements - please use centimeters as well as feet/inches)

Body: (general description; may include measurements - please use kilograms/grams as well as pounds/ounces)

Aesthetics (or Physical Description): (all the other goodies and eye-candy specifics)

World of Origin:

Worlds You Have Visited: (Are you the Travelin' Man type? :) )

Where Did You End Up?: Paramnar or Nu Logikus?  (If you get brazen, and want to deal with the chaotic Ocean-sentience, there are also the unmapped islands)

Character History:

Additional Notes:

Guidelines for the Paramnaran
It's a feudal kind of life... :)

Because of the drastic power-level differences (between Paramnaran and Nu Logikir), I feel that it's very important to be particularly specific about one's abilities in their profile.  This includes "normal" citizens.

Now, someone pointed out that I appeared to be utilizing a "merit/flaw" approach with my Paramnaran character-build.  When he called my attention to it, I saw it, and found that it appealed to me to expound upon it.  Having fond memories of (really) old-school V:tM, I think that having a freeform basis of the merit/flaw system would be a spectacular addition.

Suggestions on how to approach this:
  • All Paramnari, by default, start with a mid-range ability to sense and manipulate: Saear (fire), D'aoi (danaoi; water), Gaear (terra), Ramnaear (strength), Aenaoi (air), Saokei (metal), Meilar (wood), Meilaoi (growth).  Standard consequences, of course, apply.  Many average Paramnari also have a low-to-mid-range ability to sense and manipulate Ikaoi (life).  If your Paramnaran is straight out of this cookie mould, then the normal manipulation-consequences would easily justify the "flaws" to balance the responsibility and level of power.

You are not, however, limited from adding other flaws (to add depth and/or "flavor" to a character's personality)

  • If you are like me - and the cookie mould just isn't quite enough - then you may define specific enhancements and/or abilities that are mostly-unique to your character.  However, for each enhancement, it must, at least, have an equal counterbalance.  If you are having difficulty thinking of your own flaws - with which to counterbalance your character's special ability - then you may also opt to trade in any of the aforementioned default abilities.

Related Example: My Asaomun's general abilities are enhanced when she is directly exposed to natural Light sources (sun and moon).  To counterbalance this, her abilities are greatly weakened if she is not directly exposed to natural Light sources.  This is not an ability to manipulate the Seitaoi (spectrum), but a biological/genetic sensitivity.  When she begins her training to manipulate Seitaoi, certain aspects may change and/or be amplified (for better and/or for worse).
A Paramnaran's Suggested Profile Template
Name: (this should sound Asian, and be listed with the surname first)

Type: Paramnaran

Gender:

Age: --- taokuneii; --- sukaoii

Sukaoi of Birth: ---; --- day (this is voluntary, additional information)

Height: (general description; may include measurements - please use centimeters as well as feet/inches)

Body: (general description; may include measurements - please use kilograms/grams as well as pounds/ounces)

Aesthetics (or Physical Description): (all the other goodies and eye-candy specifics)

Clan: Clan Surname of type of Energy, listed with the Energy first: i.e. D'aoima Teisei

Role: Your identified position as a Paramnaran; it may include (is not limited to): Idaeo'an, Saomarei, Member of a specific Role-based family (Healer family), Paramdar/rei, Sudar/rei, etc.

(Oath)Bound to: (If you are a normal Paramnaran, you would list the Monaeram of your Clan; If you are an Idaeo'an, you would list the name of your Monaznar)

Beholden to: (this is an additional section for female Paramnari; it may include (is not limited to): an Idaeo'suzei at your Monaznar; your otaosan; your Monaeram; if you have been traded, to whom you were traded to: husband/Param/etc.)

Character History:

Additional Notes: (This is where you would detail out your manipulation abilities, as well as the approximate "rank" of mastery: i.e. low-mid range, mid-range, advanced, etc.  Specifics should be ironed out with the GM.  Please define/list all of your abilities, even the default ones, and/or any special enhancements/flaws.)

Guidelines for the Nu Logikir
Tick... tick... tick... whirrr...

For human Nu Logikirum, the Additional Notes section will pertain specifically to the details concerning what your primary affinity is:
  • For the average Nu Logikir, this would be one of: Ignir (fire), Lacumir (water), Terisir (terra), Etir (air).  They may also choose a secondary, much weaker sensitivity.

  • For a Nu Logikir born to a Konvant family (or who has the blood of such a family flowing in their veins, despite any kind of separation therefrom), they will choose a primary affinity, and may also include the ability to manipulate personal strength, wood and metal (these do not have their own terms, presently).  They will be able to sense all other elemental, beginning-level energies on a weaker scale.

Quote
Nu Logikirum, whose families are Konvantum, are the only humans who can sense the libir formatir as well as their own, specific elemental affinity.  Of them, maybe 30% will ever truly master it enough to learn how to instill an automaton with sentience.

Note: Automaton Nu Logikirum are entirely unable to sense or manipulate any of the known energies.  However, most automatons have the curious ability to divorce a human of their ability to move if physical contact is made.  This requires the automaton to intend to use this ability (they can touch a human normally, as well).  It appears to be untraceable to any known manipulation, and usually only applies to the enforcing of citizen harmony.

Yes, absolutely Kuje.  This thread is going to be where we smooth all those little details out.  The Profile Cache is for after you've got something that you don't expect to have to edit (until something in-play requires a modification to be written in)

Name: Lydia Skedirhus (Sketchhouse, following the same root theory for Nu Logikan terminology)
Type: Nu Logikir

Position: Design Artisan; unofficial, inter-species Ambassador

Gender: Female

Age: Young adult; about twenty Orusum

Chyklos of Birth: Unknown; Unknown day

Height: 150 cm (about 5'); 5 - 10 cm below average, female height

Physical Description: Because she didn't get much to eat while growing, she stands only five feet, which is about two inches shorter then average. However, she makes up for this by wearing boots that have a two to three inch heel. For years, her brown hair - that has blonde highlights - reached the middle of her back, and it was pinned up in ringlets. Now, though, she chopped it to her shoulders, while keeping the ringlets and tendrils, since she didn't want to spend the time to pin up her long hair every day. Like her hair, she has light brown skin. She is proud of her dark gray eyes, because it is her only feature that really stands out.

Character Biography

After being a orphan on the streets for awhile, she became a "starving artist" for many years until she finally managed to sell some of her drawings to a patron that happened to have a few, higher connections. It was these drawings that then drew the interest of the scientists and automatons, both. Only a few days later - when she was back on her usual corner - she was approached by an automaton, and asked to become someone that would help design new bodies for the future generations of the non-human species. They said that her drawings inspired the possibility of a more human-like range of motion.

Now, she works closely with the automatons by creating drawings, that are then interpreted into schematics. She has also published a few books of sketches, at the automatons' request, so that the humans may have a more personable perspective of the dominant species of Nu Logikus. It has helped to support an idea of an image of benevolence.

After her orusum of being so integrally involved with the automatons, she has learned bits and pieces of knowledge that she didn't always possess. This knowledge has led her to be unofficially involved with the Konsulatus, and she operates, on the side, as an ambassador-of-sorts between the two species.

Could you edit your post and have those linked to, as opposed to [img] tagged?  Thanks, Kuje.

I'm working on my Paramnaran character (the one who'll be the guiding force in that particular story-arc), but I will read and get back to you (and Johnny) with feedback soon.  Hopefully some of the others will come by and provide input, as well. :)

Kuje:  Also, I'd personally prefer that you matched your description to your model.  Since the model you chose for her picture has golden-brown eyes (almost like the color of rum, very pretty), you could still have her eyes be her most-striking feature... and it would be more accurate, that way?

Ok.  It's a rough draft, so comments and critiques are welcomed!

Gender: Female

Age: 19 taokuneii; 7 sukaoii

Sukaoi of Birth: 1st; 9th day

Height: 154 cm (about 5'1")

Aesthetics: skin-tone is naturally olive-tan; eyes are a consumingly-rich, grey-blue; face is a rounded heart-shape with high cheekbones; hair-tone is ebony, with blueish-violet highlights (in direct exposure to light; presumably because of her Primary energy)

Clan: D'aoima Teisei
{translation: (the) Teisei of Water}

Role: Idaeo'an

{mow ' moo   g'eye ' ahr ' mah   t'eye ' shah}
{translation: Third Shrine of (the) Terra}

Beholden to: Idaeo'suzei Neisao Maokeisu
{...   naysh ' ow   mow ' kay ' shoo}

Character History

History

It was a prosperous taokunei, and the old Param still wore the Living Ring of Ikaoi Taesa.  Little had been required of tithes, and the surplus had induced a curious, complacent lull in the otherwise-familiar, clan warfare.  Sensing foreboding in the unseen patterns, however, Idaeo'suzei Neisao Maokeisu - he, who, at only 37 taokuneii, was the soulbound guardian of the third shrine of the Terra - had left the sacred halls of his Monaznar to travel Paramnar for answers.  Unfortunately, with no clues to help him find what he sought, he wandered well into the season of Gaeamnar's slumber.

As the season of slumber gradually expended itself, and sought to establish Gaeamnar's rebirth, so he found himself in the Clan of D'aoima Teisei.  The feeling of foreboding had doggedly thickened during his travels - despite the balance of the seasons continuing, unhampered - to the point that he was physically affected, and now struggling to breathe properly.  Shortly after his arrival, he unceremoniously collapsed into unconsciousness.  Monaeram Teisei Saegao, fearing the worst, had their honored visitor brought to the home of their resident healer family: an Omonae, Teisei Ikaoima, his Beholden, Teisei Raemun, and their three children.

Teisei Ikaoima and Raemun plied their abilities upon the fallen Idaeo'suzei from the moment he was brought in, until the largest of the moons, Monaz, was at its peak.  During this entire time, their youngest child - a girl of the tender age of 3 taokuneii - would absolutely not leave the healing room, no matter how they (halfheartedly) threatened grave consequences.  The Idaeo'suzei was now breathing easier, though, and they were exhausted and physically shaking after such prolonged manipulation of the various energies that they'd needed to work with.  So the Omonae and his Beholden made the unorthodox decision to allow their seemingly-tireless, young daughter, the honor and responsibility to keep watch over the recovering Monaznar master.  As it was, however, she was already known to be a rather unusual, serious child, and she had already, undoubtedly displayed evidence of her parents' abilities.

Once her parents were confirmed to have turned-in, she had drug a stool over and used it to maneuver herself up, and onto Neisao Maokeisu's cot.  She sat, boldly and quite unceremoniously, inbetween his spaced-apart feet, with her legs folded and crossed over each other.  Having heard tales of monaznumos from her parents, and their acquaintances, she intertwined her fingers in her lap, closed her eyes, and began to pace her breathing.  The light of Monaz, as She descended across the sky, invaded through the open doorway and glass-less holes in the walls.  It rested, as a wreath of illumination, upon the small child, and a casual observer might have even claimed that she appeared to be channeling it.  Seitaoi Daomasu, however, was an Idaeo'suzeima mastery.  No child, let alone one from a simple Clan - whose Primary was the element of danaoi - should be able to sense something so advanced, and yet...

About an hourglass' turn into this child's vigilant guardianship, the Idaeo'suzei gently stirred, and then began to pull out of his recovering rest.  An incredibly-curious sensation was whispering over his skin with the most feather-light of caresses.  He blinked his eyes open, furrowing his brows as his sight adjusted to the intensity of Monaz' light.  His first thought was to question why was he so sensitive to it, of a sudden.  He vaguely remembered collapsing, and wondered if he had hit his head especially hard upon the ground.  Then, that curious sensation revisited him, and tingled its way over his arms and shoulders, then up to the crown of his scalp before dissipating.  He lips parted slightly, as he shivered in response, and he very slowly adjusted so that he could prop himself up and look around.  In the next moment, his eyes came to rest upon the tiny, vigilant figure, appearing as something incomparable, yet breathtaking, as she sat there in her wreath of moonlight.  Breathing shallowly through his mouth, he pushed himself into a sitting position and leant forward.  Then, after a few moments longer, he reached out and, so very tentatively, touched his fingertips to her cheek and jaw.

For an amateur practicing only upon what she had heard, indirectly, from her elders, she had managed to discipline herself into a rather deep trance.  So, when the fingertips of the Idaeo'suzei had touched her face, it was the first thing to break through to her awareness.  She felt Monaz' embrace gently fall away, as if a mantle sliding from one's shoulders, and she rose out of her monaznumos to open her eyes.  As soon as she did, and their eyes met, her little hands flew to her mouth, and she blinked a couple of times.  The master nodded, in recognition of something unheard, and yet absolute.  Very, very slowly, throwing away all the protocol that had been, so far, taught to her, she removed her hands from her mouth and extended them out to touch his cheeks and jaw.  In the next instant, something jolted through their bodies, and inextricably meshed their essences together.  Acknowledgement flashed between them, as they kept their eyes trained upon each other throughout this exchange and merging of natural, personal energies.  Then, moments later, she pushed herself forward to crawl closer, curling against the master's torso as he brought his arms around to embrace her protectively.  With this man, there was no protocol; he was her Idaeo'suzei, and she belonged to him.

One sukaoi later, the ancient Param - at 157 taokuneii - passed away and the Living Ring was placed upon the second finger of his eldest otaodar.  It would not be long before the reason for the Idaeo'suzei's sense of foreboding became evident.

Additional Notes:

Teisei Asaomun is able to sense and manipulate:
  • Standard Manipulations:
    • Saear Daomasu - mid-range; some training
    • D'aoi Daomasu - advanced; clan element, extensive training
    • Gaear Daomasu - mid-range; some training
    • Ramnaear Daomasu - mid-range; some training
    • Aenaoi Daomasu - advanced; extensive training
    • Saokei Daomasu - mid-range; untrained
    • Meilar Daomasu - mid-range; novice training
    • Meilaoi Daomasu - mid-range; novice training
    • Ikaoi Daomasu - mid-range; novice training
    • Keiar Daomasu - low-range; novice training
  • Special Enhancements/Abilities:
    • By incorporating Aenaoi Daomasu during deep sessions of monaznar, she can inspire Visions.  These Visions may be in the present or future, though she can never see further ahead than the approximate span of onu sukaoi.
      • Associated consequences may include: an imperative need to replenish one's own ikaoi energy by the consumption nourishing food/drink (most common); a temporary drain upon one's physical constitution, followed by the aforementioned; an involuntary loss of consciousness, later followed by the aforementioned; a temporary "coma" that may persist for up to a fortnight, later followed by either (or both) of the first two consequences.
    • Her various manipulative abilities are amplified - and the associated consequences are lessened - when she is directly exposed to a natural Light source: specifically the sun or moon.  This is not Seitaoi Daomasu, but, instead, is a curious occurence based upon a natural (genetic?) sensitivity.
      • As her abilities are enhanced by Light-exposure, so are her abilities reduced by the deprivation of a natural Light source.  Also, consequences for manipulations attempted during this circumstance are amplified, for the worse.

"maomu" means "third" (context in direct reference to one of the Monaznar, which I named "Maomu Gaearma Taesa" or "Third Shrine of (the) Terra")

To my players (old and new, alike):  Please make a note, while settling in, on if you think its a good idea to brainstorm some more numbers (mostly for temple/shrine identifications)?

Some Paramnarma numeric references:

onumu {oh ' noo ' moo} - first
deimu {day ' moo} - second
maomu {mow ' moo} - third
kunmu {koon ' moo} - fourth
gaomu {gow ' moo} - fifth
sanumu {shah ' noo ' moo} - sixth
seimu {shay ' moo} - seventh
ganumu {gah ' noo ' moo} - eighth
neimu {nay ' moo} - ninth
daoarmu {dow ' ahr ' moo} - tenth

How's that look, guys?

I was thinking, by the way... should we make a note of what a person is able to manipulate in their profiles... or is that being too specific?

It might help to avoid confusion, especially when people start displaying aspects that are personalized sub-manipulations...  I mean, it's bound to happen...

@ Kuje: Please check the Human Nu Logikan Profile Template and double check it against Lydia's profile.  Those links can go into "Additional Notes," and you need to decide what Lydia's primary Energy is.  Thanks!

Automaton rough draft ^^;;

I know I said that there wasn't a way to fully transfer a human's Libir and soul into an artificial form... and that's still, technically true.  There is, presently, no known way for one human to manipulate another's Libir essence to do so (on Nu Logikus, anyway).  However, I was thinking of Tim Burton's 9 earlier, and a concept hit me (a bit abruptly) on something that could tie to people back to their pre-automatonic history.  I've dropped tiny hints about a much more mystical life that preceded their societal evolution - like the names of the moons, and the associated name of the great Mena's Gasir.  I've also based the name of the village on the root of "refuge."

Feedback would be absolutely adored on how executable the concept might be?

Name: Proto Menamia
{proh ' toh   mehn ' ah ' mee ' ah}

Type: Nu Logikir

Species: Automaton

Position: presently, n/a; was created outside of the boundaries of Mena's Gasir

Associated Gender: Female

Age of Construct: 4 orusum

Associated Age of Sentience: young adult, between 20 and 30 orusum

Chyklos of Sentience: 9th; 3rd day

Height: 165 cm (about 5' 6")

Physical Description: Though somewhat-dulled and in disrepair, it would be obvious, to anyone, that Proto Menamia is the lovingly-kraphted mastir-piece of her creator.  Her body is made, entirely, of the finest, stain-proofed pherorganik; it must have taken most of her creator's lifetime to afford it.  Upon careful observation, one would notice that her "limbs" have been connected with ball joints, which should have once increased the smoothness of her range of motion; they desperately need to be oiled.

Upon further observation, one would find that her backplate has been installed with three steam-valves aligned along the slope of her "shoulders," and they curve, approximately parallel,  alongside her carefully-jointed spine.  Shaped to her exoskeletal shell, they connect to a miniature boiler located in the approximate region of a human's stomach.  Mould-cast, solid gears appear to have interacted in a precisely-timed fashion on either side of the underlying furnace, to operate a miniature bellows.  The air from the bellows would have pumped oxygen into the furnace, encouraging the flame therein to consume organik, and heat the boiler.  The boiler would, then, have generated the necessary pressure to operate her internal workings, as well as the gears that connected to - and seem to have worked - the bellows.  The steam therefrom would have, then, exited through the valves.

Truly, when she had been fully operative, she must have been a most magnificent sight to behold.

Character History: The elder, bent-backed human toiled and tinkered away; a tear slipped from his eye as some unknown, saddening thought occured to him.  After a moment, however, he grit his jaw, banished the terrible thought from his mind, and continued to focus on his skillful Shaping of her body.

He'd never known where he got the ability to mould metals like he did; no one else in the outlying village of Rephugim shared any talent of a similar nature.  His hands ran over each length of pherorganik, and it responded to his touch, much like wood to sandpaper; he reflected that he should have found a woman to settle with, if only to have passed his gift on to a child.  Yet one's Libir was full of regret, he also reflected; that was merely the way things were, and, in some ways, it was a twisted way of enriching one's mortal experiences.  It had not been his Fate to love any female, though; none, that is, except for her.

With the gentlest of touches, he ran his fingertips over her Shaped cheek-ridges.  She was almost ready.  Only one thing remained...

Slowly, he opened the gilt-edged, hand-carved box.  It was ancient, even older than the lady that had given it to him.  It's contents were, quite possibly, even older still.  As he parted the folds of the mysteriously soft cloth - and rubbed his fingertips over the trinket kept therein - his memory briefly caressed upon the recalled visage of the old Tradakir.

"You do not remember a time before Them, little one, but I do.  In some ways, Their coming has been for the better, but the time must come that the people Remember.  You... you will not see this time, but you will be a catalyst for its arrival.  When the time is right to use this..." She pressed the ornate box into his then-little hands before continuing, "you will know."

"Maedir Menamia..." he whispered, glancing down at the hemispherical device now resting in the palm of his hand, "You were the last of your kind.  May the future yet, someday, rebirth another in your image."  He lowered his head, eyes closed, as he paced his breathing against the pain that had increased over the years, and now wracked his physical form.  "I will Name her for you.  It is all that I can do; all that is left within me to give."

He grit his jaw as resolve for what he knew he must do took over.  For a final time, he glanced over the parchments of the Lore concerning the device, rolled them tight, and then stored them away in a carefully-hidden compartment along the inside of her "thigh."

Then he clasped the device into the place he had specially crafted for it, centered between the metal he'd shaped to represent collar bones, at the apex of her "sternum."  Once the transfer had taken place, it was written that the device would flare with an intense heat that would fuse it to her structure.  This way, it could never be removed.

For several moments, he sat there.  It was less that he was reluctant to take the final step; he just wished that he could be there to guide and to guard her.  However, she would not be without this necessity... this sacrifice.  So - with a caress that trailed down from the lovingly-polished skull, down the side of her "face," to rest, momentarily, beneath the gently-moulded chin - he dropped his hand to depress the three sections of the device in the correct order.

A blinding, opaque, green glow flashed from the device, yet he stared intently; determined that she would be the last image imprinted upon his mind.

It only took a few seconds, and yet the lapse of time was the true essence of eternal, in his perception.  He felt his Libir being succored from his body, like a newborn lamb to its mother's milk.  In his last moment, he wondered if she would ever know.

"Menamia... I've come home..."

History:  Jules' family are of the well known Ikaoi(life) Daomasu and Saokei(metal) Daomasu Masters, and among the humans, the Morgensterns could be called upper 'gentry'.  Her father, Julius, is the present Magir, being the seven-hundredth of that title.  Not all of the Morgenstern are able to manipulate Formatirum; those that do not tend to go into trade.  Jules is the third of her family history to have any true skill in working both the Ikaoi and Saokei at a near equal rate -- though the cost for such means that she often sleeps twice as long as any other formatirum master, also requiring to exercise and consume more nutrients than most.  She does not appear to age faster than any other human.  She has two younger brothers, one younger sister, and quite the range of cousins.

It is presumed that she will take her father's place as head of the family.

Age: 25

Written Description:

Rather long hair in a soft brunette is styled in an elegant coiffure that enhances her classically lovely face.  A few stray tendrils curl over one of her sculpted cheekbones. Her green gaze hold a certain fire in the eyes that seems to bely a strange detachment to all - at least for a human.

Jules' attire is nearly the best quality available, tending to be earth tones, blacks, jewel tones. Her hands appear neatly manicured with an understated elegance.  Her ears are pierced only with the smallest gems, that are often used to store extra formatirum, matching the rings upon her hands.  A top hat usually rests on top of her head, with a delicately crafted steam powered monocle, as one of many ever present gadgets.  She is fond of her dual steam revolvers, holding a Class B License to carry them.  A heavy cane-sword is often resting in her right hand.

The lady favours long frock coats with well pressed breeches or long pants with tall, neatly shined boots.  A cravat generally rests in tied in the most fashionable 'mathematical'.  At times, a book or two can be noted near, along with a half moon pair of reading spectacles enhanced with formatirum.

Here is my attempt for you, Clockwork.  I'd equate her family as 'noble' to a very, very modest barony or viscountcy as far as influence/wealth.  They'd be far more known as Formatirum Masters.

Sweet. :)  Thanks for posting it here.  I will make sure I get right on top of proofing it just as soon as I sneak in a nap.   Long day of babysitting :D

Thanks for such a marvelous effort regarding the terminology!  It shows that you took the time to have read this to such an in-depth measure.  I'm so happy ^^;;

Dear Clockwork,
I have been browsing your Final Draft, OOC musings, and Launched sites. I read over the posted characters to see what you are looking for.

Keimun Reigumon's picture is fantastic, and his background story is delightful. He's also chosen the Japan-themed continent!!!  Very well written, Lord Johnny. It gave me a much better feel for the world then I had before!

Julianne 'Jules' Morgenstern
is also delightful though she chose the other world! Which brings me to a question … Usually I ask Haloriel to proof read my stories, and vice versa. Do let us know if certain plots will be put into effect that would be diminished if we shared stories before the two worlds collided!

Teisei Asomun, whose background story is wonderful and fills me with questions … but is also cleverly crafted to not give too much away! Nicely done, Clockwork! And I am pleased you will have a character on the Japan-themed continent.

Proto Menamia's background story is so very sad! And what on earth are you hinting at??  This one is also yours, and plays on the Victorian side.

I am thinking of a young woman of Paramnar, still bound to her clan. For me, though I love the notion of Victorian gowns and lovely robots (I LOVE robots), the Kimono won. I just … couldn't resist that aesthetic and tradition.

I would like her to have skills in herbal remedies, acupuncture/pressure, massage therapy, and tei ikaoi (The Tai Chi). My goal is for her to be a Healer, and use the Ikaoi Daomasu - Life Manipulation - (a moderately advanced mastery pertaining to the ability to sense, then gently encourage, then actively redirect a human subject's natural static electricity (chi) ).

What would fascinate me, if there is a way, is for her to be able to mend things. To be able to sew up a wound in a fashion that it would not scar, and would heal fast; to be able perhaps to likewise mend silk kimonos, perhaps organics? I did not see an energy manipulation for that sort of thing, unless I went with Meilar Daomasu - Wood Manipulation (a journeyman mastery pertaining to objects that contain a percentage of wood; low- to mid-level mastery involves the extraction of quantities above 50 percent) and sub-mastery: Meilaoi Daomasu - Growth Manipulation (a journeyman mastery pertaining to anything that would be the equivalent of Earth's term "flora") which would have the added benefit of adding to the quality of her herb and kitchen gardens. Perhaps some day she could even learn how to mend armor, and eventually Automatons! Who knows?

I have found a picture that I just LOVE … I would really like to use it. I have not yet found answers to what the marks on her forehead are, unless they are clan-specific, and speak of her lineage or ownership.

If these basic mechanics seem to you like they will work, I will concentrate on her family and character. How much of her family are you interested in seeing? Should I populate a whole clan? Just her immediate family? A three generation family tree? With these goals and the very lovely picture, where would she fit socially? Here is the picture I found.  I used Tinypics and chose the Bulletin board code and size; please let me know if that was not the correct thing to do!

Johnny's been my most faithful participant through the creation of Axiom, before it ever became this hyper-detailed giant.  He's been very busy lately, but hopes to have to time to come back to play soon. :)  I feel quite safe to publically admit that his character (even before we worked together, in PMs, to edit in the asian themes) was a very large inspiration behind the creation and implementation of Paramnar.

You have made a more-than-ample impression that you are capable of keeping OOC and IC knowledges separate.  My admiration of you already knows no bounds, miLady.  Also, if Johnny's absence must continue (though I'm sure he wishes otherwise), I may have to adapt certain plans that I had for him to balance between myself and you, provided that you would be intrigued by such responsibility in the evolution of the plot. :)

Teisei Asomun, whose background story is wonderful and fills me with questions … but is also cleverly crafted to not give too much away! Nicely done, Clockwork! And I am pleased you will have a character on the Japan-themed continent.

<blushes profusely>

Your compliments are very heartwarming, miLady.  My interest is quite piqued, concerning your questions.  It has always been my plan to have a primary character involved in each of the two story-arcs.  And I have encountered the possible need to create profiles for a few more, secondary and tertiary, support-role characters.

Quote
Proto Menamia's background story is so very sad! And what on earth are you hinting at??  This one is also yours, and plays on the Victorian side.

"All things must end, and, from that ending, something new (and magnificent) invariably begins."

Perhaps it is not a direct quote, but it is close enough to get my point across. :)

My ideas for the sub-plots enriching the Nu Logikan story-arc are clamoring into existence much more rapidly than the ones concerning Paramnar.  Yet, curiously enough, they seem to have the potential to interact with that otherwise-entirely-separate "world."  Since you are presently in contact with Haloriel by other means, you are more than welcome to inquire of what I have shared with her, on this premise. :)

Quote
I am thinking of a young woman of Paramnar, still bound to her clan. For me, though I love the notion of Victorian gowns and lovely robots (I LOVE robots), the Kimono won. I just … couldn't resist that aesthetic and tradition.

This is also why I had to create two primary characters.  Not only is it my responsibility, as a GM, to be in the thick of each plot development, but the inspiration for these worlds - while vastly different from each other - each share a very special place in my heart.

And as for the robots... I'm a child experiencing Yule/Christmas/Hannukah every time I am around one of them, or am lucky enough to be at a convention.  I can't possibly describe the elation I experience when I even have the resources and opportunity to build one.

I had sensed we were, quite likely, birds of a feather, and this has affirmed that suspicion rather nicely. :)

Perhaps some day she could even learn how to mend armor, and eventually Automatons! Who knows?

I cut off the list of manipulations where it is because I already felt that Axiom was burgeoning into such an epic existence as to overwhelm.  This is not to say that I am not (very) interested in further expanding it if you have an idea for another sub-manipulation.  I love player-inspired additions to a theme.  That's why I've encouraged people to continue creating their own unique terminology, based upon the precepts that I used in the existing glossary. :)

I'm also a very interactive GM.  I don't just specify the guidelines and throw them out there, expecting people to sink or swim.  Nay, for I jump right in, and am as hands-on of a "swimming instructor" as each person is comfortable with. <3

As far as mending is concerned, I love the idea, and would be delighted to see what you would make of it.  Perhaps your character discovered a particular anomaly, unique to her, while she was learning the Meilar and Meilaoi Daomasui, and she found an additional aspect when she merges the abilities in a particular fashion?  If she came from a Meilarma or Meilaoima Primary clan, this could also enhance the particulars of the situation.  There are plenty of potential concepts to negotiate, that would balance this anomaly quite well.  I am very curious to see what you would make of the potential manipulation-consequences.

I have found a picture that I just LOVE … I would really like to use it. I have not yet found answers to what the marks on her forehead are, unless they are clan-specific, and speak of her lineage or ownership.

The picture is amazing.  I'll leave you with a choice: to figure out what sort of meaning the markings might have, or have me to graphic edit the picture so that she appears exactly as she is, except without the markings.  If you opt for the first choice, I would be interested to read what you come up with, and in probably implementing the concept into entire Paramnarma culture.

Quote
If these basic mechanics seem to you like they will work, I will concentrate on her family and character. How much of her family are you interested in seeing? Should I populate a whole clan? Just her immediate family? A three generation family tree?

I would like to encourage you to be as detailed with her origins and support character concepts as you would feel so inclined to contribute, my Lady. :)  In remaining with her Clan, is she Beholden to another, therein, or has she managed to escape the bonds of the Paramnarma take on marriage?  (Either is entirely viable, mind you).  Is she presently in a student and/or apprentice capacity to her family, thereby delaying the necessity of her being Beholden to someone?

Hopefully that is sufficient enough to spark another one of your lovely brainstorming processes. :)

Quote
With these goals and the very lovely picture, where would she fit socially? Here is the picture I found.  I used Tinypics and chose the Bulletin board code and size; please let me know if that was not the correct thing to do!

All Paramnari are quite skillful with energy manipulation, and tend to know, instinctively, how to keep from pushing the boundary of consequences too far.  There are, of course, always exceptions to every rule.  However, for the most part, it's a pretty static theme.  That being said, take the White Wolf merit/flaw system into consideration.  If you want to enhance her abilities beyond the average Paramnaran, then all I need you to do is legitimately balance it out. :)  There are no actual rules, or points guidelines, concerning said merits/flaws.  I trust your creative judgement. :)

While she would be expected to adhere to the same standards as any other, female Paramnaran (subservient, objectified, etc.), I see plenty of (subtle) rule-bending potential with her.  If you let me edit her picture so that her eyebrows were white (like her hair), she'd really appear to be albino.  This could have been a genetic circumstance, or a manipulation consequence.  I'll leave that choice up to you, as well.

There's also the consideration of the genetic predisposition to lose one's hair pigmentation at an early age.  Anne McCaffrey's Rowan comes to mind (I was obsessed with her books, as a teenager, and especially that series).  She could be the next generation of a particular strain... actually... what just popped in my head was that she could be one of the Param's direct relatives.  While not all of the ruling family would be predisposed to early pigmentation loss, and/or being albino, that could very easily make her that much more of a sacred individual (in their belief system), and possibly privy to particularly sensitive information...

Hmm...

I'm very curious to see where you take this. :)

Dear Clockwork,

My return post to you was SO long and SO confusing that even I couldn't follow it. I have chosen to break it up into FOUR posts.

Character Decisions
World Building Questions
World Building Answers
Everything Else

Character Decisions
I do appreciate your taking the time to walk me through this part; its so important for a character to have depth, and that means answering these little details …

As to energy Manipulations – I like your idea of her mastering a unique sub-specialty!  I will go wrestle with your naming rules and see if I can come up with a name you like. I am so glad you like the idea of her mending things! I will look up your Meilarma or Meilaoima clan and I am sure to use that idea, too.

I have several ideas in mind for her consequences!
First, what I'd like to do is to have some of what she's mending get into her fingers. It would  take a little bit heal up; not too long, perhaps a d3 (one three sided die) hours or so. That will make for really good descriptions and cause her to hesitate, not just indiscriminately fix it all.
Second, I will make her develop a sensitivity to and fondness for whatever/whoever she heals. If she fixes a Kimono, she doesn't -want- to give it back, and she'll be furious if it is mistreated or torn again!
Third, if she tries to mend too many items different in nature from each other too close together (while the other substance is still floating about her body), she has a chance of 'mixing' the elements … she might get a swath of red silk kimono in the middle of your battle armor, or a touch of plant stem in your arm! Eewww! But fun.
I have not yet worked out 'critical fail' consequence or an 'over channeling' consequence, but I definitely will have at least a general theme for each of those for you by the time my character is ready to be submitted.

Isn't that picture lovely? I'm so excited that I found it!
I definitely like the Imperial relative idea; her markings could be caste-origin; I am leaning towards a Hindi-inspired notion where placement is caste and the actual design reflects her magical powers … color could be clan related … it would be a whole heraldic code.
<reads your post about making her an albino> <squeeeeeeeeee>
Oh, you are brilliant, Clockwork, my dear! I love her being an albino! Hmm is there a way, if I am approved, for me to send you the whole file, or should I try to re-find it online and send you a link so you can modify it to pure albino? Or I can ask for help to modify it … we've got photo-shop … whatever you think is best! I am tempted to say a 'learning' experience made her albino … and we'll have to work up how serious the daylight/eye issues are.

Since you are giving me a free hand with my clan, I will probably make up a smallish clan; perhaps100 persons total, some 10 or so named, and given basic character sketches, and I'll also work out a fairly detailed family tree, since she's an Imperial Relation.

I have this rather glorious notion of the starting story, complete with several possible story arcs for getting her out of the clan.
Right now my image of her is that she's avoided a marriage due to her intensive training and an indulgent father, who is some sort of brother/cousin to her clan Lord. He is a very good general (though she believes him to be the best in the world, lol). The scene starts at a massive funeral for her father, two of her older brothers and about half of her clan's warriors; they were betrayed, and attacked by overwhelming forces but held their line (thus to avoid dishonor).
She is stressed by the loss of her father, worried the clan lord won't recognize her still-living brother's right to determine her fate, and scared because they are thinking of sending her youngest brother (a child of her parent's old age) off to the temple.

And yes … I'll look at the White Wolf system and figure out a good balance for edges and flaws.

World Building Questions
As for the questions Teisei's origin story triggered – here are a few to keep you thinking:
1.What were her parents up to, and how so skilled if clearly not in a monastery! A mystery abounds there.
2.Is it common for Karmic Ties (such as the instant bond in your story) to occur between people, and if so, is it a function of their own personality and gifts-based instability as in Mercedes Lacky's Valdemar series? Is it instead a past-life recognition of debt, like the Deverry Saga by Katherin Kerr? Is it a burden or gift bestowed by the very power of Axiom itself, as in the Star Wars worlds by George Lucas? And even if -you- the GM know … do the characters??
3.Are the children sent to temple often chosen that way, by the monks themselves? If so are they then taken by force, even if the family would rather not? If such a bond is denied by one or both parties, are there long-ranging consequences?
4.Do your monks marry and have children, or not? I can't quite tell from the stories!

Oh! For how long have things been going poorly? If it is feasible, I'd like her to have at least a dim memories of the good times, before the current ruler.

On your world, I suspect that my character would be related to the Imperial family through the female line? Do they kill off other imperial sons when one inherits, or could her father have been the imperial relation? And do you have rules about how close it could or could not be?

Is this the sort of game where I -must- give her combat abilities? Aside from studying Tai Chi (which she does because it enhances her healing, as it is related to understanding and controlling Chi) I haven't given her any; if you envision the sort of world where combat is common, I'll give her a few more skills due to having a loving and indulgent family. If not, I'll simply try to figure out how her magic might help in combat, like perhaps she can weaken weapons and armor?

Oh, and I had yet another question! Is the armor on my continent the traditional bamboo/lacquered armor of the Japanese? Or metal? And speaking of background questions ...

Can you give maybe a thumbnail sketch of three of four precepts of the monks/monastic/local religion as adapted for this world? I just went to the wikki Buddhism site and it was a bit overwhelming. I wouldn't mind a short list; it needn't be exhaustive! I can keep web searching if you haven't parsed that down to a finite body of knowledge yet.

I am going to write a funeral scene for my character's background story, so I've been going over Feudal Japan and Imperial China burial customs; do you have any particular customs/beliefs you do or do not want? I will be happy, of course, to alter my story if I include anything that doesn't mesh, but if you've a few firm ideas already it will simplify matters to know ahead of time!

World Building Answers
Ah, yes the never ending burden of Non Player Characters <eyes dance>.
For instance, it is inevitable that you must have at least a thumbnail sketch of your ruler, of the leader of each faction who opposes him, and of the temples where-in PC's dwell or dwelt. In addition, I will probably hassle you for a really challenging rival clan, whose dimensions and leader you'll need to invent, and I suspect you'll need at least one really evil, truly despicable bad guy on each continent to move the plot along.
After I get my person and my clan sorted out, I'd be happy to help you with minor folks; usually, major ones sort of -have- to fall to the GM to create. <pats your back gently.> It's a lot of work running a whole world. But so satisfying!

As for sub plots for Paramnar, don't let it distress you that there are fewer plots brewing there; it is a more rigid world, which means all plots must be more carefully balanced, and in addition you've had only one PC, who is sort of a GM second, as well, so that free flowing plots are likely to move a bit slowly. But I'll give you LOTS to work with here, which will help, and we can try to coax one or two more for each side; I find 3 – 4 players is ideal, usually, in terms of lots of interaction (they can always chat to each other while the GM is busy rolling, thinking and writing) and they will inspire each other, too! Its nice when characters are self-starting and have ideas of what they want and where they wish to go.

Ah, magic! I love magic. But yes, indeed, your world is very richly detailed – I can see why you needed to put in limits! We might want to eventually develop a board JUST for making characters, where we pare down the initial choices and put them in very clear order, with the unusual words used in deciding upon character creation decisions defined right in the text … but that must wait until we've made 10 or 15 characters and really know the essential questions and can make short, concise tables that delineate each common option … <stops> <sheepish smile> <clears throat>

I will be happy to help you both with plots and stories. Please feel free at any point to tell me no, or to remind me its -your- world!

Everything Else
I am sad that Lord Johnny can't play with us right now especially as he's helped so much in shaping the world, but I do understand! Real life first.

Thank you for trusting me to keep OOC and IC straight; this way I can talk to Haloriel, and delightfully indulge in following both story lines! Yay! I have had to be very firm with myself and NOT tempt her into an indiscretion until I got a ruling for you, oh GM!

The problem of needing so many NPCS is behind the massive Pern Project my family and I are undertaking; on Pern, you know, the dragon riders can go anywhere, at the drop of a hat. And so they -DO-.  I have to develop entire holds or cotholds or Gathers or Hatchings out of whole cloth on a moment's notice! You have all my sympathy!

<dances> You get to -build- robots! Oh, glorious! Marvelous! Yes, yes my dear we are indeed kindred spirits! I love them, too. I want to buy one of those little room cleaners as my very first robot. <nods firmly> But I've never built one! Good for you!

And yes, I love the Tower series … I've just begun running a Talent campaign for my family. <eyes dance> I made the old, non-profit Centers and the FTT company rivals. So much fun!

I'm really looking forward to writing with you in your lovely world!

Oh, a Tower series would be fun! Should I send you the notes we worked out, Haloriel? It makes a nice balance to have two very different points of view on Talent. And I have a few shocking social quotes from her books that make for really fascinating role play of Talented families.

It amuses me so much that you posted this idea!

Yes.  Send me thingsssss.  My idea probably won't be something that happens until I'm really settled in here, plus I have another thing I'm creating, however ... I'm beginning to cry massive tears that I didn't make the Japanese type one. LOL. That was exactly my idea and reasoning behind it. :3  And Drake made a fine suggestion about allowing for players to make their own side-story arcs in an adult-oriented area of the forum, if they want to include explicit things in their plot developments. :)  I would just need to figure out how people should best tag the titles, so that people know that it all goes together.

I get mental images of that plant from Jumanji...

CLockwork! She's lovely - I adore that you lightened the marks, too, so that she's all pink and silver, so lovely. <bounces> I can't wait to get this character put together!

I'm so very excited to see what you come up with! :)

Still working on responding to your commentary and questions, by the way. :3

Re: Character Decisions
Quote
I do appreciate your taking the time to walk me through this part; its so important for a character to have depth

You are most welcome, my Lady. :)  I wholeheartedly agree!

Quote
As to energy Manipulations – I like your idea of her mastering a unique sub-specialty!  I will go wrestle with your naming rules and see if I can come up with a name you like. I am so glad you like the idea of her mending things! I will look up your Meilarma or Meilaoima clan and I am sure to use that idea, too.

Meilarma = of Wood, Meilaoima = of Growth.  Just in case you were a bit confused on those references.

Initial pondering: Mei'ikaoi Daomasu, or Teilaoi Daomasu, perhaps?

Quote
Eewww! But fun.

This sounds absolutely spot-on and fantastic. :)

Quote
I have not yet worked out 'critical fail' consequence or an 'over channeling' consequence, but I definitely will have at least a general theme for each of those for you by the time my character is ready to be submitted.

"critical fail," in most cases, should be the lose of one's physical form and identity, and finding one's sentient essence dispersed into a state of omni-sentience/presence until you can be given a new form.  Presently, this is limited to the concept of reincarnation/rebirth.  Later on, I hope to include automatonic forms as an alternative.

Quote
Isn't that picture lovely? I'm so excited that I found it!

Yes!!  I'm very excited that you found it, too! :3

Quote
I definitely like the Imperial relative idea; her markings could be caste-origin; I am leaning towards a Hindi-inspired notion where placement is caste and the actual design reflects her magical powers … color could be clan related … it would be a whole heraldic code.

I like where you are going with this. :3

Quote
<reads your post about making her an albino> <squeeeeeeeeee>
Oh, you are brilliant, Clockwork, my dear! I love her being an albino! Hmm is there a way, if I am approved, for me to send you the whole file, or should I try to re-find it online and send you a link so you can modify it to pure albino? Or I can ask for help to modify it … we've got photo-shop … whatever you think is best! (done :3) I am tempted to say a 'learning' experience made her albino … and we'll have to work up how serious the daylight/eye issues are.
<blushes vividly>

So glad you like the idea. :3

I remember reading once that albinos are prone to either really light blue or pink eyes.  Light blue eyes tend to be a little less light-sensitive than pink eyes.

Quote

More spot-on, delightful brainstorming, my Lady!  Carry on! :3

Re: World Building Questions
Quote
1.What were her parents up to, and how so skilled if clearly not in a monastery! A mystery abounds there.

All Paramnari are biologically skillful with energy manipulation.    I wanted there to be a clear, enviable difference between the Paramnari and the Nu Logikirum, because the Paramnari are still deeply in-tune with their mysticism and open-mindedness to the unknown that defines Axiom.

Her parents would, each, have probably studied for a time as Idaeo'an.  It is not forbidden to leave the Monaznar after swearing one's lifebound oaths.  Similarly, the head Idaeo'suzei of the Monaznar is often succeeded by the sentient choice of the Taesa (Shrine), rather than strictly by their death.  Many factors may influence this.

Quote
2.Is it common for Karmic Ties (such as the instant bond in your story) to occur between people

Yes, but none of the examples you mentioned really seemed to be the glove that fits that hand.  I would say that it is more akin to the recognition of belonging to that other person... kind of like the concept of soul mates... but is not limited to the concept of romance.  This can be any kind of bonding; and may include other relationships outside of the usual 1:1 boundaries.  When Maokeisu found Asaomun, she was only three years old.  Thence, their relationship was affirmed as teacher/student, to begin with.  But they knew that they belonged to each other and their lives should be intertwined from that moment therefrom.

Quote
And even if -you- the GM know … do the characters??

Players would choose, before implementing the idea, whether their character(s) should recognize the bond for what it is, and how they plan for their character to act thereupon.

Case-by-case basis, essentially.

Quote
3.Are the children sent to temple often chosen that way, by the monks themselves? If so are they then taken by force, even if the family would rather not? If such a bond is denied by one or both parties, are there long-ranging consequences?

It is not uncommon for a Taesa to send its Primary Idaeo'suzei on a pilgrimage to find a particular individual.  Details are often cryptic and vague, in this regard.

However, this is not an exclusive method.

Johnny first coined the idea of parents taking their child(ren) to a Monaznar (probably the one that their Clan's Primary energy is associated with directly and/or that they support with worship, respect, tithes, etc.).  This would consign the child to a fate therein, as an Idaeo'an, until they were of a mature enough age/mindset to decide whether they wanted to stay at the Monaznar, or strike out into the world with only their own wit to support their selves, or return to their Clan, or...

Quote
4.Do your monks marry and have children, or not?

They don't have to, but may form relationships among those Beholden to them and bear offspring, as a result.  These children would be raised within the confines of the Monaznar, by default, or given to the Idaeo'suzei's clan for other training, or given unto the staff of the Param... etc.

Any male Paramnaran is entitled to have as many, or as few, individuals Beholden to them.  If that also includes males, then it is politely overlooked as the male Beholden's choice.  There is not very much in the way of conflict concerning relationships that defy procreation-friendly standards.

Quote
Oh! For how long have things been going poorly? If it is feasible, I'd like her to have at least a dim memories of the good times, before the current ruler.

Asaomun was 3 when the old Param was 157.  He died that same year, and she is now... let me think...

... 19 taokuneii.  So it's been 16 taokuneii that the new Param has been in responsibility of the Ikaoi Taesa temple.  The Paramnari do not understand why the Taesa has not chosen a successor, given the circumstances, but do not dare question it outside of carefully-guarded whispers.  There is probably corruption, of some nature, at play.

Quote
On your world, I suspect that my character would be related to the Imperial family through the female line? Do they kill off other imperial sons when one inherits, or could her father have been the imperial relation? And do you have rules about how close it could or could not be?

I was almost to the point of suggesting sister/daughter/niece.  Though, with your idea concerning the funeral (and I do love what you suggested with that), then feel free to adjust the family tree accordingly.

The only time a male of the Imperial family encounters foul play is when that current Param suffers the appropriate psychological imbalance required to perceive a threat to his position.  This is because the Taesa is the ultimate decider regarding inheritance... and has been known to step in and overrule a blood heir's "rightful privilege."  Obviously something's a bit out of sorts with that, though, now.

Quote
Is this the sort of game where I -must- give her combat abilities? Aside from studying Tai Chi (which she does because it enhances her healing, as it is related to understanding and controlling Chi) I haven't given her any; if you envision the sort of world where combat is common, I'll give her a few more skills due to having a loving and indulgent family. If not, I'll simply try to figure out how her magic might help in combat, like perhaps she can weaken weapons and armor?

A female Paramnaran is discouraged from learning combat skills/abilities.  I do realize that there were female Samurai, but the concept is considered extremely dishonorable to the female individual, and their clan, if they choose the fighter's path.

Combat between the clans is a common part of their feudal existance, however it is the males that do the fighting and defense of their clans.

Quote
Oh, and I had yet another question! Is the armor on my continent the traditional bamboo/lacquered armor of the Japanese? Or metal? And speaking of background questions ...

A combination of bamboo/lacquered and saokei. :)

Quote
Can you give maybe a thumbnail sketch of three of four precepts of the monks/monastic/local religion as adapted for this world? I just went to the wikki Buddhism site and it was a bit overwhelming. I wouldn't mind a short list; it needn't be exhaustive! I can keep web searching if you haven't parsed that down to a finite body of knowledge yet.

This may take me some time.  If you could be more specific, still, that would be very appreciated.  :3  I like over-detailed niblets. :3

Quote
I am going to write a funeral scene for my character's background story, so I've been going over Feudal Japan and Imperial China burial customs; do you have any particular customs/beliefs you do or do not want? I will be happy, of course, to alter my story if I include anything that doesn't mesh, but if you've a few firm ideas already it will simplify matters to know ahead of time!

Any of the customs from that inspiring era of the Asian cultures is perfectly plausible to include. :)  Carry on! <3

Re: World Building Answers
Quote
In addition, I will probably hassle you for a really challenging rival clan, whose dimensions and leader you'll need to invent

Ok :)  Hassle away. >:)

Quote
and I suspect you'll need at least one really evil, truly despicable bad guy on each continent to move the plot along.

Paramnar: Evil, for sure.

Nu Logikus: Antihero?

Quote
After I get my person and my clan sorted out, I'd be happy to help you with minor folks; usually, major ones sort of -have- to fall to the GM to create. <pats your back gently.> It's a lot of work running a whole world. But so satisfying!

So very satisfying.  But I would love your help in further-developing my world.  Oh, this truly is going to become epic... 0-o

Quote

I concur wholeheartedly. :3

Quote

<purrs and blushes again, possibly more vividly than earlier>

You are adorable, my Lady. :)  Do not ever feel the need to silence your delightful rambling and brainstorming, with me. :)

Quote
I will be happy to help you both with plots and stories. Please feel free at any point to tell me no, or to remind me its -your- world!

Oh, YAY! ^_^

Re: Everything Else
Quote
I am sad that Lord Johnny can't play with us right now especially as he's helped so much in shaping the world, but I do understand! Real life first.

Aye, t'is saddening.  And I do hope that he is ok.

Quote
Thank you for trusting me to keep OOC and IC straight; this way I can talk to Haloriel, and delightfully indulge in following both story lines! Yay! I have had to be very firm with myself and NOT tempt her into an indiscretion until I got a ruling for you, oh GM!

Heh.  Between you and Haloriel, I cannot wait to see what sort of brainchildren hatch. :)

Quote
The problem of needing so many NPCS is behind the massive Pern Project my family and I are undertaking; on Pern, you know, the dragon riders can go anywhere, at the drop of a hat. And so they -DO-.  I have to develop entire holds or cotholds or Gathers or Hatchings out of whole cloth on a moment's notice! You have all my sympathy!

No, no... you have my sympathy o-0

Quote
<dances> You get to -build- robots! Oh, glorious! Marvelous! Yes, yes my dear we are indeed kindred spirits! I love them, too. I want to buy one of those little room cleaners as my very first robot. <nods firmly> But I've never built one! Good for you!

Only very rarely sometimes, unfortunately.  I rarely have the resources/opportunity.  But I did get to soldier together my own little, solar-powered gidget with eraser feet, once...  <fond memories, spaced out expression>

Quote
And yes, I love the Tower series … I've just begun running a Talent campaign for my family. <eyes dance> I made the old, non-profit Centers and the FTT company rivals. So much fun!

Ooh, I'd love to hear more about this, especially if you get approved. :3

Quote

I just wish it was more polished in appearance.  I haven't a clue how to do that though.  I'm so very, very inept when it comes to computer things. :D

Dear Clockwork,
I looked at all your links ... your work is incredible! It is so hard to change colors without loosing definition. You are very talented.

<blinks> does this mean that if we can't figure out how to wrap our dragon patterns on our dragon shape for the Pern project, you might know how to do it?  We've made up over 100 shades of dragons and about 20 patterns, and now we need to get the patterns in the correct shades onto our model...

I keep meaning to post the color shades somewhere Haloriel can find them; so many colors of green, blue, brown, bronze and gold really give wonderful choices for character descriptions, especially if everyone can see the color swatches and knows exactly what the name means.

And I love your response to my post! I have to polish my Box story (its nearly done) and post it, then finish the newspaper, then I ought to have time to get back to my lovely lady here.  I really appreciate that she is not going to be forced to be a warrior;  Now we just have to hope for enough PCs that so that she can survive without combat skills.

Haloriel!!  He's delightful, and I love that he's holding the sword and the umbrella.  I'm excited ... I'm chanting, "You made one, you made one," over and over!

I've been graphic editing for... about 15? years... <counts on her fingers, distractedly>  Yea, 15.

So, I'll skip the probably and go with "yes" :)  If it boils down to it I can "draw" them onto the body with the lasso select tool.  My laptop mousepad will behave... <coughs and glares at it>

Since you both have mentioned something about having played WoW, you should appreciate:

- the lettering is all mine.  The symbols were traced, on my laptop, onto the custom deer body, with the lasso tool.

I really appreciate that she is not going to be forced to be a warrior;  Now we just have to hope for enough PCs that so that she can survive without combat skills.

Excellent. :)

Well, there have to be other people out there who aren't daunted by excruciating detail.  Patience shall prevail, I'm sure. :)  I need to turn that into my new mantra... o-0

I've been graphic editing for... about 15? years... <counts on her fingers, distractedly>  Yea, 15.

Dear Clockwork, I love that picture! Malorne is a particular favorite of mine. I can't believe you did that lettering by hand!! I know very well how much skill it takes to do that. Or maybe the correct term is I know how much skill -won't- do it.  ;)

<bounces> ooh yay! Well, we won't burden you unless we can't figure it out, but ooh! I can't wait to share with you what we've done, because you will understand it!
I have almost, almost finished the story for Olive; I am just waiting for either my family or Haloriel to get up for a final proof read. I find it goes so much better if someone other then I reads it before I post! I've nearly finished the written part of the Newspaper one, as well. That requires my family's graphic skills to finish, though!

<grin> As for waiting patiently ... we may have to seduce them in by exposing them to the detail in layers, and emphasizing things like the ability to play someone NOT from Axiom so that they don't have to know the details; it will be fine for their characters to ask!

I wish I could PM you, since I'm more than happy to offer my own proofing skills to anyone who needs such a thing.  Goodness knows, I should be able to use my bookworm nature and spelling bee history for something...  else, they drilled those word lists into my head for nothing... o-o

I wonder, if I were to set my email onto my profile, that you could access it?  I don't know just how much is blocked to Unapproved peoples.  Hmm...

Well, when I set up my advertisement in the old development thread, I made sure to include a section about Outworlders.  But yes, that is precisely what the Outworlder concept is for... to give people who know nothing about either setting to gradually digest the learning curve and adapt to it. :)

I was considering making someone from another place.  But I don't know where I'd send them in from.  Maybe Feudal Japan. Muhaha.  Hey Clockwork ... think you can improve that picture I posted? <3  Also, if you guys like poetry, I has a thread now.

Oh!  I totally missed what you said there, I'm sorry. :)  I'm not sure I can describe what I mean.  It makes sense in my head ... I guess ... grr.  Or find a background for this one.  I like the other, but the details are not as sharp as I would like to see them, if that makes sense?  Perhaps I shall take a class to learn this stuff. :D

Dear Clockwork!!!

My heart -stopped- when I saw that picture of the samurai in the rain, all sharp and immediate, the beautiful dream-scape background, the superimposed fighting stance, of -clearly- the same person AND then the RAIN!! in the Foreground ... and yet it was all clear, beautiful perfect!

I'm truly in awe, my dear!

Oh, Clockwork! I've a few more world building questions we'll post for you later today; Is it alright if we make a rough map of my clan's territory and main settlement? Ooh, and Zetta is thinking of making me a graphic for the Background story, too!  We don't know what Gimp is, but its impressing us!

and Haloriel!  He's just ... Dreamy! It would be great if he was from REAL Fuedal Japan because everything would be -almost- right.

Ack!  Well I don't need to be making your heart stop, my Lady! o-0

<flutters around, worriedly>

Any and all questions are loved, of course.  Feel free to direct them here, or PMs, now that you've been approved :3  Either works equally well for me. ^^

Is it alright if we make a rough map of my clan's territory and main settlement?
Absolutely!  If s/he's feeling ambitious, I'm always intrigued in maps and suchlike (which are totally not my forte).  The world map I threw together for Axiom was very basic - just a visual reference for the alignment of one continent to the other.  I have no other visual references for any part of the world.

Ooh, and Zetta is thinking of making me a graphic for the Background story, too!
Sounds lovely! :)  All clear, here.

GIMP does have a bit of a learning curve to it.  I loved it from the first time I ever played around with it, though, when I also played around with Linux.  That was 11 years ago!

Let me know if you need any help.  Also, let me know when you have some time.  Drake and I have been brainstorming, and we've nailed a couple breakthrough concepts that I'd love to have your input on! :)

Good luck w/ the Cafe! :)

Ok - So here he is in his hopefully-spellchecked, resplendent glory! :)  I decided to scrap the initial image edit that I made for him and go with the original aesthetics description, instead.

This character may be treated as an NPC.  Please discuss in-depth interactions with the GM, first.

Body: Fit, and somewhat athletic

Aesthetics: skin-tone is deeply tanned; eyes are a vibrant. emerald green; face is a angular and long; hair-tone is a deep, rich red with natural, blonde highlights

{translation: (the) Keiki of Fire}

{ee ' d'eye ' oh ' shoo ' zay}

(Oath)Bound to: Maomu Gaearma Taesa
{mow ' moo   g'eye ' ahr ' mah   t'eye ' shah}
{translation: Third Shrine of (the) Terra}

Beholder of: Idaeo'an Teisei Asaomun
{ee ' d'eye ' oh ' ahn  |  tay ' shay  |  ahsh ' ow ' moon}

History

The Taesa rested there, resonating a curious, subtle vibration, and appearing as if it were moulded from the ground, itself.  Each Taesa was a mystery, with its origins remaining unknown regardless of how thoroughly one delved into Paramnarma historical records.  This was no exception, seeming as if it had been Shaped seamlessly from a reflective, pitch black stone.  Except for this Taesa, and a couple other Gaear Taesa like it, there were no other examples of this strange, unnamed material on Paramnar.  Now, the boy -  merely 9 taokuneii - stood there with his back to the primary Idaeo'suzei of the Monaznar; fists were clenched, and he was grimly stoic, and somber.

His parents had discussed the possibility of inducting him as an Idaeo'an, but they had procrastinated the actual deed because his Clan had a dwindling number of warriors to protect it.  This summer, however, the elder Idaeo'suzei had been sent - by the Taesa, itself - upon a pilgrimage to collect him.  His parents were distraught, but they knew better than to argue such a blatant play of destiny.  So they had packed the most basic necessities, and bid him farewell.

As he had glanced at his mother, who kept her soft, grey eyes averted, he knew that he would never see them again.

The imagery of his brief recollection shimmered, then distorted into nonexistence, as if it were a disturbed ripple in a pond.  Something demanded his fully-focused attention, and so he promptly snapped-to as a curious sentience began to massage his mind.

Of a sudden, a Voice that was both soft and thunderous consumed him; reverberated within the confines of his skull.  "Come."

He instantly, instinctively obeyed, striding forth in three paces to stand within touching-distance of the smooth, black Taesa.

"Kneel."

He dropped to both knees with a fluid, almost inhuman, and certainly possessed grace.

"Touch me."

Of a volition that was almost not his own, he placed both hands upon the unnaturally-smooth surface of the Taesa.  A choking sound would have been heard, from behind, if his perception were not so wholly engaged by the overwhelming connection.  If he had been aware, he might have realized that the elder Idaeo'suzei was witnessing something that had never before occured, in all of Paramnarma history, and was beside himself with shock.

Beneath his sensitive touch, the boy felt the stone begin to warm and vibrate, until it was thrumming so intensely that his vision had completely blurred.  Outside of his awareness, he began to glow with a blindingly brilliant, deep-gold luminescence.  This persisted for an entire hourglass' span of time.  Then, without any warning, the Taesa flared with a great, violent heat, and the flesh of his fingers and hands was seared to blisters.  The heat then invaded and coursed through his body, sending a debilitating, fiery pain to travel akin to every vein, nerve and capillary.  The agony was so intense that he could not move, or cry out.

Then, as suddenly as it had flared into existence, it was completely gone.  The boy's body was encompassed in debilitating shock.  After a brief moment, he collapsed, unconscious.

There he reverently knelt, by  the ancient Idaeo'suzei's deathbed, his fingers entwined with those of the old man's clammy, age-spotted hand.  The Omonai had long-since slipped beyond the margins of coherency, and was now wavering on the thinnest margins of bodily existence.  For those who had lived so long - fully 197 taokuneii - it was always the hardest to let go of their corporeal margins.  Certainly, it was not for lack of wanting; the spirit was simply too familiar with the body.

Maokeisu gently, soothingly manipulated the Idaeo'suzei's Ikaoi, impressing comfort and peace upon it as it slowed its meandering path amid the frail, deteriorating flesh, blood, and bone.  Under his breath, he hummed an old, nameless tune that he had been taught by his great-grandmother as a wee toddler.  His deep, bass voice was soft, yet it vibrated through his entire body and channeled through his intertwined grasp.

Another hourglass would pass, as he tirelessly soothed his ancient guide amid his inevitable passing.  Then, in half the span of an intaken breath, he felt the last ties sever and dissipate.  He bowed his head as he bid the Omonai farewell and blessings upon his next existence.  He unwove his fingers and placed a marbled agate carefully in the old man's palm.  Then he placed that hand, the right, upon the man's chest - with the stone cupped carefully betwixt - and he folded the left hand over it.

Next, he uncorked a flask of imbued danaoi and began to sprinkle the substance over the now-spiritless corpse.  Once the cleansing was complete, he summoned for the embalmers.  They would wrap the body in mao layers of treated, softened bamboo-cloth, then mao more layers of the finest silk.  His tightly-wrapped form would be further-treated with embalming herbs and oils.  Then, like his predecessors before him, the body would be arranged upon a strong, bamboo-pole litter, and transported to the sacred, underground crypt.  He would be lowered into a sarcophagus decorated with imageries of stories of his achievements and talents, bestowed with the few possessions he would have allowed himself to collect, and sealed away along with the ashes of those who - being most dear or invaluable to him - had passed on before him.

As one life ended, so another truly began.  The mantle was invisible, yet absolute.  He already knew that, unlike the Omonai, he would not wear it for the entirety of his existence.  However, for the duration of his responsibility, he would wear it proudly, and well.

The young man - of only 36 taokuneii - exited the deathroom, already feeling the Mark etching itself, permanently, into the flesh of his forehead.

Additional Notes:

Keiki Maokeisu is able to sense and manipulate:
  • Standard Manipulations:
    • Saear Daomasu - fully mastered; clan element
    • D'aoi Daomasu - fully mastered
    • Gaear Daomasu - fully mastered
    • Ramnaear Daomasu - critically advanced; expert, qualified to teach
    • Aenaoi Daomasu - fully mastered
    • Saokei Daomasu - critically advanced; expert, qualified to teach
    • Meilar Daomasu - critically advanced; expert, qualified to teach
    • Meilaoi Daomasu - critically advanced; expert, qualified to teach
    • Ikaoi Daomasu - fully mastered
    • Keiar Daomasu - critically advanced; expert, qualified to teach
    • Seitaoi Daomasu - critically advanced; expert, qualified to teach
    • Seitaomar Daomasu - critically advanced; expert, qualified to teach
    • Taomar Daomasu - critically advanced; expert, qualified to teach
  • Special Enhancements/Abilities:
    • When, as a young boy, Maokeisu was Claimed by the Maomu Gaearma Taesa, it permanently enhanced his natural, Primary control of Saear.  If he focuses intently, he is able to heat the terra, even to the point of melting.  Smaller swatches of terra generate, on average, less-potent consequences.  Also, the distance of the affected terra to his own position affects the quality of the manipulation, as well as the consequences.
      • Associated consequences typically involve: a headache that, very gradually, increases in intensity over the length of time that Maokeisu focuses upon this ability.  An extended duration also generates "glitches" in his brain, that range from slight, temporary impairment to persistent debilitations.  Thusfar, nothing has ever been permanent, though recovery has sometimes lasted several sukaoii.
The End of an Era, and Finding Asaomun

As a young man, Markus was sent to a boarding school where he was educated to be the next Magir of the clan. During his time there, however, his father made a series of poor decisions that resulted in the collapse of the family's fortunes. When Markus returned home, the Inkarn family was no longer of the Konsulatus and had been stripped of its Konvant status.

By dint of effort, Markus rebuilt some amount of the clan's strength. There were too few formatir and formatos left for the clan to still be a Konvant, but through wealth, Markus was able to build the Inkarn family up into a Tradak and restored it to its place in the Konsulatus.

The family could now be considered stronger than ever, trade might bringing it more power than it had wielded as a Konvant, but Markus is unhappy with the fact that his family no longer holds that status. If he could, he would restore the family's former title.

Oh, you are most definitely back, silvertongued charmer that you are >.>.

I promise to look over your profile submission soon.  Unfortunately, today is a serious, sad day for me, and I will be kept away from the computer for most of it.  You are welcome to inquire, in private, for more details.  Idariel is away, but Haloriel could probably provide you with some lovely feedback on your character, in the meanwhile. :)

Life is, indeed life.  And death, well... death is a question, I think.

Do not worry too much, for me.  In my primary relationship, I am the one that is far more at peace with these events, sad though they may be.
