Saguaro Saloon

From afar, onlookers may overlook what would seem like a mirage in the desert. The town built on the plateaus and in crevices of a rocky hill, and the one with a steady stream of coaches and men on horseback, is none other than Oasis. Found close to the border of the foreign country down south, Oasis is the last stop in the country before gentlemen and outlaws alike cross the river into Bandito country. Like an oasis, the town supplies the locals and passing folk with needed fluids to moisten parched mouths and burn throats. The town also has a church, for those seeking salvation from their lives. From desert food to leather garments to guns and never-ending supply of bullets, Oasis is the place for the lawmen and criminals, but they first have to get past the Marshal, who makes his home in the town.

Sitting at the peak of the rocky hill the town is built upon is the Saguaro Saloon, aptly named after the tall cacti strewn about the desert landscape around the town. The semi-fortified mansion used to be the home of a man who ran for the West with two women tagging along behind him. Now it belongs to Guinevera Starr, the self-claimed Madame of the Saguaro Saloon. Most of the town's business and activity center in and around the watering hole, which doubles as a gambling station and pleasure center catering to all gentlemen and not-so-gentle-men. It was the Saguaro Saloon that turned Oasis from a humble trading post to a need-to-see place in the West.

Sounds interesting.  I'd like to be a bar tender...is experience required?  Wait...its the Wild West, no blenders  ;)

Are you going to populate the town with regulars?  Sheriff, Doctor, etc?

Eliza

Wild West bartenders will serve liquor and liquor only ... purified water is scarce to my knowledge and there's not much water in the desert anyway. If it's liquor (gin, rum, tequila, moonshine, beer), then you'll be able to serve it. I'm not sure vodka was available back then ... Research anyone?

I was probably going to first populate the saloon with the needed staff (courtesans, bartender, piano player*) before populating the town. The most needed in the town should be the sheriff and the sheriff is the law in the town. Out of all the locals in the town, the sheriff has VIP status in the saloon.

* The piano player could be anybody who knows how to play the piano pretty well, from a local to someone passing through. I'm not going to let harlots play the piano though.

AndyZ

I'd be interested in playing one of the patrons.  I'll be bookmarking this.

Vodka left Europe for the America's in the 1930's; a little after the Wild West was tamed.

What's the hiring process, ma'am?  Intros on how the individuals arrived?  Or, is it assumed they are a troupe settling there?

Eliza

Inspired by true facts from history, I'm modelling my character (the madame in this case) after the surviving daughter of a deceased mother. She became the new harlot at a brothel and  quickly rose to the top after ... (this is where history stop and my imagination begins) ... the former madame went missing.

My character was the one who rose to the top, or in this case, assumed the position of madame when no one dared to take it. Ever since, she has successfully managed and contributed to the saloon. The former harlots leave and one by one, new girls from different backgrounds become new painted ladies at the saloon.

I want this RP to not conform to being like it really happened in history. I'm taking elements of courtesans from Italy and incorporating them into the saloon activities, but the story and setting to be within the era of the Old West.

As for the background of the Oasis, after the saloon became an icon in the town, locals have mutually helped out and gained help from the the saloon.

Aiden

I would so play a sheriff or gun slinger for this, even play some poker if we can find a way to do it effectively.

Eliza

Sheriff it is ... or gunslinger if there is already a sheriff. To me gunslingers are another way of saying freelance mercenary.

Chain of Command (according to RDR):
Sheriff --> Deputies --> Gunslingers

Eliza

Also, I'm planning to have a couple systems involved in this game. The first would be the appointments system. Each player who plays a courtesan has her own waiting list of players who wish to RP with them. Private engagements will be done in a separate thread which will incorporate private activities in a private room. Appointments will be made outside the room and the kind of appointment matters as well. The kinds of appointments may range from a simple conversation over drinks to a stroll around town to full blown sex.

Others systems will be in the future, like a gambling system, if there is one that can be properly done. I'd like a plethora of gambling in here, like poker, black jack, and liar's dice.

Wintercat

Could be interesting, posting interest as a bartender here, and if another applies for that as well and seems more qualified could always take up the role of a doctor. Both a customer and a guy that shows up to make sure the girls are in fine shape if any of the clients get too rough at some point.

Personally dont think there'd be anything wrong with playing a woman either but figure that its best left for the ones that are more enthusiastic about it and who might lure clients within the saloon better.
I've taken the Oath of The Drake. Remind me of it if you think I act against it.

As I'm pretty green here, will an "appointments system" be readily apparent?

Also, as another has requested the bartending position, would being one of the ladies be an open option?

How will assignments be distributed?

I know, I know--shut up with all the quesitons, right?

Eliza

The appointments system is so that every girl will have one person they are catering/RPing with at one time (or two or more if that girl allows groups). This is to maintain a low level of chaos as to who is RPing with whom.

I can have two bartenders, or a working girl who is skilled with pouring drinks alongside a full-time bartender.

Appointments are to be done in OOC first, but elaborated in IC. Think of it as a player is at a the top of the waiting list of a working girl, and she is available to RP with. He/she can post in the saloon floor (where drinks are served and appointments are made) and if a working girl is available but the player is not on her waiting list, then that girl can let him/her know if the girl is available for an appointment. If not, then it is the girl's duty to keep him entertained, either through drinks, gambling, or conversation. Think the saloon floor as a hostess bar and casino.

Thank you.  I've got a good picture, now.  I have the "movie" playing in my head of a saloon with tables and girls moving about if there are customers, or just chatting, waiting for their bankrolls to roll in...

Would you need a Texas Ranger/US Marshal type? I have a few ideas for one that would frequent the saloon for gambling, drinks, and conversation with the ladies.

When is this game roughly set? Year wise?

Eliza

I'm guessing US Marshals pass through the town on a regular basis.

I'm pretty sure individual players can come up with a number of people from different walks of life pass through the town. I can see one player come in and be a government worker, a hunter, a scientist ... all at different times.

I'm probably setting this game in the late 1800's, early 1900's. For an exact date, I'm gunning for the year 1906. If there is any arguments with the year, please let me know.

1SAZ

Well, US Marshals were assigned to counties to keep the piece, while a Sheriff covered an individual town that didn't have a Marshal, or worked in conjunction with the Marshal. So I wouldn't be too surprised if there was a Marshal in the town the game is set.

As for date, 1906 is a pretty good date. Start of modernization in the west, and the closing of an era. Sounds like a rather fun time to have a saloon run by women. I could also see them buddying up to the local Marshal to avoid some of the more problematic events that come with the modernization the 1900's brought to the west.

So, would you like a Marshal to be a regular character to the cast or just a guest star sort of deal?

Eliza

I'd like Marshals to be part of the atmosphere of this RP. Maybe we could have both the Sheriff and the Marshal be related by blood besides having the same VIP benefits with the saloon. The top girl wouldn't mind having both the Sheriff and the Marshal in her room once in a while.

I'd like to the Marshal to be a recurring character, coming and going. He always would stay overnight, but not two nights in a row. And due to an outside reason, he may be gone longer at some times than other times. The Sheriff, since he makes his home in the town, would be one of the main cast.

And since the Marshal is in good terms with the staff in the saloon, he has offered personalized weapons for every girl, for their personal defense against those who break the rules. So if someone dares to unholster his gun and stick in a poker dealer's face, he will find himself in the sights of several guns from both the patrons and the girls.

1SAZ

Well, I'd be happy with either the Marshal or Sheriff position. I do like the idea of the Marshal being either related by blood with one of the girls or just being on very good terms with them. I see him being more of a gambler and drinker than being with the girls for a night, just enjoying the comforts a warm saloon offer. More Wyatt Earp than Doc Holiday as far as why he's in the saloon.

As for staying more than one night, he might just use a private room as a place to sleep. A home away from home so to speak. He'd need a place to sleep while he's in town after all. And if he's hunting down someone that would be in the area, it would make sense he'd stay in a place he personally armed.

As for giving the girls personalized weapons, I could easily do that. I do enjoy the history of the old west, so I know a great deal about the weapons that would be around in the time. Maybe he gives them the weapons as payment for his room and to cover his tabs and such.

Eliza

I meant the Marshal and the Sheriff could be brothers.

As for the personally arming the saloon in place of his payment, I'd go with that. The Marshal will be a investor for the saloon.

Aidan currently is willing to fill in the Sheriff position.

1SAZ

Ah. Simple misunderstanding. But yes, a relative in the area would give him more incentive to visit.

'Investor' is a rather polite way of saying "making sure his drinkin' hole stays where it is", I'm sure. I'm sure the Marshal would be more progressive than some of the others that walk into the saloon.

Wintercat

Hmm, I think I'll have to withdraw my presence from this. While the idea seems good, I have a bit of hard time wrapping my head around to a western mindset right now, already thinking on a lot of futuristic settings and related materials, so I think I'd rather step out now than risk slowing down and bothering other people's fun. Wishing you all fun games and hope you get a good bartender along. If nobody else expresses interest in that I will try and return, but if someone else would take it up I think it would be better for the game to have a fan of westerns playing that can get in the right mindset at the time.

Eliza

I understand you dilemma. If this was a futuristic western like Firefly, then I doubt there would be trouble wrapping your head around it ... but currently it's not ... though, *light bulb* ... if this doesn't lift off, then we could just revert to the future ... but not now.

Eliza

@Mistress: Since Wintercat has withdrew the position of bartender, the position is open for your taking. Would you like to be the full-time bartender, or would you like to take on a hybrid (half bartender/half working girl) position?

MistressofPen

Oooh.  Hybrid sounds lovely...and fuel efficient (sorry...I do the bad pun thing like some people breathe).  A whore who can pour...  Crap!  Sorry.  Yes.  Thank you :-)

1SAZ

Mistress, I do believe we'll get along perfectly. I do love the puns you have there.
