New method for breast implants...

Tummy fat can 'grow new breasts'

Quote
Fat from the tummy or bottom could be used to grow new breasts in a treatment which could be carried out in an hour - or a lunch break.

Scientists say they can create a fat mixture with concentrated stem cells, which, when injected into the breast, apparently encourages tissue to grow.

The therapy, detailed in Chemistry and Industry Magazine, could help cancer patients who have had mastectomies.

And if licensed, it may rival silicone for those seeking bigger breasts.

Using fat from the patient's own body to rebuild other areas is not a novel idea, but such reconstructions often fail as the fat is simply reabsorbed.

However using fat-derived stem cells appears to overcome this problem, according to the company behind the procedure, Cytori Therapeutics.

Scientists say they are not sure quite how it works, but suspect that the stem cells emit signals that encourage blood vessels to grow and nurture new tissue.

Rajiv Grover of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (Baaps) said he saw the research as a "positive development for medical science", but doubted whether it would provide any immediate results in cosmetic surgery.

"We need to find out how these cells work once they are in the breast before any great claims can be made."

Antonia Dean, a clinical nurse specialist at Breast Cancer Care also said more work needed to be done - "both in terms of how long the new breast really lasts for, but most importantly the safety implications for women who have had tumours."

Filling out

The procedure - dubbed Celution - could be carried out in an hour.

Fat from the either the stomach, bottom or thigh can be taken out with a standard liposuction procedure, and the stem cells then extracted.

These cells are placed into a cartridge ready for injection one hour later. The company says the breasts will then fill out over the course of six months.

The largest trial so far has involved 19 women in Japan. All of them had had at least partial mastectomies and all responded well to the treatment, with no major side-effects.

Clinical trials are continuing, and the company hopes to introduce the therapy to Europe in early 2008.

It is expensive - costing a few thousand pounds per cartridge, but this is not dissimilar to the price of conventional surgery.

In the UK, about 45,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Of these about 30% will have mastectomies.

the largest test was only 19 women..thats sort of lame dont you think. They will need a much larger test group and use people from more then just one ethnic group. They got to do alot more testing i say at least on 50-100 people. 19 people is just not enough to really have a good test.

but this procedure sounds like it would be easier on a women then getting implants. Sounds a little safer to me as well. but nothing is sure yet as they have not had a good test of it yet.

...because handling a hundred complications from a new medical procedure is a bit worse than dealing with a dozen and a half.  It's not like the reality of the situation changes.

And why would multiple ethnic groups be needed?  No single allele is restricted to any single ethnic group.

No, but different ethnic groups can have differing responses.

 Still..

yes different people from different ethic groups will respond different to medical procedures. Just how people from  different ethic groups are prone to having certain medical problems.

i did not mean for them to just start and do a test with 50-100 people, they would have to work up to that. Untill they have alot of succesful tests and really figure out how safe it is and how long it would last i would think women would want to hold off getting too excited about it.

But i can see how this would get alot of women excited though. No implants to deal with, the breasts would feel totaly natural (i think). And the recovery time would be alot faster so it seems. Though i think this procedure would get some women to overdo it.

Even those are just tendencies, none of them with 100% correlation, and finding those things generally requires thousands of samples.  This is stem cell based - it works because it duplicates the body's growth.  It would be unlikely to find ethnic complications short of leaving primates altogether.

Not to venture too far off topic, but the statement regarding different ethnic groups is kinda right and kinda wrong.  Obviously with certain things there is some increased risk, such as skin cancer for those without the natural skin protection.  Most conditions involve a cultural upbringing and also societal pressures.  For instance the increased rate of heart disease in African-Americans has a great deal to do with the average socio-economic class of that particular group.  Americans on average have a greater problem with obesisty for instance than say a person from Columbia.  So each country will obviously be responsible for its own testing.

As for overdoing it, last I heard the implants are restricted in size.  I believe a cup size larger is the most that can be achieved.  This has alot to do with that fact that the breast is not being filled with a solution, but is basically being grown from new tissue.  The true promise of this research is not so much breast growth, but that stem cells are seeing a larger scale of use.  Hopefully this will begin to show the possibilties that stem cells hold for the future of medicine and that their application is real, not just fiction.

Surely everything that you have mentioned, (including pale skins being more susceptible to certain skin problems because of exposure to the sun), are due to outside influences, not the person's genetics or stem cells?

As for the thread topic itself, I saw a piece about this on the TV.
From what I can gather, this is not going to have such a huge impact upon 'make me pretty and more attractive surgery', but is more a break through for those who need it for other reasons.

Some mascectomy patients can deal with the lack of a breast/s pretty well, however there are those who have even chosen to die rather than loose what they see as 'part of their femininity'.
If this method can help those who have been scarred (both mentally and physically) by such an evasive surgery, then lets get it in as soon as possible, no matter how many 'cup sizes' it would give.....

think method might also be able to be used for methods, imagine if they could get this to grow more tissure in other places of the body. perhaps it could help those with severe burns recover tissue. this could be good news to many people.

for a women it would be pretty horriable to lose a breast, i have seen shows about that on TV. if it could help the type of women Elvi mentioned then thats just awesome, if this method gets everything all worked out then this could change the world.
