Star Wars (for beginners)
« on: April 10, 2011, 12:19:51 PM »
http://www.starwars.com/games/playnow/crawl_creator/index.jsp?cs=g69y8crj82

Since the main system gaming thread is getting a little cluttered, I decided to put this one into a fresh thread, for ease of use. I know we have a few people interested in trying this out, so for those of you who haven't read the main thread, I'm offering to run a short scenario to introduce a particular system game, in this case the Star Wars Saga Edition.

Ideally there should be about 4-6 players. In terms of character creation, I can either assist with the creation, if people have access to the books, or can be given a concept for a character, and make suggestions about how it could be created using the system options.

The game will be set just after the destruction of the first Death Star, so presumably everyone should be reasonably familiar with the setting.

I would like to try running it on mumble, assuming a time slot could be found that suited everyone who was interested. If that's not viable, normal forum play will probably be the easiest.

This is open to anyone who wants to try system gaming for the first time, or indeed anyone who wants to try the Star Wars system.

The characters will be a freshly recruited Rebel cell, being sent on their first real mission.

Can I play a Jedi?
Yes, but I will have limits. Probably a single player will be allowed this (if more than one want it, it will be randomly determined). You would start like Luke in the first movie, untrained, and mostly ignorant of who and what the Jedi were.

Can I play a Droid?
Yes, but they are a bit trickier to play than other options. If you really want to, we can probably sort something out. Again, I will limit it to a single player.

This sounds interesting, but unfortunately I don't have access to the Star Wars RPG system books. Is there an online SRD available anywhere, or is it print / pdf only?

I don't know about an SRD I'm afraid. If you have a character concept in mind, I can help translate it into game terms though.

Well, when I still had a copy of Battlefront, I loved to play the scout class. Long range rifles, stealth, and booby-traps are generally my preferred play style.

I haven't played Battlefront, but in the Saga edition, there are 5 basic classes, each of which have access to a number of talent trees. These give the players speciali abilities, and are:

Jedi
 - Jedi Consular (Ambassadors and Negotiators)
 - Jedi Guardian (The martial Jedi abilities)
 - Jedi Sentinel (Dark side hunters)
Noble
 - Inspiration (Weaken your opponents resolve)
 - Leadership (Bolster your allies)
 - Lineage (Connections)
Scoundrel
 - Fortune (Good luck for you)
 - Misfortune (Bad luck for your opponents)
 - Slicer (Computer hacking)
 - Spacer (Good with vehicles and ships)
Scout
 - Awareness (I see you)
 - Camoflage (Blend in with your enviroment)
 - Fringer (Good at getting by in backwater worlds)
 - Survivor (Good for getting out of trouble in a hurry)
Soldier
 - Armour specialist
 - Brawler
 - Commando
 - Weapon specialist

Your character could probably fit into the Scout or Soldier class easiest.

In addition, every character has access to the same skills. Different classes get different ones more easily. Some things you can try without being trained in the skill, some you can't.

Acrobatics
Climb
Deception
Endurance
Gather Information
Initiative
Jump
Knowledge (various types)
Mechanics
Perception
Persuasian
Pilot
Ride
Stealth
Survival
Swim
Treat Injury
Use Computer
Use the Force

Alright, so I'll sign up as best I can:

Leon Jocine

-Age: 23
-Desired Class: Scout
-Talent Tree:     Camouflage
-Skills:
-I will probably focus on Deception, Stealth, and Initiative, just from looking. Do any of those skills lend themselves to setting traps / disabling computers / rigging bombs? Sorry I'm causing such a pain with this.

Brief Bio:
Leon was born on the tropical planet of Thyferra, and saw the results of the empire's attacks on the bacta growers and supplies on the planet. Seeing as the production of Bacta is the planet's life-blood, he quickly realized that destroying the rebel faction was of more import to the Empire than protecting the people who lived within it. So, rather than stand idly by and hope to be safe, the young man made his way off-planet, and sought out some way to enlist with the Alliance.

Appearance:
Leon's body is a medium build, about 5' 11" and 180 lbs,  but years traversing through Thyferran jungles has helped him to become very light on his feet. His dark brown hair is cropped short, almost to the point of baldness. He has fair skin and dark green eyes.

I hope this is acceptable? If not, please let me know and I'll add details as needed.

Hi, HairyHeretic! Thanks for this opportunity.
I'm a new player, never gone much farther in a system game than creating a character.
Speaking of which, will try to create a SWSE character when I'll get the book.

Thats fine to start with. Do you have a preferred species in mind? What about skills? I'll add a bit more info to the post to help people get an idea for what characters can do.

I suppose tomorrow I'll browse the book, try to create the character on my own and then will ask you what's missing/wrong with it.

No problem. I have all the books, so if you want to use anything from any of the others, let me know. I will probably have to rule some races out of bounds, given the era, and tech should be from the Rebellian era.

Edited the character proposal with some of the basic information you supplied. Will probably stick with a Human character, for sake of ease.

setting traps - Depending on the type of trap, probably Mechanics or Survival

disabling computers - Use Computer, if you're doing it via the system itself.

rigging bombs - Mechanics

Ok. So, depending on the setup, would I be able to focus on Stealth, Deception, Initiative, Mechanics, and Computers? Or is that too many skills for one character?

Edit:
Currently looking into getting access to core rules, so hopefully I'll be able to do a bit of this research for myself. Thank you for your patience explaining it all so far.

Deception and Use Computer wouldn't be class skills, so while you could use them, they'd not be as strong as some other skills you'd have. You pick out a number of trained skills, based on your class and intelligence. Some classes get more trained skills than others.

Ah, I gotcha. So a lot of the PFRPG / D&D rules have their parallels here. Alrighty, I'll see what I can come up with.

Edit:

Might need to change the name, since I am now looking at a Kel Dor Camouflage scout.

hmmm this might be just what I'm looking for....I have a couple ideas for system games floating around in my own head but haven't felt comfortable jumping into system play here....OK one question for you. Are you allowing the Miralukan Race? I'm looking at a scoundrel maybe an ex-smuggler or ex-bounty hunter. Perhaps he'd progress into a Jedi later but I am not looking to do that right away, if at all.

I have no issue with a Miralukan, but I'm only intending this game to be a one off scenario, so people can get a feel for system gaming. I'm not looking at running a full campaign.

ahh I read your intention to be a short one shot campaign to serve as an intro to system so that you could roll those players into a larger campaign after we had gotten comfortable. My mistake. I'm fine with that though. Is their a specific sheet you want us to fill out?

If the group wants to go on into a campaign afterwards, it's certainly possible. I'm just planning to run a few different one off scenarios for different systems, to introduce people to system gaming.

I haven't got a sheet together yet. I'm looking to see if I can find a nice easy to use one online, but most of them are pdfs for pen and paper play, or rather impressive excel files.

I once had a star wars droid named Delta 7, basicly he was one of the new seperast commando droids from the Clone Wars Animated series, turned out they could be player characters because they had the capacity to go independent due to their intelligence, they got brainscrubbed after every battle.
Delta fought through that hellish world known as Fulucia, and was in the field so much he developed independence, when the Republic mopped up he avoided capture, and fled to the fringe.
the Republic would scrap him, the CIS would whipe his brain clean...
but he was a badass soldier, weapon specialist type.
mostly our DM was too hyped up on  "it's staaaar waaaars!" to weve a story that did more than had the empire try to hunt us down, and our ship went down on every world he thought was cool.
not good for role playing... but lots of explosions and gun battles...
the only characters I could role play with were an HK droid (going crime lord) and a perverted Force Sensitive we picked up on hoth (she had a thing for droids for some reason... the funniest moment of the game was when she cried out "OH DELTA" while using a vibro knife, he was walking by and thought she was in trouble... he completely ignored that she was butt ass nude and trying to be seductive and just walked away.)
