Well it is official.
I wish i could properly translate my anger through text. This whole administration has brought more shame to the country then every other act of incompetence ever.

Tolvo

You know it's weird, this is inhuman and illegal as far as I'm concerned, but I actually expected worse. I wonder if that's the intended reaction among a sea of horrible things.

So The Church of Satan sues the new Sabrina series for the use of Baphomet.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/tv/news/netflix-warner-bros-hit-with-dollar50m-suit-over-satanic-deity-in-chilling-adventures-of-sabrina/ar-BBPukSV?ocid=spartandhp

Isn't Baphomet like public domain at this point? So, shouldn't they be free to do whatever they want with it?

Satanic Temple, not Church of Satan.

The statue was copyrighted actually hence the lawsuit. It wasn't a generic image but a very specific statue.

QuoteThe show’s creators did not utilize a generic Sabbatic goat that is commonly used in many occult circles, such as the image created by Eliphas Levi, but instead created an identical and easily identifiable replica of TST’s statue. Unlike most imagery associated with Satanism, the unique Baphomet statue designed and built for TST is copyrighted, which grants the creator exclusive rights to determine whether, and under what conditions, this original work may be used by others. When one does not actively protect their copyright material, especially by legal means, it becomes more and more difficult to establish standing as more and more egregious violations occur.

QuoteI think it's the height of ignorance to deem pursuance of our copyright claim here as frivolous. As I stated earlier, would it be easier to understand if it were a real-world Mosque depicted as the headquarters for a terrorist cell? Would you expect, or even want, that to be laughed off? What about Blood Libel fiction that names a real-world Jewish group? Our Baphomet monument is a unique design that developed over the course of a year and a half of deliberation and hard-won financing. We are not claiming copyright over all interpretations of Baphomet, but we're certainly claiming copyright over the one we've designed and which has become an iconic central image of our organization. I dictated the design elements of this monument, and I simply can't laugh off its use to portray a patriarchal cannibalistic cult, or see it hereafter known as "Sabrina monument." I think it's a byproduct of people failing to take Satanism seriously as a religious identification, their ignorance of the "Satanic Panic," and just a general form of stupidity that causes anybody to suggest we're overreacting, but my own perspective is that this one is entirely a no-brainer: we're obligated to pursue a claim on this one, and those who identify us should know that we will always do our best to protect the their interests by protecting ourselves from encroachments against our intellectual property, as well as against slanderous representations of what believe and how we practice.
Lucien Greaves, the head of Satanic Temple.

Full disclosure, I am a member of the satanic temple.

Ah I didn't catch that they said the wrong one. I just remembered the aspect of it being about the depiction of the statue being owned. I don't think many know those are two very different organizations(I'm not fond of the CoS), though since they involve using the figure of Satan it does make sense to confuse them.

Sara Nilsson

Its a common enough problem. But yeah it is two very different organizations :) If I had a dime for everytime I heard people be confused...

Is that an accurate comparison? I ask because I didn't actually know that there was a difference until now.

I do know the CoS has been super transphobic(They like to also harass lots of people on social media including trans people) and recently did change their rules about birth gender ID's after outcry about it.

It is pretty accurate. Abbreviated but accurate :) Comparing the tenents gives a pretty good picture of either organization.

Wow he's a special kind of asshole.

I can't stand this guy. My boyfriend's father watches his segment religiously and almost everything he says is ridiculous. He one time countered an argument to support banning balloons for environmental reasons by saying that, basically, women go out and buy the newest pair of Lululemon pants and just throw them away anyways so why bother with balloons.. UM, I ain't throwing away an $80 pair of pants!

You know to be fair, I kinda of wondered if he lied about it all, but I didn't want to give into my own biases. So I just treated it as news and what we knew. But it kinda did sound like a weird story and I don't know if we should be really surprised a guy who lies basically for his job to lie about this.

Tolvo

Yeah he's not a great guy. Not to mention their defense of the Alt Right in the past and featuring them and interviewing them. But again, these are people the president has defended before or been hard pressed to "Disavow" like when Trump refused to condemn the former Grand Wizard of the Klu Klux Klan for a while.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2018/08/11/donald-trump-charlottesville-anniversary-condemn-all-racism/965715002/

That rally which ended in the murder of an antifascist by a Neo Nazi by the way featured the Nationalist Socialist Movement, Richard Spencer, and the Daily Stormer to name a few. Many of which on camera chanted "Gas the [Slur for Jews], Race War Now!" while sieg heiling. Tucker defended those people.

By the way the whole thing it was allegedly about with those Confederate statues? Mostly built due to the Daughters of the Confederacy, a white supremacy group tied to the KKK that were actively rewriting history to make the Confederates more sympathetic and to support white supremacy. Most of those were built in the 1900's.

https://www.npr.org/2017/08/20/544266880/confederate-statues-were-built-to-further-a-white-supremacist-future

But, I guess that maybe would require its own thread on the rise of White Supremacy in the USA today.

On the topic of WW1, I learnt the other day that there are a number of "ghost villages" in eastern France (especially around Verdun): places that were so completely destroyed by the ground fighting that once the war was over, it was deemed unfeasible to rebuild them. Not only had the the houses and farms been razed, but the fields around them were so packed with explosives, landmines, dead bodies, shells and poison gas that it would be useless as farmland for hundreds of years.  :-( Some of these communities were designated "a village that died for France".

Yes. There are definitely nogo zones. Similar but different, in Italy there are areas that could never recover from the black plague and are still deserted, or with a low population. I have actually never been to Verdun, though a relative of mine is a guide for all kinds of places like that.

It's apparently the third or fourth time someone plans to attack Macron this year. Only Trump loves him. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-macrons-bromance-continues-kisses-praise/story?id=54694470

Macron's mess up is made worse by the Kristallnacht remembrance ceremonies all over. I grew up going to ceremonies a lot, mostly WWII, occasionally WWI, but now they're more likely to turn bad (fights and more, apparently some morons disturbed a Kristallnacht ceremony in Germany yelling Allahu Akbar, can't find the article I first read…)

I don't see any reason to mince words. If Tucker Carlson is not a white nationalist himself (I believe he is), he is at best the voice of white nationalists on mainstream television.

TheVillain

Yeah, I'll say those Antifa at his house went to far for the sake of his wife and kids, but for Tucker himself - fuck him. When you spend Decades advocating using governmental power to raid the houses and kill people you don't agree with, you don't get to complain when people chant at you.

To be fair, you're pitting the word of a known liar vs. the word of someone who hates said liar, and neither one is a particularly good source for truth.

Yea, Thinkprogress is literally a propaganda arm for the Center for American Progress Action Fund, and just recently it got temporarily banned for straight up spreading fake news of Facebook.

Might as well post Breitbart while we are at it.

Media Bias rates it as 'strong left' to Breitbart's 'Extreme Right', but that doesn't undermine your point in any way. Id want a more centrist viewpoint myself before finalizing my conclusions.

Honestly, I wouldn't read one single source of news and conclude that it's true anymore. It sucks, but the more you cross-check, the closer to the truth you are likely to get. Of course you can get your news just from one source alone, but never think you are getting the whole truth.

The fact that 'reputable' news sites are now starting to look like Breitbart and whatever left-leaning equivalent there is, is kinda disgusting. But that's just me whining.
