World of Darkness: Chicago
« on: June 22, 2006, 01:46:46 PM »
Since my Exalted game is going underway and I'm verifying character sheets and my other game I have is more of one I don't really need to intervene with the players unless a problem or a specification needs to be added, I decided to host a World of Darkness game based in Chicago. Why? Because WoD: Chicago has not one, not two, but all three major power player Supernaturals in the city working together [and against each other]. What does that mean? Well, it means you can be either a Kindred, Uratha or an Awakened in the same city. Since the city is so vast, so detailed and rich with history, you can come from many backgrounds and supernatural bringings. Since nWoD's policy is "not all Vampires hate Werewolves that hage Mages and such" It's more of a mixed bag of treats. You can work with or work against the other supernatural, but Chicago is clearly large enough for all three to work together in dark harmony.

At any rate, I was wondering if anyone would care to play in this vast, rich city full of deciet, lust, ambition and such? I'm allowing core rules, but I do have hold of Armory, so if you have a gun you want specifically, I can check to see if it is in the book, give you the resource cost and go from there. I also own a couple other books, the only genre I'm afraid I don't have much sub-resources for [if any at all] is Mage: The Awakening. Sofar, the genre hasn't released a book that has screamed out "Buy me!" for it's importance, but I am currently looking over a few books to see if I should buy.

Now, this game will be group based with mulitple supernaturals and multiple background stories. But seeing as It's not going to be three seperate games, I'm going to have all the supernaturals work together [or against each other] amongst a series of plots that shakes up all the lives [and unlife] of these three super powers. Now, the real question is... are you up to face the windy city?

OOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOODY VAMPIRE? Is it oWoD or nWoD I don't have the latter rules.

Any limit on Clans like no True Brujah or Old Clan Tzimisce- just asking. Not I'll run anything that strange. Any non-official sources allowed like the Blisser bloodline?

It's nWoD, not oWoD. If it was oWoD it sure as hell wouldn't be a nice crossover. It'd be a lot of blood and guts. And eh, Bloodlines are not allowed at start without any real definition and I wish to keep it via book. Or, if I created a Bloodline, you could be a part of it.

Awwww, I don't have much of nWoD... Remember, of course, while the White Wolf guys may get mad at you for playing the game in a way they didn't envision, they're emo nerds- What are they going to do? * joking face.* Still... Well, if I can get ahold of nWoD, I might play a Mage. So fun. ;D

Z.K. mentioned this to me last night and as I told her either an uratha or mage interested me. From what I heard this is certianly an interesting idea so hopefully we can get a good number of people to participate in the game.

Regarding the nWoD books and rules. Im certainly an advocate for everyone getting the NWoD rules. I think the games just been massively updated for the 4 exsisting groups and allows for a greater range of creativity by both storytellers and players. At the very least, they make for a very interesting read. That said, anyone that needs help figuring out the system is free to contact me at any time.

Well I'll play but need help with a character maybe starting as a mortal with real promise in some areas might be better, after all then the template can just be tacked on after some vampire has his way with her. lol

You have to start out as a supernatural at first. But the way nWoD is handled, all supernatural traits are a template added on later on after they [are Embraced, have their First Change or Awaken].

Well I was thinking of a character and thought as a mortal part go for ex-military, Army Intelligence with a knack for networking so has her own intelligence network in the city. Sort of a high end broker for information, investigation and hiring third party detectives for parties not wanting to be noticed. She would be disciplined, well-educated (West Point and a PhD in Political Science), mannered well,  bit ruthless and out of the closet lesbian. Age lets see 50 years old with West Point, 30 Years in Service and retired on a full pension.

So what faction and clans would people recommend?

Hmmmm... Brujah, Ventrue, Nosferatu, or possibly Toreador, though Brujah are a bit chaotic for that, Nosferatu might be a tad dangerous for the party going, and Toreadors are a bit artsy.

This is just from my knowledge of oWoD, to warn you.

Brujahs no longer exist. There is a Bloodline called "Bruja" but they're a Bloodline of the Gangrel and eh, they're only in the Southwest California region. Toreador is a Bloodline as well, for the Daeva.

The Clans are Daeva, Gangrel, Mekhet, Nosferatu and Ventrue.

As well Nalla, I want people to play as a supernatural, not as a pet of one.

Well, seeing as Chicago is a predominantely Invictus and Lancea Sanctum ruled city, the next powers would be Ordo Dracul, Carthian Movement, Circle of the Crone, Unbound, Belail's Brood and VII.

That's the number of Covenant power in Chicago...and yes, both Belail's Brood and VII are in it.

And yes...for those still curious, Kindred can have sex and enjoy it too. Get off to it also. Just, that' it's a physical thing and no emotional thing. So, it's a selfish kind of [getting myself off] kind of thing. Although the Kindred may "want" to get their partner off. Sex is used between even Kindred to gain information, it's a well played tactic of the Invictus, although, as a Kindred degenerates with age, frenzy or whatever inhuman horror, their tastes become jaded and obscured. Kindred elders who still enjoy going through the act of sex...tend to do BDSM [Heavy, Medium styles, rarely Light] for example.

I found a nice list with the archetypes used for each clan to get a general idea if it accurate:

Daeva: Vampire as sexual predator
Gangrel: Vampire as predatory hunter
Mekhet: Vampire as shadowy lorekeeper
Nosferatu: Vampire as monstrous skulker
Ventrue: Vampire as aristocratic lord.

So for me if I go for the individual agent as in no network, attractive, charismatic and ambitious but with a good education and military indoctrination so is presentable Daeva or Ventrue are most likely.

If a power broker behind the scenes shadowy manipulator Mekhet or Ventrue are most likely. Seeing the rules a bot I will go for the first option a highly trained ex-Army Intelligence officer maybe a very attractive upper 30's having 20 years in for a half-pension plus her savings.

So I will go with a Daeva.

As for Covenant forgeting the nutballs like Belial's Blood she might be a vampire but is not a monster- with great power comes responsibility after all. Invictus (ok she respects power, is ambitious and is willing to submit her will to a superior they would LOVE her), Lancea Sanctum (ok there again morale and having years of service to a good cause they again might love her), Ordo Dracul (educated and skilled, fresh modern blood- ok they are a good choice), Carthian Movement (she's young, ambitious and talented in modern areas and they seem to take anyone), Circle of the Crone (too religious and old worldly), Unbound and the remaining are just not a good fit she is not evil enough in one case and in other cases just not a good fit).

So looks to me Daeva
Bloodline- Any Ideas?
Covenant will be Invictus (she is used to waiting to advance in the military, follows orders but in her case might refuse but not likely unless her unlife is at risk and is properly mannered but with modern skills and talents- seems to me a nice fit)

And there can be worst things than being an attractive and talented vampire attached to the ruling covenant even if young.

Virtue: any ideas if I can make one up it might be Loyalty (as in is loyal to those in command and to friends- a rare vampire trait) but any ideas here?
Vice: Lust (ok is a Daeva that blood is going to have some side effects)

Concept: Trained Operative

I will need help on attributes and skills but this is a good start I hope.

Now be mindful Ruby, those are in fact, stereotypes. There are Bloodlines, types of Kindred and indivuals that go against the stereotypes all together.

As well, there is a Nosferatu Bloodline that has an eerie ability to be inhuman beautiful, as if they had Striking Looks +3 [Since Striking Looks usually only goes up to +2, it is inhuman beauty].

Really? Well good thing I have a brilliant and nice GM to help me.

Well in that case I might go for a more seclusive vampire not into politicing at court, ravishingly beautiful and charming, passionate and for fun make her a brilliant artist (just does her art for herself hiding her genius in her haven in secret vaults but a merit would fall there and seeing them would make a vampire artist be shocked at her genius if they would ever see one).

So Nosferatu
Bloodline: ???
Covenant: Invictus (doesn't care about the politics or power building but they also tend to be in power and given several hundred years she can eventually gain prestige some- but doesn't care Sire would find this out too late however)

Virtue: any ideas here- I was thinking Compassionate (having power and money she would want to help mortals even if behind the scenes)
Vice: not lust she enjoys being with select lovers not just for sex or pleasure so not lustful any ideas?

Cioncept: Lover of the Night

Is beautiful, rich, a vampire and has the world at her talons but not ambitious just loves existing. Supports the Invictus Covenant because they are in power and they tend to see to her security no use shaking the Status Quo is good and doing so is bad. But has good points she devotes her free time to aiding the needy mortals even if through agents, would help other vampires if they need her help and work a bit to get some power just to protect herself. Supports the Traditions for they protect her and her race.

Flaw: not butt ugly lol- maybe a psychological flaw any good ideas GM?

I like this better might be more fun for me and her Sire would figure out too late she's not a good choice to excel in her Covenant.

Heh- you put it out and didn't say that. (pout)

Ok same idea-

Clan: Daeva
Bloodline: must be one artistic one in the city
Covenant: Invictus

That would work but in her case she does art for HERSELF and cares nothing for clan or covenant politics beyond a minimal necessary to be respectable. In other words seeks some influence and such to protect herself and be useful but stays off everyones respective radars, is artistic just save she doesn't show her art as its personal and for her own reflection. So would likely be just strange to her Sire she would know of her progenies genius just she hides it- thereby refusing her the glory of having a genius as a childe.

For role-playing I'm going for the go-to kindred regardless of covenant unless just wrong (Belial or VII are clearly bad) she would offer support if asked of new vampires- some money or a small favor at no expectation of it being returned in kind or just a friendly ear to talk to. Would host parties for younger vampires to gather and talk about matters and be a social sort- turning into a good ambassador of sorts for her elders even if not intentional. Her influence and like won't be high but can have maybe a police report lost or a police report dissappeared before it becomes a serious matter- or evidence altered. Blood samples switched as an example.

Subtle uses that leave her off her superioprs radar but if used well can be just as effective. Will have money. Not sure what else.

Art Medium: Computer Graphics and Animation (can keep the art on CD's hidden in her haven and encrypted so only she can savor her work)

Maybe we should keep this simple for me let me do a basic concept and some notes about my character as a mortal then work out the clan and all. And yes I would spend 3 background point for a bloodline if it fit my character concept. For me this is about role-playing not combat and all or doing the ideal character.

Well, just concidering you only get 7 background points at start of play. That is why. And a lot of Merits cost a lot of points to buy.

Oh I see, well then it kind of depends.  ;)

As for merits I tend to tread lightly there if i do take a merit or flaw its for flavor not to abuse the system. Like if I take in oWoD Blush of Health I might take Selective Digestion so they cancel out. I found usually overdoing these are a bad idea. GM's love abusing flaws. lol

So don't expect me to go nuts there just a tad for flavor maybe a merit or two and flaw or two that fit the character.

Now for my character her name will be Sabine St. Marie a Creole from New Orleans that relocated after Hurrican Katrina (or another storm) to Chicago and will be good looking, pleasant company and general desirable to be with but not so much she can't blend into the crowd some. Professionally I was thinking about this and decided a Animation and Graphic Artist of genius would fit the modern age making a good income from several hot computer games she created but not to the full scope of her art that she keeps hidden save for her pleasure. In simple terms she holds back doing public work and not in private letting her genius soar. Likely attracting to her her Sire but her Sire also will find too late she has no interest in clan politics and showing off her genius as its a personal thing to be shared after her Final Death with the world. Hopefully that will not happen for a long time.

Will be a younger Kindred so have lots of room to grow maybe being  a vampire a few weeks- enough to get the basics down and her disciplines but nothing else. So will not have influence and the like to start but would have other assets some wealth, bloodline maybe we can talk about that.

As for her education I plan to make Sabine around 30 so will have a BA in Philosophy from Byyn Mawr, a BS Computer Animation and Graphics from MIT and a few years in industry as a game designer. A modern well rounded woman with a fine education.

So that is a good start I was thinking for a clan Daeva is most likely, Covenant likely the Carthian Movement so her Sire would be a younger vampire but likely artistic and bloodline if I took one I would need the GM input here of the ones in the city. Still optional I may not do that but would add flavor.

Eh, Merits is the new "background" They took Merits and merged them with backgrounds and bam. There you have. Merits. The new omnipotent advantage.

Flaws are worse, ten times worse. And you get no bonus points for them anyway, since bonus points have been eliminated all together from the system. You only have "Starting characters" And then you have starting XP which is like the fabled BP of old.

It's nWoD afterall, not oWoD.

I made some changes I did decide in a change in concept though. Although a fine writer and scholar with lots of potential she was embraced by her Sire to be a food source due to her advanced age and power OR her Sire's liking of Kindred Blood. I figure this would make for fun role-playing and as her Mentor would want her to be content after all she's not a ghoul or mortal but a companion should expect gifts and the like for loyalty freely given. Right now she is newly released but de facto under the support of her Elder and would offer benefits. Like support in building a Retainer base so she can safely feed to feed her Sire better, opportunities for gaining resources and assets to be more useful and secure herself long term and the like. Along these lines she has a low resources (guess who paid to send her to college), good looks but not too high but turns heads and a high Mentor rating (face it the Kindred Elder has to be aged and potent to need only Vampire vitae to live or have the luxury of keeping such a special retainer). *I can lower that and add a dot in resources if you like.*

Not to mention the clear protection as a valued asset herself her Sire is less likely not to protect her and offer her advice and counsel. After all a reliable source of food that they cannot become blood tied to is a major asset. I assume a Sire cannot be blood bound to his or her childe if that changed let me know.

But I think this could work out she would likely push for more resources and her own haven eventually , retainers to keep her fed (much more secure than Herd and more reliable) and some help getting her Masters degree locally- a personal goal.

Now with that I need any attribute boost if any for her clan and disciplines two in clan and one out of clan her Sire knows...logical she would have learned that from the Sire.

Daeva get Celerity, Majesty and Vigor as Disciplines...yep, they get TWO physical Disciplines.

And you can either pick Dexterity or Manipulation as a bonus attribute.

Good I can continue then and I need to work out her Sire in this case who it is is important. I can go with a Elder but not high up politically for a Mentor 3 (can be old yet) or an Advisor to the Prince sort or just scary old behind the scenes at Mentor 4. I would ask for a female Kindred since she is going to be gay and most likely would be a sexual partner when it suits her Sire but mostly is food. And I don't think that is unusual to arrange that after all at some point mortal blood is no longer useful and if nothing else is not as tasty. lol

I'm going to treat her relationship as a favored employee one for now and might get more intimate as her Sire trusts the childe that would likely be the case but your the GM so we need to define this in PM. If I drop Mentor 1 as it suits your campaign I can add a point in Resources or something else.

Manipulation definately get those sneaky aspects in there from her vitae. lol

Her background will be a fine mnided and talented mortal of a very modest background in the distant family of her Sire in the region, discretely supported through school up to her BA and lured into Chicago where she was seduced, told of her Sires plans and offered immortality. Taking it clearly. Her ancestory will be African-American with anglo blood and of exceptional stock. Likely an addition to her household and above any ghoul and most Kindred servants. And yes she would have demanded security investments made to her in her name, educational help, debit card and enough money for her needs and the like once she is settled in and all. Nothing to tax a wealthy and powerful Kindred but would make her happy. Of course on her side she plans to study Kindred Politics, how to gain power and influence and the like from the inside. Enough so later she can be taken more seriously.  ;)

I'd drop a dot in Mentor and put it with resources or contacts. Since it's Invictus, usually only Elders, Junior Elders or Ancillae sire.

Sex is still used to gain information and such for the Invictus. As well, it isn't uncommon for an Elder to endulge it, even if it was to keep them from falling more to the Beast. As well, there is politics too...and they get boring at times.

Ok but heck she's food, pleasant company and likely a groomable asset for the future but who wants a meal to be unpleasant looking.  :D

Anyone the Kiss is still erotic and pleasurable so its not like its work.  ;)

I went with Ally the Chicago representative of the foundation run by Gates and his wife, would be good for later for grants for starting charitiable enterprises and the like locally. Have to have a power base and why not Charities they are socially influential, above reproach legally, give access to other avenues of power and are any area she can grow without interference from her Covenants elders. Plus fits her virtue and will let her maintain her humanity better. Is that ok for an ally?

One step. I assume free will is important to her Sire makes her more pleasant to be with and since its likely for Sabine more than the blood talking she will likely love her Sire to start. But why mess with her meal ticket she is nice enough, powerful, part of the strongest Covenant, respects her some and is likely good in bed- can be worst fates? Anyway sex is fun and her vice is Lust.  ;)

I chose an ally background as noted above since she will seek power through public charities (one area she can grow in not stepping on Elders and betters her position) made her the Chicago representative of the uber funded Gates Foundation. Will need start up funds for her charities and support and would hate to step in asking her Sire for help unless needed. Wants to prove herself to her Convenant she is more than food for a powerful Elder.

I see then maybe another Covenant.  ;D

The Carthian Movement maybe are their any Elders that old attached to it?

Ordo Dracul could also work and they seem third in overt power I didn't know a full blood bond was enforced so that kind of sucks to be Invictus. On the other hand being blood bound to a vampire that is powerful, likes her (ok is a vampire but is at least tending to be strongly favorable to her) and likely will take care of her like a favored pet is not horrible. She might be good staying right where I put her.  ???

If nothing else might be allowed to test her wings and built up a power base later getting freed way down the road. And she can share blood with her Sire always a pleasure...

Ok go for the Invictus why not in any way she is going to get bound to a vampire sooner or later.

It isn't enforced, they have Blood Oaths, which keep from the vassal and the regent from abusing each other in power or loopholes. Call it a fail-safe although, as it benefits both.

ZK, do you have an openning in this game for elder characters?  I'm a vet WoD Vampire player, and have an idea for "the opposition" type of character.  I could help with moving storylines forward, etc.  I'm interested in this game, but I do not play neonates very well at all.

Neonates can be fun but it would be nice if you play normal mortals to start. Maybe in some later rules for the game.

Hell you can generally only go up in the supernatural world at this point- or piss of an Elder and get eaten. lol.

All characters start out as a mortal before you add the supernatural template. And eh, I want you to begin start of play as the supernatural. The prelude will not be played out, if I did for all these PCs, it'd be months before the actual game started.

As for Elders, Elders have to play it smart, it isn't like oWoD. There have been neonates in nWoD that have killed and bested an Elder with ease. Sure, they have to strategize, but, being old gives you no power, being wise, know how to play and such does. Afterall, if being old gave you power, there would be a lot more surviving Invictus Elders then there are now.

I'm really just not interested in playing the grunt at the bottom of the ladder anymore.  I'm really itching to play a WoD game, but I don't think the ADD is gonna hold out long enough for my character to actually be a "power player" in the political intrigue arena if we're all gonna be rank and file neonates.  Where I'm at now with Vampire, I like being the hand that moves the pawns, not the pawn.  I just don't see Vampire like D&D, where you've got levels and such and have to start from the bottom so that you're rewarded with "kewl" powers as you "level up".  It's all about the role for me, and the neonate role just doesn't do it for me anymore.

Well than do a concept that promotes that and pick the right Covenant. The Carthian Movement has lots of room for Meritocracy advancement I would think a blood cult master or an espionage background type could go far if they had the skill, testicular fortitude and luck.

And no Prelude then but I do need to define something of the Sire-Childe bond and relationship with you its going to be a key aspect of Sabine's role in the game to start.

nWoD doesn't really do the heavy 'Elder vs. Neonate' dichotomy. Neonates and new comers may not have all the nifty toys that their Elders possesses, but Elders are no longer invincible, invulnerable and 'better than you at everything, always and forever'.

Look at the Invictus for all their valted power young members especially the newly embraced have major strong points. They understand and can use modern technology, are more open minded and urbane as a rule and often are willing to be ambitious developing domains themselves that branch off from the Elders interests.

As far as I can tell Elders biggest strengths are more disciplines and connections but at a basic level though they all seem to be the same strength of the blood in raw ability.

If I can get some more Mage and Uratha players, we can go.

Since this will be an adult orientated game [with WoD overtones] It'll be dark and erotic in it's own right.

And yes, the Uratha do have strong sexual tension as the book says, with Primal Urge increases, the more horny they get. :D

It's just an expression hon, but some Uratha might take it litterally. Uratha make great lovers and then, at times, really horrible ones. Being truly unable to control their emotions [in the sense of turning down], They love hard. But, Uratha would be as dedicated to you, if more so if you're loyal.

No, it would be more of one thread since in the new WoD, the supernaturals do not hate one another automatically. There are exceptions, but those are exceptions. As for the supernaturals in Chicago, they actually work together, afterall, they're all living there and it's large enough for all of them. None are complaining [aside from the exceptions], so, it's quite alright, in fact, all three major super-powers have contacts and allies amongst the other supernaturals.

hee hee hee Well it would be a nice treat.

Seriously food is kind of important to her a vessel for her Sire must be kept well fed. So if she doesn't feed on humans what is the common drink of choice is there a slaughter house with a bar for Kindred underneath or something. She can exist on animal blood but wouldn't call it living but until she gets several reliable retainers she needs something her mistress would approve of and pay for.

Well, usually, in the Invictus, Kindred are high in Blood Potency, so high, they feed on the paiges [aka Neonates in Invictus] as food. Since when you go up in Blood Potency, so does your tastes. Only Blood Potency 1 and 2 can feed on Animals+, 3-6 can feed on Humans+ and well, Blood Potency 7-10 have to feed on other Kindred.

Well my character has to feed my Elder that means I would have to feed and since her Blood Potency is 1 animals will do for her, just how does a vampire of her needs feed safely?

I take it her Sire would want her to be full as much as possible and until she gets lets say 5 retainers for that or some asset to allow her to feed safely on mortal blood animals would have to do. So where do the weak Kindred go to feed does any more elder Vampires run a slaughterhouse bar or something- just curious.

After all I would think an Invictus would avoid risky hunting and her Sire would unlikely want her vassal used for feeding to be so exposed as to risk her or her valuable food supply.

EDIT:  My character's name is Scarlet and she is a New Moon Bone Shadow.  She's just getting used to being a werewolf and interacting with the Spirit World.  While she's always felt that there was more to Heaven and Earth than what they taught in school and never really bought into what they preached about on Sunday, she never imagined it was anything like this.

When Scarlet left her small midwestern suburb to go to college in the big city, her curiosity about everything got her involved in new age occultism.  She joined a neo-pagan coven for a time, but when she couldn't find the answers she was looking for, she left.  She tried tantra and yoga and other forms of Eastern mysticism next but she still didn't have any luck.

Then she had the misfortune one evening of being attacked by spirit riding some poor vagrant.  The contact with the spirit sparked her First Change.  As she would soon discover, this was not by chance, but had been arranged by a pack of Uratha.  After discovering her, they had watched her for some time to see if she would undergo the Change.  They became impatient and decided to force the issue by chasing the possessed man to her.

Initially enraged at their motives, Scarlet quickly decided to follow them.  Scarlet had always known the world was bigger than it seemed.  She finally found what she had been looking for and she wanted to know everything there was to know about spirits, the Spirit World, and the Uratha.  She was quickly indoctrinated into Uratha society and voraciously consumed every tidbit and morsel of spirit lore the pack had to share.  When it was exhausted, she went on the road, dropping out of school and determined to discover every secret about the Spirit World she could find.

So that's about it.  Scarlet has just set off on her own and her first stop was the Windy City.

I'll post a character sheet later.

Seeing a WoD game, especially one run by you Z.K and are history from the days at New Breman and the unmoderated chats of white wolf in owod.   I have found myself wanting to create a character for the game set in Chicago.

The next question I have is the forsaken allowed, can I be a  uratha.

It's an multi-venue game. Where the characters come from different origins and work together, since I can't get enough players of all venues, it was frozen. Good to see some people want to fill in the Uratha roles.

By the way the game looks, if I do actually start this, it will be mainly a Mage and an Uratha game.
