So maybe RD-D2 has a built-in Ipad!

Apparently, technologists have tinkered around with the Ipad to the point where they can make it display three-dimensional holographic images. I can see a great use for this in the future of advertising (gives whole new meaning to the term "pop-up"!)

I'm currently in the process of negotiating a deal with Apple to purchase 100 Ipads for my department so students can use them in the campus labs; I would love to see this in action.

Watch the video at the bottom too.

Good man, Hairy; I hadn't even thought of that.

Hey, who do you think drives technology advances? ;)

Hopefully my own iPad can support 3D holograms. *Snickers and thinks about the possibilities*

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this just a technique for them to allow them to create 3D effects on pictures cheaply? The video was talking about filming the iPad as it played the cross sectional images and then using those to extrude a 3D image on to a rendered photograph of the scene.  That's a far stretch from anything as interesting as a real 3D hologram.

Fuckin' holograms, how do they work?

*Snicker.*

But, yeah, what Neroon said. Making 3D porn that way seems kinda purpose-defeating.

Neroon

Shame really, as it could be the up-and-coming technology.

Are there certain things you really want to see flying out of the screen right at your face though?  ;)

Wait until you can plug into the film and experience it first hand. Porn, slasher/horror and war flicks will never be the same

HairyHeretic

I think we're a ways from simsense broadcasting yet.

That being said, letting people see what war is actually like might make them less keen to actually start them.

Are you talking about where they take a picture, then take the picture from a slightly different angle (Like, very slightly) and then just shift back and forth between the two very fast like the picture is dancing? O-o

Neroon

No.  It's for creating the illusion in a photograph that the people in it are looking at a 3D hologram.  So if you have this software, you'll be able to produce picturs of yourself with a hologram in front of you.  You won't, however, have a hologram jumping out of your iPad.  Neither will the picture you produce be in 3D.

Neroon is right. This isn't nearly as cool as I first thought it was.
