I know a lot of people on here play (or have played) various pen and paper Rpg systems, but I was curious as to how many (if any) of you play (or have played) any MMORPGs (oh yeah, gotta love that mouthful of a term - and it stands for Massively Multiplayer Online RPG incase anyone is reading this and wondering what the heck I'm talking about!).

Personally I only started playing them at the beginning of this year, as up until then I was stuck on a mediocre 56k dial up connection (wonders how he ever managed to download porn on a connection that slow - builds a lot of patience in a persons character, let me tell you!).

I started with WoW (World of Warcraft - again for those of you who don't know) and for a while I was enjoying myself. I liked the cartoony graphics, and how quite a lot of the game was very user friendly (why the hell did my DM never think of employing huge yellow exclamation marks over the heads of NPCs with information and quests for us when we used to play?!), but eventually the lack of depth, lack of ability to customise your characters, and the generally bad community killed it for me. But it served its purpose - I got to level 40, got me a nice Raptor mount, and then retired - it had shown me that I could enjoy these sorts of games, and that now I was ready to play with the big boys (oooh errr).

And so I've just started playing EQ2 (Everquest 2) and I'm enjoying it immensely (playing a Kerra - basically a big kitty cat with a bad attitude). There is a lot more depth in the character customisation (still not enough for my liking - but in my opinion you can never have too many options in life for any choice!), the world looks more realistic and believable to me (well, compared to WoW's cartoony feel anyway - not sure cat people, lizard people and frog people can even look realistic unless you are on some very hardcore drugs!), and I've actually met some people who were helpful rather than complete morons...

So, after all that rambling from me, how many of you guys and girls play any MMO's?

*Waits for the tumbleweeds to enter the thread*

I was never big for the MMORPG's, mostly because of the cost.  Buying the game, paying for the internet then paying a monthly scription just for the right to play said game, it was pointless and would cost too much.  Tho I would have thrown all that into the wind to play City of Heros and the upcomming sequal, City of Villians.

TonyWoods

I know what you mean - justifying paying an extra £10 or so a month to play a game is a little steep, and I had always swore off MMO's for that exact reason until I started working.

Now instead of having quite a lot of time and no money, I now have quite a lot of money and no time.

Gotta love how the world and life in general works out huh?

Well, at least you have money... :D

I used to play with MUDs, which had some surprisingly deep characters and environments as well.  Since I love text descriptions, the lack of the graphics didn't bother me that much.  Besides, many had quite a bit of adult fun going on semi-covertly or with a blind eye turned to it by the admins.

No, the avatar image isn't me, but it is a good representation of the characters I like.

I'm a beta tester for CoV. I believe you'd like it if you enjoyed CoH.

I started off playing EverCrack way back when it first came out, and as I was in the Marines, with no bills, but plenty of free time after hours, I enjoyed it.  My biggest problem, is that my friends would keep moving servers, and would all level much faster than myself, so I never had a character make it past level 10 before I had to up and move.  I bought the first expansion for it, then gave up when they suddenly popped out 10 more expansions.  And yes, I know it's an exaggeration, but still...

After that, I gave up on the games for a while, but hopped back in when Star Wars Galaxies came out, and was instantly addicted.  I've also dabbled in Final Fantasy XI and City of Heros, as well as an older one called Anarchy Online, and now a newer one called Eve Online.  While I thoroughly enjoy Eve, I suggest grabbing a thick book as it's a real-time game, taking hours, or even days to train up skills, rather than build experience and suddenly buy or acquire the skill.  Plus travel time is a bit tedious as well.

But all in all, the biggest turn-off for me to the MMORPG is the online fee, even though I understand why they ask for it, which is maintenance and upgrade fees.

Guild Wars is a free mmorpg. As for Anarchy Online's basic. I'm an old Anarchy Online player myself. I hated Final Fantasy XI. It was too muddied for my taste.

I know I'll love it, if my computer could handle it, I had the money, and I didn't spend all my time here!  I think it's better this way. :)

PuckElf

lol  Yes, there is always that.  I'd like to try Guild Wars, though, if it didn't run $50.  But all in all, it might still be worth it.

I play in several and am heavily involved in a online computer game. NWN. Never Winter Nights. I'm a player/DM in ALFA. A Land Far Away. It has no cost to play, other than buying the games, and you can play with a dialup connection. Which I do, because that is all that I have. I've been there two years and I love it. Lots of RP and wonderful players and DMs. I play a drow priestess of Lolth there.  ;D

I currently play a level 60 Night Elf Druid and a level 16 Troll Mage in World of Warcraft (Cenarion Circle and Emerald Dream servers, respectively.) I was on the verge of leaving the game forever until several days ago when a friend dragged me back in.  ;D

Either way, I have a LOT of fun with it! Sure, most of the community (even on the role-playing servers, which are usually bastions of maturity in other games) is made up of kiddies, but it's pretty easy to find your niche if you manage to find some actual adults to talk to.

You too? i shoulda checked this thread sooner! I;m a long time CoH'er (from the beta on), with only a mild lapse for WoW for awhile. Fun games, and defiantely addicting. I know the last part because in a bit I'm going to be trying to convince my wife to let me advance against spending money to get CoV sooner.

ZK

Trust me. You will enjoy CoV. It has a whole lot more. Especially the new classes. Funny though, CoV was well balanced at it's beta test then CoH was at launch.

They learned from their mistakes.  Is it true that you can have your own lair with henchmen?

ZK

Yes. Since the DnD has been lifted. One class is devoted to "Henchmen" which you can have either Ninja, Mercenary, Robots or legions at the undead to your disposal. And of course you still get your own attacks, those which uses guns or such has their own gun model. You can upgrade your Henchmen too like a power set. Other then that, it's awesome. The new features in CoV is added with CoH if you own both. And PvP is definate. If you own both that is.

It does seem better for the most part. Stalkers need some work to be useful after the assassin's strike, but I'm enjoying the beta. I took the plunge and prepaid on CoV today. I am hoping for another Mastermind set, and maybe a few more in genreal in the near future, but I'll take it.

I'm curious about your opinions on the new Star Trek MMORPG.

It seems like it's going to be Ship-based, rather then like the Star Wars which is more traditional. They seem to be going in a new direction with it.
Ons and Offs, yo: https://elliquiy.com/forums/index.php?topic=4370.0

Too tired to post Wednesday night. Posts on Thursday!

TonyWoods

I've always wanted a ship-based RPG game - sort of like Voyager except not lame...

*dons flame retardant suit and apologises to all the Star Trek lovers out there*

You know - lost in a unknown sector of space, your ship damaged and near crippled, having to find components to repair it - jury rigging up alien technology, finding new crew members etc. The ability to unite the alien races of the area in a new peaceful alliance, or burn pillage and conquer their worlds (guess which one I'd choose!).

*Sigh*

I can dream right?

*Goes off to learn more about the Star Trek MMO*

I love MMORPG, I started out playing *hangs head in shame* Sims Online, then after about a month I got really bored them moved to Star Wars Galaxies. I played there for about a year and a half then they did a major combat change and it went down hill for me there. Since then I have played EQ2, WoW, CoH and a few free MMORPG’s. The only thing I can honestly say that I dislike about them is all of the kiddies, I wish they would make an over 18 MMORPG for us older gamers.

Here, here!  I totally agree with that, though age doesn't necessarily mean a complete lack of stupidity and immaturity.

Guild Wars is worth the money...and no monthly fees.  I don't like MMORPGS, but I like this one because the system is designed in a way that you can't just go out and level up by killing monsters (especially at higher levels).  You have to do the missions and it's designed to be more cooperative.  On the other hand, they also have arena battles for PVP if that's your flavor.  Beautiful graphics, frequent updates to fix bugs and an interesting storyline all make this one a winner for me.
