Essential Information

  • Dotley is running this story and Cloudcraft is the co-admin, but all writers are encouraged to foster their personal creativity and enjoyment of the story. This is a collaborative story so we must collaborate with each other. Speak up when you have worldbuilding questions or ideas and always feel free to contribute to the plot. Just talk with the group about it first. If it doesn't conflict with something that's already been established, is sensible, and doesn't interfere with a future reveal it'll probably be welcomed and adopted into the story. But be respectful if Dot and Cloud issue a final word on a matter.
  • Science Fantasy, psychological, mecha, and horror are the primary genres. Is spiced heavily with military and the apocalypse. There will be generous slice of life servings when the characters aren't fighting demons. Romance, tragedy, and even humor will pop up. As far as the tone and themes of the story are concerned - if you’ve seen and enjoyed Neon Genesis Evangelion, Pacific Rim, or Twin Peaks you’ll probably be into what this game is offering.
  • No dice and no system. This is structured freeform. Writers will have control over their characters fates and how they’d like to develop them, but the plot will be loosely structured. Each thread will be an episode and that episode will be made up of various scenes. While I’ll be guiding us through each episode all writers will contribute their suggestions, ideas, or desires for how they’d like their characters to feature in the episode and what sort of scenes they’d like to write them in. Writers in this story will need to show initiative and maintain OOC communication with the group. This is collaborate writing so writers must be comfortable collaborating with others.
  • Lieges, Ladies, and Lords are all welcome. Writers will be allowed to write characters with any sex, gender identity or expression, and sexual orientation they wish. The writer’s characters might not reflect the writer’s real life sex, gender, or sexual orientation.
  • LGBTQ Friendly. Characters who are gay, lesbian, bi, pan, queer, asexual, etc are all welcome. As are trans* characters. So far we have multiple characters who identify somewhere along the LGBTQ spectrum.
  • The writing style is third person and past tense.
  • The required activity level will most likely be one post per week.
  • Multiple characters are allowed and encouraged! Due to the episode and scene formatting of the story it isn't always possible for every single character to participate in every scene. Playing multiple characters allows writers the chance to be involved in more scenes.
  • Consensual romance and sex is allowed to occur between characters, but it’s optional. Flirting and sex can be a great way to express or deepen character relationships, but sexual encounters are not the focal point of the story. If a writer doesn't want their character to pursue any intimate relationships or they opt to “fade to black” before a romantic or sexual scene their character is involved in becomes explicit than their decision will be respected.
  • For right now the story is being hosted in Light: Small Human Groups, though it may change in the future. Due to mature themes it will never be moved into the Non-Adult forums. While sexual content will never warrant the story being moved into Extreme, there's the possibility that plot content (the war, the horror that is the demons, etc) might warrant a move later on. There's also the chance that characters might engage in some BDSM that would warrant a move into Bondage: Small Human Groups. If it looks like we need to move we'll have a discussion about it in the OOC before anything is done.

Premise

In 2050 a meteorite crashed into the Pacific Ocean and caused devastating tsunami along the Pacific rim. But the deaths and damage from that natural disaster paled in comparison to what happened months after the impact. Monstrous entities emerged from the global ocean and attacked. Some were no bigger than a dog or a bus, but some were as long as trains. They swarmed villages, towns, and cities and seemed to ruin without reason or purpose. There was no way to negotiate with the beasts. Military forces around the world fought back against the tides of these mysterious invaders, but their numbers never seemed to diminish. These spawn continually rose up from the depths of the ocean. Yet large pockets of humanity and their nations managed to survive against the spawn's relentless onslaught.

Until something much bigger appeared.

Something emerged from the ocean, same as all the other monsters, though it was far more horrific and dangerous. It was vaguely humanoid in appearance and stood over 80 meters tall. It possessed destructive capabilities so severe and unlike anything humans had ever seen that its weapons and defenses were attributed to magic. More followed in the wake of the first one. Humans named them demons and learned to fear them well. The demons were nothing like there spawn. The appearance of the demons made weather patterns go haywire, generated strange anomalies around the world, and humanity's greatest weapons of destruction couldn't even touch them due to a strange shielding capability. And most terrifying of all was the intellectual capacity the demons demonstrated. Unlike the spawn they could learn and utilize tactics in combat. The apocalypse had arrived.

But humanity made the decision not to go down without a fight. The nations of the world pooled their resources together and united their greatest minds to make humanity’s most complicated and deadly achievement of technology: the Grigori Units. Large humanoid constructions made of mechanic and organic components. Humanity’s bravest co-piloted these inventions in a last bid effort to defeat demons. And they succeeded. While conventional human weaponry left nary a scratch on the demons the Grigori possessed the ability to break through the demon's unique shielding and deliver killing blows.

For 44 years humanity has used the Grigori Units to battle demons and their unending spawn. While the nations of the world have not united into one massive collective, they have fractured into cooperative unions based on continental location. And they have managed to come together as ADAMS: the Allied Defense Against Malignant Spirits. This organization, globally funded and supported by all the unions of earth, leads humanity’s war against the demonic invasion. ADAMS might not to be able to cancel the apocalypse, but they’ve gotten good at getting it renewed for another season.

This roleplay will follow the professional and personal lives of the Grigori pilots and employees of ADAMS as they wage war against the demons.

Story Information

ADAMS
ADAMS

The Allied Defense Against Malignant Spirits. ADAMS is an international military and scientific organization that was established after the awakening of the first demon. It is funded and supported by all the continental unions of the earth. ADAMS leads the war against demons, controls the Grigori Program, and has ownership of the supercomputer system known as Metatron. In the event of a demon attack ADAMS authority usurps any other local, national, and continental authority. ADAMS is one of the top employers of the world, employing thousands of people, and they are one of the few employers to give their employees consistent wages along with health and education benefits.

ADAMS Headquarters is located on the western side of Watcher's Island, previously known as Vancouver Island. The nation of Canada officially donated control of the whole island and its immediate air and naval space to ADAMS use. While ADAMS has significantly built and reconstructed the island, primarily for transportation ease, they have also left many of the island's temperate rainforests untouched. While ADAMS HQ sprawls above ground the most important facilities are located below ground. Command Central, the Grigori Units, the barracks for Grigori trainees and pilots, and the majority of Research and Development's labs are all below ground. ADAMS has numerous other branches scattered throughout the world, though these branches don't possess Grigori Units.

In order to efficiently and independently operate ADAMS is made up of numerous departments, each with their own divisions. Each department is led by a Director and each division is led by a Head or Commander.

The Board of Representatives: Is made up of two representatives from each continental union. The elusive board oversees ADAMS operations and makes essential decisions when Metatron concludes that the active Tactical Commander, Administration Director, or the Departmental Council doesn’t possess the authority or insight to make them. The identity and location of representatives is kept a secret until their retirement. The presence of the board is primarily for plot purposes and to give OOC group decisions an IC justification.

Administration: This department is tasked with the general organizing, coordinating, and control of ADAMS. It handles budget allocation, information technology, and human resource management. It assumes responsibility for the Grigori pilots and oversees their recruitment and training. Administration is also charged with the maintenance of Metatron. During a demon attack this department also assumes tactical control and has supreme authority over decisions made by ADAMS unless Metatron calls for a vote among the Departmental Council or the Board of Representatives.

  • Tactical and Technical Operations: Acts as mission control during missions. While this division is led by a Tactical Commander the authority and responsibility of the position rotates. There are a handful of Tactical Commanders and they work in shifts. Only one Tactical Commander is ever on active duty at a time and while on the clock they assume control the division and lead the missions the Grigori Units are involved in. Communication Specialists, Strategic Analysts, and Grigori Support Technicians work here to ensure everything runs smoothly. (If you're familiar with the mecha genre this division is basically full of bridge bunnies).
  • The Grigori Program: Led by a Head.
  • Information Technology: Led by a Head.
  • Human Resources: Led by a Head.
  • Financial: Led by a Head.

Research and Development: The pride of ADAMS and the primary reason for the organization even existing. This department leads research on demon spawn and the demons. They create the Grigori with Metatron’s assistance and are also tasked with their maintenance, repairs, and upgrades.

  • Research: Led by a Head.
  • Engineering: Led by a Head.
  • Programming: Led by a Head.

Medical Science and Healthcare: This department is tasked with traditional and emergency medical assistance and preventive healthcare for all ADAMS personnel. They also perform their own research and development into medicine and disease.

Public Relations: They handle legal issues and media coverage of ADAMS. They organize publicity/charity/fundraising events, press releases, newsletters, and social media.

Defense Forces: The military of ADAMS. Includes an army, navy, air force, and special operations. In the event of a demon attack these forces act as first response. They keep a demon's attention occupied until a Grigori unit arrives. Soldiers in the ADAMS Defense Force are usually honorably transferred into it from their Union's Defense Forces.

Relief Guard: They provide protection, emergency aid, and resources to civilian populations until a Union's government and their Union Defense Force stabilize after a demon or spawn attack.

Metatron
Metatron

A supercomputer developed and created by ADAMS. Metatron is humanity's the most advanced and intelligent computer. It was created prior to the birth of the Grigori and was an instrumental tool in constructing the Grigori. While Metatron still helps with the maintenance, setup, launch, and tracking of the Grigori it fulfills a variety of other functions as well. It assists the ADAMS Board of Representatives in their deliberations, oversees the security systems of ADAMS, stores and compiles essential data, and works closely with Administration and Research and Development on many projects. In general Metatron is consulted to determine the best courses of action when ADAMS encounters time sensitive problems.

During combat missions Metatron helps track and analyze the pilot’s synchronization and fidelity ratings. It is remotely connected to all the Grigori and helps with communication between the Grigori pilots and ADAMS. It can calm pilots in emergency situations as Metatron often retains contact with the Grigori even if visual and audio contact with pilots is otherwise lost due to unit damage.

The Grigori Units & Their Pilots
Overview of the Grigori

"They're not computers. I understand machines. They're something else."

The prototype Grigori were little more than glorified suicide bombs. They packed enough of a punch to rip through a demon’s TT field to strike, but they had no defensive TT fields of their own. In the long run this method of fighting wasn’t effective so humanity began to experiment. The Research and Development department at ADAMS managed to figure out how to create Grigori Units with a TT fields of their own. What most people, even the pilots, fail to realize is that the Grigori are more alive than they could ever imagine them to be.

While all Grigori Units are capable of traversing water there are currently no Grigori Units that are capable of flight.

The Grigori Units

Unit 00-Azazel: Inactive. Its temperament has been classified as disagreeable. Azazel was designed for close quarters combat and the ability to dish out sheer destructive force. Its color scheme is red and black. The TT shield it deploys is primarily red and its TT armaments are fire and heat based. Azazel is the only remaining Grigori prototype unit. It was briefly retired after the successful launches of Unit 01-Samyaza and Unit 02-Penemue, but was later introduced back into combat after being reconstructed with a sleeker design and upgraded with TT capabilities. Azazel has seen the most combat out of all units and has the highest spawn killcount and participation in combat missions against demons. Four years ago Azazel was involved in a failed combat mission against the demon Beliel that ended in the deaths of its pilots, Marie Andre and Ignatius Bennett. Much to the confusion of the Research and Development department, Metatron has locked down the plug entry due to safety and security concerns. Azazel has been repaired, but until Research and Development and Administration can get Metatron to unlock the entry plug the unit is inoperable.

Unit 01-Samyaza: Active. Its temperament has been classified as agreeable. All pilots that meet minimum synchronization and fidelity requirements are given piloting clearance. Samyaza is a slim, streamlined unit, designed for precision maneuvers and advanced mobility. Besides its golden and white color scheme and some internal differences it is Unit 02-Penemue’s twin. Its TT field is various shades of yellow. Unit 01 excels in eroding the TT fields of demons. Many personnel in the Research and Development department affectionately refer to Samyaza as Sammy.

Unit 02-Penemue: Active. Its temperament has been classified as disagreeable. Penemue is a slim, streamlined unit, designed for precision maneuvers and advanced mobility. Its color scheme is primarily silver and white. While it is Unit 01’s twin Unit 02 is capable of moving faster. Pilots synchronizing with Penemue for the first time will notice that the process feels tense, almost hostile compared to Samyaza or Sariel. For some seemingly loose criteria, Penemue refuses to synchronize with some pilots. The combat specifications that it judges most harshly are TT Armaments and Navigation. The pilot in charge of the other specifications does not need the same criteria, provided that they sync well with their co-pilot. Once fully operational, successful pilots report that moving in Penemue feels like gliding on air. Many personnel in the Research and Development department affectionately refer to Unit 02 as Penny.

Unit 03-Sariel: Active. Its temperament has been classified as agreeable. Pilots rarely experience trouble synchronizing with Sariel and they generally find the process to be relaxing. This unit has a weak TT field and cannot protect itself from a direct TT attack from demons. It can break through demon's TT fields, but it takes a while. Research and Development are unsure why Saiel's TT capabilities are so weak compared to Samyaza and Penemue. Numerous attempts at enhancing Sariel's TT output have been unsuccessful as Metatron has concluded that Sariel is functioning as intended. Sariel does have a unique feature in that any of its repairs can be completed in half the time it takes to repair the other units.

Unit 04: Inactive. This unit is currently being created by the Research and Development department.

The Pilots of the Grigori Program

Grigori pilots come from around the world and from a variety of backgrounds. Pilots are never found ineligible due to sex, gender, race, ethnicity, Union citizenship, or sexual orientation. But eligibility is restricted on age. Pilots will never be accepted or drafted if they are under 15 or over 40. Becoming a pilot is the result of either luck or initiative.

The first step to becoming a pilot is having one's synchronization rating tested. In some stable regions around the world it is possible to apply to have one's synchronization rating tested, but ADAMS also routinely orders synchronization rating tests for research and recruitment purposes. Sometimes this will entail ADAMS merely accepting volunteers, though sometimes it's the result of ADAMS ordering a synchronization rating test of everyone within a specific area. Anyone tested and found a natural synchronization rating test over 15% is automatically drafted into the Grigori Program. Those with a natural synchronization above 5% are eligible to pursue acceptance into the Grigori Program.

The Grigori Units are always co-piloted. The strain and complication of operating a Grigori in combat is too much for one person to handle. There are five essential facets of operation to a Grigori Unit: TT Field Armaments, Conventional Armaments, Movement, Navigation, and Communication. While operating a Grigori the pilots will divvy up these responsibilities between the two of them. All pilots are trained in these responsibilities, but some pilots are more skilled in certain areas.

TT Field and TT Armaments: the shielding and weaponry of the Grigori unit. These offense and defense capabilities are what make it possible for the Grigori unit to harm and kill demons.

Conventional Armaments: Standard weaponry. Bullets, bombs, etc. Grigori units tend to use their conventional armaments to kill demon spawn. Conventional Armaments will not harm demons due to the demon's TT field, but they can be used in strategic ways during combat.

Movement: The ability and ease for the pilot to control the movement of the Grigori unit.

Navigation: Essential to efficient movement. Navigation is the ability for the pilot to comprehend and understand what is occurring on the battle field, especially the direction and positioning of everything, so the Unit Grigori can be moved safely and efficiently.

Communication: A pilot in charge of communication within a Grigori unit maintains verbal contact with their tactical commander, mission control, and other pilots.

Synchronization & Fidelity Ratings

Not just anyone can hop into a Grigori and pilot it. While intensive training is required to understand how to operate it the most important requirement is the pilot’s individual synchronization rating with a unit. A Grigori unit must have a 50% synchronization or fidelity rating with its pilots in order to be operable.

Every single human on earth has a unique natural synchronization with the Grigori. The average synchronization rating for an untrained person is 3%. The lowest is 1% and the highest is 20%. A high natural synchronization doesn’t always imply a better pilot or limit someone with a low natural synchronization. 20% is a hurdle that all potential pilots must jump, but once jumped pilots are able to train their synchronization rate higher. Those with high natural synchronizations just get to attempt that jump sooner.

A pilot’s individual synchronization is important because when combined with another pilot’s synchronization is becomes their fidelity rating. If Pilot A has a synchronization rating of 35% and Pilot B has a synchronization rating of 25% than their fidelity rating usually comes out as 60%.

Synchronization and fidelity ratings fluctuate. When in combat they tend to rise. Pilots can undergo training to increase synchronization and fidelity, but the effectiveness of this varies. Physical status has no bearing on a pilot’s synchronization rating. It will not lower because of illness or natural bodily occurrences like menstruation. But there is some proof that a pilot’s mental or emotional status affects their synchronization rating.

There are numerous physical and interpersonal activities that can increase a pilot’s fidelity rating with other pilots: group yoga, dancing, playing games like chess or go, cooking and sharing meals, taking naps together, solving math problems, repairing broken objects, etc. The list of proven activities to increase fidelity is extensive. The most controversial method for increasing fidelity ratings is sex. Testing and research on this has been inconclusive and ADAMS officially discourages pilots from engaging in sex to try to increase ratings due to moral and legality concerns.

With training and combat experience Grigori pilots typically have a synchronization rating between 30% to 45%. What happens if a pilot if able to achieve a synchronization rating above 50%? That's a delightful horror that we'll be finding out during the course of the story.

Character Application

  • Please PM me your character application. Don't post it in this thread.
  • Check out the accepted character's profiles if you're curious to see who we have. So far we have a diverse grouping of characters in terms of sexual orientation and ethnicity.
  • Remember that this is not "first come, first served". I'll be accepting character applications for a while and deliberating over them. I want to keep this a small group game so I'm ideally looking for around five writers who are willing and excited to play multiple characters. I'll be selecting the characters and writers I feel will mesh well together.
  • Only select one character to send me as your application. You can choose a Grigori trainee/pilot/ace or an ADAMS employee. I'd really like to see members of Administration or Research & Development, but I'll consider soldiers and members of Public Relations. After your first character has been accepted you can begin plotting another (and then another after that, etc)! All writers who are accepted will be allowed to play a Grigori pilot as one of their characters.
  • If you get stuck or confused while filling out the application feel free to PM me and I'll work with you on figuring something out.

My interest was mildly peaked until I saw Twin Peaks being mentioned. Now I am thrilled!  ;D

I admit, free of all shame, that the NGE vibe is entirely intentional  ;)

I have no idea what Sakure Wars is, but if it recalls pleasant memories than I consider that a good thing!

As for everyone else: thanks so much for expressing your interest! I’ll be putting up the character application template sometime within the next 24 hours. In the meantime please don’t hesitate to ask questions or toss out any ideas for characters you might have.

I was thinking of snatching myself a Grigori Ace with too much time to think about what he is doing or a Defence Force jet fighter pilot with too many grudges keeping her up at night. Perhaps even both if I find the time... :P

Lets just hope the most normal function member of the group is not an Imperial Penguin, Here is looking at you Evangenlion.

This roleplay seems great. I like its blend of Evangelion and Pacific Rim. I would probably play a normal civilian who has gotten drafted into the program due to her high synch rating.

Both sound like great ideas for characters  :-)

Ah and this is a good time to let everyone know something important. All writers in the story will have the opportunity to have a pilot character  :-)

Pilots are not bond/assigned to certain co-pilots or Grigori Units. There might be preferences, but nothing is permanent. Unit 02 is the only Grigori that some pilots run into trouble synchronizing with, but overall any pilot will be able to be paired up with another pilot and tossed into a Grigori together. There'll only be three units in the beginning of the story so we'll be sharing  :-)

Thanks! That's the blend I was going for :3

If you want a pilot that will eventually see combat within a Grigori than the normal civilian pilot angle is something I'd discourage. But if you're interested in exploring the training of a pilot within the Grigori Program than disregard the discouragement and instead be encouraged  :-)

The days of snatching up anyone with the highest synchronization possible and putting them in a Grigori were for the prototype Grigori and the first few times Unit 01 and Unit 02 were used. The Grigori have undergone a lot of development and improvement since then. Nowadays pilots are occasionally drafted from the civilian population, but they receive extensive training that can take years before they're put into a Grigori for a mission. I'd prefer any brand new pilots that are drafted or recruited into the Grigori Program that we want to eventually use in combat missions to already be employees of ADAMS. That way they have experience and are familiar with how the organization works so there's a possibility of them being able to see combat.

Being drafted would be her background more or less. She could of possibly been an intern (which made her so easy to find). I'd like to have her starting to be on her last bit of training. I'll still probably make her meek like my usual characters. Being an intern thrown into a training program hasn't actually helped her confidence from when she was still a mousy intern girl.

Ah yes, that's fine then. I'm off for now but I'll be back later.

Hello ebpohmr!  :-) An engineer/technician character, especially one working in the Research and Development Department, would be great. Please don't hesitate to post any questions here or PM me. Looking forward to seeing your character!

Just thought I'd give everyone an update on what's happening  :-)

I've received two character applications and I've been talking privately with two other people who are in the process of making their character applications. So far so good! I've also been working on my own character profiles and should have them up in a day or two if anyone has been waiting to see an example.
