A solitary radio half-buried in the sand flickered to life, a soft and calming tune lazily flowing out. Beside the portable radio, a burnt and charred skeleton rested, face-down on a towel sunbathing under the yellow skies. Further away, the shriveled husk of a leafless palm tree offered shade to another fleshless corpse reclining in a wooden beach chair.

In the distance, the wasted toxic soup of the Pacific cascaded on- waves tumbling over one another as they ebbed and flowed onto the beach. Past the beach, there was a debris-strewn road and boardwalk, vehicles stationary and lifeless, their occupants still skeletonized within. Rather than being obliterated and wrecked apart, everything was dilapidated and abandoned, rusted and degraded. It started to rain softly... The sound of the cascading ocean and pitter of black rain fought with the soothing music until it started to repeat, that melodious women's voice unnaturally caught in a second-long loop until the signal abruptly tuned out.

All that remained was the sound of the waves lazily rolling forth from the sea before they retreated back to the ocean. That and the gentle deluge of acid rain that steamed on contact with the earth.

War. War never changes... In the year 2077, fire rained over earth and humanity was irrevocably changed forever. Those who survived would never again live their lives as they once did, doomed to rule over the world that they destroyed. The end of civilization lasted only two hours. No one knows who shot first, but within moments most of the world was scorched in a hellstorm of radiation. Yet not all was entirely lost. On the island of Oahu, those who survived did so in great underground vaults. As they hid beneath the earth, China, only a stone's throw away, blanketed the island in a deluge of chemical and biological weapons, sparing the tropical paradise the horrors of nuclear holocaust while inflicting upon it a much more insidious fate...

OOC:

I was thinking that we might have a player or two be from a vault, and a player or two from the outside- destined to meet. The Vaults were not meant to protect anyone. Not really... they were science experiments and this being E, I had the idea that one of the vaults in Hawaii was built to conduct a sexual experiment (Like Vault 68 and 69...)

Perhaps the dwellers were pumped full of aphrodisiacs on a daily basis. It was in their food, their water. The vault itself was designed to resemble phallic or yonic imagery and plenty of provocative reading/viewing/listening material was available. The effect this could have had is... perhaps, the citizens becoming immune to the aphrodisiacs pumped into them over a few generations (Though they'd still probably have a culture of sex...) yet they are absolutely saturated with the stuff, themselves becoming walking aphrodisiacs.

So the wildlife of Oahu is not FEV mutants or anything. Perhaps there was an FEV facility, but I think most of the weird mutations of the native plant and animal life came from the cocktail of chemical and biological weaponry used by the Chinese in their counter-attack on the US. They wanted to conquer Hawaii, not destroy it... so they attacked the populace while trying to keep the infrastructure in tact. So, day 1 after the war- everything was sill probably functioning. Automated power plants and the like... if they are nuclear- then they might have continued working for a long, long time. Of course, this is Fallout and without human intervention, something had to go wrong.

So, I hope to have at least one character from both sides of the vault door- and they'll both have very different experiences to share...

I heard joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Life seems harsh, and cruel. Says he feels all alone in threatening world. Doctor says: "Treatment is simple. The great clown - Pagliacci - is in town. Go see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. "But doctor..." he says "I am Pagliacci." Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.

Rorschach's Journal. October 12th, 1985: Dog carcass in alley this morning, tire tread on burst stomach. This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face. The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout "Save us!"... and I'll whisper "no."

A writing sample for you, to show my interest and ability:

The clicking of the geiger counter may not be as strong as on the mainland, but that didn't mean it was entirely safe.  The hiss of respirators were loud in her ears as she climbed through the wreckage of what was once a beautiful building in downtown Honolulu, the sun overhead scorching everything and only tempered by the steady breeze off the ocean.  Crouching down near the window, whose top had crumbled away, the young woman scouted out the area.

She was part of a recon team, sent in to explore what was left and determine if it was safe to rebuild.  Reports said everything should be fine to breathe, but after almost two centuries underground, it was probably for the best they wear masks, in case something lingering in the air that went undetected got through.  It also meant that it was hot as blazes, and she was half tempted to rip the mask off, caution be damned.  But if she did, she'd be reprimanded and sent to work in the engineering tunnels again.  If there was one thing that would stop her, it was that.

The woman in question was named Jocelyn Hubbard, a 17 year old from Vault 96, and one of the people assigned to make a determination whether it would be safe to return to the surface or stay below.  So far, things were quiet, and she tapped her radio, "Recon Four to Recon Lead, I'm in position.  No sign of activity.  Over."

The radio crackled a bit, some slight interference coming in, "Copy that, Recon Four.  Standby."

Jocelyn was content to enjoy the shade when some movement caught her eye.  It was one of the blue jumpsuits from their vault, running as fast as they could.  Then she saw it.  A creature... maybe six legs, with huge mandibles, lept after the person and impaled a long proboscis into their back.  She stared in horror as the person, still alive, screamed and thrashed as the creature then jabbed the proboscis into their head.  They stopped moving, and the creature... the creature began sucking out the brain matter.  After doing this, it dumped the now dead body on the ground, where it began to use its claws to shred the body and slurp up any blood and juices.

Hands shaking, Jocelyn called in, "r-Recon f-f-four to Recon Lead... I... I just saw a giant... bug thing... hunt down one of our team and kill them!"

Only static greeted her as she tried again, "Recon Lead?  Recon Lead!"

Just then, the sound of something thudding on the ground drew her attention.  She slowly turned around, and one of the creatures stared at her.  She whimpered, and it loomed up.  The last thing she saw was the sharp tip before it impaled her forehead and killed her instantly.

Heh heh. Nasty, brutish, short. I love it. :D

God, my time in Hawaii taught me that if anything- giant centipedes were just as terrifying as any post-apocalyptic mutant. ::) In any event, I updated the first post with some less obtuse in-universe information. :P

What character do you have in mind to play, what would you like to see/have your character do? This is a question for everyone interested, by the way.

Violet Wise
Age: 24 years old
Vault 96 resident
Primary Occupation: Vault Med-Tech
Secondary Occupation: Educator

Primary Purpose of Vault 96: Conduct research into into heightened sexual stimulation on residents with controlled dosage of chemicals known to heighten arousal and desire.  Subjects provided contraceptives to control birthrate and all applicants screened thoroughly for STDs prior to entry.  All areas of the vault except those mandating special hazard equipment are designated clothing optional.

Biography: Violet Wise was born in 2253, one year after the first scouting expedition went out.  When they never returned, it was assumed the expedition encountered dangers too great for the Vault's occupants and the door remained shut.  After 25 years and two Overseers, it was felt it was time to send out a new expedition, this one consisting of the minimal number of people to avoid unnecessary risks.  Among those who volunteered was Violet Wise, who felt a medically trained person would be essential.  After going through training to ensure she was comfortable using the 10mm standard issue firearm and security baton, she and the others left the Vault to dangers unknown.

      Huh. Interesting.

Pacific sounds like great makins for aquatic humanoid exxperimentation zones.

(that fancy waya sayin mermaid vault)

Might have more to say when I remember where I know IL from...

I must say it is good for the ego when my reputation precedes me. ;D

By reputation you mean wet dog smell? The saying is "shower with a friend, save water" not "shower with man's best friend, save water."

      Sheesh.

Will stare at more images, sleep on it, resume plotting against you all in the morning.

I want to be a member of a tribe like the great khans.  Kamehameha is the only person I can think of. but I would be a fire dancer that uses a  Shishkebab

Ouch, Roxy. :P I do think that last one would be quite appropriate for the setting, personally...

Zenpai; Pele is the Hawaiian goddess of fire, and there are references to her in quite a few places on the islands. Quite a few geological terms are named after her as well, but I digress...

GloomCookie

I can't tell if Roxy likes you or not :P

And Zenpai, I'd suggest doing some serious reading on the Hawaiian cultures before just jumping in.  Reason is, while the cultures will blend and mix over time, without a firm grasp of it, I doubt there's going to be much beyond "Hawaiian Goddess A that vaguely fits and Hawaiian God B that isn't a good match at all are our gods who command <something unrelated to either deities' areas> so you're all gonna die now kthxbai"

Yeah, I lived in Hawaii for about three years when New Vegas came out- so I couldn't help but imagine what the paradisaical tropical island would look like in the Fallout universe. I felt that the islands' proximity to the great antagonist of the backstory, China, would change things up somehow. Hence, the island was mostly un-nuked, but thoroughly fucked up by other means.  ::)

Inerrant Lust

Hmmm... how about, as a general rule- as smutty as Fallout is over-the-top violent.

Also, your character wouldn't need to come from a research center in order to be weirdly mutated- having color changing skin or some other odd attributes. There probably aren't many supermutants or other products of FEV, but a lot of people might have become something akin to troglodytes or swampfolk. I'm being intentionally vague at the moment of what exactly the Chinese released over the island, but it's created some wonky things... Perhaps there was some counterpart to FEV being developed in the PRC...

So yeah, having a small superficial mutation is not impossible...nor is it impossible for someone to turn into a resident evil-esque flesh monster either...

Well... that gives me some sinister ideas. Yes, yes, a lot of the nasties will take some inspiration from Resident Evil, methinks...

Of course, I intend to cater to everyone's O/Os. Monster sex isn't necessarily a given..

Gonna pass. Don't think it's gonna hold my interest. Everything I've got is heavy-serious.

      Good luck with it, y'all.

I'm an old school Fallout fan (I played it on release, because I remember Wasteland too...well, vaguely, lol), and I have to say I'm intrigued by your idea, Inerrant Lust. The outline for the vault, and it's tenants, is right up my alley. Are you still taking applicants for that?

Playing off what Linna has posted, I think a young (mid 20s) female scientist from the vault might be fitting? Or, if we wanted someone from the vault a little more combat oriented I'd be happy to play an even younger security officer sent along as part of the escort?

Hey that might be a great idea. Have everyone involved be part of a Vault expedition, perhaps heads of their respective divisions.  I could head up Security, Anathanasia could head up Science, and maybe zenpai could head up Anthropology. And then everyone else could focus on playing someone under those departments.

My thinking here is that if we make everyone from the Vault, we have a common background, everyone knows each other, and it allows us to stick together as a group. Places we explore would be done as a group and we can meet NPCs who tell us about the area, trade, or try and kill us, whichever is more interesting.

Plus, you could always give us an important mission, like finding some new plants to grow and harvest because a disease wiped out everything but the synthetic crap, so until they come back, the rations are thin.  This would require us to interact with the locals to find the best plants and what they do for food.  That's just my thinking on things, and of course IL could go another direction with it.

Well, I wanted at least one character on the inside, so to speak- and another on the outside.

Of course, I'll bring the two groups together... but yes, you have it right that the vault dwellers will be assigned some kind of special mission a la Fallout 1.

Anathanasia

To be blunt, I just want a vault character because the whole "walking aphrodisiac" thing you mentioned in there screams 'rape me!' to my ears. I'm into that. ;)

Character wise, I had been thinking about a botanist myself, if I were to go the scientist route. It seemed to me to be a solid for this setting. My only hesitation comes from not knowing a damn thing about botany...I'll think on it, but if I don't do that, then perhaps a biologist, or even more of a support role, like an engineer. It could be really handy to have someone mechanically (and electrically) inclined on the team, in case we run into salvageable tech. I can fake that more comfortably than botany, lol.

Name: Jake....
Race: Ghoul (Ethnicity is un known.)
Age: ???

Personality:

Skill's/Trade: He mainly operates as a scavenger. With a good and perceptive head on his shoulder's Jake has always been able to sense danger and tell other peoples intentions. In a way his greatest skill is the Luck and willingness to survive. In a group, if he was ever convinced to be in one. He would act as the rough and tumble rogue, a scout that look's ahead for danger, trap's, and other things of lethal note.
(Survivalist, perceptive scout, has a lot of luck. Good at speech and Descent in barter, trade.)
Tag: Speech, Survival, Science. Has a natural affinity towards barter but is not the best.
Special: S:4 P:7 E:5 C:6 I:6 A:5 L:7

History: ..........? Jake doesn't really know his past. Before he became a Ghoul. It was strange, the only thing he kept is collective knowledge he is unsure of how he obtained. Science... Was he a scientist? And to this day his memory of it is so fogged he is not even sure his name is even Jake... Was it a nick name? The name of a friend? He did not know any of the answers. Nor was he truly determined to find out. His past is more of a morbid curiosity he try's to keep hidden. Focusing more on the now, on survival. Jake, a ghoul whom has survived many many years. Is a great survivalist, who knows the way of the land in Oahu. Does he know everything? Of coarse not. But enough to survive? Bet your ass. His perceptive ability to sense danger and his good detection skill's has been the sole reason he has survived.  Besides his unfathomable luck. I mean after all, he has that pretty face of his as proof he is lucky.

Equipment: A brown coat. white shirt, grey jeans. Sun glasses for when the day get's bright. A spool of Wire. Lighter. Small med kit (Odd's and ends. Nothing major.) Needle, thread. A sharpened butcher knife. 9, 5.56 mm rounds. 3, 38. rounds.  (Note: Starts low on ammo.) 3 bobby pin's. toilet paper. A small pouch of hay. And a skillet.

Guns:
Mosin Negant-2070 model: Capacity is 7 shots for a magazine: Takes 5.56: Attached hunting scope.

38 smith and wesson Special: 6 shot cylander: Takes 38.rounds.
Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

Anathanasia: Fellow fan of the original pc games? Yay! lol. They were just as good as the more action focused fps' games.! ^^

I got interested with Fallout 3 and still love to play New Vegas.  I love what they did with New Vegas, even if they kept the same graphics engine.  I'd love to see them take the modded Skyrim engine and put it to work with lovely Fallout goodness.  And if they kept half the fun stuff from New Vegas, that would be just... sploosh.  Hehe.

I mean I'm just terrible with plants. IRL, I think I could probably kill a plastic plant without too much trouble...lol. I'm leaning towards the enigneer idea now, just because the more I think about it the more it seems to me that could be more interesting outside of the smutty parts of the game. I mean, don't we want someone who can cobble together some of those hilarious makeshit weapons and repair shit? ;)

I prefer the original Fallouts over 3, but New Vegas caught the tone (given it was a lot of the devs from 1 and 2, that's not so big a surprise) much better. Fallout 3 was just plain depressing a lot of the time, not quite capturing the dark satire of the originals. Still, good game on it's own.

Linna, if you like New Vegas, are you familiar with the Sexout series of mods? Check out LoversLab (google that), if you want a crazy adult version of New Vegas.

Well, you see, with New Vegas, I love it. Though, I do think fallout 3 ruined a few long standing traditions. :( Example.

Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide
Harold: They just jumped his transformation to a tree, rather then keeping his slow progression through the games. And the plot in the mission completely ruins any other visit's into his character.

Dog Meat: I mean, Rex is cool. He is after all a cyber dog. But... I miss my loyal hound. :(

Fall out 3 though was a good game. But New vegas was still better. My main grief with three at first was being a vault dweller again. But after playing 3 again, I discovered it was worth exploring since we went into great depth with it, and a good story line. I still dont fully understand what vault 101's purpose was as a social experiment. Tyranny?

Juggtacular

Instead of playing a vaulter(would have been a security specialist or something along those lines if I did), I had the idea of a Ranger-esque character who's been surviving on his own for quite some time.
