The castle was well fortified. It always had been, staffed with a small army which went on patrols to the north and kept the road safe for travelers.  Averly was the first major fortification along the border, a bastion of civilization to stand against the barbarian tribes that occasionally raided farmsteads and waylaid travelers, but this was excessive.

She could hear the sound of armorsmiths working even now in the dead of night.  Men slept out in the courtyard, the barracks apparently full to bursting with the mercenaries that had been hired on the vague pretense of 'keeping the peace'.  Why would he need this many men?  How long did he plan to pay them, how had he gathered them so quickly?  Most companies had at least passing acquaintance with the Nezerra, she'd have heard something if a large force was being gathered.  Wouldn't she? But someone had clearly put in a good deal of effort to make sure that rumors did not spread.  It was annoying but Althea had to admit that part of her was almost impressed by the amount of planning that had gone into this venture.

The maladroit guard at the end of the hall saved her.

Althea had been so focused on the task at hand, the gentle click of the tumblers in the lock as her fingers slowly twirled the delicate picks she'd pulled from the small folded leather case at her side, that she had not been paying proper attention to the other sounds around her.  She did not register the scuff of boots across stone, the rustle of papers being shifted, she heard nothing but the slow click click click of metal against metal her ear pressed up against the banded wood portal, that is until the all too friendly sentry called out his greeting.

"Greetings m'lord!"

He was young yet, she'd noticed that coming in, the breadth of his shoulders had not yet caught up to the length of his legs and he swayed slightly as he stood at the end of the corridor, at times he even hummed softly under his breath.  Was he dancing?  It was almost endearing and had made her job of slipping past him almost comically easy.  No doubt their sharper scouts stood watch on the walls.  Who would make their way unchecked this far into the fortress?  Looking out over an empty hallway had to be terribly boring so she could not blame him overmuch for his inattention.

Still she got the feeling that someone would blame him for tonight's doings and she winced at that thought even as she hurriedly slid the last tumbler into place and twisted the handle slipping inside the darkened Lords chamber and closing it once more again quickly behind her.  Relocking it was faster, now that she understood the inner workings of the intricate mechanism, but as she finished she could hear the muffled sound of what could only be a reprimand coming from down the hall.

Seconds later she heard a snick as a key turned in the lock and she let out a slow breath, having barely concealed herself in the shadowed corner next to a large armoire.  Silently she cursed herself and tried to review the layout of the room from the quick survey she had managed before diving into this makeshift hiding spot.

It could be worse, she reminded herself. It could be so much worse, but the situation was hardly ideal.

The maladroit ant could only wave his feelers at the giant leaf in front of him. Oh, if only he were a bee, he could fly over it. If he were a caterpillar, he could eat through it. Alas, all he could do was turn around and head home.

He was confident that the initial goal had to make the bedroom into a place of decadent sensuality, but as he regarded the mirrored ceiling, the sequin and satin cushioned walls and the fur blanket on the bed, he knew no amount of sensuality could overcome the kitsch fashion sense his fiancee seemed to have acquired.

She collected kitschy cat salt and pepper shakers. There was a tabby with a fiddle, a black one smoking a cigar, a white kitten playing with yarn, and of course the famous twin spotted ones stuck in a sweater. All of them looked like they would break with one use, and yet they were all in mint condition.

The Queen should defer to the King when it comes to something as important as a state execution. Her propensity to take matters into her own hands does not bode well for the kingdom.

His aegis was fringed with the finger bones of his enemies. They were coated with poison before battles, rendering all who dared to graze him with paralysis. He picked up his sword and ran into the arena, flinging his aegis straight at the colossal giant hydra.

It's the newfangled way of wrestling; I miss the old days when wrestlers were just so much cleaner. You know, not how it's nasty today. Back then, they hit each other with steel chairs, kicked their face in, threw them off the top of a steel cage, stole each other's girlfriends!

Not like the aegis of today!

Her response to her father's question of whether she drank the alcohol in the cupboard was succinct. "As much as you did."

He eyed the concoction that was placed before him on the table. They had called it ‘coffee’, a strange name for a dark swirling liquid. Even the light from above hadn’t helped brighten it up. Then there was the smell. He had to admit, it was intoxicating. “Drink up; it’s the only thing you’ll get in here”. His molten eyes snapped up to look at the man who spoke then, a succinct threat laced in his wording and he stiffened there. Pulling his hands up from under the table, he held it up for the other, as if to remind him of the fact that he was still chained. The man only shrugged there, clearly he had a smart one on his hands, and he wouldn’t be easy to fool. He glanced once at his aegis, his eyes washing over the gleaming surface that was adorned with the words of his House.

With a sigh, the young Fae plucked up the Styrofoam cup containing the coffee and brought it up to his lips. There was a smirk that joined there, a faint triumphant hint to show that the armour would not be enough to deter him from trying an escape plan. He took a gingerly sip of the concoction and immediately regretted it, slapping it harshly back onto the table. He hadn’t cared when it spilled there, the trail of the black liquid washing along the surface until it trickled down the edge and dripped its way onto the floor. What he cared about was the reaction of the guard who instantly sprung to action and lo behold – I strike.
