Hello there E!

So as the thread title implies, I'm looking to start a Persona-based RP, with the assistance of co-GM Cythieus. The game will be largely freeform, though occasionally I will take inspiration from this document here, which is an attempted modification of the Persona game-play style for tabletop. https://www.dropbox.com/s/t02qopw556wlk2m/The%20Velvet%20Book%20(Draft%200.3)_HQ.pdf?dl=0

The target age range for characters will be high-school age (no older than 20 really).

How We Got Here

Life hasn't always been fair to you. Whether it was abusive parents, unsympathetic teachers, the neighborhood bullies, or any number of other factors, you've always gotten a raw deal. You might have even done some time in juvenile hall (whether you deserved to be there or not). Polite society likes to pretend you don't exist, writing you off as another example of "kids these days" or citing you as a statistic. The system has all but written you off. However, some sympathetic or perhaps bored bureaucrat has seen fit to give kids like you one last chance to make good.

That is what brings you to the Sukuinote Reform School in one of Tokyo's less-glamorous neighborhoods. Sukuinote is known as the place where the dead-enders, no-hopers, and last-chancers get sent when the system thinks there just might be something worth redeeming in someone. Or when they need to warehouse someone until they hit legal age and can be remanded to the prison system or the streets. The school does have a record of actually making productive citizens out of some of its' inmates, but there are also dark rumors swirling about teacher abuse, indifference, and even allegations of criminals having some influence in the school.  All you know is that your social worker and/or the courts have dumped you here for one last shot at being an upstanding citizen.

Who You Gonna Call?

Bad as Sukuniote might seem, there is another factor to consider. Where, the reader might ask, do the personas and shadows come in? The answer to that lies with the Japanese government. After the events of Persona 3, 4, Arena, Ultimax, and 5, the Japanese government is well aware of the existence of another world. They do not know if other nations are aware of it yet, but they aim to find a way to monetize and control it for their own purposes. They've decided that private think tanks and for-profit corporations can't be trusted with something like this that is clearly in the government's interest to control. Of course, the public at large is mostly unaware (with incidents like the Shibuya battle with Yaldaboath written off as mass hallucinations), but the government has begun conducting their own experiments on the other world. And where better to test their "absolutely sure-fire" methods of controlling that world than a reform school where people come and go all the time, and where if there are any accidents, the victims are society's rejects?

As a note, while the government does still have contact with and nominal control over Mitsuru Kirijo's Shadow Operatives, the officials involved in this experiment would prefer not to bring them in, or even to make them aware of the experiments, until they are certain they have control of the other world and will not need their services any longer.

Themes

The overarching theme of the game is the search for meaning in one's life. The PCs are those who have been told that there's no reason for their being. That they are outcasts and of no value. Their struggle is to prove to themselves and the world around them that this is a lie. That they do have meaning, even if it's a meaning they define for themselves.

I don't think it needs to be said for me after my comments in the discussion, but damn it i'm down for this game. Been waiting for Persona or anything SMT-related on here all this time. x_x

Besides making Persona's fit with the theme (do we?), how exactly do we handle this from a profile standpoint? Use pre-existing ones? Create new ones? Will heavy detail make up for the fact one can't find a fitting image, or will a pic be required without protest? Everything else I can handle as the relevant information crops up. o:

I'd appreciate it if players could make their personas fit with the theme somehow. I'm willing to work with players if they need help coming up with something. I appreciate originality in creating Personas, and remember, you have the whole of world mythology, pop culture, and psychology to work with when creating a Persona. I also know how hard it can be to find a picture, so I don't require it, but a picture certainly helps. Below is a character sheet, and I'll try to come up with an example character for you all. :)

You've given me pretty much everything I need to work with, so thanks. o: Now to start concepting...

EDIT: This will be WIP until I finalize him

EDIT 2: Alright, here's an attempt at a finish!

Name: Mifunashiro, Yuuki
Age: 19
Height: 5'8
Weight: 149 lbs (slightly underfed)
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Straight
Arcana: The Tower
Weapon: Melee: Iron Pipe (Classification: Batons) / Ranged: Grenades (Classification: Explosive Weapons)

Personality: The Yuuki of the past, once kinda and upstanding, ceases to exist. Now he lives as a jaded, sarcastic form of what he once was. seemingly comfortable in his new life despite this being as far from the truth as one can get. Occasionally speaks crudely and unashamedly, he does make it a point to try and watch his language around softer looking individuals (the keyword here is 'try'). The shine in his eyes seems to have vanished slightly, giving him more of a tired expression, and when combined with the occasional smirk or grin that crosses his features, leaves him looking rather unnerving to others. When isolated, he simply sleeps the time away, listens to music, or reads a book until he passes out, finding little drive to do anything else for the most part. He rarely keeps friends, refusing to trust anyone else with the word and instead refers to them as acquaintances or associates, people he'll help if they need it but won't do much more if they do nothing for him. Each day living makes him wonder just a little bit more how fucked everything would be if he had the power to do what he wanted. For better or worse, interacting with those around him keep him from doing anything too drastic, and even a conversation that doesn't seem like it's going well still goes far enough to keeping Yuuki grounded and sane. Somewhere, buried deep under heaping mounds of hate, annoyance, and tension lies the man he once was, but whether he cares enough to dig him out in the future remains to be seen.

Background: One look at Yuuki presently and you would never be able to realize he came from a much better family in his youth. Born to a mother who works as a teacher and a father who works as a police officer, there was never any sign of trouble or conflict when it came to home arrangements. Yuuki was well cared for, sent for an education, and raised to be an upstanding boy. Of course, sometimes he had difficulty in school, whether it was applying himself to his courses or meeting new people, but nothing that ever seemed to stop him for long. Well into his secondary education, he met a one student named Ryota Kumori and made a long-lasting friendship where the two would help one another where the other lacked. With a bright future and brighter friends surrounding him, one would wonder: Where did it all go wrong?

It all started with the witnessing of a dreadful occurence one time on school grounds involving one female student, four males, and even a teacher. Recording the disgusting display, Yuuki threatened to take it to his father in order to have the teacher and students arrested. His friend agreed that something that devastating should be reported and agreed to take it to the authorities for him, and so the trust was placed. As he attempted to return for help, the offenders had vanished and left the girl in a catatonic state as a result of what happened. He remained by her side, trying to help her come to terms with what happened, up until the police arrived. The relief he felt, however, was swiftly replaced with confusion when the authorities arrived with an arrest warrant for him instead... And leading the group was his very disgusted and disappointed-looking father. He attempted to plead innocent, and stated he even had evidence that showed it wasn't him but several others, but was faced with the response that they received no such evidence and instead received a tip that one man had brutally and sexually assaulted a student from someone who wished to remain anonymous: A man matching his description. Pleading with his father to find his friend and get the truth from him, the man coldly disowned his son as nothing more than a monster trying to save itself and left his fate to the other officers while he returned home to figure out how to break the news to his mother. Before he left, however, he revealed that he would be sent to Sukuinote Reform School in order to try and change him for the better, but that no matter what they did there was no forgiving what he'd done. Since then he has refused to listen to anything else his son would say, believing him to be nothing more than a criminal. At the current point in time, he was 18 years old.

Though it was called Reform School, it truly just felt like nothing more than a fancily-named prison. Students were told that being on their best behavior, paying attention to their courses and not causing any trouble would lessen their terms, but the treatment they recieved would rival or even exceed that of a normal prison, and there were only a few cases of anyone ever being reformed. Those that didn't were said to be discarded, but there were darker rumors as to the possibilities of what happened. In Sukuinote, Yuuki grew increasingly distant and isolated, at first believing he could follow the rules and leave to prove his innocence, but found his will and mind tested each and every day. Within, he met a student named Tetsuo who tried to befriend the male despite his antisocialism. having been incarcerated for roughly four years, he nevertheless remained optimistic about one day leaving the Reform School, whether fairly or by escaping. At first ignoring the man, Yuuki eventually decided to open up to him, revealing that he felt betrayed by his friend and wondered why he didn't help him when he needed it most. Tetsu merely responded that friendship was apart of life, and that going through without friends was no way to live. It was up to him to take the punches, but what he did after would define him as a person, and that maybe Ryota just wasn't the right friend for him. Together, they swore that they would eventually leave Sukuinote and return to society as better people, a promise that would never come to fruition.

A few days later, the guards pulled aside Tetsu, who shouted back to Yuuki that no matter how much the world they were in sucked, the world beyond their walls was much better, and all it took was a strong will to make the best of it. He never heard from the man after this point, however, a guard informing Yuuki that his associate had earned his freedom from Sukuinote but there was no telling how long Yuuki would remain inside. Once more, another person who claimed to be his friend had up and abandoned him, and soon he began to feel like he saw the world for what it really was: An ugly environment that existed solely to make playthings of him and others. Little by little, he eroded from the respectful and upstanding man he once was and begun to acclimate to life in 'prison'. Acts of resistance saw him beaten and branded, occasional scarred, with more time added to his term. Ultimately he began to realize there was going to be no end to it, but that if he was going to fall, he was going to make sure everyone who slighted him, everyone who crossed him, everyone who intended to befriend and use him, would follow him down.

Now at the age of 19, he still fights with every fiber of his being, living if for no other reason than spite. He's managed to make acquaintances (he refuses to even use the word 'friend' anymore) with others in his predicament, and communicates only so far as he needs to in order to keep himself entertained and amused.

Metaverse Outfit:
Complete with mask, minus cages and sword

Persona: Apollyon
Description: Depicting the form of what seems to be a humanoid entity, however all semblance of humanity stops there. His legs seem to be reverse-jointed, almost like that of a locust, with clawed feet appearing more bestial than insect-like. He possesses four arms that end in clawed fingers, limbs that seem to be held in what appears to be a sort-of restraining device that it uses to enhance its strikes. He possesses two pairs of wings of different makes, the forewings appearing draconic while the hindwings are insect-like. The features of his face are hard to make out as the entirety of his face and much of his body is sealed in some manner of leather cloth with only his mouth shown, a maw of razor sharp teeth. The leather masking is augmented by a metal head plate of sorts that surrounds his head, curving out just a tad from his cheeks and aiming forward like spikes, while the top half extends upward to emulate the design of a mangled crown. Like most insects of the grasshopper species, Apollyon too has an abdomen... Of sorts. Rather than a normal one however, Apollyon's abdomen extends into that of a scorpion tail that retracts a bit for easier storage.
Theme: Apollyon is often referred to as The Destroyer, and often shares names with Abaddon. With numerous hardships experienced by Yuuki, Apollyon manifests as his latent desire to lay waste to everything. Not just those who slighted him, not just the system that keeps toying with him for its own amusement, not just the people he's forced to be around that are in the same situation as him, but everything. Apollyon has no trouble indulging in these destructive impulses, but aspires to be much more than a mindless destroyer. He seeks out the meaning of his existence by assisting Yuuki in surviving his. Perhaps together they can look beyond the impending ruin and see what lies for them beyond.

Name: Takeda Kimiko

She insists on being called "Inmate 4859" though.

(Just imagine her with more scars)

Persona: Pilecki

Persona description: As personas are heavy on metaphors, it is not immediately obvious that Takeda Kimiko's persona is the hero who willingly got send to Auschwitz to spy on the camp. Pilecki looks like an underfed man with the head of a white eagle, as Pilecki was posthumously awarded the Medal of the Order of the White Eagle, the highest Polish military honor, that eagle head had many of it's feathers plucked out, as captives in Auschwitz were shaved when they arrived, and were deliberately starved to death, wearing a torn and tattered military uniform and carrying a torn Polish flag on a banner while riding a dying horse, representing the fact that Pilecki was an officer in Poland's cavalry divisions before WW II. Kimiko could point all that out the first time seeing her persona if you ever asked her, though it would seem less impressive if you were to ask her later as anyone could just look up info on the figures their personas represent on the Internet.

Theme: Those who fight against all odds and willingly throw themselves into almost certain death so that others may live. Those who never falter in their perceived duty no matter the personal cost to them.

Arcana: The Hanged Man (The one robbed of her childhood who channels her anger at protecting others)

Age: 19

Height: 1m75

Weight: 77 kg

Hair: red

Eyes: Green

Distinctive sign: Covered in various scars, some burns scars, plenty of cuts including a glasgow grin.

Sexuality: Bi, but no real experience.

Melee weapon: Biker gloves with kevlar padded knuckles.

Ranged weapon: Novelty shurikens shaped like a set of 54 cards.

Profile: Inmate 4859 took the name after being send to a juvenile detention facility where the overall mentality was "toss them in and it will all sort out" after defending a boy she had a crush  on from sexual assault by one of her female classmates. The struggle lead them to slip on the wet floor since it has been raining and the other girl got her neck crushed under Kimiko's weight. Unfortunately, the other girl was the daughter of a judge, and the police more or less forced her int a confession after a lengthy interrogation. She went from a straight A student into a delinquent during that sting, and acquired many scars. During her time, she talked to a serious reporter working fir a tabloid on the horrors of this facility, but it never amounted to anything. She's still as smart and knowledgeable as she always used to, but she figured her shot at a decent life has been ruined and does poorly on tests because she doesn't really bother trying to answer the questions, because what's the point? Her criminal record won't go away. There are plenty of hints that Takeda Kimiko is much smarter and cultured that one would tend to assume, one such hint being her self-given name. While she didn't volunteer for that detention, she still fought from inside and as far as she was concerned was given another show trial after her stint, just like her namesake. Her goal in life is to prevent others from going through what she went through, but she has no idea how to do it beyond spraying murals about the subject when she can get away with it and sending letters to the tabloid journalist who kept her sane during her imprisonment.

Persona Strengths: Physical
Persona weaknesses: Electricity (she is deathly afraid of stun guns)

Okay, so now the big question is: what figure will I use as her persona? Is this sheet okay?

Yes, I meant Affinities with Persona Strengths.

Well, I had the idea of using Witold Pilecki when we tossed around the idea of using freedom fighters and heroes of the people and tossed Robin Hood and Joan of Arc as examples (the guy was a serious freedom fighter who had a lot of guts, and Kimiko knowing about this guy is one of the hints she is more cultured than many people assume). I'd love a figure who was wrongly (or worse, voluntarily) imprisoned and fought from inside their prison to change the world.

Interested, however I d My k ow if I want my character to be a delinquent. D:

I have had an idea for an OC, but they were more fit for the elements and style of Persona 5 in regards to the type of haracter they were and the problems they faced. I'm not sure I want them to be a delinquent or something, but I'll PM the GM for an idea.

Gardsorm

Maybe they don't have to be a delinquent? Someone could have easily set them up for it, thereby sending a more innocent soul to basically suffer among less savory types. It's a thought!

Cythieus

Since I am Co-GMing this thing I was kicking some ideas around. While most of the players we have are going to be people who are kind of learning about all of this (from what it seems), I was thinking that my character might act as a sort of stand in for a Morgana type of character, she's a little more knowledgeable, but doesn't have anywhere near all the answers.

Not sure how Empyrean feels about this idea. I'm working on converting the character over for this thread as we speak.

Cythieus

Name: Tsumi Kusanagi
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Bisexual
Arcana: The Magician
Weapon: Nail Bat

Background:

Personality: Tsumi is a bookish, awkward girl, but she isn't shy. She keeps tabs on the things going on around her, though she's not in control of a major school club or anything she is an information broker of sorts. She knows secrets about almost anyone worth knowing a secret about and her way of interacting with people has been very much based on her extensive knowledge of their lives. To a newcomer she comes off as somewhat innocent due to her looks, though it's unclear if this is an intentional deception.

Much of her knowledge is devoted to learning the secrets of the Metaverse and studying cases of human interaction with it in the past to better understand how it works.

Persona: Lilith -- According to the "Alphabet of Ben Sira", Lilith was Adam’s first wife but the couple fought all the time. They didn’t see eye-to-eye on matters of sex because Adam always wanted to be on top while Lilith also wanted a turn in the dominant sexual position. When they could not agree, Lilith decided to leave Adam. She uttered God’s name and flew into the air, leaving Adam alone in the Garden of Eden.
Persona Affinities: Ice
Persona Weakness: Fire

Yeah, I'm not done with Yuuki's profile yet, but any mention or relevance of the Persona is more from a profile flavor standpoint for him. I don't think he'll actually start the game with it yet unless the GM says we all start with it.

That being said, I love the idea of a Navigator, so I'd be in favor of it, and it definitely sounds like a position best fit for the GM or Co-GM. So far I love Tsumi's FC, has that nerdy beauty going for her. Most uncharacteristic weapon choice though, but one I love nonetheless! xD

I originally went with Studded Gloves for Yuuki, but after realizing that Soveliss' girl Takeda used them, I opted for something more improvisational in the form of a pipe. I'm not 100% sure what sort of weapon to give him, but I enjoy the thought of more... Crude and blunt weapons. If we do get a choice of ranged armaments, however... I'll have to spend some time thinking about that.

Thanks, I'm really excited to play her.

When it comes to ranged I'm tempted to make the whole thing a tribute to Haru and her unconventional and baffling choice of a grenade launcher (I love Haru, if that's not obvious from the avatar).

I had a ranged weapon listed as a long bow, I don't even know why I took that. Maybe I've been watching too much Arrow?

Gardsorm

I don't blame your choice either. Haru is amazing. <3 Shame she only comes late.

So nerdy girl of The Magician... With a nail bat and a potential grenade launcher. Sweet and innocent my ass. xD I'll probably choose a ranged one after everyone else does.

I personally love The Moon. Both have equally good opportunities for character potential, but imo if I didn't take The Tower I probably would have done The Moon because I could work with it easier. The Moon feels like it has a number of ways to go about making unique personalities, but maybe it's just me at almost 10 AM with no sleep yet, haha.

Soveliss: I don't know who Witold Pilecki is. However, Joan of Arc sounds like an awesome Persona though! :)

Cythieus: Nice! We do need a navigator and Tsumi seems like she'd fit the bill. I take it Lilith is not purely a navigation Persona but something like Mitsuru, Teddie, or Morgana in that she fights with a bit of navigation on the side? Or am I mistaken?

Ranged weapons are doable. I have an idea for how you guys can get weapons and armor. Or at least, replica weapons and armor in the real world that become real in the other world. :)

Witold Pilecki was an officer in the Polish cavalry division and he that took part in the Polish resistance during WWII. He intentionally got captured to spy on Auschwitz as an inmate, where he was identified only as 4859. He even managed to build a radio and pass the first reports of the Nazi atrocities to the Allies. Basically he was the first figure I could think off who took part in active resistance from inside a prison, and never stopped fighting for the freedom of the Polish people, ending up executed on false charges by the USSR after he documented their atrocities. When we were tossing around the idea of using a freedom fighters theme for our personas, I figured I could modify a character idea I had for a long time (The straight A student turned delinquent by an unfair stint in juvie who still had enough heart to take someone vulnerable under her protection who could still get A grades if she cared enough) and having her pass along info to a reporter while in juvie that could have resulted in her getting severely punished if she got caught would have fit the theme of freedom fighters, which lead me to think of Witold Pilecki who did most of his resistance work as an inmate from Auschwitz. But if you know more real or mythological figures who were informants from captivity and fit the theme of your campaign better feel free to suggest them.

Besides, as Persona 5 shows, there is precedent for using real people as Personas (Captain William Kidd was a real life 17th century privateer).

Witold sounds like a good Persona, and as you said, there is precedent with Ishikawa Goemon and Captain Kidd. Another figure who fought injustice from captivity (and was also a real person) was Nelson Mandela. From mythology, what immediately comes to mind is Prometheus from Greek mythology. He was imprisoned for the crime of gifting humanity fire (which he stole from the Gods), and is generally well-regarded for it, except among the Gods.
