Personally, I think it sucks that ms has to keep scrambling up the desktop. If you don't use it much, it can be a pain in the ass to find simple things like where to change various settings and so on - more so for someone who is not very technical. As for switching to Linux, I did that a while back and found that the few games that I've played could be run with wine ( keep in mind, I really don't play many games )

There's a wine compatibility list that also gives info on how to finagle games and apps into working under wine.

Likewise, you can also run a guest operating system within Linux using a vm app like vmware, xen, or virtualbox if needed.

If I didn't need to run ms outlook at work, I would be completely off windows. For work, I use linux primarily, then connect to a headless windows box for stuff like outlook and ms office using rdesktop ( linux version of ms terminal service client )
