We Could Be Heroes (Sexy Superhero High School) is Recruiting!

We're looking for a few (3-5) new writers to join us in rebooting a colaborative writing project with a fun, active, imaginative and collaborative collective of writers. This is NOT a First Come, First Served opportunity, and you should expect to go through a process much like you did to be approved for membership in Elliquiy. Why? It's because we've a group of about half a dozen writers who value the quality of the characters in the game and mature, respectful, creative writing. Know that at one point or another we have all gone through this process and we've found that in sharing our character concepts and working out relationships between them before we began to RP was an invaluable stage in launching strong, multifacetted characters who added a lot to everyone's RP. All that being said... Onto sharing the game settings and themes.

The idea of the game is to start as high school students (16-18 years old) or high school teachers. In the vain Sky High, Kick Ass and Chronicle, I'd love to set up a group Year One superhero game with a few twists.

1) all the characters know each other, at least in passing.
- not to be cliched, but think of the type your character would be and what their views of the others might be.
- NO completely socially inept outcasts At ALL. Yes, you can be a nerd and not so social, but you need to bring in a character capable of interacting with others, doesn't have to be a Popular Kid but they have to add to the RP-Fun of everyone. Ie Socially awkward kid with a chip on her shoulder who antagonizes nerds is great, socially awkward kid who sits in the corner scared to talk to anybody, shrinking back from all human contact because they've been bullied, not cool.
- NO killers, no PTSD themed characters and no Psycho/sociopaths
- NO more black belt/top ranked martial artists. Yes, it can be a hobby your character has engaged in but we don't need any more Bruce Lee 2.0s
- Actual connections between characters will have a thread of their own to host this discussion

2) everyone gets their powers during the High School's Ski trip. They are all on the trip together when in the middle of the night  the lodge shakes as Something Weird(tm) happens sending a pulse of odd energy through the area and as well as odd bits of future tech and  mystical objects across the landscape.
- Characters can have any power type but remember to play the 'starting' version of the character. Also, don't forget flaws make a character fun to play with

3) I'd like to share world building, meaning some folks could become villains if that suits their personalities. Likewise, if you have a villain/gang/bad guy concept, share it with the group. I see opening a thread for this info.

To Propose a Character

1) Read all of this message

2) Use the code below to work up your character proposal

CHARACTER SHEET

NAME: (your birth name, coming up with super names can happen in game)

AGE: (16+ no exceptions, yes you could play a super teacher)

SEX: (Male, Female or Other - if you were transformed by something)

APPEARANCE: (picture of any type or written description)

ORIENTATION: (Gay, Straight, Bi, Pan-sexual)

RELATIONSHIP STATUS: (Single, BF/GF=, With X but cheating on them with Y, polyamorous)

TYPE: (Nerd, Jock, Delinquent, Pretty, Cheerleader, Teacher, etc. Can overlap groups)

POWER THEME: (Psychic, Armor Suit, Feral Hybrid, Energy Controller, Speedster etc)

FLAW: (something critical to your character like 'Exposure to X will kill me', 'Must ingest Y to live', 'Can't break a promise', 'Painfully Shy', etc. Make it fun)

N.B. The Flaw is not something to 'balance' powers, it's a personality quirk, cherished habit, dolorous responsibility, deeply held fetish that can spark RP. So going to Comic Books, Spiderman's need to hold down a job but is always late due to heroing = Flaw, him running out of webbing, not a flaw, it's a power balancer.

REPUTATION:  (Should be added after you work out connections to other characters)

BIOGRAPHY:  (Should be added after you work out connections to other characters)

3) Post a response to one of the writing posts below from your proposed character's point of view:

  • It's the day of the big test... You're sweating it because you really need to do well on this... Studied (or not) to the best of your ability and the teacher is about to say, "Ok, begin"...
In 3-5 paragraphs share your character's experience of the test... What did they think about... Do they have any regrets? Any Eureka moments? Do they play it straight or cheat? Give us insight into how your character deals with pressure and what they'll do when the chips are down.

  • It's D-day. That girl/boy you've been admiring for so long? You're going out with them; to do something/go somewhere nice for the day. And you're going to ask them to try dating with you. You have it all planned out. It'll work. Hopefully.
In 3-4 paragraphs, tell us how the day pans out (where do you go and what do you do in the lead up to the question?) and how your character is going to approach his/her 'proposal' to their BF/GF-to-be. Also expand on your character's thoughts and feelings throughout the day and their history with this other person and why they've fallen for them.

When you work up your concept think of a character you'd like to play if the never got powers, as it is our intention to play for a while as 'normal teenagers' before the Event happens granting characters their powers. This is to give us time to flesh out characters into three dimensional individuals whose motives, reactions, habits and foibles are developed before the complication of Superpowers (and trust me, that's what they're going to be). This isn't a game where being the fastest/strongest/most OP will actually be any fun to play, so when you envision your character, think about what your character do to make everything cooler for everyone else and you'll find you're having a blast in the game.

IC Setting Information

Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson High School is a large, comprehensive high school that serves the needs of a diverse student body. It has a world famous STEM program that feeds int Caltech and a theater program that has graduated more then it's fair share of stars. It's faculty are all thought leaders in their field of expertise and hail from all corners of the globe. More students graduate and go to top colleges and unversities then any other high school in the area and the financial aid rewards, in aggregate, are the highest as well. The crown jewel of the school district, it is an shining example of successful education in the 21st century.

All characters are either students or staff from Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson High School in California. They've spent at least a year in school together sharing classes, attending school events and living in the same community so even the "Loner" is a known quantity, if only cursorily.  It's late November and the students are on a school trip to the Copper Mountain Ski Resort in Colorado.

OOC Setting Information

Key points of the game:

  • Remember, until the Something Weird(tm) happens, no one has powers.
  • Characters can have any power type but remember to play the 'starting' version of the character. Think of this as a 'Year One' game.
  • Also, don't forget your FLAW is of critical importance, it's a big part of what makes a character fun to play with
  • All characters are on the ski trip together. Something Weird(tm) will happen in the middle of the night sending odd pulses of energy through the area as well strewing bits of future tech and mystical artifacts across the landscape.

I see this game as 50% Sandbox/50% scripted... Meaning, I'll toss out plot points and weird events for folks to react too but some things will just be handled between characters.

ie
Something goes wrong in the chemistry lab and a strange cloud of gas floats through the halls... That'd be me making Something Happen(tm).

Definitely feel free to negotiate scenes between yourselves and open IC threads for them. Label them with a catchy name, like the name of a Movie/TV episode and put  who is in the scene. Additionally it Open if anyone can join.  I will be posting threads at times for everyone to join.. Or not, whatever makes sense.

ie
Lots of Little Deaths on Prom Night, the Musical (OPEN)
Will she, won't she (Zoe & Rachel)
Bringing home the Gold (Alexander, Candii, Zoe & and Fencing fans)

I'd like to share world building, meaning some folks could become villains if that suits their personalities. Likewise, if you have a villain/gang/bad guy concept, share it with the group. I am always happy to help brainstorm ideas if you get stuck with your characters, so drop me a note in OOC or a PM.

As an FYI, typically writers post at least once a day, 2+ paragraphs in length are very common. This really is not the kind of game for one liners, and you can expect both 1:1 scenes as well as group scenes. Although I am the GM, I see all writers as my co-GMs as we're all working to make the game a great place to play.

I'll amend the prior post with that info... Actually, slightly more important then powers is that we're missing some Types... Meaning we need a Sports Star, Student Government folks, Stoners, and such.... Do you have a concept or idea, Andy?

Oh will you now? ;) We certainly need the Jock archetype filled, but make sure to flesh out his character before deciding his power. As the opening post says, this is a character driven RP, so make sure that your character is interesting both in his bio and in terms of the drama he will cause as he bounces off of the other characters :D And make sure that your power doesn't clash with anybody. :P If you come up with a concept bio, we'll go over it with a fine tooth comb and tell you what we think :)

Men in general judge more by the sense of sight than by that of touch, because everyone can see but few can test by feeling. Everyone sees what you seem to be, few know what you really are; and those few do not dare take a stand against the general opinion. Therefore it is unnecessary to have all the qualities I have enumerated, but it is very necessary to appear to have them. And I shall dare to say this also, that to have them and always observe them is injurious, and that to appear to have them is useful; to appear merciful, faithful, humane, religious, upright, and be so, but with a mind so framed that should you require not to be so, you may be able and know how to change to the opposite.

I think - I might be wrong, so apologies in advance if this is the case - that you work up the bio AND the writing sample (see the Writing Prompts) in this thread, and if you get approved, then you move onto the next stage, which is chatting with the other players about how your character knows them and interacts with them. In your concept bio, try to avoid including other characters until you've had a chance to talk to them. Also, we have quite a lot of straight-A students, so maybe staying away from excellent grades might be an idea (winkwinknudgenudge). The name of the game is variety, after all. Well, it's "We Could Be Heroes," but you get what I mean. :P

Oh okay. Just got here today and saw people already had characters but I saw no sheets so I assumed I was sending a PM. I'll try and have something up later today.

Vergil Tanner

Oh no, people have character sheets, it's just that the majority of the players already went through this on the site where this started before it got moved here. We aren't that far in, but you can review the existing characters once Assh has locked the thread. Those are the currently accepted characters, with an extra two or three waiting for final approval.  :-) If you post up a concept bio using the template, then we can go through it and hopefully point out any issues. :-)

CHARACTER SHEET

NAME: Dontae Jamal King

AGE: 18

SEX: Male

APPEARANCE: He stands about 6'3, which means he's taller than a lot of people, but not so tall that people crane their necks up at him much. He's roughly 240lbs, but as shown, it's all muscle thanks to a life time of sports, eating right, and exercise. He's a handsome young man as well, and the ladies seem to love his smile. He has soft, hazel eyes that seem to draw you in and disarm you. He's from a well off family so he tends to dress well, and tends to flash his cash now and then with jewelry or custom shoes, things like that.

ORIENTATION: Straight

RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Single for the moment

TYPE: Popular Jock with dreams of becoming a rapper

POWER THEME: Density/Gravity Manipulation

FLAW: Negative World View - Despite looking good and being funny and everything like that, Dontae from a young age has always felt like people only like him for the materialistic side of things. The parties, the clothes, cars, the expensive jewelry...even letting friends borrow money like it's nothing. He always fears that one day he'll find out that his "friends" are just hangers on because he's got wealth and status. It happened once before and he dreads it happening again.

REPUTATION:  (Should be added after you work out connections to other characters)

BIOGRAPHY:  Born in Atlanta, Georgia to a famous athlete and a Japanese pop star, Dontae had his passions instilled in him from a young age, just from being around his family. His dad got him into sports at an early age and he excelled in football, basketball, and anything to do with fighting. His mom got him voice and dance lessons and all that stuff as well. Aside from the repetition, he enjoyed it as he was a kid and he was having fun. After a few years, he got a little brother, and a year after that, a twin boy and girl. Life was normal for his family pretty much up until he turned 16. That was the year that Dontae felt the need to reevaluate his life.

The rest of the family were going to visit his mom's family in Tokyo for the weekend, but Dontae had a late practice that Friday, followed by a game Saturday and an award ceremony Sunday. He wasn't able to make it, so he stayed home and told them they could skype with him when they got there. The practice went fine, and he got the game winning touchdown. But that night, his friends wanted to throw a party in celebration. Somehow his house got selected as the party spot, and at that point it was like a snowball rolling downhill.

In just a few hours everything was set up, and his house was raging with people. Drunk, happy, high people with lowered inhibitions. That was when he heard what people really had to say. "Who's house is this? Some rich kid...that guy on the football team. King? Somethin' like that. Well we should get to know each other, maybe he can help me pay off my car!" "Man I wish I lived in a place like this. I bet his mom was on her back for a loooong time to get this much money." And it kept going and going. He was the only one at the party not having fun, and after it got too late and everyone left, nobody even stayed to help him clean up...not even the people who were supposed to be his really good friends. After that his grades dropped, he started doing worse on the field and the court. His parents asked him what was wrong and he finally told them. They had a long talk and afterwards they figured that a move would help the entire family, especially Dontae. So they packed up and left Atlanta, heading up to California where the sun always shined and weed was legal.

More to add later

Scenario 2:

He exhaled deeply when his alarm went off, and with his eyes still closed a lazy hand reached over to fiddle with his phone until the sound died away. "Fuuuuuuck, what time is it?" Looking at his clock, it read 7AM, which meant he had to get ready for the day and all that good stuff. He got up, took a shower, brushed his teeth and made himself look good.

Then he put on some of his best clothes, because today was the day they'd start going out. She'd already said yes to a date, now he just had to impress her enough to take it further than that. Since she'd said yes a week ago, he'd been running around town like a fool setting everything up for the date, and today was the day. He thought about blazing up before school, but he decided against it. He needed to be good all day today if things were going to work. After breakfast, he headed off to school.

He did the usual. Classwork, turned in homework, hung out with friends, maybe skipped a class or two. After school he talked to coach and got the day off from practice, then he fond Alex. He'd seen her a few times during the day, but now they could talk. "Yooooo, pretty lady," he said with a smile as he walked up to her and leaned against her locker. They talked for a while, but eventually they each had to go their separate ways. "Remember, I'm pickin' you up at six. Be ready to have a good time." Grinning and giving her a hug, he snuck a kiss on the cheek before running off and leaving her smiling.

On the drive home, his mind drifted back to Alex. He'd had a crush on her since the day she transferred to their school from Oahu. She was beautiful, and that was the reason he liked her at first, but then he got to know her and found out they had a lot in common. She loved sports, video games...and the girl could smoke like a chimney. They became quick friends and spent a lot of time at his house just hot boxing in his room or out back by the pool.

As their friendship grew, so did their attraction, but there was that whole, "We're good friends, will a relationship ruin that" vibe going on. So for a while nobody made a move, but he finally asked her out, and today was sink or swim. When he got home he started making phone calls to make sure everything and everybody was in place. It took almost an hour, but he called back everybody and was satisfied with how things were going to turn out. He took another shower and changed clothes, then he waited. When it got to 5:30, he called Alex and told her he was on the way.

He got there at six o' clock on the dot, then went through the gentlemanly steps. He rang the door, said hello to her parents, walked her to the car, opened the door...the whole nine. She asked where they were going, and he told her it was a surprise, but she kept asking so he finally caved. "We're goin' to the boardwalk first. That's all you get though, nosy," he said before playfully booping her on the nose. They got there and parked, and when they got out, he took her hand and they began walking. It was all very romantic, just two people walking along on the boardwalk. They kept on until a guy bumped into Dontae.

"Sorry about that. I wasn't payin' attention...this pretty lady on my arm's been hoggin' all of it." The guy nodded like he understood before his face turned into a scowl. "Fuck you!" Before he could react, Dontae was on his back, courtesy of a huge shove. "The fuck?!" Alex shrieked and fell to his side, but looked up when music began blaring and everyone around them was stock still. Dontae stood up and looked around, confusion on his face, but then he turned back to the guy who pushed him. He stepped up, and pushed him back, then the guy pushed him again, and when they both cocked their arms back, they stopped.

Everyone suddenly burst into song and dance around them, with the guy getting in on it and leaving Dontae with Alex in the middle. And then, he joined in too, dancing around and getting really into it before the music slowed down and everyone began slow dancing. "Alex...I known you for a while, and you know I've had the biggest crush on you. This is our first date, but I want more than just one. Will you be my girl?" His heart was beating out of his body with worry and nervousness as he waited for a response. And when she didn't say anything he thought it had been too much; he'd made her uncomfortable or something. But then she just put her hands on his shoulders and pressed herself close against him. "You really went all out huh?" She asked with a smile. He nodded and licked his lips. "You deserve it." She put her head on his chest as they danced around before whispering a soft "Yes". After that, they continued to dance; a perfect start to a perfect night.

New Prompt
Writing Prompt #3

Friday - After School - Home

Dontae slammed on the breaks and turned the wheel of his car hard, sliding to a stop on the large circle driveway. He left his book bag in the car when he jumped out, as he seemed more focused on a crumpled piece of paper in his hand. Slamming the door, the sprinted up the steps to the front door and fumbled with the keys anxiously as he tried to find the right one. He finally did and threw the door open, then realized how much trouble he'd be in if that glass shattered from the force. He caught it, then shut it behind him gently. After that, his excitement returned.

"Yo mom, dad! I'm home and I need to talk to you!" He looked around and didn't see anyone in the rooms near the foyer, but a deep voice from the living room got his attention. "We're in here, and it better be good to interrupt this Game of Thrones marathon. They were just about to cut Ned's head off," his dad said as Dontae made his way into the room. Walking over to them, his kissed his mother on the cheek and hugged his dad, then backed up and held up the orange poster for them both to see. "It's the schools ski trip. Can I go? Last time y'all said no because mom had the big showcase back in Japan. Can I go, pleeeaaaaase?! I can't skip this thing two years in a row."

Brandon gestured for his son to hand him the poster, and he took it, then looked it over with Aiko by his side. "Well? We did keep him to ourselves last time, and he hasn't screwed up too bad this year. He smiled, knowing his dad at least was in his corner. "See mom? Please just say ye-" "DUUUUCK!!" Turning around, Dontae saw a football sailing for his head, but it was too late to move out of the way. It popped him directly in the forehead with a sick sounding slap. "Aw dammit that hurt!", he shouted as he bent over and held a hand to the tender spot on his head. Looking up, he saw his youngest brother Marcus standing there trying to hold in a laugh. "Ooooo I'm gonna kill you!" Marcus took off running and Dontae took a step after him before stopping and turning back to his parents. "Ma, can I go?" She looked him over, then the poster. "Give me a few more episodes to decide." He wasn't sure what that meant, so he just nodded before tearing off after his brother.

Several Hours Later

Dontae was holding an ice pack to his forehead and watching cartoons when a knock sounded against his door. "Come in." His mother opened the door with a smile on her face. "I talked to your dad and despite what I've heard about that ski trip, I think you deserve to go. But there are conditions. One, you don't go crazy and disgrace all of us by blowing up the lodge or something. Two, you have to buy everything you need for the trip. No asking me or your father at the last moment. You will buy everything. Wakarimasu ka?"

He knew she was serious when she switched over to Japanese. "Rikai, okāsan," he said in return with a smile on his face. He dropped the ice pack and hopped over to his mother, picking her up and kissing her on the cheek. "Watashi wa, okāsan ga anata o aishiteimasu!" "Fine, fine, put me down! I have to get back downstairs; Theon's about to betray the Starks."

Leaving him alone, his mom closed the door behind her and his thoughts drifted to the trip. So many things he wanted, no, needed to do. First of course was just running the slopes on his board. He hadn't seen any powder in a while and wanted to get a few downhill runs. After that was on location smoke session. He wanted to find a nice, undisturbed peak and just smoke, then look out over the mountain. He had a feeling he'd find nirvana or something like that if he did...and if he had friends with him, it'd just be fun regardless of what happened. And he wouldn't say no to getting it on in a tent in the middle of the night.

With all the good thoughts though came a bad one. What if he screwed up on the slopes? He hadn't been snowboarding in ages and was probably rusty. If he fell he'd never live it down. Or even worse, what if somebody started up a rumor about him while they were up there? He knew how people liked to talk, and he knew a lot of them were fakes. Smile to your face and talk shit as soon as you leave the room. Just like that his good vibes turned to bad and he began to get paranoid about the trip. He needed something to calm his nerves. Going into his closet, he opened up his goody bag.

"Fuuuuuuck man. I know mom don't like me to smoke so much, but fuck it I need this right now. 'Fore I think myself into an early grave or somethin'." He locked his door and rolled a blunt full of some nice purple kush. After that he turned on Netflix and started the IT Crowd. "Time to get toasty," he said with a smile as he lit up and took a big hit. He smoked and watched the show, watched the show and smoked. And during one joke he laughed for a minute straight and cried.

He fell over, his ribs hurting as he continued to laugh and that's when he knew it. "Oh man...I am definitely in the zone. I am...I'm in it." Looking down, he realized his blunt had gone out, so he lit the tip again and started back smoking.

Okey dokey, we'll all take a bit to read your bio and discuss, then one of us will get back to you on this thread. :)

Curious, though I'll probably have to go for something a tad different from initially anticipated, considering some of the abilities already taken.
Well, if I had to give a reason for my actions, I guess it's because I love people. I guess I wanted to see the faces that mankind has to offer.

Welp, feel free to whip up a bio. HOWEVER, I must stress a point made in the initial post; create a character you would like to play even if they didn't have powers. The powers should be something you add in after the bio. Build the power around the character, not the character around the power, since this is primarily a character driven RP. Don't worry about the power until after you've crafted your character, especially given that the place we paused the RP, the characters still didn't have their powers. :)

Juggtacular, hope you don't mind that I am doing this here but as a group we all crique each others characters and offer suggestions to one another or request clarifications about things in a character... So, in my own way, I'm saying "welcome to the deep end." First off, a couple of koodos. I like Dontae, always nice to see a nicely written character sketch and a character with a PoV. Your writing sample was fun and I liked the details you shared about Alex. If I were NPCing her I'd have some nice hooks to work with.

I need you to ditch the Homicides and PTSD.... Reading the flaw pointed out to me that we have too many characters like that already... Can I ask you to reflect on what he is to come up with another one. For example, he's a sport star who wants to be a Rapper... That could make for a bombastic 'I'mma Boss' character who lords it over everyone... Also... What if he had no Flow... Sure he WANTS to be a Rapper but what if he's talking o K-Pop for that... Skills with no street cred... Basically, the Fla should spark fun RP with others and PTSD will just put him at the back of the line.

No problem. And thanks, love a good challenge.

As for the flaw, no problem. I can come up with something else. Might not have an idea till later tonight or sometime tomorrow, but I'll figure something out. XD

Happy to hear that... Honestly it would be 'unique' to have a character with wealth and no mental issues.... That's why I'd rather see you play to type rather then take a left turn into the Batman-verse. So think rich boy "problems" ... Hell even "Low Self Esteem: he believes people only like him because of the money he spends like water, the parties he throws and the car he drives" it'd flesh him out and have him want people to like him but all he knows is how to 'buy' them...

But really, go ahead. I see there're a few other people interested, hoping to see their profiles soon too.

I believe that stealing is a form of flattery :) So go for it

Also, I've a few things I want to know about Dontae:

  • What Sport(s) does he excel at?
  • Is he the Captain of any team?
  • What clubs/school activities does he participate in?
  • Will he be NPCing his siblings and parents (no powers for them) or will he need me to?
  • Why does he smoke pot?

1. He's a natural athlete so he can pick up most of them after a bit, but his two main sports are football and basketball.

2. Football Team Captain. He's not the Captain of the B-Ball team, but he is the Point Guard, and they usually call plays on the floor, etc... So he'll have some team respect from that.

3. Poetry Club, any club to do with Japan or Asia, and probably anything to do with music, especially if it's like editing or studio work.

4. I can NPC them if necessary. They won't be around so much that 5 people will be difficult.

5. He always saw people smoking weed, and he had friends who smoked, etc, etc... One day he asked his dad if he could, just to try it out. And his dad told him that he'd rather his first time be in a controlled environment. So he smoked with his dad, got blazed, and he's been smoking ever since. He likes the way it makes him feel, and it relaxes him. Let's him forget his troubles for a while and not worry about anything. Plus no harmful side effects...aside from a massive appetite and lethargy.

Here is my character rough draft! :)

NAME: Maya Morales

AGE: 17

SEX: Female

APPEARANCE: She is about 6'0, which places her front and center in the, 'tall woman' category. Thanks to a healthy diet and a nonstop work-out regime, every inch of her is muscle.  She has dark brown eyes that match her hair, and a tan complexion that would probably still be present even if she didn't spend all her time outdoors.  Despite the killer body, Maya can typically be caught in hand-me-downs from her older sister's,work-out clothes, or designer duds bestowed on her by kinder and more fashionable friends.

ORIENTATION: Straight

RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Single

TYPE: Jock

POWER THEME: Weather Manipulation

FLAW: She is dyslexic and almost failing in every single subject.  Since her freshman year she's been struggling with her studies, and is constantly faced with the threat of being forced off the track team.  The only reason she hasn't been forced out already is because her coach has advocated on her behalf more times than she can count.   She is also desperate to prove herself.  All of her accomplishments thus far have already been achieved by her older siblings.  She would give something-anything- to separate herself from the pack.

REPUTATION:

BIOGRAPHY:  She was born and raised in California, as were her four older brothers and two older sisters.  Her parents immigrated to the United States after they were married, whereupon they automatically began their fight to achieve, "The American Dream".  They truly felt that they achieved this after the birth of their first daughter (Maya's older sister Rosia) when Maya's father was finally able to open his own Auto-shop.  The shop where two of Maya's four brothers now work.  Being the youngest in a family of nine, Maya's home life, while always warm, was a little chaotic.  She'd been able to relate to home alone a little too well when she was a kid, and had more than one story about accidentally being left behind at the mall (only for her mother to rush back six minutes later, kissing her cheeks and yelling at her for not staying close by).  So while Maya has fully experienced a loving household, she can't actually remember the last time her parent's had attended a parent-teacher conference.  And while her parents mean well (yelling at her and informing her that she was grounded when she was caught breaking curfew) she couldn't actually remember the last time they followed through on any of the punishments she was due for.  (Note: With such a huge family I will totally take responsibility for npcing them when necessary. ))

While no means poor, it was made very clear to Maya early on that the only way she was going to get to college was through a scholarship.  Fortunately, just like almost every other member of the Morales clan, Maya was gifted in the physical arts.

No one could run like Maya could.

She started breaking records in her grade in the seventh grade, and she hasn't stopped since.  She made junior varsity in her freshman year, and now that she is a Junior she is the best member the varsity track team has.  Everything should be going perfectly for the young woman, if it weren't for the fact that Maya was also arguably one of the worst students at Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson.

Every child in the Morales family was an Athlete (Except for Michael, but every family had their black sheep)  and every one of them had attended Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson.  Nearly every trophy in the glass cases of the high school are present are thanks to a Morales, and quite a few of them have the last name written on the inscription.  Maya was no different, winning more than one championship on behalf of her school.  However, rather than be awash with acclaim for her action, the people around her seemed to react as though Maya's victories were something to be expected, rather than rewarded.  She was a champion athlete, but was unable to stand out after coming from a family full of champion athletes.   Maya should be proud of the fact that she was captain of the track team, and an active member of the girl's basketball team. Instead she was was too busy trying to escape from the shadow of her sibling's success.

Maya's siblings and their accomplishments in order:
Michael: Age 28,  the only nonathletic member of the Morales clan, and their first college graduate.  Became a Doctor and is currently in Kenya working for Doctors without Borders.
Rosia: Age 25, fencing champion in high school, got a full ride to college and became a nutritionist.
Bruno: Age 23, Lucas's twin, Linebacker in High school.  He is a line backer for the Oakland Raiders.
Lucas: Age 23, Bruno's twin, linebacker in High school.  Broke his leg in college and currently works as a mechanic at the Morales Auto Repair shop.
Valentina: Age 21, track star and pole vaulter in high school.  She is living with her husband in Los Angeles.  She is currently trying to find work as an actress.
Luis:  Age 20, basketball and soccer champ in high school, dropped out of Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson to go to vocational school.  He is currently working as a mechanic at the Morales Auto Repair shop.

Scenario 1:

The clock kept ticking.

Had the clock always been that loud?  She could hear the ticking from the other side of the room. It was too distracting!  How was she supposed to focus on math when that damn clock kept catching her attention.  The clock, and the gym class outside.  She could see them from her seat by the window.  They were playing soccer, and it looked like they were having a good time.   She should be out there.  She'd be running circles around everyone else, kicking the ball through some lazy-bones legs and straight into the net.  Maybe she'd add a bit of pizzazz and make it a sliding kick.  Her team would cheer, the coach would give her a grin, and she would be a champion.  The champion.

The clock kept ticking.

She tugs her dark brown hair out of it's ponytail before quickly pulling it back into one again, all while staring down at the numbers on the page in front of her.  She wasn't the champion right now.  She wasn't anything right now.  How was she supposed to know what that symbol meant?  Had they learned that symbol?  She glances up from her test to glance at the teacher and the other students.  Everyone looked really focused, all of them scribbling the answers down like it was the most obvious thing in the world.  Mr. McDowd-the bastard- was sitting at his desk, but glanced up when he felt her gaze on him.  Instantly she looked back down at her paper.

She might as well have been taking the test in greek.  The class was half over, and she'd only answered six of the twenty questions on the exam.  She couldn't fail another test.  Coach would kill her if she bombed another one.  But what was she supposed to do?  It wasn't like she could study.  She didn't even know how to study for a math test.  Tugging at the edge of the designer brand skirt she'd been lucky enough to borrow from one of her richer friends, Maya tries to remember just what a pythagorean theorem was.

The clock kept ticking.

By the time class was over, Maya had successfully finished fifteen of the twenty questions.  She'd be lucky to get eight of them right.  She hadn't cheated, though the opportunity had been present.  She knew the right people, she could have figured something out.  But she hadn't done it.  Why hadn't she done it?  If she'd just gotten herself a cheat sheet, she could have given her curve a huge bump in the right direction.  Why hadn't she done it?

The bell rings, and Maya was out of her desk and in the hall before most of her peers had risen from their desks.  Fleeing into the bathroom and finding privacy in one of the stalls, Maya sits on the sits on the toilet sit.  Covering her face in her hands, Maya fights the tears that threatened to fall.  Why wouldn't she just fucking cheat?

Scenario 3

Sitting at the kitchen table with her mother and father, Maya smiles eagerly as she shows the pair the ski trip flier and consent form.  "I can go, right?"  She hadn't been able to go last year: punishment from the school for horribly bad grades.  But her G.P.A was a tiny bit higher this time around, so she was free from the ban she'd been placed under last time around.  "Everyone else has gotten to go." She was speaking about every other Morales child.  The Morales family wasn't flush with extra money, but their children had never wanted when it came to things like this.

"Ahh, it's disgusting how much money this school takes from us.  Public school is supposed to be free!  But they catch us with things like this, it's ridiculous."  Her Father bemoans even as he begins to write a check to the school.  "They should stop taking you kids on such extravagant trips.  What does skiing have to do with your education, huh? You should skip it." He complains as he writes his name on the permission slip.  "It's just supposed to be for fun, everyone likes skiing."  Her Father snorts at this even as he hands his youngest daughter the paperwork. "For this much money,I could have gotten a group rate and we could have all gone skiing."

Lucas entered the kitchen, ready and eager to make trouble, but barely batting an eye at the trio at the table.  He walks to the fridge and grabbing himself a gatorade, begins the show.  "Ski trip huh?  I remember that, fun times."  He takes a quick gulp of his red beverage before smirking at his little sister.  "I'm pretty sure that's where Bruno got laid for the first time."  He takes another drink of the red, managing to maintain a poker face for about four seconds before he starts snickering.

"WHAT?!"  Their Mother squawks, slamming her hands down on the table as she rises to her feet.

"Ohmygod." Maya's hands cover her face.  Why would Lucas say something like that?

"Lucas, you cannot mean to say such a thing!-Where is my rosary?  Someone bring me my rosary." By then their mother was already halfway across the kitchen, grabbing the phone, and calling her recklessly sinful son.  "Bruno!?  Bruno!!  Are you there?  I know you are there.  Pick up the phone right now you stupid boy! When was the last time you went to church-huh?  You think God isn't paying attention?  Because he is--and so am I!  Bruno, I know you can hear me--Pick up the phone!-"  The rest of their mother's voicemail is unheard as she paces out of the kitchen and into the living room.  Despite this, everyone knew he would not be picking up in the middle of the call, nor was he casually overhearing Mrs. Morales's voicemail as she spoke, because Bruno's personal phone (and the number Mrs. Morales had dialed) was a cell phone.

"Ohmygod." Maya repeats, all one word, utterly humiliated by her family even though no one else could see them.

Their Father scowled at the snickering Morales child and it didn't take long before he swatted him on the back of the head.  "En bocas cerradas no entran moscas!" He lectures before going off after his wife, trying to smooth down the chaos that had been started without any good reason.

With both parents gone, Maya shoves the completed paperwork into her bag before sending a scowl of her own towards her brother.  "No sirves para nada"  Everyone in their family knew God didn't really understand insults in spanish, so she wouldn't need to confess to insulting her brother.

His snickering, which had gone when their father had hit him in the back of the head, returned and turned into full fledged laughter.  Ruffling his little sister's hair and ignoring her glare and her attempt to duck from the affectionate gesture, he grins down at her.  "Have fun on the trip.  Keep yourself nice and toasty."

Blowing hair out of her face after he leaves the room, Maya finally rises from her own seat.  There was used women's skii equipment somewhere in the attic, equipment that had been new when Rosia went on the trip, used when Valentina went on the trip, and almost falling apart now that it was her turn.  She didn't really care though, she just wanted a chance to skii.  A chance to get into that speed zone.  She'd gone a few times over the years on family trips, but because the three daughters had had to share equipment, it wasn't exactly the most fun she'd ever had.  This was a chance to play around with a sport she didn't get a chance to try out very often...and maybe have a few extracurricular amusements as well.  She smiles to herself as she enters the attic.  She'd heard plenty about what went on at these kinds of trips, and was ready and eager to be a part of it.  God didn't pay attention to people surrounded by snow, right?

JamesSureWould

this seems very interesting. I do always love teen heroes, so let's see if I can throw something together

CHARACTER SHEET

NAME: Cameron Grey

AGE: 17

SEX: Male

APPEARANCE: Cameron is tall enough boy (Standing at about 5'11") but he's also rather lanky. Someone once described him as 'completely made of lines', which, given his tall, almost bean pole-esque, body and his sharp facial features, was rather accurate

ORIENTATION: Straight-ish

RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Single

TYPE: Artsy Kid/Geek - Cameron isn't necessarily a nerd in the traditional sense, but he is a real theater geek. He's a senior member of the drama club, and has been featured in several of the school's plays/musicals. He also is quite interested in strategy games, and is currently trying to start a wargames club at the school

POWER THEME: Duplication - Cameron can make copies of himself. They’re all based on the same DNA, they have the same memories, and possess something akin to a hive mind. So, Cameron can experience the things his clones do and vice versa.

FLAW: Obsessive. Not to the point of needing to wash his hands 5 times before he can leave the house, or needing to only step on brown tiles at school. No, he takes medication and gets therapy to make sure it doesn't affect him that much. But it's still a part of his personality. He has a hard time stopping doing something once he gets it into his mind to try. It’s not uncommon for him to spend to take 5 days to write and rewrite an essay that others could write in an hour, or for him to go over acting scenes a dozen times after everyone else involved was satisfied.

Flirt. Cameron is slightly notorious for hitting on anything that moves. Teachers, staff, other students, it doesn't seem to matter to him. If it's a girl, he'll likely already hit on her. And it doesn't seem to be exclusive to girls either; there are a few boys in school who've been hit on by Cameron (though, in those cases, it remains to be seen whether or not he'd follow through). His constant attempts to get into the pants of girls has left him with a few victories, a few sighs of pity, a few glares of contempt and a few angry boyfriends.

REPUTATION:  (Should be added after you work out connections to other characters)

BIOGRAPHY:  Cameron was born in California to an Engineer Father and an actress mother. While his father was very successful in his field of chemical engineering, Cameron’s mother was less successful. She had a few bit appearances one some tv shows that would have loved to be called ‘3rd rate’. And while she did alright for herself with some theater performances, she was the one who was home for Cameron the most. His father worked long hours to support the family, so it often fell on his mother to care for Cameron. She changed the most diapers, she answered more of the ‘hard questions’ that every child has growing up, and she was there for more of his plays.

The only thing that his father helped Cameron with more than his mother did was his obsessive nature. Years of suffering with his own had left him numerous ways to help turn the condition into a potential tool.  Of course, the pair still suffered from their oddities. Especially when their meds wear off after work/school. It was not an uncommon sight for the pair to re-sort their clothes twelve different times, or to clean the same dish enough that paint would fade off. It was actually something of a joke among his parents; they knew Cameron was his father’s child simply because of his mannerisms.

Cameron’s life before high school was rather unremarkable. He was a good enough student, routinely getting B’s but his perfectionist streak often kept him from completing all of his homework which kept him from getting perfect marks. He was sociable enough, but other children often got annoyed by his insistence that they redo something again and again.

The family themselves are well enough off. They’ve never really wanted for anything, but they’ve never really lived beyond their needs either. Their house is a larger than average, but nothing close to a mansion. Their two Cars are nice, but not extravagant or flashy.
In fact, they only have two things that would really strike an outsider as odd. The first is that each member of the house has a personal psychotherapist that they see once a week, and have on speed dial. Cameron and his father have one for their ocd and other issues, and his mother has one for depression due to a miscarriage she suffered three years ago. The other odd thing is a laboratory located in a retrofitted bomb shelter in their backyard, which Cameron’s father uses to do experiments when he is away from work but is struck with an idea.(Should be added after you work out connections to other characters)

Writing Sample: Scenario 1

Cameron strode into the classroom with an aura of confidence that seemed to radiate off of him. Tests were one of the few times where his obsessive nature actually played to his favor. His various medications kept him relaxed enough to not be concerned about it, but he still studied endlessly for the test. It was just the only way he knew how to cope with a problem; perfect the execution through constant practice. He’d read the chapters and done the practice problems so often that he could see them if he closed his eyes.

So, perhaps that’s why he never seemed to display the nerves that some others students did on test day. He knew that he’d put in time weeks ago, and this was where he saw the rewards for his efforts. In fact, it was one of the few places he saw rewards for his perfectionist streak.

After all, despite his many attempts to find it, there was no one perfect way to act in a given scene. His constant retakes insured that he, and the other actors, knew his lines backward and forward, but he could never see any noticeable difference between his own acting abilities and those of any other actor in the school.

He got good enough grades on his homework, but he didn’t turn in enough of it in time for it really ensure he got consistent good grades. He dreaded turning in math problems that he wasn’t completely sure of the answers to, or english papers that didn’t convey his meaning exactly right. His teachers had gotten used to him turning in things days, or even a week, late; not because he needed the extra time to finish it, but because he needed the extra time to finish it exactly perfectly.

No, tests were where he was able to shine. It was where he could put his obsessive nature to good use before hand, and just coast back on the day of the exam.

His constant study habits meant that he was usually well prepared for any pop-quizzes that the teacher would give, but he was never confident during those. His heart would beat out of his chest, and he could never convince himself that he had actually done well on it until he saw the results.  The knowledge that he hadn’t done everything in his power to ace the test was something that he never quite got used to, no matter how many pop quizzes his teachers gave out.

There are few truths that eventually all humans learn. Death is as much of a constant as life. Light and dark are two sides of the same coin, one incapable of existing without the other. If someone asks if you're a god, you say yes. But there is one truth that is often overlooked, and it's a rather simple one; Geese are assholes.

It was this life truth that Cameron Grey was most preoccipied with as he was running away from a swarm of four angry fowls.
'How did I end up here' Cameron thought to himself as a goose managed to bite him on the ass.

Of course he knew how he ended up there; after all, when his father told him that he would have to raise the money for the school ski trip himself,  Cameron quickly realized how few jobs there were for a teen with no work experience who needed cash fast. He briefly considered prostitution or drug dealing, but decided against them. For one, there were too many variables, too many things he couldn't control. For another, he couldn't enjoy the ski trip if he was behind bars.

So, a quick glance through the wanted section of Craigslist brought him to the Shady Groves Golf Club. He was given a simple enough job, to follow golfers and collect any balls they lost, and a decent enough paycheck was promised to him.

The one thing he was told by the man who gave him the job was that 'Geese are not ducks, alright? If a geese has a ball, you let him keep that ball.' At the time it seemed like just a bit of a strange joke, but as Cameron felt the teeth of a goose rip his jeans, he wished he'd listen to the man. The man who was missing a finger...

Ordinarily Cameron would have listened, but this was a perfect storm of tempation. He was following a cute girl who always gave him a wink and a smile whenever he gave her back a wayward ball, and he hadn't let a ball go all day. It was the last hole. His obsessive nature wouldn't let him ruin a perfect streak.  He was in the zone, and no over-grown chicken was going to change that.

Of course, that's what Cameron thought before he snagged the ball from Goose's nest. Apparently geese think that golf balls look exacttly like their own eggs.  And apprently, just because you can only see one goose, that doesn't mean more aren't very close by. And apparently Geese will instinctively start to chase something (or someone) that they see another gokse chasing. These were all things that Cameron learned about geese that day, things he may never forget.

So with a flock of geese chasing him, a golf ball in his hand, and some diginity that hoped to remain intact, Cameron decided to skip rational and try something unconventional. With a quick lunge, he reached for a large branch off the ground and turned to face his feathered attackers in a fencing stance. A quick jab at one caused the flock to scatter, and three geese were flying off towards the horizon.

It wasn't until a few milliseconds later, after Cameron had let down his guard, that he remembered there were four geese. As that realization dawned on him, Cameron learned yet another thing about geese; apparently a goose ramming into an unaware teenager is enough to knock over said teenager and send him rolling down a small hill, and into a pond.

Apparently satisfied in its victory over Cameron,  the goose flew off to join its compatriots. When he had finally mustered up the willpower to pull himself out of the pond, and thus addmiting that strange series of events had actually occured, the girl he had been finding golfballs for was at the bank of the pond to offer help.

"Are you alright? Do you need a towel to dry off?" She asked with what appeared to genuine concern, ulike the caddie behind her who couldn't seem to stop laughing.

"I'm alright" Cameron finally managed to respond. "And the pond did me some good anyways. I was feeling abit toasty, what with being next to somebody as hot as you all day"

The next thing Cameron remebered was flash of white light as the girl smacked him on his head

----

The rest of Cameron's time spent at the golf course was largerly uneventful. He did his job, and he got the money he was promised. After a few weeks, he finally had enough to pay for the trip and afford some small luxuries.

Most kids at school talked about how hard it was to convince their parents to sign off on the trip, and how they had to jump through hoops to get their parents to agree. For cameron, that was never really the issue. He was an only child,  and his parent's trusted him enough.

But whenever anyone asked if he had earned the ski trip, Cameron would just smile, think about the goose bite on his ass and the girl bump on his head, and nod.

CHARACTER SHEET

NAME: Ryan Crawford

AGE: 18

SEX: Male

APPEARANCE:

ORIENTATION: Straight

RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Single

TYPE: Jockish Nerd

POWER THEME: Teleportation. At the time of gaining his powers, Ryan can teleport to any place he can see or accurately visualize. (i.e. his bedroom, a location in the school.)

FLAW: GM"s Choice- All the flaws I have typed up are rejected for one reason or another so just give me one you want and Ill play it.

REPUTATION:  To be announced.

BIOGRAPHY:

Born in Ohio, Ryan and his family moved to California when he was ten. Ryan enjoyed playing a few sports such as Snowboarding, Baseball, and Hockey. While growing up he did his best to get better at these sports and joined as many teams as his school offered. He wan't a natural at any of these but he did find them to be a good way to build character and became a teammate that others could count on in a pinch. Ryan managed to make friends on every spectrum easily. Jocks, Nerds, and would be Stoner's seemed to get along with the boy due to his laid back nature. Enamored with comics, board games, and just a bit of trivia Ryan quickly picked up the game Dungeons and Dragons and started to develop a sort of addiction to the game and spending time with his friends. In an attempt to impress his more popular friends he often became the fall guy for many of their antics, leading him to trouble with both his school and his parents. This would be something he never grew out of but he did learn to say no from time to time.

When Ryan turned 15, he broke his right leg and had to stop playing as many sports as he was. Cutting back he stuck to Hockey, feeling it was a great stress reliever. Sadly the break did not heal correctly and he now walks a little funny, almost like he has a constant, light limp. Still he kept his friends who were both Jocks and Geek's alike. He continued to go to his former team's games and give support from the crowd. Ryan has held the same job in a local game shop since he was sixteen and placed back most of his earnings for big events such as buying his first car and trying to pay for a trade school after he graduates.

If you asked Ryan what he wanted to do after school he would most likely shrug and say. "Wherever life leads, that's what Ill do." But really he hopes to make the next big board game. Ryan does not have his head in the clouds however and plans of becoming an electrician like his father. His dad always has work and it seems like a job he could pick up on easy since he could ask his dad for help. Would he call it a dream job? No but he would call it a safe bet.

Ryan didn't date much, instead he had a single long term relationship. Jen who he started dating when he was in the ninth grade seemed like the perfect girl for him. She was a nerd, but still enjoyed watching and playing alot of sports. Some of them Ryan really liked. Short brown hair framed a stunningly beautiful face. She was tall and had curves that looked great on her body. Ryan always said that she was out of his league but she laughed it off. Things started to go bad for the two when Ryan broke his leg, forcing him to drop out of alot of sports. They stuck it out for another two years but she constantly said that she wanted to be with a star and if Ryan couldn't keep up with some of the other jocks in school than she would find someone who could. The two called it quits after two hard years.

Grades never really mattered to Ryan but he managed to keep grades good enough to stay in sports, however his family constantly push him to do better claiming "Your never going to get into a good college if you aren't the best." This saying has grown to haunt Ryan's day dreams. Still he does try to please everyone and that seems to be his biggest problem.

Scenario:
Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide
It's D-day. That girl/boy you've been admiring for so long? You're going out with them; to do something/go somewhere nice for the day. And you're going to ask them to try dating with you. You have it all planned out. It'll work. Hopefully.

[Bleah not my best work. :(  ]

It had taken alot of money and favors to get everything ready for today. Ryan paid friends of his long time crush Jenny, to place notes in her desk's, locker and bags. Flowers sent to her house in the morning, and little things that had some sort of significance to her in some way in places she liked to visit. All of this was meant to be a scavenger hunt and lead Jenny to Ryan's house so he could ask her to go steady. The two had gone on a few dates in the past and Ryan had really connected with her.

Ryan woke up that morning, quickly got dressed and rushed to send the flowers to Jenny's house. His dirty blonde/brown hair was left unkept and his dark blue shirt was only half tucked in while a white button up shirt was left hanging open covered his torso. The button up shirt hung down just below his hips and partially covered up his dark blue jeans. Red high top Converse were laced up tightly on his feet. While his clothes didn't seem like they would work well together, Ryan pulled off the look well. Walking to school, Ryan thought back on their first date and remembered when he found out that she too was a nerd in many ways. Her father had got Jenny into Dungeons and Dragons at a young age and that alone was enough to get Ryan's attention. Just as impressive to Ryan was the fact that Jen liked Hockey. Maybe not as much as Ryan but she knew her teams and players. While at school Ryan had a hard time paying attention to his classes. He was to interested in watching Jenny try to figure out who had been leaving her notes and sent the flowers to her house. His heart raced and he checked in with all of her friends between classes to make sure Jenny was not being freaked out by his tactics. He could see why someone would find what he was doing to be boarder line crazy.

Towards the end of the day, after Ryan had returned home his doorbell rang. Ryan raced to the door and flung it open. The brown haired, green eyed baby faced Jenny stood in his doorway with a sly smirk on her face. Ryan invited her in and the two talked for a long while. Apparently Jenny had recognized the handwriting of Ryan after the first note and knew what was happening. Apparently Jenny planned on talking to him over the weekend about going out full time but Ryan simply beat her two it...

Ok, another writing prompt for everybody ... Tackle it when you're pretty much 'done' with your character proposal :)
.
Poster's go up in early October advertising the school's trip to the Copper Mountain Ski Resort. The place is described as a Winter Wonderland where anything can happen, and the buzz about the school is it always does. Everything from awesome displays of skiing and boarding prowess to epic parties and scandalous hook ups to award winning nature photography and inspired artwork have all been known to come out of this annual trip. There are even rumors about the boy who ate the yellow snow and the girl who spotted a yeti ...but maybe she was the one eating the bad snow?
.
Given the expense, semi scandalous air about the event and the fact that its one of THE events of the school's social season... What did your character have to do to get:

  • Their parent's permission
  • The money to go
  • everything that they needed for the trip
.
Also, what sorts of things do they intend to do with their days and their nights? What do they hope will happen? What will cause them to die with embarrassment if it came to pass?
.
To Spice things up, please use the following words at least once:

  • Duck
  • Skip
  • Toasty
  • Zone
Told from the perspective of Ryan:

Trip to the mountains, sounded like fun. From what I had heard in years past everyone really had a blast and there was no reason to think that this year would be any different. I couldn't afford to go last year nor could I find the time to. However this year I have vacation time and haven't really spent any more money than I had to. I already have my snowboard and some very warm clothes because of my past in sports playing. The trip itself should be easy to cover, its getting my parent's permission that might take some effort. I think that because of my injury they have become slightly overprotective of me. I can't really blame them though, after all, the break did happen while snowboarding. Maybe if I promise them  I won't snowboard they will let me go.

After school I walked home with some friends, one by one they broke off our five man group to go to their own house. After about an hour of walking I found myself alone for the last stretch of road. My pace was surprisingly fast today, maybe I had some extra energy or the excitement of the trip was just making me want to get home faster. I wanted to run but the feeling of looking like I would end up skipping held me back. When I walked into my small two floor house I closed the white, wooden door behind me and locked it. "Hello?" I called out, my parents cars were in the parking lot but the house was silent. I walked past the stuffed Duck that rested next to the house phone.

"DAD! MOM!" I shouted when I came to the flight of stairs that led up to the bedrooms. The house was as silent as a grave. Deciding to wait for a bit before continuing my search for my parents I gingerly walked up the stairs. My room had a blue door, I don't know why my parents decided my favorite color was blue when I was born but they decided to make my door and carpet blue...It creaked open slowly and light from the window hit my face and nearly blinded me for a moment. My snowboard was mounted on the wall above my window looking me in the face, almost daring me to strap it on. I walked up to it and pulled it off the wall gently.

I sat on my soft double bed and placed the snowboard in my lap. Gently I ran my fingertips along the smooth waxed wood. It had scratches from past runs down snowbanks and hills but the sunburst yellow paint looked great still. A smile crossed my lips and an idea wiggled into my brain. Standing up I walked to the staircase and stepped into the boots of the board. I looked down the stair case and bent my knees low. With a gentle hop I started to slide down the stairs one by one. Slowly picking up speed until...BANG! I crashed into the wall at the end of the stairs. Aside from a bruised pride I was o.k. Hell even the wall was fine. It honestly felt good to get back on the board.

My parents however heard me crash into the wall of all things...The both of them ran into the hall and scowled at me. My mother's green eyes beamed down at me from behind her dark brown bangs. She was shorter than me but I had been half on the ground, making sure I wasn't hurt. Dad however smiled, possibly trying not to laugh. "Hey guys, I was looking for you before....I fell." I said sheepishly. Dad reached out and helped me up and mom walked over to check the wall. "I thought you decided to give that up." She scolded. "Well, there is a ski trip at school coming up. I can pay for it but I need a permission slip signed." I said while reaching into my back pocket. Grasping a slip of paper that had some details about the trip I handed it over to my parents and started to unstrap the board.

"I don't mind if you go, but you need to convince your mom I think." Dad said and patted my shoulder before returning to the toasty living room and turning on the T.V. Mom however looked a bit less happy about the idea of me leaving for more than a day. "Mom please. I could really use this after Jen and me broke up. It will help take my mind off her and maybe I can bond with some old friends." I pleaded and gave my mom the best puppy dog face I could.

....uuuhhhh Alright fine. Go. She jotted down her name on the paper and handed it back to me then walked off to join dad. A sly grin crossed my face and I picked up the board. She didn't even say I couldn't take the board. Quickly I rushed upstairs and started to pack my winter clothes. I was honestly glad that I hadn't tossed them out after giving up on boarding. My mind was in the zone, focused on spending the days boarding with friends and the nights maybe getting to know some of the girls in my class, hell maybe I could even get over Jessica. I could only hope that my leg didn't cause me to wipe out in front of some of the better looking girls in class. It would most likely haunt me for a long time. At best though I would make some new friends, you could never have to many of those.

@JamesSureWould & Batman4560: Thanks for applying, we've begun to look and discuss, and we'll get back to you as soon as we can! ^_^

@AribethAmkiir: I will endeavor to answer your question to the best of my abilities. assleigh can correct me, if I'm wrong on anything. In We Could Be Heroes (WCBH), the RP basically goes from one major event, break time, another major event, so on and so forth. So for example, we all start off at the ski trip in Colorado. When that is done, the characters all split up into various smaller groups to RP smaller plots for character growth and development (ie, forming new relationships, getting to grips with their powers, finding a date for the upcoming formal, maybe fight off some minor villain or a robber, etc) before we go to the next major school event, which is the upcoming formal. Hopefully, everyone will have a date there. But I'm going off tangent. So basically, we gather, break, gather, and break. Major events need not be a major school event (which would naturally demand that all or most students attend, but alsocan be  other plots large enough to bring our entire cast together. So the prom is one month after the ski trip. So that means, all smaller RP plots will start and end in that one month before the prom. That, I guess, is the closest explanation for time in WCBH that I can give you.

CHARACTER SHEET

NAME: Nichole Drake

AGE: 18

SEX: Female

APPEARANCE:
Nichole appears to be your average “girl next door”.  A gentle smile, honey-brown colored eyes, and a fair complexion help make her an attractive girl.  At 5’5”, she’s about the average height for a girl her age.  She has an athletically shaped body which remains that way due to her participation in soccer.  Like many teenage girls, her hair color changes often between blonde and brown, or some mix of the two.

ORIENTATION: Straight

RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Single

TYPE: Class Clown, Artsy Girl, Jock, Girl Next Door.

POWER THEME: Sound Manipulation – She can mimic, intensify, hush, and distort, as well as, warp, strengthen, echo, speed up, and slow down sound.  Sound meaning a periodic disturbance of the medium (air, ground, water, etc) that radiates outward in straight lines in the form of a pressure wave.  The effect these waves produce upon the ear is perceived as sound.  From the point of view of physics, sound is considered to be the waves of vibratory motion themselves, whether or not they are heard by the human ear.

FLAW: Nichole has a deep seeded need to feel wanted and to fit in.

REPUTATION:  (Should be added after you work out connections to other characters)

BIOGRAPHY:  Nichole was born to prestigious parents in the San Francisco area.  Nichole was raised by a nanny and grew up with little want or desire, other than her parent’s attention.  Being as successful as her parents were, meant they spent most of their time in meetings which more often than not occurred in other cities, or even abroad.  From the time she could walk, it seemed that Nichole was doing something to gain her parent’s attention.  When she was younger, her stunts were considered cute, creative, or even daring.  As she grew older, and it became more difficult to impress her parents or even gain a second of their time, her actions were considered rebellious.

When Nichole reached school-age, her parents sent her away to an all girl preparatory school in Northern California.  It was there that Nichole began to explore her wide scope of interests.  She was encouraged to join the soccer team, sing in a choir, and participate in the theater club.  Naturally athletic, Nichole fell in love with soccer.  She enjoyed singing and playing music, but was not considered “gifted”, and while she would have killed to earn the lead in a school play, she typically earned the spot of understudy and helped with the set and costumes, where she found that she was a fairly gifted artist.  Despite all of her activities, her parents never attended a game, saw a play, or heard her sing.

When Nichole discovered that she was accepted into Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson High School, she was ecstatic.  She was excited to finally attend a mixed gender school.  She was disappointed when she didn’t make the Varsity soccer team her freshman year, but played on the Junior Varsity team and made several good friendships.  She also sang in the freshman female choir, and signed on to help the theater program with sets, costumes, and makeup.  Her grades her freshman year were excellent, receiving As and one B.

Her sophomore year was more of a struggle as her home life was turned upside down when her parents filed for divorce.  While she made the varsity team, she didn’t start and only played in four games all season.  She felt even worse about herself when her parents decided to begin attending her games, which was a thinly veiled attempt to gain her favor.  Her natural attention seeking behavior was only encouraged by two parents who decided to fight over her.  Her father bought her a car on her sixteenth birthday, and to top that, her mother took her to Mulan for spring break.  Her grades dipped to all Bs with only a single A.

Her junior year, She found a boyfriend and began to party.  She became much more focused on what was “cool”.  Nichole refused to participate in choir, skirted her responsibilities to the theater program, and later that year, her grades prevented her from participating in soccer.  In October, she crashed her car and received an under aged drinking ticket.  Then, she began failing classes.  It was through the intervention of her guidance councilor, and several teachers, that prevented her from failing out of school.  With their help, she ended her relationship with the boyfriend, who was obviously a bad influence, and was able to recover her grades.  She ended the school year with a 2.9.

By the beginning of her senior year, her friends on the soccer team and theater program forgave her, as did the teachers, or at least, that’s how it seemed.  She joined the senior mixed choir, returned to her responsibilities with the theater program, and continued the tutoring sessions her teachers had setup the year before.  She still attends parties, but remains fairly mellow.  She’s still a bit of class clown, despite the fact that her teachers keep a sharp eye on her.

Posting prompt #1

Nichole was focusing on her breathing.  Deep, slow breathes.  In and out.  In and out.  Honey brown colored eyes watched the teacher, at the head of the classroom, pass out the answer forms and then the test booklets.  She promptly wrote her name on the top of the booklet and in the designated place on the answer form.  The last thing she needed was to forget and receive no credit at all.  Though, she needed an A to even pass the class.  She then positioned her test booklet on her left, and the answer form directly beside it and in front of her.  Her gaze drifted back to the front of the classroom and to her teacher who waited for them expectantly.  She chewed on her bottom lip nervously as she waited for permission to begin.

When asked if there were any questions, Nichole raised her hand.  ”This is open book, right?” she asked with a smile.

The teacher simply responded with a straight face.  Nichole knew the answer before the teacher spoke, but it never hurt to ask.  Some instructors were softies and had allowed such things in the past.  Of course, it was never this teacher and it was highly unlikely for this class.  Still, her question had received a few nervous snickers from her classmates, an added bonus.  She shot a smile to the boy to her left who had begun to chuckle before he stopped himself.  Nichole inhaled deeply once more, before exhaling it after a few seconds.

Upon the teacher’s “you many now begin”, Nichole turned opened her text booklet to the first question and began to read.  She underlined the key words in the question, and quickly eliminated the answers for A and C.  She then reread the question and the two remaining answers.  C’mon, what was said in the study group?  We went over this.  The QRS interval looks normal, but the T-wave is prolonged.  I don’t even see a P-wave. Nichole was fairly certain the correct answer was B and she shaded in the oval correlating to her choice on her answer form.  The next four questions were relatively easy.  The sixth question, however, she was uncertain about.  She filled in the oval for C, then erased and shaded the oval for A.  Her teeth clamped down on her lower lip and she worked the problem over in her head as her pencil wrote in the air.  Her eyes floated toward the ceiling and a long frustrated sigh escaped her lips.  Not knowing the answer, she put a star next to the question on her test booklet and moved on to the next question.

Forty-five minutes later, Nichole wasn’t feeling very confident that she was going to pass this test, though she was answering the test’s last question.  She turned back to the front of the booklet and began checking to make sure she bubbled in the oval she had intended.  She came to her first starred question and reread it.  Wait!  There had been another question asking the same thing.  She flipped through her booklet to find the question.  There.  Number thirty-three, it basically answered question six for her.  Nichole quickly flipped the booklet back to question six, erased her previous answer and filled in the correct oval.  Well, that was at least one question she would get right.

The other questions she had placed a star next to weren’t as easy, but she was able to look at them closer and with more time.  She realized she had read one of the questions wrong, the first time through, and made the correction.  The other star questions she had no better idea than what she had originally marked.  She counted the starred questions.  Five.  If she missed all of those and nothing else she would have her much needed A.  Her eyes looked up to scan the classroom.  Most of the other students had already turned in their tests.  Was she the last one to finish?  No, there were two other people taking the test still.  She exhaled slowly and looked back at her answer sheet.  It looked like she had shaded her answers in darkly and the erase marks weren’t horrible blotches that might cause the machine to read her answer incorrectly.  Her name was on the booklet and her answer sheet.  Another deep inhale and exhale.  There wasn’t anything else she could do.  Hopefully her studying with her tutor and the study groups would pay off.

Nichole slowly stood and several faces of her classmates turning to find the sound of the noise.  The teacher watched her approach, and when she grew close enough, he whispered instructions.  She followed them, placing her answer sheet and the booklet in two different stacks, and then quietly returned to her desk.

2nd writing prompt

October rolled around and that meant there were two things up and coming, Halloween parties and the annual school ski trip.  Nichole was obviously going.  She had made it every year, since her sophomore year.  Of course, she had a boyfriend last year, which meant that she spent less time on the slopes than she had the previous year.  This year, she figured she’d find someone to hook up with, maybe when the beer and alcohol go to the hot tubs or, otherwise, one of the many parties.  There would be plenty of opportunities.

She remembered the truth and dare game she’d participated in the year before.  One of the dares she had completed was to streak into the snow.  She remembered leaving the toasty confines of the cabin had been the worst part of it.  Maybe this year she would skip the truth and dare games.  Nah, who was she kidding?  She would do it, especially if people asked her to.  It was one of the most enjoyable things to do with your clothes on.

Nichole pulled her phone from the back pocket of her jeans, looked down the hallway to make sure there were no teachers, and then pulled up her calendar.  Her dad was home for the coming weekend.  Then he would be gone for the month.  Her mom had three days next week and, then, she too would be gone for the rest of the month.  The likelihood of catching either of her parents wasn’t very high.  It wouldn’t be the first time she’d forged her parent’s signatures.  So, if she didn’t get them, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal.  She even had their permission to forge the signatures, which meant if the principle asked them they would claim they had signed the permission slip, like they always did.

Nichole put her phone away and slowly walked to the auditorium where she was working on the backdrop of the set for the upcoming musical.  She’d actually gotten a small role, which she was excited about and she was in the chorus.  Her parents were both going to be out of town for opening night, but there was a possibility that they’d be there for the Saturday performance, though that depended upon their flights arriving on time, and there being no other delays.

Halfway to the auditorium, Nichole’s mind returned to the ski trip.  She would need to get her skis waxed and make sure the bindings were tight.  She needed a new outfit, too.  There was nothing wrong with what she wore the year before, except that she had worn it the year before.  Ski pants and a ski jacket and a new ski mask with a new beanie and scarf.  She didn’t know Copper Mountain as well as she knew Aspen or Breckenridge, but she knew enough of the trails that were typically in the “no ski” zones to be able to hang with the best skiers in school.  She would need her backpack and avalanche survival gear, just in case the worst happened while they were in the out of bounds areas.  Considering they were going early in the season, and it wasn’t likely there would be much of a snowpack, the chance for avalanches was low, but it was best to be prepared.  Besides, it would make her look like she was a hardcore skier which would only make the trip better.

Nichole entered the auditorium, ducked under the partially completed arc that two of the stage crew were erecting, and made her way to where her backdrop was.  She smiled and gave a finger wave to the rest of the crew before kneeling by her artwork and pulling out her paints.  One of the freshmen asked her a question, and Nichole politely answered.  The girl was sweet, but a bit immature, in Nichole’s opinion.  The girl had blue ducks on her backpack after all.  Why a high schooler would have a duck on her backpack was beyond Nichole’s understanding, and she didn’t exactly spend any extra time trying to figure it out.

Honey brown eyes were drawn to one of the cuter actors and she smiled at him before tucking her brown hair behind her ear.

”Hey, you’re going on the ski trip this year, right?” Nichole asked.

He had gone the year before.  In fact, if her memory served her, he had been one of the people who had played truth or dare.  It was a fairly safe assumption he’d be going again this year.

When he stopped and replied with an affirmative, Nichole’s smile widened.  ”I need to get my skis waxed.  Wanna come with?”  The boy shrugged and then said sure.  Score!  Maybe he wouldn’t mind giving her his input on a new ski outfit.  Something he thought was cute and that would help her stick out on the slope, so that he could find her easier.  ”How about tomorrow?” Nichole asked, and he once again said sure.  Double score!

Nichole pulled out her phone and sent her dad a text.  Need $$$ 4 ski trip!!  Then put her phone away and began painting.  A half hour later, her phone beeped and when she looked at it the screen displayed her bank account with a hefty deposit from her father.  She sent a new text, Thnx.  Luv ya!  She would call him later, to see how his business trip was going.  The phone call would be short, they always were, but she would show she appreciated the money, and him.

Now, she needed to focus on the set.  She would die of embarrassment if Mr. Valentine made a scene because he didn’t approve of what she was doing.

Thank you everybody for your applications, and we will get back to you once we've had a little chat :)
Vergil's Faceclaim Archive; For All Your Character Model Seeking Needs!

If there is still room for applicants, I would like to give this go. I am thinking about a student government type character, maybe even president of the student council. There are a lot of applications, though, so I will not write it up unless you are still accepting.

Just because there are a lot of applications doesn't mean you don't have a chance...you just need to make sure to wow us enough that we consider you over them :P If you want to write up a concept bio, go ahead and we'll consider everybody fairly. It isn't a first come first served deal :)

Awesome! I can't wait to hear any criticisms you all might hav  :-)

A couple of things. We've been getting great character proposals and truly appreciate the effort everyone's putting into their characters. With that in mind, I'm leaving this thread 'Open' through Friday Night for folks to have time to finish up any proposals they're working on and submit them for consideratation. Over the weekend through Monday we'll be working with you here and I see us making a decision on who's moving onto the next stage of things on Tuesday at the latest. As an FYI the next stage involves clarification of powers and integrating the approved characters into the game, meaning hashing out connections with other characters and finalizing bios and reputations and such.

*phews*

Only thought it was fair to give everyone a heads up.

Now onto a bit of feedback:
@ Juggtacular - I like the edits to the bio and Flaw, nicely done. Thanks for answering the questions posed to you, and here are couple more for you:

  • How often does he throw parties?
  • How does he both excel in classroom and at sports?

@ Sephora - Maya is a very interesting character, love the writing sample and the fact that she's an uber-jock, including the poor grades. Koodos on a flaw that will spark RP, as a lot of characters can be tasked to help your character/help her slack off. Re: Power choice, I'm ok with a power copycat but would rather not see someone who 'takes away' another person's powers... It'd make her a buzz kill to play with super-wise... NOT to tell you what power to take but a 6' tall, faster as the wind weather manipulator would be kind of cool... Especially since it would draw her 'out of type' as it's not a physical power in any way... But there's lots of places you could take her.

@ JamesSureWould - There's a lot of fun to be had in Cameron. Yay! Theatre geeks! I like how you wove the flaw into the writing sample and his power sounds fun too (Why hire a cast of thousands when you have me?) I do need you to think about how the OCD will spark RP... I see it as a fine Personality quirk, but the purpose of the Flaw is to open up RP with other characters... I'd be happy to be proven 'wrong' so share your thoughts on that, or think of some other part of him to highlight for this

@Batman4560 - Ryan has potential and is nicely written, but I have the same concern about his Flaw(s) as I do for Cameron. They're all cool for character depth and 'color' but I am not sure how they'll help start RP with others and they're all over the map. Could you focus on one thing and draw it out, meaning talk about how it would help serve to engage others in RP with him?

@AribethAmkiir - Nichole's proposal was really well written. I was going to ask you about the flaw but you expanded on it nicely in your bio and I really liked your writing sample. I would like to ask you to 'pick a type' to focus on... Girl Next Door feels like her 'look' and attitude (maybe - very approachable and likable, etc) so highlighting her Artsy-ness would be AWESOME and spark a lot of RP.

@Birchleaf - Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for the Class President, it's very much a role I'd like to see filled by a player :)

Hmm, I'll admit, I hadn't considered it from the angle of "opening up rp". I more just made something that I thought would make Cameron's life interesting.

But I think it can still work. After all, Cameron probably often brings in other people into his constant practising. I mean, he needs somebody else to look and make sure he's not practicing it the wrong way.
That, and his reputation as a perfectionist would probably make other people seek him out in certain circumstances.  After all, who's better to have a partner for your project than the guy who will probably spend hours making sure it's just right. So long as you keep an eye on him and make sure he has it ready on time, he's the perfect partner.

I don't think I quite understand what you're suggesting. Typically, well-rounded characters aren't a stereotype.  Not sure if the "type" is supposed to be the cliques they fall into or an actual "type", since being required to be a "type" seems like it forces a character to be one dimensional.  I thought her artistic side was something the game didn't have, yet, but it isn't my intention to have that solely define her.  Is that what you're suggesting?  As I said, I'm not sure what you're asking.  I had trouble picking a type, because she doesn't cleanly fit into a single stereotype, and my hope is that none of the characters do.

assleigh

Sorry to be confusing... This isn't really any kind of constraint, it's more 'if I were to walk into the school and looked around, which clique would she belong to?' thing... Or put another way, since all the characters have been in school together for atleast a year, 'if I don't really know <character X> I'd know he/she is a <fill in Type>'

I'd say except for 'teacher' none of the characters are 'one thing' but it helps with first impressions/preconceptions.

I didn't mean to make it sound so 'important', it's just a part of keeping things in the High School feel... And honestly just tells me where to 'place' your character in a list that's part of the 2nd stage of the approval process :)

I think what Assh means is that choose the "type" that people would usually label her. Take one of my characters, Dante; he's not your stereotypical rich kid or popular kid - in fact, I would argue that he isn't popular - but since he's the boyfriend and the brother of a couple of "popular" kids, that's who he tends to hang out with...which means that's what people usually label him if pressed, because that's who he spends time with. :-) It isn't a specific archetype to work with, it's more of a label that others would give her. It's not extremely important, it's more of an ease of classification sort of thing. You don't need to be at all stereotypical :-) Also, if she's from a moderately wealthy family, how does that factor into being the Girl Next Door? My impression was that the Girl Next Door was just an average but good looking girl....I might be wrong, though, haha. That isn't me being snarky, it's an honest question :-)

@Jamessurewould:
Mmm, I still agree with Assh in that it's a bit of a "weak" RP hook. The flaw is meant to give people ways to get involved. He can be OCD, but I think it would be easier for you as a player to come up with a more...I don't know, hookable flaw? :-)

AribethAmkiir

I think, largely as part of her flaw, she would try to make sure she fit in with the popular kids.

I see her as one of those kids that fits in with a number of cliques, but doesn't define herself with any of them.

If she had to choose, she would claim she belonged to the most socially accepted clique that was.

Considering what we've been told about the school, it's possible that belonging to the theater program is a bigger deal than being an athlete.

Does that help at all?  Can you give me any more info on the setting that might help me understand what the most important thing in the school is?

@ Vergil Tanner:  Since this school seems to be "elite" already, I don't see a lot of people coming from inner city, poor or impoverished backgrounds.  I assume that most of the students come from upper middle-class or better.  As ash suggested, "Girl Next Door" is more an attitude and appearance than anything.  She doesn't believe she's the best at anything.  She doesn't believe that her family is better than other people's.  To me, "Girl Next Door" means that she is humble and grounded enough to fit in with almost anyone.  This isn't likely 100% accurate, but it was the closest descriptor I could think of to describe the character.

Vergil Tanner

I don't think there's a "most important thing," since we haven't reeeeaaally fleshed out the school that much, but I would imagine that American Football would be a big deal, and given how big the theatre production is, theatre would be a big deal as well, though not as big as the AF. The fact that they have an Olympic gold medallist as a fencing coach might also make them keen to make fencing their forte :-)

I don't think the school is "elite," since we've actually chatted amongst us and decided that we have too many wealthy people for a supposedly average school, haha. I think it's probably in a middle/upper-middle class area, but since it's a public school, anybody can get in if they have the grades. It was just a question to see what you think of as a girl next door, and considering the likely well-to-do area the school is in, you answered beautifully :-) Thank you :-)

On the note of her flaw, are you suggesting that she has a minor inferiority complex? That could certainly prove interesting, if that is indeed what you're hinting at :P

Quote...It has a world famous STEM program that feeds int Caltech and a theater program that has graduated more then it's fair share of stars. It's faculty are all thought leaders in their field of expertise and hail from all corners of the globe. More students graduate and go to top colleges and unversities then any other high school in the area...

This segment is why I called the school "elite".  It's the best school in the area, and knowing how public education is, I'd assume that it is one of the best in the state and probably nationally ranked.  The bit about the financial aid rewards made me think it was a private school with tuition, though rereading it I see that was in reference to colleges.

In my opinion, unless the school hosts a sport's team that has won numerous state championships, it would seem the theater program is one of the school's claims to fame.  In Texas, and other southern states, the sport would have to be football.  In California, the sport could be whatever ash or the group wanted.  As you said, the big "sport" could be fencing.  Though, considering the theater program has graduated "numerous stars", and those stars are likely to assist the program and school as alumni, I would assume the theater program is larger than football, basketball, and every other sport at the high school combined, (unless they have a team that has won numerous state championships) especially if the majority of students come from affluent families.

Vergil Tanner

Welp, colour me mistaken. It's been a while since I read the information since...well, I already have a character so I didn't need to :P In that case, wealth makes sense, haha.

And I think it was hinted that the football team had won some championships, but nothing specific has yet been stated, so it would make sense that fencing and theatre were the biggies. Really, we're in kind of a state where nothing specific has been nailed down about the various sports, haha. That's up to our Lord and Mistress Assh. :P

Minor, possibly.  I'm not sure it's any greater than your average teenager.  It's my opinion that most teenagers have some feelings of inferiority in regards to certain things.  I'm not so sure that it is an inferiority complex as much as it is a self-image thing, or even self-esteem problems.

@ash: okay.  Sorry, didn't mean to be difficult.  I might have a better feel about her "type" after talking to the other players and deciding upon her "reputation".  Type, here, seems like it's much more of how other people would define or describe the character and not necessarily how the character would describe themselves.

@Arabeth: True, true...although in order to be a flaw in the sense we're using the word - as an RP hook - we might need to brainstorm and come up with an additional facet that gives her some automatic and easy "ins" when it comes to interacting with other characters. :)

@James: Well, what we meant by that and what it gets taken to mean may be different things, but I think what we meant was that it be fun and interesting to roleplay and giving an in.
In regards to your other ideas, I would stay away from Nymphomania. It's actually an incredibly serious disorder and is extremely difficult to RP in a sympathetic manner. I know what you mean by it - he's just mildly addicted to sex - but I would avoid labelling it Nymphomania just to avoid possibly causing some offence where it wasn't meant. Besides that...so long as you don't mind your character probably being slapped for inappropriate comments, having a self-professed ladiesman running around could be amusing, especially if it's only in his own head and the girls kinda look at him like "Oh no, not him again." :P

CHARACTER SHEET
FLAW: (something critical to your character like 'Exposure to X will kill me', 'Must ingest Y to live', 'Can't break a promise', 'Painfully Shy', etc. Make it fun)

N.B. The Flaw is not something to 'balance' powers, it's a personality quirk, cherished habit, dolorous responsibility, deeply held fetish that can spark RP. So going to Comic Books, Spiderman's need to hold down a job but is always late due to heroing = Flaw, him running out of webbing, not a flaw, it's a power balancer.

I will make it stand out more, but it's in there in the code I expected people to use on their proposals. A big part of making a character to be part of the game is to have LOTS of things other players can use as reasons to interact with your character. It keeps people from sitting around, twiddling their proverbial thumbs waiting for people to randomly come over an play with them.

Shameless flirt is good... So long as the character doesn't stop being a flirt should he get a serious girlfriend... But unless he's Bi/will flirt with other guys girlriends infront of them, it won't help him RP with dudes... But honestly, a ballsy, pathological flirt could be fun... It allows the character to be manipulated by groups of people.  She's easily influenced into doing things she wouldn't necessarily do on her own.  She's nearly incapable of standing up to peer pressure on her own.  Due to this flaw, she'll continue to associate with people who treat her poorly.  This alone, could allow characters to decide to take advantage of her or try to open her eyes to reality.  If left in a room with nothing but strangers, she'll be the one trying to initiate conversation and interaction until she finds someone who seems to accept her.  "It's Friday night after the big game.  Let's have a party.  Where at?  Nichole's parents are gone, if we all ask she'll let us do it there".

Not sure if these were the RP hooks you wanted or were asking for, but I'm not exactly sure how it's worse than some of the other examples given.

Help?

We should move this over to OOC... But... Good to know... Cause sometimes she'd want the 'wrong' to be present for him...

Candii to Dante: "Daddy... I've been bad..." said in a too cutesy voice while biting the tip of her finger and shifting her weight from the balls of one foot to the other all 'nervous', coy and with a 'got caught with her hand in the cookie jar' vibe...

@AribethAmkiir - Totally get it and love it, its fine for now and can be refined in Stage 2 :)

Haha, I think the above quote from Assh kinda sums it up, eh? ;-) But anyway, an OCD Flirt who may or may not be as appealing as he thinks? That could be interesting. If he decides he wants to flirt with Grace or Candii, I imagine Dante wouldn't be best pleased. They may enjoy an open relationship, but that doesn't mean he relishes the idea of her flirting with other people :P But that discussion is one for later :P

And thanks Pally. Now all I can imagine is Candii calling Alex daddy. Thanks for that. -.-

Why do I suddenly have a horrible feeling you're thinking of having Candii call Dante daddy? That would be extremely uncomfortable for him. :P

I am confused and intrigued by these refrences

Vergil Tanner

....it's wrong that I find that mental image so hot, isn't it? And I have a feeling that Dante would certainly have mixed feelings about that. But yes! Move to the OOC! :P

@Aribeth: Yhup, agree with Assh. That sounds brilliant to me :-) I just wanted some expansion on how that would influence her actions, and it seems cool to me. Once applications close, we'll see who goes through to Stage 2 and then further refinement can be made there :-)

@James: To clarify:

Valentine is one of the teachers at the school, the school therapist, head of the theatre productions and the fencing team...and a high functioning sociopath.
Candii is part of the theatre club and the fencing team, and is a straight A student. She also has a crush on Valentine, but also a kind of father/daughter mentor relationship, particularly after her own father passed away.
Dante is her boyfriend, and whilst they aren't exclusive (though they have agreed that each of them always has first dibs on the other), he distrusts Valentine immensely since he feels like there is something "off" about him.

Clear things up? :-)

It's all references to the relationship between Candii and Mr. Valentine, English Teacher, Fencing team coach and Theatre group advisor, as well as the relationship between Candii and Dante... We decided that as a couple they were known as Cante, right, Vergil?

Oh, and if anyone's interested in an Adult character, Candii's mom (A widowed Lutheran minister in the beginnings of a relationship with Mr. Valentine) is up for grabs... PM me first to discuss

The next stage of character creation will fill in a lot of these gaps in knowledge, James, as it's about getting to know the other characters and players as you work with them to establish your character in the school :) It's also when folks tend to come up with initial plot ideas for their characters and we suggest stuff as well... It's collaborative, whacky fun (I'll be doing the whacking, sir)

Yhup, that's right, though Dante hates that pet name. It's made even more galling by the fact that Grace was the one who started calling them it :P

But yeah, don't worry about it James. Once all the initial kinks are worked out, we can progress to Phase 2 and we'll let everybody else in the RP have a piece of your bio. No bio survives contact with Assleighs Hounds. :P
I make that sound worse than it is, haha. Don't worry about it, it's just things like expansions, clarifications and alterations to make the character fit into the RP and the social dynamic as a whole. After that, you work on character relationships, and then you're good to go. This is assuming, of course, you get through. I believe we have a cap on how many people we're accepting, after all :P

Ah, perhaps you may have missed this on the first post of the thread, but WCBH is a reboot with existing characters. All of the existing characters have already established relationships and connections with one another (which you naturally haven't seen yet). So as Assleigh said, you guys will go through the same process of becoming a part of the school, so no worries there. These gaps in knowledge will be filled when you meet our crazy cast. ^_^

And also, Vergil, that is super hot, damn it. Dante is so damn lucky. xD

And yes, Assleigh does all the whacking around here. Mistress + Goddess + GM = Assleigh

Keep an eye on the thread, some of the players aren't around atm so may have well wishes or questions for folks. I also may alter the timeline depending on feedback I get from the players and as we've only got one other person who's expressed an interest in submitting a proposal I might close things after Birchleaf posts a profile to move things along 'quicker' for all the folks who have done their bit and submitted a profile for our review.

Also, do you have any questions for us?

And... I realized... If anyone wants to join the fencing team I'd be uber happy to have someone on there ICly with Candii and Mr. Valentine...

Is it possible to look at the approved character's sheets?

When you mentioned help with world building, in the first post, it sounded like you were looking for gangs, bullies, etc.  Are you only looking for antagonists or are you looking for more setting pieces, as well, such as details of the school?

There was mention earlier that Prom was going to happen a week after the ski trip?  Is the game taking place toward the end of the school year?  If we're playing a senior who graduates, where do things go from there?  If we're near the end of the school year, is the majority of the game going to happen during the summer?

assleigh

I'm hesitant to post the link because I can't lock the thread and in the past people have jumped the gun and posted there... But... I'm going to take off my GM's gauntlets of being a control freak and post it here

Just for review, PLEASE do not post in the thread until you've gotten a PM from me saying you're approved...
It'll make me VERY unhappy... And no one wants to see that, right?

Approved Characters

Be aware that unless specifically agreed upon by the player who owns the character, none of what can reasonably construed as a 'secret' that you read in the thread is IC knowledge. We share a lot about characters so that as writers we can better collaborate, as characters, knowledge is necessarily limited.

RE: World Building - Actually... Anything is cool... First and foremost, I look at people's bios and reputation and interests to see if things can be added into the 'world'... I just got a great suggestion from PoL and I may be acting on it soon... Once that's settled, I'll post about it. If you've got a great idea for a gang/antagonist/lunchroom lady/whatever, propose it... And also indicate if it's something you want NPCed, is background color, etc.

BTW, not all characters have to play nice... Characters can be bullies (look at AC) and even 'Villains' ...whatever you desire/makes sense for your character's growth. A lot of the tension and conflict in the game will come from the characters themselves... And their interaction with others...

Prom was a misnomer... We're in late fall now... He was referencing the School Formal... That started as an off the cuff remark but is now the 2nd 'big event' coming up... And it'll be the first time as a supers they'll come together. So I'm seeing this as a whole 'school year'... But I don't think we'll get to graduation for quite some time...

The next set of questions for Dontae

How often does he throw parties? - He's thrown quite a few. But he's not the only person at the school to throw a party so I'd say often enough that people would be looking forward to one when he announces it, but not often enough that people would ask around if he's having another one soon, or be bored when he does have one. That might be hard to translate into a real number...maybe one a month or every few weeks? And then after big games and other occasions like that if someone else isn't having one?

How does he both excel in classroom and at sports? - He excels in sports without question. He's a sports guy and that's what he's pretty much built for. He's good in school, but that's not from like natural genius or anything. Just being a smart kid with common sense and the common to study. Despite being rich his parents still want him to make good grades and have no problem punishing him if he fucks up...his mom is Japanese after all, lol. And his dad came from nothing pretty much and got lucky because he was good at sports. He wants him to have more to fall back on than their money. I'd say he stays around a high B/Low A, like possibly 3.5 GPA. And since he does play sports, he'd have to keep his grades at a decent level to just be allowed to compete.

CHARACTER SHEET

NAME: Matthew Aaron George Edwards

AGE: 17

SEX: Male

APPEARANCE: (I could not find a picture that looked close enough to what I wanted, so I am going with the prose description. I reserve the right to add a photograph if I find one of a handsome enough albino.)
Matthew is not particularly tall, in fact, he is slightly shorter than average at 5'6". Because he has albinism, he has milky white skin, colourless hair, and extremely pale blue eyes that appear almost red in the right light. Despite his strange looks, he is quite handsome in a slender, scholarly way, with sharp well-defined features and elegant mannerisms. Has incredibly good vision, but very weak eyes and frequently uses glasses to bear some of the load.

ORIENTATION: Straight

RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Single

TYPE: Student Government

POWER THEME: Wizardry/Weak Cyrokinesis

FLAW: Unable to lie. Unable to break promises. Albino skin makes the sun very painful. Deeply buried inferiority complex. Falls apart if he fails in anything, with 'failure' being defined as 'second place', so has frequent private breakdowns where no one can see him.

REPUTATION:  Pending rewrite - Well known throughout school and fairly liked, but seen as a rather stiff, stoic, humourless, goody-two shoes killjoy. This is not the whole picture.

BIOGRAPHY: Senator Edwards, like his father before him, was a political crusader. Championing a variety of causes, some of them more popular than others, he made himself a great many enemies. Ten years ago, he was assassinated, leaving his wife widowed and eight year old Matthew fatherless. Some suspected that a mobster had put out a hit on him, but despite a nationwide manhunt, no suspects were found and eventually the case went cold.

Abigail Edwards remarried less than a year after her famous husband's death, mostly because the Edwards fortune had vanished along with him, leaving them destitute. Her new, much older husband, Reverend John Sanders, was a quiet man of very modest means but quite respectable. They soon had a daughter, Alexandra Sanders.

Matthew barely remembers his real father, but he has always tried to live up to his legacy. Now in his Senior year of high school, he is trying to follow in his father's footsteps by running for positions of leadership within the student body. True to his family, he is well known for his utter lack of tolerance for any sort of corruption or rule-breaking, and occasionally antagonizes those he considers disruptive influences. Very confident, self-assured, and almost arrogant on the surface, deep underneath his stoic exterior he suffers from constant feelings of inferiority, due both to his family's current destitute state and a nagging fear that he will be unable to live up to his family name.

In addition to student government work, Matthew is a member of the fencing, archery, choral, and dancing clubs. One of the top students, he frequently falls into despair if he begins to think that another might be valedictorian instead of him.

Writing Prompt

Matthew looked over the stack of fliers. "Thank you, Ms. Peters, you have done an exemplary job as always. I am in your debt. If you will take the west side, I will take the east side." Election day was coming up, and Matthew was determined to crush his opposition. As always, Cornelia Peters was there to help him. Once he won, she would be an exemplary secretary.

Cornelia Peters nodded. "Then I will take the west side of the school. Anything to get the better candidate elected!" Matthew could not help but notice how beautiful she looked in that blue summer dress. It complemented her eyes so well... Perhaps this was as good of a time as any. After all, she had been there for him so long, he really could not do without her.

Calming his heartbeat and taking off his reading glasses, Matthew stared nervously at the tabletop. He had been planning this for two weeks, but had put of the asking for fear of what might happen. "Ms. Pe- I mean, Cornelia." He began with great trepidation.

Cornelia paused at the door and turned around. "Matthew? What is wrong? You never call anyone by their first name. Are you sick?" Her voice showed her concern.

Matthew shifted nervously. "It is just that you have been so helpful to me for so long, I just wanted to thank you by taking you out to eat. Just the two of us."

Cornelia turned almost as white as Matthew, then blushed heavily. "Matthew Edwards, are you asking me on a date?" Matthew nodded nervously. She laughed, a relieved, regretful laugh. "I flirted with you so much for so long, but no reaction at all from you. I have been waiting for you to ask me out since middle school! I was half-convinced you were gay."

Matthew looked confused. "What? I am not... What? All this time... So will you go out with me?" His tone showed barely constrained hopeful joy.

Cornelia sighed deeply and dropped her head. "I am so sorry. One month ago I started dating Percy, and..."

"So no then." Matthew hung his head. After a moment he stood up and grabbed the stack of fliers. "I will take the east side if you take the west, Ms. Peters." His voice was cold and emotionless.

"Hold on, I did not say no!" Cordelia interrupted.

Feeling more than a bit confused, Matthew paused in his stride and turned around. "But you already have a boyfriend. Percival Davidson is an upstanding young man."

"That may be, but he is not my husband or my fiancee. If I want to break up with him for you, then that is my business."

"I cannot ask you to..." Matthew paused. He did not know how to proceed. On one hand, he desperately wanted to try to make the relationship work, but on the other hand, he had very strong opinions on cheating, whether on tests or romantic interests. Still, her words did ring true... "How about we go on one date, and see where things develop from there?"

Cordelia smiled. "That seems reasonable. But you are going to have to be a bit less formal with me."

Percival bowed and smiled. "Of course, milady."

The evening of the date came soon enough. Percival rented a car, his was a junkyard reject infamous around school for how ugly it was, and picked up Cordelia at 6:30. From there they went to an expensive Japanese restaurant and then to a classical music concert. Throughout the evening Matthew felt nervous, but not so much as to impair his enjoyment. Unfortunately, Cordelia seemed a bit strained as well, though Matthew could not quite identify the cause.

The parted with only their usual farewell that night. Maybe there would be another date, but probably not. That one had cost him two months worth of his meager income. But more than that, Matthew was not sure if he was ready for a relationship, if he could open up enough let someone else in. Full of uncertainty, he drove off into the night.

Ski Free (Don't get eaten by a yeti)
Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide
Matthew took another look at the itinerary. "I am not certain that I should be going on this... excursion. Perhaps I would be more useful at school and attending to my normal duties."

Cornelia sighed. "Look, the rest of the student council is going, and plan on having an important meeting there. You cannot skip that, or duck out of your responsibilities." Matthew was silent. He began to open his mouth, when Cornelia shushed him. "I know you are worried about the money, since your parents cannot afford to send you and you are bankrupt after our..." a hint of red appeared on her cheeks, "... date." She sighed deeply. "I am sad that that did not work out, so let me offer to pay your way. You know I have the money. If it makes you feel better, I can put the money into the treasury and then say that it was a gift from the student council for all your hard work."

Matthew wanted to argue the point, but after a few minutes of hemming and hawwing, he decided that it would be very rude to refuse a gift given so insistently. Pity Percival Davidson was going too. Sure, Percival was a great guy, but Matthew could not help but feel jealous of him every time he saw him now. At any rate, Cornelia was right. Like most of the families around here, her's was wealthy enough to pay one or two trips of that size without noticing, whereas he only had the money from the part time jobs he could get as an underage student.

His feelings towards the trip itself were quite ambivalent. On the one hand, lots of immoral behavior and rule-breaking went on, and he was regretfully unalbe to do much more than lecture those involved. His position did not carry a quarter of the power that it would in a Japanese school... On the other hand, he really enjoyed the cold and the snow. He had always felt a special affinity for winter. But, with the payment out of the way. He would have to get permission from his mother and step-father.

"Mother, father, I have a request: will you allow my permission to go on the annual school trip to the Copper Ski Resort? The student council is having a meeting there, not to mention the fact that I would really enjoy the skiing itself. The student council, mostly the secretary, has offered to pay my fees so that I can attend the meeting with the others. I know that the trip has a scandalous reputation, but I will strive to not shame the family name regardless of my current location or  timezone."

The dinner table went silent for a few seconds. "Of course you can go." Rev. Sanders said mildly. "We trust you to stay out of trouble."

Well, that was easier than expected.

Now all that was needed was to pack everything. His mother was insistent that he have a new coat to make him feel 'nice and toasty' but Matthew felt that was not truly necessary. The cold did not bother him. It never had. The sun bothered him though, and so he had to pack a bunch of SPF 50 to keep his melanin free skin from developing rather nasty problems, winter or not.

Packing was a quick event: personal hygiene supplies, four changes of clothes, winter gear courtesy of his mother, laptop, papers, and sunglasses. Snow glare on his sensitive eyes could be murder.

In reference to the conversation about sports:  If my character get's approved I would like to create a background where her siblings were all amazingly skilled athletes who helped the school win trophy after trophy.  Is that alright?  I can manage without it.

Birchleaf, thanks for the proposal, it has promise and you clearly put one into it, so thank you. Before I go much further, I need you to rewrite the prompt because you missed an important nuance... It presumes you get date 1 and are shooting for going steady. Why? I'm a devious SOB looking to see a range of emotions, what your character would plan for the First Date with someone they care about and what it looks like to another 'person'. Also, I wanted to see reactions to another when that person has power over them and their happiness. Sorry if this comes off as me being a bitch, but my madness has a method :)

for your convenience here's the prompt:

2. It's D-day.

I'm good with the power selection, just remember it's rudimentary Weather Manipulation so you're not at Thor/Storm levels yet. Also *giggles* expect a few... Complications... As you learn to use that power :) Ofcourse that is true for everybody.

I am completely on board with the rudimentary weather powers.  Do you think she'd be able to make it rain early on though?  I'm just asking for it because I am loving the idea that when Maya is taking a test there will always be the saddest rainstorm in the world going on outside, and the test anxiety makes her control a little 'bumpy'.

I will totally start working in basic backrounds for her older siblings now, and I was already anticipating Maya being known as X's sister. She has quite the complex about it.

Ah, I am sorry about that. I will rewrite (read, add to the selection) immediately. I hope that it does not matter too much that the prompt is much longer than a mere three paragraphs; I sort of get carried away on these stand-alone things sometimes. Anyway, I will add the 'date' to what I already have.

It will not be a typical date, more of a morose what-could-have-been affair, but it will explore the themes that you mentioned (the going steady is a sort of half thing, where both people want it but both feel as if it is impossible). I hope that is satisfactory: otherwise I will switch to the other prompt. I do not want Matthew to have a happy love life for various reasons.

So I created a basic profile for Maya's siblings.  I added to my character's biography, but I will post it here as well.

Maya's siblings and their accomplishments in order:
Michael: Age 28,  the only nonathletic member of the Morales clan, and their first college graduate.  Became a Doctor and is currently in Kenya working for Doctors without Borders.
Rosia: Age 25, fencing champion in high school. She got a full ride to college and became a nutritionist.
Valentina: Age 21, track star and pole vaulter in high school, as well as a lead in several school plays.  She is living with her husband in Los Angeles. She is trying to make a career for herself as an actress.
Luis:  Age 20, basketball and soccer champ in high school, dropped out of Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson to go to vocational school.  He is currently working as a mechanic at the Morales Auto Repair shop.

If anyone has any ideas about them that might spark some fun times, don't hesitate to speak up!

Juggtacular

Dontae is the schools star footballer/basketballer. And he is a sports fanatic, so he'd definitely know about Bruno. He'd probably be a hero of his on the defensive end which he enjoys just as much as running the ball. He could fanboy to her about her brother's stats and records or something once he finds out who she is, lol.

Sephora

Well if they have all been going to school together already, he probably already knows.  Maya undoubtably has a serious complex in regards to her siblings reputations, but she never makes an effort to hide her identity or her relation to them.

There. I have the situation edited a bit, though I am not sure if it is satisfactory yet. It is quite late and I am too tired to really think properly. Maybe I will have better ideas tomorrow.

That's cool with me. Maybe after a while he realizes how she doesn't like him bringing it up all the time.

And... I realized... If anyone wants to join the fencing team I'd be uber happy to have someone on there ICly with Candii and Mr. Valentine...

Hmm... cameron is already in the theater group, but I don't see why he couldn't be in both groups. It would be nice to give him some sort of combat training, no matter how small it might end up being. And besides, what self respecting flirtatious man doesn't know how to fence?

oh, I do have a question regarding the 'power level' of the game. How many duplicates could Cameron reasonably make? I mean, there's probably a limit to how many he can make and still have them be 'perfect copies'. Like, if he goes over the line, then the clones start to have quirks to them and the more he makes, the more extreme the 'quirk' is. But where is that limit? Can he only make 5 'perfect copies', or is the number closer to 20 or 30? Or somewhere in between?

EDIT: I also went back and added 'flirt' to Cameron's Flaws. I'll keep ocd, but I figured having two flaws can't hurt that badly

(In case anyone doesn't want to go back three pages to read the revision, here's the added section. Feel free to voice any criticisms or concerns)
"Flirt. His constant attempts to get into the pants of girls has left him with a few victories, a few sighs of pity, a few glares of contempt and a few angry boyfriends."

Okey dokey, everybody. We'll have a brief chat and get back to you all :) At the end of today - at least, the end of Assleigh's today - I believe we'll be closing applications and working with the ones we have. So...if there are any last minute applications, don't hesitate to post them, and for the rest of you, we'll get back to you ASAP. One thing I do want to say, though:

Juggs and Seph, we all love the fact you're already working out connections. Just thought I'd tell you that we're impressed that you're doing it off of your own back instead of having to be badgered about it :P

It's a low power game so at first, you can make at most 2 copies (1 perfect copy, at 2 copies Weirdness starts to happen to all 3 of them). Later on that can be expanded... But I never see you making more then 5 copies with, 2 perfect copies, without real strangeness happening (meaning for RP purposes with lots of lead up there can be 'more of you' but it'll cost you).

About your power... At what point, be it a # of copies/amount of time outside of you do your duplicates (especially the perfect copies) start to believe they're the 'real you'? If you think about it, you1 goes right... Bumps into Mr. Valentine finds out about that audition you just did and happiness ensues... You2 goes left, bumps into Dominic Duphane, Lacrosse team Captain whose girlfriend you'd been making out with at Dontae's last party, and he's looking for payback...and gets it... You1 and You2 are now living different lives... If You2 keeps having a bad day and You1 a good one... Those 'lives' and PoV and self concepts will become different pretty quickly... And would You1 really want You2's memories/history to bring him down?

Wow. Creepy. Leave it to Assh to invent an entire storyarc with one throwaway idea in her head :P

If it did not (I probably misunderstood something at some point if it did) then I will write the other prompt.
Yepyepyep... Definitely... I like the idea that she has greater control subconsciously then consciously. Say its raining and /that/ boy asks her out and she feels all glowee/happy... The clouds will clear and sun start shining 'near her' so over there it might still be raining but she feels all warm and radiantly happy... Now say it's been raining for days and her house's basement is flooding so she wants to stop the rain/make it move on... As a conscious act, that'd be very hard for her... So think she can do small things consciously but 'bigger effects' subsconsciously... I'd say she's consciously able to make adjustments... Sunny day... To cloudy... Then to rain... To a Thunderstorm... Then zap someone with lightning ...All of that would take a lot= of effort, but as she practices she could learn to affect her emotions to then do more... I'm probably babbling right now... But we'll talk about this more :)

On the note of the clones, seeing as they share memories, feelings, senses, etc, if I shot one of the clones, would the others feel it? If I shot two of them (but not killing them), wouldn't it be incredibly excruciating for all five of them? And along these lines, I like the idea of the hive mind being bombarded by multiple memories, sensations, feelings, etc. For something a little darker, because I can write some really dark stuff, what if one of the clones died? How would the hive mind and other clones feel to experience dying and death?

And yes, I'm sure I will have fun setting up Cameron's links to Alexander and Erika if you get through. I imagine if he's in both theater and fencing, both Candii and Alexander will see a lot of him. As far as relationships with other characters goes, Matthew is somewhat of a stern wannabe-authority figure, so he would likely have an antagonistic relationship with any rule breakers or delinquents. To the rest he would be a well-known, formal, but helpful figure. He is also in the fencing club, so he would know everyone involved with that quite a bit more than the others.

As for his powers, what I mean by "wizardry" is a Dr. Strange like character who gets his powers from study and deals with elemental or faerie spirits. Preparation and careful crafting is needed for all his abilities, but once everything is in place he is a formidable foe with a massive variety of options. If he is surprised though, he is barely more than a normal person since all his abilities are very slow to use. At least initially.

The cyromancy merely refers to the fact that ice magic is by far the easiest for him to use, and so he falls back on it whenever his other spells fail.

That actually was one of my ideas for 'weirdness'. If he develops too many clones, the hivemind that he and the clones have starts to break down slightly, and experiences start to affect them more than normal. So, with 1 clone, Cameron can maintain a reasonably sound hivemind and the clone is able to be kept grounded in the knowledge that he is a clone. But, the more clones there are, the less control Cameron is able to keep on the hivemind, and the clones start to gain their own experiences which don't quite jive with the idea of them being clones. At first it's just a suspicion and a minor personality difference, but with more time and more clones, one could get the outright delusion that he's the original Cameron.

QuoteI like it very much, thanks for taking the notes and running with them.o
Oh, it's no problem. I try to be open to critiques, and easy going enough.

Bah, that's a creepy thought... It would probably take cameron maintaining 5+ clones for an hour+ before one of the clones would straight up believe that he was the original. And it would probably take more time (Or more clones) before the quirks add up to the point where it decides to try and kill off the original Cameron. But still... Very possible. I mean, Cameron wouldn't start off knowing all these restrictions that the hivemind has.
As far as he knows, he can make Clones and he can experience what they experience. And that's all

Quote from: assleigh on May 02, 2014, 10:51:05 AMHehehe... Too much 'Locus of Identity' research for papers... Because even the Hive mind thing can add dimensions to things... I think he'd still probably use the 'I' pronoun for most things. Aftter all, as the controller of the hivemind, he's likely to be the most 'centered' of them; the one most aware that the clones aren't turly real people. But, if he needed to summon up 5+ duplicates for whatever reason, Don't be surprised if he starts saying "We want this" or "The Hivemind Demands..."
But yes, I love weirdness. PM away  ;D

How would the hive mind and other clones feel to experience dying and death?
Well, the way I was considering this was that 'the more clones, and the more traumatic the experiences, the more it feels like it actually happened to Cameron (or the clones)'.
And while the hivemind shares experiences, it isn't in the normal way. Essentially, it subconsciously buffers certain experiences in order to prevent problems. So touch, taste, and smell are experienced, but in a far off way; like you were experiencing it through a fog. Now (once he gets some experience) Cameron could turn off this restrictions, but it would open up a huge can of worms.

Anyway, if it's just one clone and Cameron, and the clone gets kicked in the nuts, he'd feel a twinge of pain, but nothing more than a strong breeze. But, the weaker the hivemind's connection, the less the buffer is. So, one clone dying, it would be like seeing bambi's mom dying; He's struck by sadness and a sense of tragedy, but He's able to internalize it enough and remember that the clone wasn't actually a real person. But, if Cameron had 5 clones up and one died, then it would closer to him having actually experienced death (Maybe only 20% off of the actual experience). Same for any other sense of pain or tragedy; the more clones, the closer it is to real for each member of the hivemind.

QuoteAnd yes, I'm sure I will have fun setting up Cameron's links to Alexander and Erika if you get through. I imagine if he's in both theater and fencing, both Candii and Alexander will see a lot of him. Vergil Tanner

Hmm....if you get through, Phase 2 is all about tweaking and tucking things like what your power can and can't do and the possible side effects, so we'll see if we get there. But I do think the Clones developing their own desires and goals depending on what situations they've been put into would naturally lead to them diverging. After all, if in an extreme scenario where one of them is off taking a test and the other one is asking that cute girl out and the original is sleeping in, naturally those first two will be like "Hey, I'm doing all the work! I should be the one in charge!" Something to consider, perhaps. :P But then, it's your character, and all this would be ironed out in Phase 2, if you get through. And of course, I'll be the one to say what we're all thinking: Clone Gangbang.

On the note of Candii, she and Dante have an "open" relationship, but I foresee Dante becoming less ok with that as the RP goes along. Perhaps some rivalry/tension between Cameron and Dante, if Dante sees him flirting with his girlfriend? Hmmm...possibilities, possibilities. But, I should probably stop there. Nothing has been decided as of yet, haha.

Why would it be a bad thing to show initiative (especially on the 'human' front') Honestly, one of the 'givens' of this group is one that is fun for the player to play who makes other characters cooler. Take AC... She's a character I created at a player's request for a paramour ... And at the same time she's so in your face she's all about starting stuff and not backing down... We've another writer going through the approval process who has become part of a love triangle featuring her which could lead to lots of development for all three characters.

SO skiddles and beers for you and Juggtacular :)

All I can say is, "YAY!!!!" big time "YAY!!!!" as that's EXACTLY the sort of thing evident in most approved characters. Sure, it's cool to have powers but how the powers effect their everyday lives and cause them trouble while encouraging them to grow is what this game is ALL about.

All good, just be aware that a wet blanket character rarely is much fun to play with long term... Not telling you 'no' just be sure that as you engage the delinquents you remember that Class President has less authority then a hall monitor or a crossing guard when confronting them.

So dial it WAY back and focus on Cryomancy and an effect or two he can accomplish and why he can do them... What did he find after the Event that lets him do/study magic ... Later, sure... Find more things to teach you magic, discover a ritual that lets you contact the Fae Court and petition for favors and such... Know they'll come with responsibilities and requirements that will be RPed out... Both the gaining of powers and relationships with spirits... So like any power there are learning curve and story arc components to growth

@JamesSureWould - I would like you to consider inverting the 'connectiveness' of the Hivemind... Meaing 1 clone, you feel things more intensely then 2... Less at 3... Etc... It
A) Makes more sense... Think of it as a signal, the fewer 'splits to the signal the truer it is
B) Reinforces the whole thing of the more 'clones' the more free they are to think for themselves as at a certain point the connection could be so faint it's more like an intuitive thing then real communication.

Also, I'd say at 1 perfect clone, the connection is REAL intense... So kicking Clone1 is like punching Cameron in the gut... If he has 2 clones the other 2 feel it like a slap in the face... Again that signal attenuation thing

Basically, clones are NOT disposable... ESPECIALLY perfect ones... (I've a whole plot idea as to why... Sorry???) so one of them dieing is a BAD THING(tm)

Everybody likes Candii. ^_^ Well, except AC. Ironically, both have the same player: Assleigh. xD

Hehehe right... Actually, that's by design... Don't want 2 characters who 'team up'... That's bad form, especially as a GM... Plus, it's fun to play REALLY different characters... I even have AC talking differently then Candii does as it helps me get into her mindset :)

hmm... okay, I like the sound of that.
I was going for the idea of 'the weaker the hivemind buffer, the stronger the experiences' but your idea makes sense too. Plus, you've got a plot idea, which is more than I have. (Can you tell me anything about the plot idea?)

Alright, good to know!

I guess it's shout out time...are there any interpersonal roles that are empty that a player wants filled for their character?

Oh no, Assh doesn't reveal her cards until the chips are down, haha. Besides, you have yet to get through the application process, remember? One thing at a time, people. :P

@Seph: Haha, I think we may all be getting ahead of ourselves here...that will be sorted out in more detail in Phase 2 and 3. :-) Nothing is set in stone ATM, after all :D

@Aribeth: Really? Go ahead! Copy in Assh, Pally and I and we'll talk about it :-)
Vergil's Faceclaim Archive; For All Your Character Model Seeking Needs!

Not telling you 'no' just be sure that as you engage the delinquents you remember that Class President has less authority then a hall monitor or a crossing guard when confronting them.
Wet blankets are pretty fun in the short term (mostly in making them suffer in various self-inflicted fashions), but my idea for his character arc was growing out of his killjoy tendencies and becoming a bit more fun. Hopefully.

Yeah, he does not actually have that much official power. He just wants to have it.

This was more or less my intention. Sorry if I was not clear. When I made the comparison to Dr. Strange, it was not a Power Level thing, merely pointing out a  comic book character that had similar traits. Yeah, with his ability he will start out incredibly weak, and very slowly grow into his power in story.

assleigh

I'm stumped too, Batman4560... In part, I think it's because there's not enough meat on Ryan's bones... Most of his back story is about things he's lost not who he is... Except for a few lines about being into games and the stooge of the Sportoes. I'd say sit with 'who he is' for a little bit... Even the questions:

What's his Dream College and why?
Who was his girlfriend, what did he like about her?
What sort of Athlete was he? Not just sports but was he a winner? A solid team mate, disciplined without that spark that makes a person great? A 'natural' with no discipline so a lot of his raw talent is untapped?

Basically, define him better and the Flaw will come to you

To clarify my earlier post about closing recruitment (for now)... Anyone who submits a proposal by Midnight Friday EST will be considered for Stage 2 by the players with approved characters. As an FYI I will be ammending the 3rd post in this thread with who is moving forward and for everyone's ease, I'll also post a reply with the short list. If your name isn't on the list, know we appreciate your interest and your hard work but after our deliberation decided to go with other applicants. We are looking to expand the community of writers involved in the game and are looking not just at the character proposal but how writers take suggestions and run with them as well as their ability to add elements to the game world we're sharing. This is a daunting task for both the applicants and established writers as it's VERY important to us that the divide between 'new' writers and 'old' ones be closed by the time characters are approved so we can be one big happy group of fun, creative people (dare I say it...friends).

No one is barred from Submitting a profile at a later date, should we open up recuitment again. I truly appreciate everyone who has spent even a few moments with this madcap idea of mine and adding to it. :)

Oooo. My ideas have no merit right now, but Sephora could be onto something. What if your guy/gal is chronically late? It's not on purpose, things just tend to happen all the time that make them late. And the hilarity would be that even after getting super speed, they're still late all the time.

Example: There's a meeting at noon. They know about the meeting and have been ready for it for days. On the way they get sidetracked by whatever, they superspeed there only to show up as the meeting is closing out.

I think we should be fine with considering your character (I don't have the final word on this, so don't take my word for this), but please, we've got too many rich/affluent kids. He can be 'comfortable', but 'rich' is something we have too much of. Sorry, but could you change your concept somewhat? Popular is fine, rich...not so much. Thanks and apologies.

@Loves: Please do go ahead and post first. While I do not have the final say on things, we'd certainly love to take a look at your character profile! ^_^

*inverts it then*
now hes a poor noone
always trying to make friends, but ends up somehow short. He runs track and cross country, keeps trying to get a good role in the drama club plays, but, well being poor leaves him prone to being one upped by the "prettier" talent, so to say.. them worn and faded clothes work against you and end up getting you typecasted!. The past couple years he tried to go for the bigger roles, and ended up just getting bit parts, so he ended up working with the stage crew and set design. maybe this year will be his lucky break!

Sephora

Being on track means him and Maya would probably interact a lot, as would the not being super rich thing.

Juggtacular

Dontae would probably interact with him as well since a lot of times people on different teams will train with other teams. Like a football player doing sprints with the track stars.

I want to honor the work done by those with proposals up for consideration, but see where these last three take things.

Keep in mind all that we've said to other writers proposing characters. Things like:

  • Make a person not a powerset
  • The Flaw is an RP jumpstarter not a power balancer
  • reread the first couple of posts to see what we don't need
  • the more fleshed out your character is, the more RP hooks you'll have
  • at the same time, be open to suggestions and input from others
  • The goal is to come up with a character you'll enjoy playing that makes everyone's character cooler

CHARACTER SHEET

NAME: Maddison Elise Tanner  (goes by Maddie)

AGE: 17

SEX: Female

APPEARANCE:

She has long golden blonde hair with rich highlights that seem to catch the sun and dance when she moves, falling in silky layers reaching the middle of her back. She stands at 5'1" tall and has a very curvy figure. Her movements flow in a sensual elegance. Her skin is soft and seemingly flawless, peaches and cream toned skin. Though if you look closer you will see a faded scar on her right arm from a childhood “incident” where she had tried to climb a tree on a dare from her brother only to find she was scared of heights! Her father had to come to her rescue with a ladder in order to get her down.

ORIENTATION: Straight

RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Single

TYPE: Cheerleader

POWER THEME: Teleporter

FLAW: Sweet and playful, Maddie enjoys meeting new people and is not at all shy. She talks (some might think too much) and from time to time can do so without a filter, saying the first thing that comes into her head. (Her parents say she suffers from foot in mouth disease) Though she is quick to apologize, often feeling regret and guilt if she has unintentionally hurt someones feelings with her blunt comments.

She is naturally affectionate and her curiosity seems to spill out in everything she does. Much like a friendly cat, she has a powerful need to learn everything she can about the people she meets. (Others just say she’s plain nosy). Maddie can be flirty like most teenage girls, she can take rejection hard and puts too much importance on what others think of her.  Her bid to be “normal” even though adopted causes her to bend to other’s wishes and go against what she knows is right or wrong.

One of her joys in life it baking. She spends hours in the kitchen baking all sorts of pastries, muffins, cakes, pies and piles and piles of cookies. Wanting to spread her joy through food, she often hands out boxes filled with her baking to friends and random people on the street. Baking makes her happy, and if there is one thing that Maddie enjoys being, its being happy! Though being obsessed with her looks, she refuses to even taste her creations, pawning them off on others. Unfortunately she is a lousy baker!

REPUTATION:  Maddie is known to her peers as a fun loving young woman who enjoys a good party, or even hours upon hours of chatting on the phone, through text and any other form of social media. She isn’t one to drink excessively, however she does enjoy gossiping with her friends. Anyone making a fool of themselves in front of her would most likely find their antics described in great detail to anyone who would listen.

That’s not to say she is considered to be nothing but a snob/gossip. No, there are some that have seen Maddie’s generous side. The side she tries to keep a secret, for fear that she may be seen with the wrong person and ruin her reputation at school.

She is known to the teachers as a student that doesn’t always put her best foot forward, but even though she can take the scenic route, she does eventually get to the point. All in all Maddie is an average student, with a friendly personality who blends in well with the “in” crowd, though isn’t nasty to those considered “outsiders” she doesn’t go out of her way to make friends with them either.

BIOGRAPHY:  Maddie lives a normal suburban lifestyle, with loving parents, one pain in the rump younger brother and a scattering of uncles and aunts and cousins. She was happy right up until she was eleven years old when she found out that she was adopted, and her entire world was effectively turned upside down. Initially keeping it a secret, Maddie’s parents thought it was best to keep the burden from their daughter. However they soon saw a change in their sweet little girl. Maddie became obsessed with “fitting in” with the children at school, almost obsessively going after what she perceived as “typical childhood character.”   Maddie wanted to feel normal again, and  the only way she knew how to achieve it was to appear as if she had everything under control.

On a personal level, Maddie loves her adoptive family very much, but still remains curious about her origins, and often thinks about finding a way to discover who her biological parents are and possibly even the rest of her biological extended family. Maddie has a kind, yet courageous, nature, but insecurity about who she really is leads her to be insensitive, causing regret afterwards.

Writing Prompt
It's the day of the big test...

Maddie was late!  Which of itself wasn’t that unusual. School in her opinion would do much better if it stated at a reasonable hour, say after lunch!  However that morning she knew she had to be on time and  had even set her alarm! (Not to mention her brother’s alarm… with a loving note attached that read  Wake me up sprog of ELSE!  And still… the shrill beep, beep, beep of her alarm continued to play in her subconscious, interrupting the part in her dream as  Zac Efron was about to kiss the daylights out of her! Life wasn’t fair!  Her right hand moved as she twisted in the bed ready to pound the snooze button for the third time when she slipped and fell out of bed with a thump and a loud squeaking protest.

Her hair was a mess, her lip throbbed from where she had struck the pile of books she had been using to study deep into the night. Slowly Maddie blinked the morning into focus. With one hand on the bed she pulled herself into a kneeling position and glanced at the clock.  Her eyes grew wide from horror, she bounced to her feet, struggling with the blanked twisted around her ankle and fell once more on her way to the door.  ”Mooooooom! Jeffery didn’t wake me!  Moooooom! I need a ride to school!” And so it was, another day in the life of a teenage girl named Maddison Elise Tanner!

Maddie showered and changed in record time, practically flying down the staircase to enter the kitchen. Dressed in her cheerleading outfit, she spent time she didn’t have fixing the pigtails that hung low on her shoulders and insisted (once again) that the skirt was NOT too short to wear out in public.  Rolling her eyes at her father, Maddie encouraged her mother to head out of the house using the ever so persuasive tone known as whining. Impatiently she settled into the passenger side of the Chevy Minivan her mother insisted on driving (regardless of  how un-cool it appeared) and groaned, hitting her head on the seat’s headrest when informed that they were waiting for her slug of a brother!

At last they were on their way!  The normal morning ritual of arguing pursued, and in some small way the normalcy of the act helped to calm her. The test she was going to be late for was important, with it being 50 percent of her grade! Summer school was not an option, besides, her father had told her that if her grades didn’t increase there was no way he was allowing her to go on the school ski trip, and Maddie HAD to go on that trip!  And so once the car pulled up outside of the high school that still had the odd student or two lingering outside in the smoking area, Maddie practically fell out of the car. A wave and a throw away comment of “I love you mom” was offered as she ran along the cement pathway, up the steps, and yanked open the glass doors that would allow her access to the main foyer.  The Announcements!  Pumping her fist, Maddie squealed and jumped for joy!  She wasn’t late!  By some miracle she wasn’t late!  (Little did she know that her mother had snuck into her room late last night and adjusted her daughters clock.)

”NO running in the halls!”

Mr. Masters voice bellowed, chasing her down the hallway as Maddie’s perfectly white tennis shoes squeaked on the waxed floor. Another throwaway comment was hurled over her shoulder as she called out her apologies before coming to a skittering halt outside of room 117, home room and site of the test for English.  The look on Mrs. Hisscocks face was not impressed, but then the woman often looked as if she had swallowed one too many lemons. Maddie took her seat, letting the door automatically close behind her with a soft click. She exchanged a “look” with Jenna, her best friend and ignored Nate, whom she was still not talking to after Saturday’s party at Troy’s house.  Now was not the time for such trivial thoughts.  She had to think about the tests.

With the announcements compete it was Mrs. Hisscocks turn drone on in a tone that was designed to wedge its way into the back of your eyes and stay there, needling your brain all day long. She walked the rows of seats, handing out the test papers and telling each child that sat in the front to take one and hand it down.  Why did teachers feel the need to instruct every little thing? Did they really think the kids at the front of the class were going to hog all the question sheets?  Fiddling in her backpack, Maddie fished out her lucky pen with the fuzzy topper. She smiled at Jason as he handed her papers, making sure to flutter her long lashes before throwing the papers behind her, barely looking at Nate.

Okay, mind off boys… first question

Maddie’s mind went blank! All those hours of cramming and now NOTHING?! The pen tapped nervously on the desk as she stared at the first question on the page. Maybe she needed an easier one? Her eye darted around the page searching for a question she knew the answer to and then, like the holy grail she saw it!

Name:

YES thought Maddie… I so have this one nailed!

The simple question of her name seemed to unlock the vault of knowledge in her mind and suddenly her hand began to flow across the paper like a drill that just struck oil! She didn’t know for sure, but suspected all the same… but this...this could be the best test ever taken in the history of tests taken by student everywhere!  Twenty minutes later and she was three quarters of the way through… next question, yes! Easy Peasy!  No summer school for her! She could almost taste the hot chocolate already!

”Time’s up! Papers over! Pens down!... I said down Mr. Harrison!”

Pleased with herself, Maddie handed the test back to the stern looking Mrs. Hisscock and offered the woman a bright smile. Yes indeed, that day was going to be one of the best ever! Heck, she might even forgive Nate!

second writing promp -  ski trip

Poster's go up in early October advertising the school's trip to the Copper Mountain Ski Resort. Maddie sat staring at the red B- on her paper. How? Why? It’s just not possible! She needed at least a B+ preferably and A in order to clinch the deal with her father! Narrowing her green eyes, she nibbled on her bottom lip and began to work things out in her mind. What she needed here was an upgrade on her grade! There had to be some wiggle room right? After all it was a paper on your “opinion” on the state of affairs in today’s political arena.  There was no right or wrong answer in an opinion! It was all argument, right? All she had to do was have all her ducks in a row…   A smile tugged at her lips. Her father loved that saying. He had a thing for Ducks! But then, who couldn’t love a duck?

The bell rang releasing all those students that hadn’t chosen to skip the class, lured away from the dreary routine of school by the warm weather and bright sun. Normally Maddie would be just as happy as anyone to escape the beige classroom with the light brown walls, and the cream floor, decorated with boring wooden desks. The room held no desire for her to stay! However, the paper with the B-  that needed to be changed held a lot of weight in that department and so, Maddie headed to the front of the class to wait out Mr. Masters stare. For a fat man he wasn’t very jolly! Maddie still remembered the time when she had compared him to a marshmallow. His cheeks were all toasty, puffed up on either side of his stubby nose. She hadn’t meant it as an insult, but boy did he seem to take it like one!  Hopefully he wouldn’t remember something so small and inconsequential when it came to the life and death of a girls social standing!

Maddie was ready for battle! There was a ski trip on the line and nothing, NOTHING was going to keep her from that trip! And so it began….  She approached  with a smile, inquiring as to whether she could speak with him, after all it was only polite not to assume he had nothing better to do, right?  The grunt and nod of his head lead her to believe that he was open to her questions, or rather debate as it were.   Like a dog with a bone, Maddie wasn’t going to let the subject drop. She stood her ground like a champ, arguing her case and answering each and every question shot her way! Maddison was in the zone! She could feel the answers tingling on the tip of her tongue before she even opened her mouth to give them life! Nothing was going to hold her back from opening his mind just enough to get her grade changed.  And although it was not changed to an A,  Maddie was able to bump it up to a B+ ….. though weather it was offered just to shut her up and send her one her way was debatable, she didn’t care! All that mattered was that Maddie had gotten what she needed!

That night at dinner Maddie waited on pins and needles for her father’s decision. He had the papers she had brought home  for his own perusal, glancing over them as his reading glasses perched on the tip of his nose. She watched for every twitch of his lip, nod of his head or disheartening sigh.  She hated those the most! After all it was impossible to read if the sign was there because it was a particularly touching paragraph, or… dare she think it…. her work wasn’t good enough! It was only when the angel of mercy disguised as her mother arrived to nudge her husband into coughing up the goods that Maddie had released the pent up breath she hadn’t known she was keeping.

YES!  The glorious answer was YES!

Maddie flew to her father’s side of the table and pulled him into an excitable hug and kiss before bestowing the same upon her mother. She ran down the hallway, taking the stairs two at a time, squealing about the slopes having her name written all over them, causing her parents to share a secret smile. Perhaps they felt guilty for the way she had found out about the adoption all those years ago… if they could give her something that made her this happy, then was that really so wrong?

The trip wasn’t for a while but there was so much to do! Standing before her closet Maddie began pulling out times and matching them into an acceptable wardrobe, and making a list of all the things that she would desperately need prior to the trip. Of course Maddie’s idea of “desperately need” and her mothers were too very different definitions. Still, she couldn’t wait to start packing, but first… a text to Jenna!

Operation snowbank is ago!

Shortly after the sound of puppy barking filled the room driving Maddie to leap upon her phone that was resting upon her bed.

Gr8t  me2

The trip was going to be everything that dreams were made of! Hot guys! Awesome displays of athletic skills (and just to be clear.. the guy’s, not her’s)  hot chocolate and cozying up at the hot tub!  Maddie was so happy she instantly thought of baking up a batch of her chocolate chip cookies for the trip! After all, a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach right? The sound of the phone barking caught her attention, and once more Maddie was staring at her phone….

Do NOT bake ANYTHING!

Loves- You're a descriptive writer and you breathed life into Maddie... One thing I'd like you to focus on as her flaw is the 'last' one... The generous spirit, giving baker who sucks at it... The other two can be personality quirks (and we have carries with one or the other of those, Foot in Mouth disease and the flirty thing) Or heighten her curiosity to the Nth degree so she keeps going "where Angels fear to tread". Mostly, I'm trying to pick out that which could make her unique in the game and still say 'play the character as you want to'

@Loves: Note what assleigh says, but we're not saying that Maddie can't be a flirt, but focus on something (baking or curiosity) and perhaps tone down the others somewhat, so they become aspects of her personality (quirks as my GM says), but not something you could really consider a character flaw.

NoNoNoNoNo! Maya and Dontae and anyone with a jock concept currently in the worms is cool. I posted that so we wouldn't get anymore :)

Thanks for checking though. *hands Maya a box of cookies with some of Maddie's super-sensational Pecan Sandies in 'em* Since you read my other post and reread the earliest posts in the thread.

CHARACTER SHEET

NAME: Jacob Xavier Wheatly

AGE: 17

SEX: male

APPEARANCE:

ORIENTATION: mostly straight, would take one hell of a guy to swing him the other way for a bit

RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Single, for now

TYPE: nerdy poor kid
POWER THEME: speedster

FLAW: Stubborn/hard headed. Once he sets his sights on something  he wont stop his pursuit of it. no matter how many times he fails, he gets right back up again, even if it comes at expense of his self. In his eyes, what more does he have to lose? This moves into a compulsive need to help people however he can. Be it helping someone pick up their books, turn a bully off from his prey, etc. These scenarios always seem to make him have a tardy to class rate of at least 50% (though for rehearsal and practice, he's never late), causing his attempt to see good in the world and try to help it grow, let him have detention with the troublemakers, when hes quite the opposite.
REPUTATION:  (Should be added after you work out connections to other characters)

BIOGRAPHY:  Jake has come form a poor family. Barely making enough to get by. His whole life, if he's wanted something, he's had to chase it. Unfortunately his families poor disposition sometimes seems to work against him and his ambitions in school. [more to be added once connections are made]

Scenario 1:
Alright, game time. One more test, one more step to my full ride scholarships. His feet tapped the ground quickly, watching the clock, then the teacher in anticipation of the beginning of the test. He has come to believe that he must excel at anything he possibly could so he could get a step ahead. His families poor disposition has left him little room for error if he wants to go on to bigger things in his life.

Flipping the test over, he grinned, If there was one thing that paid off, it was memorizing terminology while running. His feet continued to tap the ground, oddly enough acting as a mental stimulant. Since he memorized some of these things running, mimicking the act helped him remember as crystal clear as possible. He cruised through most of the test until he hit what felt like a road block.

Damn it, I thought this wasn't going to be on the test! His only advantage was that he at least recognized the problem. Without the proper way to solve it coming up to his head, he committed to trying to dissect the problem forma different angle. He maybe should've just moved on to the next section, but once he started, he was committed. Stubborn to the bitter end.

Finally, he gets in a work around. He sets his writing utensil down a moment to admire his handy work. But only just as he did this, there was only five minuets left! Thankfully, looking at the remaining questions, he took back off, it was like there was no roadblock to begin with. His feet began racing all over again, his mind racing with him as he filled in the remaining blanks. Finishing the paper, he signed his name and date and sprinted to the front of the room, slapping it on top of the pile as the bell rings right there after. "Another photo finish Mister Wheatly."

Well there's already the sports connection, but what if Dontae and he were friends and somewhat opposites. The popular rich kid, and he the mostly invisible, poor nerd guy. And there could be some subconscious resentment or something in there if you wanted to swing it that way.

Also, Dontae is one of the fastest runners at school, so to see Jacob one day just completely burn him after they got their powers would be hilarious.

apygoos, connections are the focus of Stage 2 for those invited to participate in it. For now let's focus on your character. I liked the writing prompt and how you shared his thought processes. The Flaw totally misses the mark. All you listed are personality/social quirks but bone serve as an RP hook. In fact, your "No matter what he tries to do it barely gets noticed" is a bar to RP not a way to spark it.

I'm at a bit of a loss to help you with one, mostly cause I'm tired but also... I'm still left wanting to know more. The closest I can see is "Driven to succeed at all costs" ... Okay, it's nice that you're all excited about this, but not everyone will make it in. We can't take too many people (we've tried, didn't work out well). Phase 2 is all about building character relationships, so while we like how enthusiastic you guys are, we don't want to have your characters have too many links to others just yet. After all, the existing cast hasn't been properly introduced to you guys yet, so no cliques just yet, please, and thank you. ^_^ There will be a time to build those connections later.

@Sephora: It's fine, we love the excitement. But we're don't want to see any new/old writers clique/divide in the RP, so we would prefer that the old writers also be involved when fleshing out character connections/relationships. We're looking at no more than 3-5 newcomers right now, but I don't see it as a hard limit, and we can probably be a little flexible.

all those personality things I listed are subject to change through gameplay. I felt his stubbornness and his need to "run off his problems" would be pretty strong hooks/quirks in themselves. As stated above, hes not on the sports teams cause he's sporty, he just likes to run his problems off. At least on cross country and track, his running is useful.

ok, to be a little clearer, you have to edit the sheet and come up with a Flaw as defined by the character sheet. It has to be something that will directly spark RP with your character. The Abition thing I called out was an example of what I'm looking for that I basd off how you presented the character. You don't have to use it but you do have to come up with something of your own.

Holy hell, I missed a lot.

Late Speedster: Love the idea, and I love the cosmic irony that it would entail, haha.

Maddie: Hey, you took my last name! Lmao. But anyway, Maddie looks pretty good, and I imagine she and Grace would get on like a house on fire. Things burning and people screaming and running for cover would be optional, of course.

Everything else: Bleh, too late to comment.

Anyway, thank you all for the applications, and we'll get back to you once we've made a decision :-) As Assh said, please don't be offended if we decide to reject your application....there are limited slots available, and we've had some trouble in the past with A) taking too many characters on board and B) not screening the players, and those players then causing problems down the line. In one case, two of them were actually the same person. Heh. We just want to make sure the people we take forward not only fit into the dynamic of the game itself, but also fit into the EXTREMELY active OOC chat that we have. If you don't get involved in the OOC, then you're only really experiencing half the game, and obviously have no say in the workings of the game because you're not giving your two cents....so yeah, involvement in the OOC is a huge must. :-)

So, that being said, good luck to all our applicants, and be warned that in Phase 2, I get a bit harsher. If Pally is Simon Cowell, I'm the guy they fired because they already had a Simon Cowell and Cowell was a little nicer. :P
I'm joking, of course. :D :P

Anyway! Good luck! We shall get back to you shortly :D

Birchleaf

Huh, apparently most of our player base is very much night owls, or maybe in a different timezone, since the action always seems to happen when I am asleep. So much for OOC interactions: hopefully I will be less busy eventually and able to engage in more of it. Oh well, whenever I have a break today I will check in and see what is happening, though with two stellar applications coming in I do not know if I can make the cut anymore.

At any rate, I will try to get that extra bit written as soon as I can get enough time away from chores to do so.

AribethAmkiir

Added the 2nd writing prompt to my character sheet.  Here's a quick link.

apygoos

there are many options to take for a character who's flaw is that they're stubborn/hardheaded. a person like that can find themselves in all kinds of interesting scneario's. If that doesn't qualify a as flaw, I'm not sure what to do. while to others a late speedster may be funny, but that changes the character i have envisioned drastically. pre superspeed, sure you can tally it up to things always happening making him always late. once he has superspeed though, for him to maintain that "expectation" of being late all the time, would imply hes arrogant with his powers and really doesn't care. that defeats the core of the character who's willing to do what he needs to do for success to make his position in life better than the family that barely makes rent and puts food on the table.

Vergil Tanner

I think we were just saying that it would be amusing if things kept happening to make him late. Nobody was saying to change the core of the character. People were just suggesting that him having super speed and still facing scenarios which made him late - for example, roadworks on the highway he would have used, so he had to take a detour that wound up getting him temporarily lost in a forest - could lead to some interesting scenarios. No need to take it so personally, dude.
Regardless, the point of the "Flaw" is to give the character some "hooks" to RP with other people and make it fun to interact with them, so all that was being requested - by my understanding, at least - was to clarify what you meant by your flaw and expand upon how that would present fun and interesting RPing opportunities.

It so totally won't
But at least I have an excuse :p

:)

I am still on my phone so I can't edit easily, but I was thinking of vulnerabilities and faults for after she becomes a teleporter. I was thinking that she wouldn't be able to teleport into a space that she hadn't at least seen a picture of, but would be stronger in her abilities if she had actually been there.

Say, for example: Maddie decided to test out her powers by teleporting into the school from her home. She would be able to clearly see one of the classrooms in her mind's eye and would therefore be able to be accurate in placing herself in her seat.

However, she would be vulnerable to the present situation that she has no knowledge of. Meaning, the janitor could be cleaning in that room at the exact moment she teleports. Or someone might have actually moved the furniture so instead of arriving in a chair she ends up on top of the teachers desk.

Also, for places she has only seen in a picture, the same uncertainty is there. After all the picture might be years old and what was a garden is now a swimming pool.

If she wanted to break into a bank (just an example) she would be better off going to the bank during working hours to find the best place to "land" and maybe visit the bank over a period of time to cement the image in her mind.

And that was a lot to type in this itty bitty screen!

:D

-please forgive autocorrect spelling and downright switching of words :p

Vergil Tanner

Hmmm....sounds like some interesting limitations, but we can work on those if you get through to the next stage. :-) Bear in mind that we do have an application for another teleporter, so if you both get through, we may be asking one of you to alter your powers to avoid doubling up. But we'll cross that bridge if we get to it, eh? :-)

@Kaio: Honestly, that's up to Assh to decide. :-)

That's part of what we're discussing :-) As far as we're concerned, I believe the bios have all been edited to the extent they need to be for us to make our final decision. We'll get a decision back to you (probably posted by Assleigh, our Lord and Master) as soon as we have one. :-)

I do need to make clear, though, that this is only Phase One; Phase Two will probably require yet more editing and refinement, and if you (royal "you") get through to Phase Two, it is not a guarantee that you'll get through that. This is all just to make sure you're a good fit, so please don't be discouraged :-)

Are all the decisions going to be informed at once? Or do we get to know one at a time, once our character is reviewed?

Vergil Tanner

I'm not sure; only Assleigh can answer that, since she has the final say and I would hate to force her into a corner (well, I'd love to force her into a corner, but that's neither here nor there). I imagine that as soon as she gets online - being in a different time zone - she'll let everybody know what's going on. :-) I would imagine it would be all at the same time, but I have been wrong before, so don't quote me on that.

Yes, I will alter the earlier post and make a new reply to let everyone know where they stand. As stated before this, it will be a simple message listing who is moving onto stage 2. If afterwards anyone has any questions remaining or wants feedback about their proposals please feel free to PM me. After the list goes up a PM me.

I have a  slightly odd question; would not completing the third writing prompt hurt my chances?
My internet is down at the moment, so I can't really sit down at my xomputer and type out the story. It should be up by tommorrow or tuesday, but you all might have made a decision by that point.
Now, I don't want my chances to bw hurt because of bad luck. So, if having a response would help my chances, I could type it out on my phones and send it that way. It would just take me awhile, eat up a chunk of my data,  and probably xontain a few spelling errors

Yes, I would like to assess everyone on an even playing field... But thanks for the heads up about your computer troubles. It's better if you get it in tomorrow if you can. I'm not going to tell you how to manage your data plan and stuff but I  will be traveling mid day tomorrow so probably won't be on until the evening.

I think I must have submitted my character sheet after one of the promps because I only saw two. The one that was on the cs  and the one that came in after I submitted my sheet.

@Loves: No, it's two prompts. You get a choice of one of two for the first one when you submitted your character. The 'third' prompt is the second one you have to write out. So no worries there.

Alright, here is prompt number three: the ski trip.
Apologies for any spelling/grammar errors.  I am on  my phone, and on some high end pain meds.

Apologies for the strangeness of the response.  I am on pain meds, and tired from work.
This Is loosely based off of something that happened to me as kid

The one thing he was told by the man who gave him the job was that 'A goose is not a duck, alright? If a goose has a ball, you let him keep that ball.' At the time it seemed like just a bit of a strange joke, but as Cameron felt the teeth of a goose rip his jeans, he wished he'd listen to the man.

@JamesSureWould: Hey, thanks for typing that up despite your computer troubles and being on your phone and all. It was an enjoyable read, not strange at all. Dunno why you're on meds, but hope you get better soon! ^_^

As stated in the earliest post in this thread we're lookign to add 3-5 new writers to the game and the quality of the responses we got had us invite the following 5 people into Stage 2 of the Character Approval process:

I want to thank everyone for the work they put into their character proposals and the maturity and creativity they displayed as changes were asked for and as I dropped a new writing prompt on everyone. It's been a pleasure getting to know everybody and honestly, it was gratifying to see the continued interest in this little madcap idea of mine.

Yes, thank you everybody for your interest, and I wish you luck in your future endeavours, regardless of whether you made it through or not :-) The quality was really top notch, but in the end, we had to make a decision. I hope to see you all around the boards :D
