That Girl Analise

OK, so, most of my role plays on this site have led me to do shorter posts, simply because of the nature of the roleplays themselves. So I think I want to play out a non-adult scene with an idea I've had for a long while based on the song "Traveling Soldier" by the Dixie Chicks. The lyrics, in case you have no interest in listening, are as follows:

Two days past eighteen
He was waiting for the bus in his army green
Sat down in a booth in a cafe there
Gave his order to a girl with a bow in her hair
He's a little shy so she gives him a smile
And he said would you mind sittin' down for a while
And talking to me,
I'm feeling a little low
She said I'm off in an hour and I know where we can go

So they went down and they sat on the pier
He said I bet you got a boyfriend but I don't care
I got no one to send a letter to
Would you mind if I sent one back here to you

Chorus: I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Never more to be alone when the letter said
A soldier's coming home

So the letters came from an army camp
In California then Vietnam
And he told her of his heart
It might be love and all of the things he was so scared of
He said when it's getting kinda rough over here
I think of that day sittin' down at the pier
And I close my eyes and see your pretty smile
Don't worry but I won't be able to write for awhile

[Chorus]

One Friday night at a football game
The Lord's Prayer said and the Anthem sang
A man said folks would you bow your heads
For a list of local Vietnam dead
Crying all alone under the stands
Was a piccolo player in the marching band
And one name read but nobody really cared
But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair

[Chorus x2]

It's a love story between a girl in high school and a boy, not much older than herself, who is going to fight in the Vietnam war. They meet at the cafe she works at, and, for a few short hours after her shift, they get to know each other and she agrees to write him, since he has no one.

I have further ideas for this, and I'll be happy to explain them to anyone interested, but first, I'd like to explain what I want as far as the writing itself.

When the characters are getting to know each other, the length is less important to me... but I'd like a decent size. After they split up and he goes to boot camp, I want it to be long. The mail system in the seventies was not as good as what we have now, and it could easily be a couple of weeks for a letter to get where they want it to... possibly longer once they ship him overseas for the war... The letter needs to cover that whole time. I'd also like some flashes of real-time life in there. What's been going on?

I'm good playing either character, by the way. I have ideas for both of them.

This sounds fascinating.  The Vietnam era is one of my favorite.  I'd love to play this as the soldier.  What ideas did you have in mind?  What type of personalities for each character?
