You haven't heard of Snopes? Read it. Great site.

And thanks for letting me know that the news is fake! Sorry...

Snopes is my go-to if something sounds too weird to be true.  The tritone article was funny, though.

The scary thing is that sounds just like the kind of thing Cruz really would do...  O.o

It was the 'series of tweets' that clued me in - although I can imagine Bernie doing a rendition of 'Maria'.

His wife's maiden name is O'Meara.  XD

Ah, earworms.  #SorryNotSorry.

My problem with such articles is that with today's politicians, you can honestly believe them saying these things.

Sorry to come back to PiS again, but that satirical article isn't far off from what these guys are saying for real. Ten years ago, one of their politicians honestly went on record with suggesting that the Teletubbies were promoting homosexuality. And these days? Let's just say that, only a few days ago, the Defense Minister publicly stated that the 2010 presidential plane crash was an act of terror (and only stopped short of saying that Russia was responsible):

http://www.thenews.pl/1/9/Artykul/244537,Polish-defence-minister-hints-at-terrorism-in-2010-plane-crash

The same guy, in the last few days, also claimed that the US politicians have no right to comment on our Constitutional crisis, as the USA has only been founded in the 18th century. So they should not be lecturing Poland on the matters of democracy, as we've had it first etc.

Seriously, this is the kind of stuff one of our leading politicians is saying. So, really - these days, I can believe in politicians saying all kinds of nonsense...  :-(

Though they've conveniently forgotten that Poland's version of democracy was and still is legendarily ineffective - liberum veto and all.

President Obama is apparently planning to nominate Merrick Garland to fill Scalia's seat on the Supreme Court.

The GOP Senate has vowed to block any nomination by Obama.  This is idiotic.  Obama is offering a moderate.  If the GOP hold out for January 2016, then they're likely to face a more liberal candidate nominated by Clinton.

And possibly after they've lost control of the Senate.

From what I heard, the Senate Republican leader said they were following the Biden Rule; in which then Senator Joe Biden told President Bush (the first) in 1992, that when Bush had the chance to nominate a candidate to fill an empty Supreme Court seat in his last year, that he should not do it, and should instead let the next President do that.

/shrug   Of course now Vice President Biden is all for the President being allowed to submit a candidate (now that it's a Democratic President). Technically Biden is being a hypocrite by opposing the rule he proposed so many years ago. If it's good for one President, it should be good for any President. As I see it, he's playing politics (which is the DC norm there), but he has no real excuse to say that a SCOTUS candidate has to be confirmed this year when he is on record opposing the same situation (nominating a SCOTUS justice in a President's last year in office) for a President of his own party.

They are twisting what Biden said.

Robert Reich posted about this earlier today

Relevant paragraph:

Quote
Biden was speaking hypothetically – there was no nominee before the Senate at that time – and he concluded by saying that if the President were to nominate someone he was sure the Senate and the President could come to an agreement.

It's pretty ballsy to claim there was a 1992 retirement or death when you can just look it up. I don't blame Zakharra but whoever started that pisses me off.

Gee, Byron White retired when?

Bald-faced lie is bald-faced lie, Zakharra.

The most interesting thing I learned from that chart is that John Tyler was booted out of his own party.

It's fairly easy for an 'if' to change into a 'when' over countless retellings.  I've already sent notice to my Senators that they shouldn't stall the process - in one case, it was a vote of support, in the other it was definite criticism (Toomey is trying to block it, Casey is supporting consideration of Garland.)

I hadn't done much research into the matter, but listened to what I heard on the radio (local news, the morning news hour and the top of the hour new briefs), they mentioned the Biden rule and when I goggled it, wiki didn't have much on the matter.

For myself, I am ambivalent, but I think they should at least look at the nominees. They don;t necessarily have to confirm the nominee or have to move fast, but they should at least look at the guy's credentials.

Oniya

I know I've seen at least one Senator quoted as saying if Merrick Garland is nominated by 'another President' that he would be considered.  Kinda makes their motives seem a little dicey.

Russia's pulling back in syria by the way, but from everything it seems like they got assad's regime back into a stalemate and are sort of tucking tail.

If Hillary wins the Presidency, she should nominate Bernie Sanders for the Supreme Court, just to fuck with the Republicans.  "You didn't want to approve a moderate like Garland?  Okay, then try a Socialist."  If the Democrats retook the Senate, it would be a fine example of 'don't fuck with us'.

As I said over in the Presidential Candidates thread - love Bernie, but he doesn't have the resume to be a Supreme Court judge.  However, as Zillah pointed out over there, Obama does.  >:)

Id personally have no one in the current administration (either dem or rep) joining the supreme Court. They would screw that branch up just as bad as they have screwed up their own.

But Obama wouldn't want to spend his next twenty years sitting on the Supreme Court bench, would he? Not his kind of a job at all - he thrives on meeting people, and on playing his own game, rather than reviewing other people's decisions to no end.

In one of the strangest hauls of lost books in the last few decades,  an entire library on occultism, black magic and witchcraft and their history which was gathered up by none other than Heinrich Himmler has been found in a secret storage depot belonging to the Czech national library in Prague; the depot had not really been used since the 1950s and it was all but forgotten. 13.000 volumes in all, from really old (the late middle ages?) to the early 20th century. Like many early adopter Nazis, Himmler dabbled in occultism and black magic, and he had an idea that the witch hunts represented an effort by the Roman Catholic church to suppress the remains of "Aryan religion"...  ::) - so he was specially interested in witches.

During the war people like Himmler and Göring had ample opportunities to indulge in collecting the books they wanted for free, from the very people Himmler and the SS had deported. Himmler was planning to set up his special black magic library at a castle he had taken over in western Germany, but the books ended up being stored near Prague instead.

This is enchantingly bizarre, but it's not the only find of its kind - there's been a series of efforts in Europe in later years to locate books and art that was stolen by the Nazis (mostly from jews and other people who were deported) and restore these to the heirs of those who once owned them.

That's exactly what I was thinking, actually. It seems like the premise for a horror or action-fantasy story/movie.
