Game Premise

MUTATION

The American government verified the existence of mutants and the X-gene in 2017. Other governments around the world soon followed their lead. That admission generated a host of reactions; some good, some not so good. Mutation is known but not entirely understood – and far from accepted. The general population is both curious and fearful. Mutants are likewise cautious about revealing their genetic status for fear of potential repercussions. Governments work to create new legislation that takes this newly recognized step in evolution into consideration. Some countries have created new laws to protect the rights and welfare of mutants while maintaining that of the human population, so that both may live together in harmony. Others have not taken such an enlightened approach to the situation. Discrimination is not uncommon. Travel is difficult. There is talk of registration for mutants.

Some humans have reacted with outright hostility and racism. Some mutants have behaved just as badly towards humans. Those with physical mutations are particularly persecuted, as they cannot hide their genetic status. These individuals are often forced to hide or live in squalid conditions. Mutant ghettos are forming in major cities. Still others are openly proclaiming their mutant status, refusing to hide. A new civil rights movement is forming. Human on mutant crime is not uncommon; mutant on human crime exists as well, and mutants take advantage of other mutants. Despite all efforts to prevent it, a hierarchy is forming. This kind of crime requires a new kind of police force. To that end, the NYPD formed the Mutant Crimes Division in 2020 with the backing of an anonymous donor, enlisting the best officers – human and mutant – that they could find. Together they work with the experts at the Xavier Institute to solve the new wave of crime plaguing the streets of New York and to keep both mutants and humans safe.

LOCATION AND STYLE

The game takes place in and around New York City. It is a sandbox style game with GM events to help drive plots and gameplay. The focus of the game is on character development and interaction in a gritty, realistic world where people with incredible abilities are trying to live alongside those without them, people that may resent or even fear them. The game is influenced by the tone and realism of Bryan Singer’s X-Men films and police procedural television shows such as CSI and Bones to create an alternate universe where heroes are real people and super teams have yet to be formed.

The Xavier Institute
THE XAVIER INSTITUTE

Xavier's mansion in Westchester is the home of the Xavier Institute, a premiere research facility for the study and cultivation of mutation and mutant abilities. On the surface, the Institute is the face of the best and the brightest that mutation has to offer. Working hand in hand with top notch research institutions, hospitals and the MCRD, Xavier and his people strive to paint mutation in a positive light. But the Xavier Institute also serves another purpose; as a resource for mutants seeking another life, a sort of underground railroad that will assist anyone looking for help with their powers, training, or even safe travel to the free state of Arcadia, where mutants can live in peace. Run by Professor Charles Xavier in cooperation with Dr. Moira McTaggert and other experts in the field, there is no institution that knows more about mutation on the planet.

Several of the Institute’s former residents have gone on to become part of the MCRD – the Mutant Crimes Division.

The Mutant Crimes Division
THE MUTANT CRIMES DIVISION

The Mutant Crimes Division is a specialized branch of the New York Police Department dedicated to the investigation of illegal activities involving or related to mutants. Established in 2020, the MCRD consists of a cadre of talented mutant and human detectives, forensics officers and experts uniquely suited to deal with mutant-related crimes.

MCRD officers investigate incidents that may involve mutants in any capacity, as perpetrators or victims. They are responsible for collecting and cataloging evidence found at the scene, interviewing eyewitnesses, moving victims – mutant and human - in the affected areas to safety and taking the suspected offenders into custody. They have the authority to provide protective custody for endangered mutants and to assist with the transfer of mutants to safe locations. Officers also assist local authorities in situations where illegal mutant activity is suspected, or where said criminal activity may be life threatening to civilian human and/or mutant populations.

The Pro Mutant Agenda
THE PRO MUTANT AGENDA

Erik Magnus is a powerful businessman and CEO of Magnus Enterprises, a multi billion-dollar international corporation with a pro-mutant agenda. He has publicly embraced the confirmation of the X-gene and has a no discrimination policy in all his businesses. This public show of goodwill is hiding a far less altruistic agenda. The corporation is a front for Magnus' private and personal goals. ‘Erik Magnus’ is just one of many aliases used by Michael Maolmhudaidh, a former member of the Irish Republican Army, known in mutant circles as Magneto. Unbeknownst to his human business associates he is one of the most powerful alpha mutants on the planet who can control all forms of magnetism.

Magnus believes that mutants are superior to humans and that the differences between humans and mutants are irreconcilable. His goal is nothing less than a new world order, a utopia where mutants rule and Homo sapiens serve, if they are allowed to exist at all. To that end, he is quietly and secretly amassing his own secret mutant militia. They are headquartered in the Magnus building in Manhattan and he is grooming them for the eventual takeover of the planet.

New York's Elite
NEW YORK'S ELITE

Recently, a new private club has opened on the Upper West Side of the city, located in a converted mansion rumored to have once belonged to the Rockefellers, catering to the very top layer of society. Membership is exclusive, costly and difficult to obtain. Potential members must be recommended by a current member, go through a thorough vetting process before being granted a probationary membership and must of course, pay a hefty membership fee. Then of course, there is the initiation.

It’s rumored that anything that is one desires can be obtained at the Club. Gambling, world class entertainment, fine dining, premium cigars in the Club Cigar Bar, top shelf liquor not found anywhere else in New York, the most exquisite dancers in the strip club. Underneath the surface is another layer; where mutant escorts are available in the most exclusive brothel in the city, and patrons can watch mutants fight each other in the Boxing Club.

The membership of the Club is mixed; both human and mutant are welcome. But the mutant membership has grown considerably in recent months - more mutants are showing up among the elite families as well as the rest of the population. In many ways, some mutants have big advantages over humans that can help them be more successful in the real world. Furthermore, it is one of very few places where mutants who cannot pass for human can find employment; working in the casino, fighting in the Club’s cage matches, working security, and serving in other capacities.

The club’s name is as provocative as what it offers: Hellfire.

The U.S. Government
THE U.S. GOVERNMENT

Rumors abound that the U.S. government has set up a secret task force to study mutation and the X-gene. Currently, the government has stated officially that it has no plans to set up its own study of mutation, but instead plans to support ongoing research as premiere facilities such as the John Hopkins Medical Center and private research institutions across the country. However, it has set up a Department of Mutant Affairs and registration of mutants is an issue under discussion by the Department and Congress. Rumors among the mutant community are rampant. Some say that the government is collecting mutant 'volunteers' for study. Others say it's for experimentation. One thing is certain. The man in charge of the DMA - Dr. Albert Kynes - knows almost as much about mutation as Charles Xavier.

While the rumors cannot be confirmed, there is no doubt that mutants disappear from the streets with alarming frequency, never to return. No one knows where they go...

Tell Me About the Game ~ Game Information

Game Information
Who is the GM? Your GM is Kuroneko.

Will there be a co-GM? That depends on the size of the game. Having run a large Marvel game for nearly 10 years on another forum mostly on my own, I'm comfortable with doing the same thing here. But it could be nice to have one.

What section will the game be placed in? Extreme small groups. Given the setting and premise, there is likely to be violence in addition to any sexual content, and I feel more comfortable having the game in extreme for that reason. This is a gritty and realistic world. Characters will be likely be engaging in combat, dealing with crime and its effects and potentially gruesome plots. They may get injured themselves (with the writer's permission, of course).

This is not a first come first served story. I will be looking at post history and style of all applicants. Character sheets may be declined if the proposed character and/or player isn’t a good fit for the game. I also want a good power balance in the game.

Is the game LGTBQ friendly? Of course! Everyone is welcome.

Is cross gender writing allowed? Absolutely.

Are any of these characters superheroes? No. There are no superheroes in this world. No super teams. No X-Men as presented in the comics. No Avengers. At least, not yet. This game deals with people that have superhuman abilities and what challenges that presents for them in the world – and what the world wants from them now that it’s known they exist.

What is the power level of characters in the game? Your character is a mutant, not a god. Nothing above movieverse level powers. This means that the powers of many characters will need to be dialed back to a more realistic level for the game.

Just X-Men characters, or are other Marvel Characters allowed? Other Marvel characters are allowed.

Will alternate versions of canon characters be allowed? Yes. This was the main premise of my previous Marvel board, and I’m happy to continue that premise here.

Are original characters welcome? Honestly? I’m not a huge fan of OC’s, since there are literally hundreds of canon characters to choose from and I will let you change them quite far out of their original configuration. There are extensive lists of canon characters along with biographical information at The Marvel Directory and the Marvel Wiki. But - Some people really love their OCs, so I will consider them, with a few caveats. You may only have one OC. OCs may have either one power/power set alone or one power plus a physical mutation. OC powers must have significant limitations and cannot be a copy of an existing canon power.

Are Human Characters Allowed? Absolutely.

How many characters are allowed per player? To begin with, I’m going to limit it to two until the game gets off the ground. After that, and if there is enough interest, we can look at adding additional characters per player.

Is there an age limit for characters? All characters must be 18 years of age or older.

Are there any prohibited characters? There are a handful of characters that require a discussion with the GM before application, mainly because of their power level. They are marked in the canon list, which is far from inclusive. If there are any doubts about a character, please feel free to ask.

Where will gameplay start? The game takes place in and around New York City.

What sort of events/plots will be taking place? I have several in mind. Given the nature of the world at hand and the emerging place of mutants within it, there are multiple things that can happen. The possibilities are limitless. As always, I’m open to hearing from players regarding possible scenarios. Keep in mind that Bad Things are Going to Happen.

What’s the story to smut ratio? Though it really depends on the writers involved, ideally storytelling and character development will be the main focus of the game, with a mix of smut as desired. Balance is the key.

What Are the Rules?

The Rules

The GM is the final arbiter.

Be Polite: Please treat the other players as you yourself would want to be treated.

IC Drama is Good. OOC Drama Is Not: We're all adults here. Please be respectful and considerate to everyone. Be polite, and treat everyone the way you would like to be treated. Please try and settle any OOC disagreements privately. If you’re not able to, or you’d like assistance, please contact the GM and ask for help.

Do not discriminate towards a player because of their character. They are two separate entities.

Real life comes first! That being said, group games hinge on player participation. Ideally, it would be great if players could post once a week. If you can’t post, please let us know.

In the event a player disappears altogether, the GM will npc them out of the scene. Sometimes group threads move very quickly. If it's your turn to post, then please do so. If you cannot post in a timely fashion, please allow other players in the thread to post around you. Don't hold up other players unnecessarily if at all possible. But again, real life comes first.

Communication is Key: Are you going to be away for a bit and can’t post? No problem, let us know when you’re going to be back. Have an idea for a game event? We’d love to hear it. Need help figuring out what to do with your character? Let us know, and we’ll help. Need to leave the game? We’re sorry to see you go, but thank you for telling us. You want to come back? That’s great! Have an issue with the game in general? Please let us know. This is a collaborative effort, and if there are any issues, we want to know.

Writing Style: For the sake of continuity, all gameplay posts should be written in third person, past tense. Additional posts – in a journal, phone call, text communications, etc. - may be written in whatever way you please. Use correct paragraphing, grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc. to the best of your ability.

For the sake of readability, I ask that posts be made entirely in black font. Please do not use another color for dialogue. Also, please do not change the font in your posts. The default size on some of them is rather small, and not everyone can read them easily.

Post Length: While I have no desire to set a specific post length, one liners are not acceptable. Be sure that your posts contain enough information, actions, reflection, description and dialogue (when appropriate) for your scene partners to react to. Move the scene along rather than simply rehashing what has already been posted.

Posting multiple characters in one post - Players with multiple characters are expected to post each one separately, even if they are in the same thread.  If you applied for more than one character, you are expected to play them as individuals, not as a hive character (unless, of course, your character is a hive character, lol). Occasionally, it might make more sense to condense your characters into one post to move a thread, but it should be the exception and not the rule. Posting characters separately increases our post count and gets us closer to big game status quicker.

Powergaming, metagaming and godmodding will not be tolerated. If you feel that your character has been subjected to god-moding, please politely ask for an edit. Sometimes, people are unaware of other players boundaries with NPCing. It's also more difficult to avoid godmodding and so on when characters have new histories that are different from the ones we know, or when they have powers such as telepathy. Please be mindful and when in doubt about another character, ask.

While there is no strict posting order, use common sense. Let everyone else in the scene reply before you post again unless an agreement has been reached between all the players to do otherwise. Excitement and enthusiasm for the game is great! But no one likes to come back to the board and find out they've be skipped and the scene has moved on without them.

No one may inflict damage or otherwise harm or kill another player’s character without their expressed permission. No one may kill a mod NPC without the permission of the GM. This includes any non-con or extreme content as well as combat.

A special note about fight scenes. Regardless of your character's abilities, it is unlikely that he or she would always land a punch or kick, or be able to dodge all of their opponent's attacks. You can write that an attack is coming, and how unavoidable you think the attack is, but you cannot assume that your blow will land. You must give the other character(s) a chance to respond, unless you have made a prearrangement with the other writers. You must also take damage, as well as inflict it.

All posts must use the provided post header and must be tagged for content. Be sure to add a warning for explicit, NC or violent content in the header, and place triggering content behind a spoiler.

Character Creation

Guidelines
GENERAL GUIDELINES

Read the rules first. They’ll tell you what the expectations are for the game.

Take a look at the character list of NPC's, taken and canon characters to see what characters are available.

When in doubt, read some of the accepted bios. Nothing helps you to know what we're looking for more than reading an accepted bio or two. Plus, you're going to want to read them eventually, to get to know the other characters in the game.

Have an idea what you want your character to do, and how you want to start them in the game. This is a must. Although I have a plan for gameplay, it helps if players have an idea of what they want to do with their characters.

Please use the coded bio sheet and do not alter the code. All info in the sheet is required. Please fill out the sheet completely.

Be creative. You don’t have to write a novel when creating your sheet, but players do need to have a good idea who this person is by the end of reading it. Yes, things are not all sunshine and rainbows for mutants and no doubt that's had an effect on most people in some way; but not everyone comes from a broken home, or has had a bad childhood. Your bio will be better if stereotypes are avoided. Include weaknesses as well as strengths.

Faceclaims are not required, but are encouraged. Given that some characters are not human looking, comic images are welcome.

Please be open and receptive to feedback from the GM. If you're asked to make edits and then resubmit your sheet, then please do just that. Edit and resubmit. I know that people get attached to their characters and to details, but I only ask for edits when there's a good reason - such as making sure your character fits into the game world. Please don't take it personally. Very few bios make it into any game without a few tweaks.

Soooo, I'm tossing this up to see if there's any interest in writing these characters in a gritty game world. If so, please check the this post in the Game Information Thread, for a list of characters that have been reserved or are in play as NPC's for the game, as well as a general list of canon characters.

Very interested.   Concept would be the son of Tony Stark, mutant with the mutation of hyper intelligence and invention, and has used such powers to build himself a set of combat armor.  Not Ironman, but more patterned after Captain America, upper street level as far a scope of abilities for the armor.

Imogen

I am interested. Need to make sure I have enough time, but if I do I'd probably be looking at a regular canon character.

In writing, a flaw is not the interesting part of a character.  What is interesting is how a person overcomes a flaw.  I want to read how a person overcomes a flaw, not how the flaw overcomes the person.

I do have a question, if there are no hero groups operating in 2025, then how would our characters come to be.  I am having a difficult time wrapping my head about it.

I'm not sure I quite understand the question correctly, but that might be because I'm up with a migraine, lol. I'll take a crack at answering it anyway and you can tell me if it helps.

Since this is an alternate universe the characters will all need to have backgrounds and histories that allow them to fit into the basic premise of the game. Superheroes do not exist (yet); but, the Mutant Crimes Division of the NYPD is made up of both human and mutant police officers, so in essence they function as a super-powered task force, with police oversight. The Xavier Institute isn't a school, but as experts on mutation they assist mutants who desire - or require - assistance with their abilities. The people they employ and work with aren't the X-Men; but the potential for them to develop into them in game is there. The Brotherhood doesn't yet exist; but Magneto is currently recruiting like-minded individuals to his cause. The Hellfire Club exists here as an illicit playground where anything can - and does - happen, and where obvious mutants can find employment.

There are several potential ways that I think characters have for developing and working with each other. Several of the 'events' I have planned revolve around the MCRD and how they interact with the other groups, so my hope is that players will want to place characters there. To offer an example, Marrow will be a detective in the MCRD that received training and assistance from the Xavier Institute in order to gain control of her powers. Using your character idea of Stark's son, if he were a MCRD detective, perhaps the armor he's developing/has developed is potentially used for all of the MCRD officers, or he has made other equipment for them? Maybe he's collaborated with the Xavier Institute on projects as well. The plan is for Forge be with Magnus, so it would be good for the MCRD to have someone with similar abilities for balance in the game, not that I want to force you to go one place over another.

Basically, the characters are ordinary people that happen to have extraordinary abilities, and find opportunities in this version of a real world that allows them to use them - for good or otherwise. Then we toss them into difficult situations, and see what happens ;-)

Does that answer your question?

Heya :)

Would that be possible to join, and play Emma Frost ?

Empyrean

Hey Kuroneko! I remember playing in Metamorphosis as Jamie Madrox and Emma Frost. Fun times! :)

I'm definitely marking interest, but I have a question. Are obvious physical mutants welcome in the MCRD? I had the idea of playing either Leech (if they'd allow a green-skinned, yellow-eyed mutant into their ranks), or Morph if they don't. I always did like Morph in Exiles.

Hi Opale :-) . Emma is definitely a possibility. I don't know what you had in mind for her, but with her powers she could make an excellent criminal psychologist or MCRD detective.

Empyrean! *hugs* Obvious mutants are indeed welcome. I think they would provide a way for the officers to gain the confidence of mutants when they're out on the street - and also be a publicity stunt show of support from the NYPD ;-)

Someone else who likes Morph. ^_^

*is working on a sheet for Toad*

Yay! I see your sheet in my inbox, so I'll look it over shortly.

Certainly interested in this as well. Currently thinking I'll play Tony Masters/Taskmaster working for the Hellfire Club, maybe as a potential Head of Security or something like that.

He'd likely be great in that position. I would want to be sure that he has connections elsewhere too, in order to the make sure that you have lots of RP possibilities.

I would be interested in playing Scarlet Witch. :)

A movieverse Wanda could work in many places in the game :-)

I'm game! I would like to play as Monet St.Croix who works for Magnus Enterprise.

I've got your sheet, and I'll be looking over it today :-)

Thank you everyone!

Hey everyone!

Sorry for the delay in replying to all your questions/posts. I had a minor medical procedure this morning and just got back home.

Yay! I see your sheet in my inbox, so I'll look it over shortly.

I hope whatever it was went okay. *leaves cookies*

And take your time. You know I love Toad. ^_^

Hope the procedure went without complications, Kuroneko. :)

Hmm... movieverse?  So more of a telekinetic.  I can do that. :)    Although I disliked her dream powers.

You can definitely go that way. It's the reality warping that I think would have to be toned down to adjust for the powers level in this world.

heya :)

indeed, making Emma Frost a profiler or something seems well fitting !

as for pictures, I'm going to ask you people to vote between different versions, to see how inspiring this character is :

version 1 :

version 2 :

version 3 :

I like 1 and 2. I think it depends on what kind of personality she has. Version 1 seems softer and Version 2 seems stronger.

Question can we work FOR the government for example be a mutant with the FBI whose from the government family might be a fine recruit after a college degree, FBI training and likely placement in counter terrorism or other role?

Not sure who one of the Greys might work but there are other others. And yes she would likely have donated her time and genetic material for R&D purposes.

And it might be a nice counter to Professor X to have a telepathic player in another camp who might not like meddling from untrained outside groups but support New York's work.

Okay. :) Have you figured out the format for the character sheet yet?

Yes, the character sheet and a coded version is now located at the bottom of the second post in this thread :-)
