Serenity/Firefly game?
« on: April 23, 2006, 03:42:41 AM »
"After the Earth was used up, we found a new solar system and hundreds of new Earths were terraformed and colonized. The central planets formed the Alliance and decided all the planets had to join under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point. After the War, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the edges of the system, far from Alliance control. Out here, people struggle to get by with the most basic technologies. A ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying."-Book's opening monologue.

Okay, thought I'd see if there was any interest in a possible game based on the TV series Firefly, and the movie Serenity.  It would take place sometime between where the series left off, and before the movie.  It would revolve around the exploits of the captain and crew of another Firefly class transport ship, in a universe that mixes the Old West with spaceships and other high tech.  No aliens, sorry.

For those unfamiliar with the Firefly universe, here is link that will hopefully answer some questions:
http://www.fireflywiki.org/Firefly/BlueSun

If you don't know the system, that is fine, I will try to help you understand it.  If interested, let me know.

If you want in, your in.  I would like for the captain to be a PC.  May have a few positions be run by NPCs, but we will see about that.

Do you know anything about the Serenity rules?  Have no problems teaching the rules, would just like to know who is going to need help, and how much.

Or what kind of position you would want?  Captain, pilot, mechanic, hired gun, other?

Unfortunately.. all I know from the Serenity universe is watching a couple of the Firefly shows and watching the movie.. so I'm pretty inexperienced, and my lack of any recent RP at all kind combined with that would make me a perfect candidate for my favorite archetype, the hired gun.

I don't know the rules but I've seen the movies and tv series.  Someone proposed one and then dropped it.  I wouldn't mind being an engineer/mechanic.

As I may have said, it will be a new ship and crew.  Knowledge of the series is helpful, but not necessary.  And I will help as best I can with the rules.  But a mechanic and hired gun are fine.

Elvi:  Have any idea of what kind a character you would want to play?

Astalinnon:  Yes, you may want to hide those things, never know what an Alliance patrol may think of them.   :)

Well, the crew in the series was Malcolm Reynolds (ex soldier, now captain of the Serenity), Zoe (another soldier who served under Mal in the war, now first mate), Wash (sarcastic pilot and Zoe's husband), Jayne (a greedy merc who joined looking for a better deal), Kaylee (ship's mechanic, very cheerful).  They pick up several passengers in the first episode, Book (preacher with a hidden past), Simon (doctor, a fugitive since he broke his sister out of some Alliance academy), and River (the sister, also a fugitive, who the academy experimented on.)  And then there is Inara, the companion, who is sort of the ambassador, helping to make things look "respectful."

Maybe one of those characters might give you an idea?  But, for a list:

Captain:  someone in charge.
Hired guns/deckcrew:  Muscle in case things go badly.  As well as for loading and unloading cargo.
Mechanic:  To fix the ship.
Pilot:  Fly the ship.
Medic:  To fix the crew when they get shot up.  Its a dangerous 'verse after all.

JUst some ideas, if you want to play something else, let me know.

The two main religions in the 'verse are Budhism and Christianity (in various forms).  Book was a Christian preacher.  Other religions are around, but those are the are the main two.  Superstitions, don't think they went into very much, but sure, I would imagine they would be there.

And I could fit around any of those, really, lets see what others fancy and I'll fit in somewhere?

Think we have a mechanic, and a hired gun, but can always use more than one hired gun.  When things go south, and the lead starts flying, it is always nice to have more than one person who knows how to shoot.  And the more bodies mean the bad guys have more people to shoot at than just you.   :)

Thought I had answered those, but guess not.  Set after the last episode, "Objects in Space," and before the movie.  Recall there was supposed to be an eight month gap between the two.  I doubt y'all would run into the Serenity crew, but it may happen.  The events in the movie may or may not happen, just depends.

System.  The Serenity RPG, put out by Margaret Weis Productions.  Don't worry, I will try to guide everyone thru it.  It is a fairly easy system to learn.

First Companions are high high high end courtesans not diplomats and I'd love to be one.

As for religion its seems very eclectic but Shepherds are all well respected- seems to me make one up off a Earth religion as a base. Or get creative.  ;)

As far as I could tell there are not singular major religion but there was little on the Core Systems I would think a Catholic Orthodox like faith is likely around in some form.

If you can help me I would like to play a Companion, don't know the rules though at all since its a minor system. I was thinking the daughter of a Bishop or some other major core worlds person that happened to take up the Companion trade. Is legal and a perfectly acceptable carreer for a woman. Might also be working for Alliance Intelligence  ;).

Could be fun.

The RPG mentions that the two major religions are Budhism and Christianity.  Many other religions are out there as well.  I did say that Inara was something of an ambassador, mainly because she opens doors to Mal and comapny with people in high society that would otherwise be closed to them.

And yes, it is acceptable for a woman to become a Companion.  Although it is something that would take many years of training.  Not so sure about a Companion working for Alliance Intelligence.  I could she her having friends there, but not actually being in Alliance Intelligence?

Hadn't give too much thought yet as to specifics, but,

Maybe a browncoat, some sort of security for the ship maybe.

or

A Civillian on the run, paying for passage somewhere.

Either way would have a much deeper bacground then that of course, but those are the general thoughts I have atm.  :)

Well in the TV series a Companion was a seductress and worked with criminals. I could see one being brought into Alliance Intelligence they have lots and lots of skills, social connections and the like. Hell Mata Hari in thee real world was a seductress and spy would be no different. I figure she would just collect information and then meet a client that happened to be her contact to pass it on. And I must point out all Companions go to a school for that starting young not the sex right away but Inara in the show could pilot shuttles, fence with rapiers, knew martial arts, etiquette, heraldry, customs, psychology, art, culture and religion not to mention skills in sexual services. And I suspect there were some male ones although less common would assume a few were. So the Alliance wouldn't relish getting one on the payroll I think they would jump at it. I'm not sure but Inara spent several years at a Companion School so I would think it would be at least 4 years starting maybe at 16 or 17 with sex training later on.

And for her there are benefits like if the crew get into hot water with the military she would have ample safety, allies in high places and the like. Plus the role-playing opportunities.  ;)

As for someone on the run it depends on from what. If they are highly sought like the doctor and runaway psionic then yep. If a criminal she might keep tabs on him or her but maybe because she was ordered to get the bigger fish- example if they are terrorists maybe the bosses want to catch more so she is to stay low key.

I also considered making her anti-unification and on the outer rim becasue she pissed off a few people too high up the food chain in the Alliance so relocated- not a criminal but out of favor.

I don't think a Companion would work for Alliance Intelligence.  I could see them having friends there, or contacts, but being part of it, no.  Would think that Companions would keep confidentiality of their clients, and one turning out to be passing secrets on would quickly find themselves kicked out of the Guild once it becomes known.  The last thing the Companion's Guild could afford was the scandal that they could not or would not keep anything a client may have told them secret.  According to Inara, "Companions don't kiss and tell."  If it got out that Companions couldn't be trusted, think they would be out of business in short order.

One idea, maybe your character did pass along secrets to Intelligence, and got caught, and was kicked out of the Guild.  She might be out, on the frontier worlds, trying to make a living?  Doing odd favors for her Intel contact from time to time?

And yes, there are male Companions.  In one of the deleted scenes for Serenity, as Inara is instructing students, there are many girls kneeling and watching, also, several men.  I would guess they are also male Companions.  The RPG gives stats for male NPC Companions (which are the same as the female NPC Companions).

Good points then I'll favor the Companion plying her trade in the frontier likely opposing Unification and from a strong military family on maybe the big military planet of the Alliance must have one with academies, training camps, fleet operations and the like. So clearly felt kind of unwelcome.  ;)

I will do that I figure a Companion to be that is just out of favor with her target customers- I'll make her father a Admiral and war hero during the Unification War with the rest of the family well-connected some prominant spouses, maybe a Senator and a few Lobbyists for military interests so being against the war would make her have to find other work locations.

Give her a big reason to be in the frontier areas of the Alliance.

I can see that.  Some of those governors appointed to rule the conquered Rim planets would probably be as big supporters of the war as much of her family was.  But some, probably lower level leaders, left there because they were thought to be "politically reliable," might be opposed to the Alliance, or at least unhappy with its heavy handed ways.

And don't forget, she will have to head for the Central planets at least once a year, for her phyiscal, if nothing else.

Well she's not a criminal and may be out of favor with her family she is loyal to the Alliance. To her it was just a matter of like the American Revolutionary War the English could have governed lightly and let the colonies levy taxes for the Crown and traded. That was her view let the rim colonies trade and pay taxes self-governed to a great degree and avoid a conflict. It was just a foolish move even though the Alliance won the long term political and public relations damage was very high.

She figures she was on the losing Dove position and that's that but no use being all huffy about it and she does love her family. She sure disagrees with them on this that doesn't mean she is not a loyal daughter.

I think I misunderstood.  I had thought she favored the Independents, maybe not with any actual aid, but in her arguements with the family.  But, she was anti-war than pro-Independents.  Okay.  Think I would still create some... tensions with the more hard-line members of her family, but not to the point the family would disown her.  At least, most of them.

Will try to get some stuff up in the morning about character generation.  How about sounding off, let me know who is still interested, and what positions you want.

Here is a list of the skills, Assets (things that give your character an edge over those around you), and Complications (which make life more.... interesting).  Take a look, see if anything strikes your fancy.

Concept: Registered Companion

TRAITS
Assets-
Allure (Major)
Registered Companion (Minor)
Sweet and Cheerful (Minor)

Complications
Allergy: Alcohol (Minor) not sure here I have extra points from taking attributes so just need one for flavor

All six attributes at D8. (went for a very well rounded person that would be above-average)

Skills am not sure about how do they work when buying them? I take it I get one general rating in a skill like Animal Handling and can take Ride as a specialty under that, A Companion is likely to dabble all over and have some strong areas so I have to understand the rules here.

Any ideas on skills I figure Influence is big but she should have other skills what does a normal companion NPC have I would think some area of special interest to make her more appealing as a escort, some self-defense skills and hobbies I was thinking of this spread-

4 major groups at D6 [24 pts.]
8 minor groups at D4 [32 pts.]
Influence D6 [6 pts.]
~ one specialty @ D12
~ three specialties @ D8

Minor groups things like Artistry, Knowledge and the like to cover her variety of minor areas a Companion might be expected to have some skill in.

Major groups her more impressive areas of education like Martial Arts, Pilot, Technical Engineer and Athletics maybe????

-Jason is extremely superstitious, and follows many sorts of rituals and carries around charms and such to ward off bad luck, and to keep the good.
Traumatic Flashes (Minor)
-Jason has occassional traumatic flashes to parts of his life that he doesn't talk about, though for the most part, it occurs around water.

I'm uncertain about some of the traits.  What is Two-fisted, Things (Don't) Go Smooth, Cortex Specter, Ego Signature and is that supposed to be Chip On the Shoulder?

I would still like to be a mechanic.

Wow, didn't think y'all would go ahead and get started on creating characters.  Just wanted you to look the lists of Traits and Skills over, see what struck your fancy.

Real quick explanations for those traits;
Two fisted- You can use either hand equally well, and incur no off-hand penalty.
Things Go Smooth- Once per session, you can reroll any action, except for Botches (bad thing, happens when all the die rolled are a 1.)  As a Major trait, you can make 2 rerolls, including Botches.
Things Don't Go Smooth- Bad luck follows you around.  Once per session, the GM can make you reroll an action, and take the lowest roll.  As a Major trait, the GM can make you reroll 2 actions.
Ego Signature- You consistently leave some sort of clue at the scene of your crimes.  It doesn't have to be obvious, or lead directly back to you, but it could lead someone to you, or be used to frame you.
Chip on the Shoulder- You can't walk away from an insult or a taunt.  You have a -2 step penalty in any peacebale socail actions with even a hint of tension.  As a Major trait, any time you suffer Wound damage, you go completely beserk, concentrating on taking down the guy who hurt you.
Cortex Specter- As a minor trait, the only record of your existance is your birth records.  As a Major trait, there are NO records of your existance.  Note, it can be a problem, credit could be denied, you might not be allowed to check in the emergency ward at an Aliiance hospital, and if the Alliance arrests you, just remember, you don't exist.

Am not sure if I or the website explained how Skill step bonuses and penalties worked.  The progression starts at d2, then d4, then d6, on up to d12, then d12+d2, then d12+d4, and so on.  If there was a Skill Step bonus of 2, and you have a d6 normally, it would become a d10.  And if there was a penalty of 2, that d6 would become a d2.

Mindhazingsquid, I would suggest the Talented Asset.  It gives a skill bonus of 2 to a skill specialty.  As a Major trait, improving the skill after play starts is cheaper.

Natalie, I might suggest getting the Memorable Complication, instead of the Alcohol Allergy.  It makes you stand out in a crowd, but it could be for good looks just as much for bad.  The book versions of both Zoe and Inara had it for that reason.  River had it as well, but that was more for her tendency to go barefoot, mood swings, and unpredicticable behavior.

Astalinnon, you might want to get Athletics-Dodge.  Very helpful to get out of the way when someone points a gun at you.  PMing me your backstory is fine.  And my math may be wrong, but think you still have 4 points left in attributes.  I might suggest buying up Agility.  That would be the Attribute used with most guns.

Natalie, looks good, but I haven't done the math yet.  Will do so first chance I get.  My appearance here might be a little scarce for the next day or so, seem to be having a lot of bad weather here.

Just wondering, is Saranii lesbian?  I seem to recall seeing that in your ons and offs.  Would think the number of bi and lesbian clients might be a bit limited out in the Rim.  I am not saying you can't, just not sure of her client base.  *Hopes that doesn't sound to bad or judgemental.*

Oh, on another note, Intitative would be the Agility die and Alertness die (in Saranii's case, D8+D8), not a straight 16.  Thought I'd pass that along. Sorry for the confusion.  The Life Points are fine.

Ok I gave her Moneyed Individual she works to keep busy, she likes it and to keep her out of the core systems not that she needs it with her trust fund and share of family income sources or something.

For fun I gave her GOOD NAME figuring her family during the war were respectable and fair soldiers and treated the Brown Coats well and in doing her service made the Alliance good list as heroes adding also good political figures and honest dealings in business. Respected on all sides.

For fun gave her LOYALTY to her family and PREJUDICE against them basically she has the good name, is loyal to them as a personal obligation but is not fond of them due to them being HAWKS for unification. Should make for fun role-playing.

I'm not sure of the numbers I made changes as I went along but they should be ok I hope.

Natalie, Think you went 4 points over in Attributes and Traits.  I might suggest dropping Strength down to a D6, and maybe another attribute, or maybe dropping the Good name.  It seems to me it would apply to you, to something you did, not what your family might have done.  Maybe dropping Good Name down to a minor asset, and the Strength to a D6?

BTW, the Moneyed Individual means more money at start (4,500 credits in her case) as well as a trust fund that can be dipped into once per session.

Astalinnon:  Ouch.  Looks good, so far, he will be a nasty fighter.  Agility plus weapon skill to make an attack.  D12+D12+D4 when using an assault rifle.  Ouch.

No problem.  Yes, Steady Calm is the opposite of Combat Paralysis.

For the others, will try to get a more detailed description up later, time is short for me now.

Mechanincal Empathy-  You can tell what is wrong with a piece of machinery, and get a bonus to you skill roll to fix it.  Can get expensive, will cost you Plot Points to use.
Sweet and Cheerful-  You are a ray of sunshine in a cold and lonely verse.  Give a bonus in social interactions.
Math Wiz-  You don't need a calculator to figure out the umpeenth decimal point of pi.
Walking Timepiece-  You know what time it is, and how much time has passed since a certain event. If you were told to wait 10 minutes before doing something, you will know when that 10 minutes is up without the use of a watch.
Highly Educated-  Lots of book learning, gives a bonus to Knowledge skills.
Soft-  You feel pain more easily than others.  You if were actually wounded, you would have to roll to keep from wailing and carrying on.
Scrawny-  You're skinny.  You would take a penalty to Strength based Athletic skills and in social interactions where physical fitness might be an issue.

MAX its not like my character NEEDS the money she is a Companion because she likes it and to keep busy plus gives her more contacts. And its better to say she works as a Registered Companion over "I just sit around and live off my familys money doing nothing". LOL

And the money is still good.  ;)

A SYBIAN is a sexual toy with various dildo attachments and setting a woman can mount, its big and rests on the floor or other sturdy surface and has multiple settings and vibrates the whole pelvis of the woman. Yes its pricey but she can afford one. Of course a more modern version. Can you say a guarenteed orgasm though and is very comfortable one can add pillows for the knees and move around on it as it suits the woman!

Plus it can be useful for her work a deductable expense.

*Just wonders what a Companions deduction's worksheet for their tax form would look like.*

So, far, the character's look good.  We are working on a pilot, we have a mechanic, and Companion, and a hired gun.  And, if I am not mistaken, a doctor?

Okay, now maybe a little backstory, how y'all all fit together.  I was thinking something like this.  Saranii, has headed out towards the Rim to get away fom the Core worlds and away from her family.  Stopping at Persophone (sp?), she acquires a Firefly to take her around to meet clients.  That way, she can maintain her independence, instead of working for someone else by shipping out on a liner.

Having acquired said ship, she gets a crew, pilot, mechanic, to help run the ship, a gun man to keep everyone safe.  The Rim can be dangerous, or so she has heard.  Pirates, thieves, cutthroats, even those mythical Reavers.

The Firefly would look alot like Serenity, including a passanger dorm and medical bay (which are not standard, or so I take it from my reading on Fireflys.  Serenity served as a medical ship before being sold off as surplus after the war).  One thought, was that Saranii would let the crew carry cargo and passengers as long as it did not interfere with her plans.  Is this okay with everyone?

Oh, I may include an NPC or two on the ship.  Will decide what role (extra gunman, or just general crew member) later.  They would be there mostly as backup, to help round up the crew, and in case someone wants to join the game, and we are in the middle of something.  I have never been fond of, "You are wandering thru the dungeon, and you turn the corner, and there is so-and-so's character."  Once the group was in a place I could add the newbie, they would bring in their own character.

One other question, name of the ship?  Had thought SYBIAN was, but now, not so sure.

Note she will work with the captain all she need to know is WHERE they are going with enough lead time to put the importmation on the Cotex Guild Net sp clients will know she is available. Odds are she let it out many months ago she was going to be working in the Rim so interested parties can keep tabs. Remember money for her is not a biggy her free tap into her trust will pay for the lease of the shuttle and incidentals like her board. And she is willing to help the captain a Companion with Friends in High Places, a Good Name and all can drop his name to see if anyone is interested in hring the ship. So he may find cutting her a deal on the lease will be great for business later on.  ;D

And she would like to get a pool of regular clients going for quality over quantity- and good role-playing.

Re: Serenity/Firefly game?
« Reply #71 on: April 28, 2006, 08:42:13 AM »
Okay, just a quick primer on the game mechanics.

As I said before, Serenity uses dice steps.  They start a D2, then go to a D4, then D6, then D8, then D10, then D10+D2, then D12+D4, and so on.  Sometimes you will get a step bonus (or penalty).  That will increase the die you roll by that much.  A bonus of one would increase a D6 to a D8 (and a penalty would decrease it to a D4).  A two step bonus would increase the D6 to a D10 (and a two step penalty would drop it to a D2).  A D12 with a step bonus of one would increase it to D12+D2.  And so on.

Most actions will roll an Attribute die and skill die, and add the results together.  An example, someone with an Agility of D8, and Guns of D6, were to shoot at someone, they would roll D8, and a D6, and add the results together.  The number you are trying to beat is the difficulty number, and starts at 3 (Easy), and goes up by 4.  Average (7), Hard (11), Formidable (15), Heroic (19), Incredible (23), Ridiculous (27), and Impossible (31).  If you beat the difficulty by 7 or more, you get an Extra Success (for example, causing someone even more hurt on an attack roll).  Note, if all the die you roll come up 1's, that is a Botch, and can really hurt (don't Botch when using a hand grenade).

Complex Actions.  Here, the numbers you need to beat will be higher, but you keep a running total.  Each time you roll, a certain amount of time passes, when your rolls have beaten the number needed, you suceed.

Plot Points.  These are your way to change the story in so way to your benefit.  Everyone will start with 6 Plot Points.  You can have at most 12 Points.  Anything over 12 gets turned into Advancement Points.  They can be used to increase the amount of die you roll.  1 Point spent would let you roll a d2, 2 Points, a D4, 3, a D6, 4, a D8, 5, a D10, 6, a d12, 7, d12+D2, and up to 12 to get a D12+D12.  In order to get the extra die, you have to declare the use of Plot Points before you roll.  You can spend Plot Points to increase your roll after the die is tossed, but then it is a straight 1 Point to increase the roll by 1, but you can spend as many Points as you can afford.

You can also use Plot Points to decrease the damage you take.  Spend a number of Points like you were getting a die roll, say 3 to get a D6, then roll, and deduct that much damage from what you have just taken.  As a further example, you were just hit for 2 Wounds and 2 Stun, and you rolled a 3, you would not take the Wounds, and only take a Stun.  If you rolled a 4, you wouldn't take any damage, and a 5 or 6, no damage, but the rest is lost.  It only effects the damage you have just taken.

You can also use Plot Points to affect the story.  The greater the impact, the more it costs.

Some Assets may require the use of Plot Points.  Mechanical Empathy, for example, will cost points, the number depending on just how bad the problem is.  Some of the Major versions of Assets would give a bonus of 2 to any points spent.  If you spent 3 Plot Points, and had Major Allure, it would be as you had spent 5.

Another use for Plot Points is to improve your character, buy up Skills, get new ones, increase Attributes, maybe buy off a Complication.  As said, any after 12 become Advancement Points, to be used to improve your character.  Also, if you have more than 6 Plot Points after a session (adventure), the extra become Advancement Points.

Life Points.  This is how much damage you can take.  When you have taken a number of Wounds equal to your Life Points, better hope the will is up to date.  If you take Stun equal to your Life Points, you are out cold.

One final point.  In combat, if you hit someone, the more you exceede the number you needed, the more damage you do, before you see what damage your weapon does.

Will go into more detail about combat later, but hope this gives some idea of how the game works.  Any questions, feel free to ask.

At the moment, we don't really have a Captain.  That was why I suggested that Saranii be the one to buy the ship.  I was thinking that she bought the ship to transport her around, and maybe lets the crew take on cargo and passengers as part of their salaries.

Had thought she would want to make her home, or at least, her business, in one of the shuttles, that way she can meet clients while the ship is doing something else.

Maybe one of the others will be Captain.  As I said, I would prefer the Captain to be a player, maybe have one or two NPCs to fill out the crew.  If no one else wants the job, I guess the Captain could be an NPC.  We will see.

Oh well that would be a nice investment but she would need a merchant to handle the business end of the ship but if they will make sure the ship is maintained, kept in good repair and doesn't cost her any extra they can divide up the profits giving her a normal share. But in that case they work around her schedule.

But there has to be a Captain she may be the ship owner but she is not exactly merchant captain material.  ;)

So we need someone that can do that she is likely to go with the merchant business like I said as a Companion in the rim even if taking only women and couples work should come along enough. The profession is rare out that far.

So we need a player to do the trading and such. But if she owns the ship it should be easier for her to use her connections and such to get work for the crew.

True.  I do have a couple of ideas for a Captain.  One something like the Captain that I was going to use in your game.  Another, would be a Core world dandy, but one deadly with the sword, maybe a little gun skill.  But not so sure how he might take to having a Companion on board.

If I do end up running the Captain, it would be his ship.  He would work with the Companion, so she could keep her schedule.  I am not saying one of the others can't be Captain, just doesn't seem like anyone wants the job.

On another note, would there be any objections if I were to run the game in the Light, Normal section?  Not to sure how well I could run a female on female scene.

Well, the idea was to play Aetherton Wing (from "Shinding").  Had the thought that he had a bad run of business luck since his duel with Mal, and put all the blame on his misfortune on Mal, and set out to even the score.  Maybe over the course of the campaign, mellowing out a bit, becoming something of a good guy.  But, probably not ever running across Mal.

Think he could be charming when he wanted to be.  But, probably not to someone who was "beneath" him.  I had thought it might be interesting, to see if he might change as he was exposed to the... rough side of life.

The other idea was a Alliance veteran, who did some nasty things during the war.  Now, is trying to leave that behind, or perhaps, redeem himself.

Let's see if we get a Captain yet.  So, how is the doctor coming along?  Need any help, just let me know.

Wing may not think a Companion beneath him, doubt he has much good feeling towards Companions, as least after Shindig.  But, will probably use the other idea, the war veteran.  He wouldn't have much against a Companion.

As for starting, was still waiting on a couple of people to get me their characters.  Had planned to run a short combat, so every could see how the system plays, let people make any final changes in their characters, and then start the game.

1)  What did your character do during the War?  Which side was he or she on, if any?  Was it voluntary, or were they drafted?  Did you lose anyone you cared about?
She was on the main military planet of the Alliance Mars, at the small Guild Academy on the orbiting pleasure station Aphrodesia, run by The Guild for the pleasure of the fleet. She was kind of on the Alliance side but before the war an outspoken DOVE even joining in a huge public demonstration at the Alliance capital. She like a vocal minority thought letting the rim planets have some constitutional independance and focus on trade- but going to war was a drastic step. She was arrested it was only the intervention of her family and her mother a retired Companion that kept her out of a reform colony. During the war she still was on the DOVE camp and rather outspoken so the family got her into a Guild Academy where their daughter coud stay out of trouble. During the war she lost a sister and a brother suring the war the former an Alliance Intelligence agent that died taking out a general for the Brown Coats.

2)  What are you hobbies?  How do you pass the time away?
As a Companion she has many interests Art, Music (enjoys playing the guitar and singing), Reading and Athletics. A sound mind and a sound body are important to her.

3)  What kind of first impression do you think you make?
Well she is a Companion she is a force of feminine power that is regal and beautiful so acts the part. She does tend to dress well and is made up flawlessly. She is what everyone expects in a Companion and she is proud of that.

4)  Where were you born?  How did you wind up on Persephone?
Mars, on one of the smaller towns common with the highest ranking military families and political types. She did spend some time on Earth in China for her early education and then to a private academy for her middle education in the Pacific NW for women only in both cases. She came to Persephone after joining the new Guild House Nova Ascendant focusing in the rim that actively recruited any young Companion they could. A new "clique" in The Guild and newly chartered they are out to claim turf no one else wants right now. Proudly wear the Guild Pin a Nova Star of Silver on a Red Back- on the edge four gems a diamond, opal, jade and ruby representing the four founding Companions. The House HQ is on Persephone likely the fanciest building on the planet. Rumors are they plan an academy here at some point to train more rustic Companions but right now that's being fought by the major Guild Houses especially House Venusia the most powerful and prestigious dominating the Sol Sector (Earth and the planets).

5)  Describe your quarters?  Are there pictures or other mementos on the walls, desk, whatever?  If so, what?  Also, where do you hide any valuables or illegal pieces of equipment from prying eyes.
She lives on the shuttle made up as a living quarters and holy place for her work with the main feature a large bed where the top rises and underneath a hot bath with its own filters and recycling system, over that a mirror. The bed is a four poster bed with sheer silk curtains otherwise. Overall the place has an alter, a Roman-style couch, bed, work station to make appointments, closet and lots of odds and ends. She has a small safe hidden under the alter build into the floor small but that's where she keeps her valuables hidden. In this case some fine jewelry.

After reading about Companions in the link I redid her downgraded her combat skills but she did have some self-defense training kind of powder-puff combat and upgraded Linguistics since they seem to push the softer skills. She is trained to pilot a little and some hands-on skills for working on shuttles systems in a pinch. But I tried to emmulate a young Copmpanion just out of one of The Guild academies.

I came up with some Companion rules if you like them we can talk about using them.:

1. Do not fall in love. Though the companion may find him or herself wanting for the love of another the potential for it to affect their commitment to the job and guild can be great.

2. Do not interfere with a relationship. If it is found that the client is calling a Companion out of infidelity the client must be denied service and reported to the guild. Only if both the client and spouse are in agreement to the call for a Companions services may the Companion accept.

3. If a client cannot pay for the services of the Companion they are obligated to the Companion until such a time as the debt is settled.

4. The Companion may refuse service to a client for any reason, at any time; even if service was previously agreed upon. If services have been payed then the payment must be returned. A report must be filed with the guild with the reason the service was denied.

5. Anyone wishing to petition for a Companions services must be registered with the Guild as a client. Once accepted, the client must then submit a request each time service is desired from a Companion. [Would guarentee that the client could pay and that Rule 2 is generally not going to be a problem.]

6. A Companion chooses his or her clients. A client may request a Companion, but there is no guarantee that the Companion will choose the client.

7. Anything shared with a Companion is priveledged information. A Companion may not be asked to divulge any information shared while with a client. [We may allow this under a Court Order if approved by The Guild- so maybe in cases of treason or High Crimes against the Alliance but would generally be shielded like a cleric in confession for other situations.]

Also I was thinking that there should be Guild benefits such as legal support and the like after all they are a powerful organization in the 'verse and should get a solid 25% share of the Companion fees. But would have benefits like legal protection for her practicing her trade, support and access to clients that are on the Guild client list. Remember in that one episode Inara pretty much was going to have that asshole black listed so Companions clearly have serious power to screw up a clients good standing. Also maybe we could also add in different Houses within The Guild also one upstart one that is exclusively sending members to the rim and others established in the Core Worlds all loyal to The Guild but having some extra clout in areas like one might have Earth locked down likely the oldest and most powerful. Another might favor a certain world or sector. Another might have people working on Luxury Liners and space stations devoted to pleasure. Hers would be going where no Companion has gone before but where the future is so she would be active at securing markets and making a name for herself.

Just some role-playing ideas.

Think you have 4 points to spend on Attributes.  As for the rules, they look good.  The only one I don't see is number 3.  Don't think a Companion would take a client that couldn't pay.  As for how much they would charge, I think it would be up to the Companion.

As a side note, if the Guild finds out someone has a Lovebot, they are immediately black listed.

RogueJedi, was awaiting a response from my last PM.  Did the Attributes look okay?

My character is cagey if she had a woman that couldn't afford more than the Guild cut she would likely take her for an indentured debt, debts are power and woman in a good position could be useful if that debt is kept in ones pocket for the right time. True its unlikely most payments would very likely go through the Guild after all they register clients as acceptable and likely have a base fee they expect, tips and gifts would be extra. I don't think it matters anyone that could afford her would have the money and access to The Guild information net so I will keep that off the game threads. I'll assume they pay her and it would sting the purse a bit. Companions are not inexpensive by far.

Remember payment does not have to be in credits I'm sure The Guild would not mind a client owing it favors through a Companion- its still a political faction and a very powerful one it didn't get there being nice.  ;)

You are right there, am sure the Guild wouldn't mind a client or two owing them favors.  That could be useful.  Also think they might be a little antsy if a Companion had to many clients owing them money.  Might think the Companion was taking on too many charity cases.

I never said it was common I would thing The Guild would favor normal methods like Political Action Committees and Lobbiests, Financing Politicians and other methods most powerful groups would use. She likely wouldn't unless the client was a regular where she could trust the debt would be paid back.

And I'm sure The Guild has a minimum fee they are a business and need a certain amount of money to guarentee the Companions are not going cheap without a permission from The Guild or a Guild Request to the Companion. Like giving her as a present to a Senator for some key vote.  ;)

Think of them as an escort service you are going to pay a certain amount no matter what and the Companion can ask more in negotiation with the client.

But Inara in that one episode had the son of that Colony leader help her as a favor get Serenity safely off the planet so their influence tends to be more subtle and sweet.

Don't think the son of the magistrate helping to lift the landlock had anything to do with Inara's payment.  I am sure that it was the magistrate who paid Inara's fee.  Think she sensed a little rebellious streak in the son, and nudged him to lift the land lock.

Am sending off a request for a game now.

A quick character quiz.  Feel free to answer it however you want, and either here of in PM, if there is something you don't want out in the open.  I will give one Plot Point per question answered.

1)  What did your character do during the War?  Which side was he or she on, if any?  Was it voluntary, or were they drafted?  Did you lose anyone you cared about?

2)  What are you hobbies?  How do you pass the time away?

3)  What kind of first impression do you think you make?

4)  Where were you born?  How did you wind up on Persephone?

5)  Describe your quarters?  Are there pictures or other mementos on the walls, desk, whatever?  If so, what?  Also, where do you hide any valuables or illegal pieces of equipment from prying eyes.

Ariel in the large green city of Janishia home to the most powerful families in the Alliance and most with service records in the military going back many generations besides hands in trade and politics mostly older members retired from military officer duty. She came to Persephone after joining the new Guild House Nova Ascendant focusing in the rim that actively recruited any young Companion they could. Also set up a sleeping area for an indentured servant when she takes one on.

ooc:
I took some liberties and made her a member of an upstart House in The Guild one moving to consolidate the Rim business for its members over the older houses- while the getting is good. After all territory in the Core Worlds is pretty well all claimed its the final frontier for some younger ambitious members.  ;D

Just some clique' roleplaying, The Guild comes first after all to any Companion but that does not mean factions don't exist.

1)  What did your character do during the War?  Which side was he or she on, if any?  Was it voluntary, or were they drafted?  Did you lose anyone you cared about?

Jason stayed out of the war until the last two years, when he first really started getting into the mercenary business. He worked under a rather well known gun runner, John Betrix, who supplied many of the rim planets with many, many weapons. Jason voluntarily started working for him, and was happy about it even after the war ended. Shortly afterwards, John Betrix was killed in a trade that was indirectly related to the war.

2)  What are you hobbies?  How do you pass the time away?

Jason loves to keep in shape. He loves any sort of athletics, running and weight lifting especially, and spends a good portion of his time doing that. At the same time, his childhood love of fantasy and virtual reality worlds have stayed with him, and can often be found playing with a virtual reality gaming device he has with him.

3)  What kind of first impression do you think you make?

Jason certainly is friendly and light hearted to those he just meets. While he is rather intimidating, for the most part, he makes a kind first impression.

4)  Where were you born?  How did you wind up on Persephone?

Jason was born on Sihnon originally, though he won't often talk about it. He wound up on Persephone after a few months of looking for jobs after John Betrix was killed. Here, he hopes to find any way to earn a little money, since things are starting to get a little tight.

5)  Describe your quarters?  Are there pictures or other mementos on the walls, desk, whatever?  If so, what?  Also, where do you hide any valuables or illegal pieces of equipment from prying eyes.

Jason's quarters aren't particularly memorable... He has a compact set of weights and a corner of his room cleared out to use them in, on the opposite side of his perpetually unkempt bed. The bed is far from ornate, but it does look very comfortable and sturdy, the equivalent of a queen sized bed, with only a single pillow and a large, comfortable looking blanket adorning it. At the foot of the bed, there is a footlocker which acts as a dresser for the mercenary. The only thing on the walls that can even be thought of as a decoration is a mirror on the wall, and a very, very old picture of five people: one looking almost like Jason but much younger, a younger boy and a younger girl, as well as two distinguished looking parent figures. As for weaponry, Jason's pistol is kept in his footlocker and his knife is kept lying on a makeshift shelf on one of the walls, neither of which are particularly hidden. However, there is a loose panel in the room in which he stores his assault rifle, a copious amount of ammunition and body armor, as well as whatever else he may need to hide.

Rumors are they plan an academy here at some point to train more rustic Companions but right now that's being fought by the major Guild Houses especially House Venusia the most powerful and prestigious dominating the Sol Sector (Earth and the planets). But the territory is ripe for their House to find a nitche in The Guild and no one else seems to care right now.

Uhm, my take, and the way the RPG seems to suggest, Earth-That-Was, was abandonned, mankind setting out of huge ships, using a mix of generational crews as well as colonists in suspended animation, to reach a new solar systems.  With dozens of planets ripe for terraforming and colonization.  The Core planets (Londinium, Sihnon, Osiris, Ariel, and Bernadette) were settled first, and would form the basis of the Alliance, followed by the Border planets (Persephone, Boros, Hera to name a few), and then the Rim worlds (most of the rest of the ones seen in the series) which had been lightly settled when the War started.  Londinium is the political capital of the Alliance, while Sihnon has many business interests headquarted there, (including the main Guild training house).

All of these planets are in one system.  Maybe a few systems real close together.  But, there is little FTL in Serenity.  And any trip to Earth would take many, many years.

As for the idea of the various Guild houses, that is fine.  Hadn't thought of it, but it works.

And, the link for the game:

Not much to see at the moment, hope to have more up soon.

Sure, there is room.  What kind of character do you want to play?

As said, could use a Captain.  Had an idea for an NPC Captain, but would prefer it to be a PC.  Think we have a doc, mechanic, and a pilot.  Also have a hired gun, but can always use another.  Can never have enough people with guns.  :)

There is a link somewhere in this thread that shows an outline of character generation, look it over, and I will try to answer any questions.

Will try to get some more info up on game mechanics in the morning.  Am still waiting to get some of the characters finished.  Then, a quick combat, so everyone can see how that works, and I will let people have one last chance to modify their characters, then away we go.

I feel I should mention, that while I have been playing RPGs for a long time, my experience with GMing is limited.  Hope I run a game everyone will like, but just wanted to get that out.

At first glance she appears to be a skinny girl.  She has only very basic understanding of the 'verse and the past few hundred years.  While technically she is several hundred years old she's in her twenties both physically and mentally.

4)  Where were you born?  How did you wind up on Persephone?
She was born on Earth!  Anchorage, Alaska to be exact.  When she graduated from school, with her technological aptitude she was a shoe-in at MIT where she began a course of robotics engineering.  After two years she heard about a colony expedition.  She applied and was accepted considering she was at her prime and was passing her classes with flying colours.
On the ship personal cargo was limited.  She took family pictures and some texts specially made on plastic pages for longevity.  The destination a sun called HD 28185.  While it hasn't technically got an earth-like planet it does have a planet with an earth-like moon.  The planet itself was a water-based jovian planet.
Due to the distance of the planet the colony ship was part cryogenic and part generational.  The plan was to have several crews that would take turns in suspended animation that would also bear children.  However there was a problem.
It is uncertain how it happend but the first crew was lost, leaving the ship with only it's computer guidance and no way to repair any problems.  When it was next found it was several hundred years later.  Most of the people, colonists and crew alike, did not make the trip.  It had been sucked into a desintigrating orbit around an uninhabitable planet with no value.  It was only found by chance by a Unified Reclamation contract, salvage ship.
The ship saved who they could and salvaged what they could and brought it to UR.  While she was being brought up to date.  While being brought to speed she began playing around with things she found.  Taking apart and putting back together anything she found.  After finding some of the things she had tinkered with and finding some of them working better than before she was dumped into the UR research devision and basicly blackmailed into working for them.
After working for them for several years she devised a plan to escape.  Once she got out her small size allowed her to stow away on various ships until she was caught.
Deciding she was far enough away from UR and the allience she decided to let the ships know that she was there and join as a crew.

5)  Describe your quarters?  Are there pictures or other mementos on the walls, desk, whatever?  If so, what?  Also, where do you hide any valuables or illegal pieces of equipment from prying eyes.
At first her room looks like chaos.  Every surface, including her cot, is covered in gadgets, tools and doodads.  However on closer inspection the floor is completely bare leaving room on the floor to do things.  She has a few pictures in her room.  Pictures of her family and her closest friend all

You went 2 points over on Attributes, and 6 over on skills.  Other than that, looks good.

I double checked my numbers and I get 54 and 74 respectively for attributes/traits and skills.  Did you change the numbers and I missed it?

You are right.  Not sure what I was doing wrong, guess I added one skill twice or something.  Sorry.

But, it all looks good.

And yes, I am not an accountant.

Everybody is being so mean to me.   :'(

Anyway, hope to get the basics of combat typed up in the morning.  In addition to being so poor at math, I am also a slow typist.  Will have the equipment list up as soon as I figure out how to do charts and tables here.  If it is not up in the morning, I will try to get it up Saturday night/early Sunday morning.  When I am not working.

mindhazingsquid, if you haven't, go ahead and add Kara to the character's thread.

Am still waiting on getting the doctor character finished up.

To be honest, not really.  I have 4 characters in, am waiting on several other players to get me their characters.  If I don't hear from them soon, I might open it up for others.

Any idea what you might like to play?

Maybe. He'd have some skills that would be valuable for the crew, haven't decided on what yet. Probably pretty fast with the gun though.

I still have a couple of spots open for the game.  If anyone is interested, let me know.  Could use a doctor, but if you have another idea, let me know.
