This is a Buffy RPG game using the Buffy RPG Revised Core Rulebook, Monster Smackdown, Slayer's Handbook, and The Magic Box.  It is set in 1885, in the United States' 'Wild West.'  The setting will not be fully accurate (I reserve the right to take liberties due to my own ignorance, or just to make a better story).  It will, just by virtue of the setting, be somewhat politically incorrect.  It will be rated Nonconsensual-Exotic, and I do intend and expect Smut to be relatively common.

The game will start in a town know as Line's End, though the long term intent is to have it move around the region.  I mention this mostly as it could impact character creation, especially Occult Library.

I prefer, but won't require, that characters are female.  Non-humans may be allowed, but are not preferred and will be approved or rejected on a case by case basis.  Vampires as (good) PCs will not be allowed, if you want to play an evil Vampire in opposition to the group I might consider it.  I may run the Slayer as an NPC or just not have her present.  I won't write her off as a PC if someone is interested, but I will be extremely picky about the character and her player.

The intended posting rate is once or twice a week.

If interested, please post a brief (a paragraph or two) concept.

Setting
Line’s End had, for years, been nothing but a nameless collection of buildings in a remote corner of New Mexico.  It was notable only for the Missio Dominae Nostrae Aeternae Luvenis, an old Spanish Mission that had somehow managed to eke out an existence nearby for decades if not centuries.  The, false, rumour of gold brought an influx of settlers in the late 1860s.  Although no gold was ever discovered, though rumours of a lost Spanish treasure persisted, rich veins of silver and coal were enough to catch the interest of the Millerson Mining Company.  The company invested heavily to develop mining in the area, even going so far as to pay to bring a railroad line to the outskirts of the town.

Line’s End, in 1885, is not exactly thriving but is definitely surviving.  It has a population in the hundreds, though the vast majority are the male employees of the Millerson Mining Company.  Although most of the town’s buildings are crude at best, it does hold the Lucky Miner, the Lucky Lady, the Mission Hotel, Poe’s General Store, and the Flying Eagle Theatre.  Law is maintained by Sheriff Fitzwarin, while the town is lead by Mayor Beaumont, who is also the local head of the Millerson Mining Company.

Teaser

‘Ol Stub crouched in the shallow creek, the water lapping at his boots as he swirled a fistful of gravel around his pan.  His clothes were tattered, his pan dented, and his face that of a man who had spent too much of his life outdoors.  He was the last of the old timers, men who had come to the area with the first rumour of a gold rush, only to find starvation and disappointment.

As the gravel scraped across the pan, as the water and dirt gradually swished out, ‘Ol Stub felt his breath catch in his throat.  For the first time in decades, he saw the glint of gold.  Weathered and calloused fingers brushed through water, sand, and rocks in search of the errant nugget.  The sound of a branch cracking behind him ended his search as his head lifted.  His hand drifted towards the revolver at his belt as he twisted his head.

There was a new gang of bandits in the area but, like so many times before, ‘Ol Stub instead saw the flash of eyes reflecting the full moon.  An animal.  It was a welcome relief, still, he stood with pan in one hand and drew his revolver with the other.

“G't!”  He shouted, firing off a shot into the air.  The eyes vanished, and with a self-satisfied smirk, ‘Ol Stub returned his attention to the pan.  The crash of something large in the undergrowth lifted his head back up a moment later, his eyes widening as a massive bulk charged towards him.  He had only a moment to wonder what kind of beast he was facing as he swung his pistol around and fired off a single shot.  He may as well have been spitting into a hurricane, the beast didn’t even slow.

A single swipe of powerful claws nearly ripped his head from his shoulders, and he fell with a splash into the shallow creek.  Lifeless eyes settled on the pan he had been holding moments before, a small gold cross glinting in the sand and gravel.

Original Post
I was wondering if there was any interest in a Buffy RPG (using the system) set in the late 19th century?

I am thinking set in or around 1885, probably with the characters wandering around the west instead of located in a single city.  I would be allowing people to be either heroes or white hats (though only one slayer, and I'm not sure how to decide on a slayer).  My preference would be female characters, though I wouldn't require it.  I would probably not allow Vampires as player characters (unless as villains not associated with the main group, but I would have to think about how that would fit/work).

It would probably be rated NC-Exotic, with a high amount of smut.

The posting rate I would be aiming for (at least for myself) would be once or twice a week.

Is there enough interest that I should develop this further?

I am very interested. Keeping my eye on this for sure.

tentative interest.

Would something like a robot made from clockworks and other such steampunky nonsense be alright? (with a human veneer laid over and all)

LSWSjr

Been so long since I playtested these games, would love the chance to play them again :)

It would depend on what you came up with.  I won't refuse the idea outright, but would want to see a concept before I said yes or no.

LSWSjr

What about the Snake Folk from the Slayer's Handbook?

I lean no on the Snake Demons, I wasn't planning on using that plot and am not sure they'd be a good fit.

LSWSjr

Well keen to play regardless :)

As much as the race polotics of this erra is a severe turn off for me, would a native american girl be good?  She might possibly have some spiritual power that amounts to actual magic, but that's not nessicary.

I guess my first impulse, though, is that she's here as a result of a vision, or hunting the  murderer of a loved one, rather than walking in white man's teritory for more mundane reasons.

I'm not quite sure where you're setting this geographicaly, or how it matches up wtih the wars and the reservations, but maybe she's Blackfoot?

Native American is fine though might have some issues.  A vision or hunt would work.

I was trying to keep the exact location vague (due to limited knowledge of New Mexico), but probably somewhere near the current Gila National Forest area.  I can't find good maps of Native American territory, but it looks like Pueblo, Mogollon, Apache, and maybe Cheyenne were potentially in the area.  Blackfoot would be farther north I believe than where we are starting.

Deathnote

I'm considering playing a Totem Warrior from China who came to America five years ago in order to find work.

Muse

Ah.  :)  New mexico.  A little way from the black hills, then.

  Thanks to reading Fool's Crow I like to think I could do a Blackfoot without being ridiculoulsy inaccurate.  ^_^;;

I'm pretty sure Appache nad publo had their teritory here for a long time, where as some others (tigua in el paso, for example, IIRC) were forcefully relocated, which lead to some conflict with the earlier inhabitents.   Anyways.

I'll crack my books and take a look around.

Jaded, are there any books you're not using?  For example, can we use Magic Box?  Or merits from the Angel book?  Perhaps--for those who are working wtih actualy supernatural beings--the ones that make that more interestgin?

Ooh, I'd love to play as well. Was thinking a Annie Oakley-esque gunslinger sort, maybe?

I'd love to be able to use the ANGEL books, especially Encyclopaedia Demonica..

Also, I think a group game would be better served by not have the Slayer be a PC. I think there's more advantages in having her be controlled by the GM.

Alternatively you could have a Hero-centric game, with each of us being a clockwork Robot, the Slayer, a Totem Warrior, a (Half) Demon, a Werewolf, etc ;)

Also if anyone wants a copy of the sadly unreleased supplements for either the BtVS or ANGEL RPGs, let me know as otherwise they're just wasting away in Eden Studios old playtest group :(

I have: Welcome To Sunnydale; Tea & Crossbows; Military Monsterhunters; Investigators Casebook; and Encyclopaedia Demonica (2nd last playtest release).

I feel like the slayer could be a PC, I feel like the GM would have a lot to do if s/he controlled the main hero, main villain, and the surrounding atmosphere. This is totally biased though, because I really want to write the slayer. :)

Are the only books I have access to.  So Angel stuff would not be allowed unfortunately.

Yeah.  I am going back and forth on the Slayer.  If the player dropped it would be a pain for various reasons, but I'm not a big fan of running a major protagonist.

Did you have anything specific in mind for a Slayer?

Alias

Now that you mention it. :)

I'll pm it to you, just in case it makes me look stupid in one way or another. I'm a gigantic buffy freak, and I feel like I could do some serious justice to the role of the slayer.

Quote from: Jaded on November 22, 2015, 11:07:56 PMWhy were they unreleased?
Because when the print copy of Welcome to Sunnydale was finished, there was a huge argument over whether to do a PDF only release or risk doing another print run which would cost Eden Studios a lot of money; remember this was ten years ago before PDFs were as popular a distribution model even though they'd found success with DriveThruRPG; but also this was exacerbated because WtS wasn't guaranteed to be a big seller because a fair bit of its content, BtVS Season 6 & 7 content specifically, had also made it into the Revised Corebook released before it.

The Investigators Casebook for Angel was the next to be released after that, but they actually wanted to do a print run of that book and had to resolve the WtS issue first.  Sadly the issue was not resolved before the license with Fox came up for renewal and ultimately the BtVS and ANGEL RPGs weren't proving financially successful enough to warrant the cost... so the remaining supplements have remained shelved.

As a Eden Studios playtester I have back-ups of all the unreleased supplements, thought granted only the second most recent copy of Encyclopaedia Demonica, and honestly screw the NDA I signed all those years ago, if George wants to sue me over lost revenue he's welcome to try.  I'd rather see that every fan of the RPGs got to see all the hard work that was put into these unreleased supplements!!!

So, I have two ideas running around in my head:

Nalin's name meand maiden.  Before Nalin started to develop, the joke was they called her that so they could tell she wasn't a boy.  She boys' games and girls' with equal skill.  Her uncle Nantan trained her at the same time as her older brother, Elan.  By seventeen Nalin was equaly skilled as hunter and cook, warrior and craftswoman.

It was then that an unatural creature tore Nalin apart in the night.  While the rest of the band packed up and moved on in search of a safer camp, Nalin tracked the creature to a white man's town, where she didn't know if it was hiding amongst them or preyinng on them too...

*  *  *

Back east, there's a scuessful dime novelist named Nathan Chase.  Most people don't know that Nathan has been cowriting with his daughter Mindi since she was fifteen.  For the last two years, Nathan CHase has been all but a pen name for Mindi.  With the west shrinking, Mindi has gone west--as her father did for a few years at the start of his career--in preperation for starting a career of her own.
