Hello friends,

As we are nearing a time-transition in Arcadia, Aethyrium and I thought it would be a worthy time to remind everyone of the ongoing game.  This would be an excellent time to join our active player base!

We have worked to make Arcadia a game where players have the opportunity to participate in game-wide plots, write stories with each other, and work closely with the GMs to develop their characters.  Some of the goings-on include students finishing up a Labryinth-like contest where the winner gets a magical relic, characters battling with strange beings thought to be barred from entering Arcadia’s grounds, and characters trapped in pocket realms as a side-effect of learning the perils magic.  We encourage players to work with us to world-build, one example of which can be seen in the player-proposed fraternity and sorority now integrated within the game.  We provide clear ways for characters to advance in their abilities so that their power grows alongside their story, and even have a dedicated NPC in place to help them along this path.

In short, we feel that whether you want to be part of an epic tale, or simply want to tell the story of a Changeling navigating the perils of an extraordinary college-life, we have a place for you!

Thank you for your interest, and please do not hesitate to contact Aethyrium or myself with any questions that you may have.  If you want to join in, but are uncertain of where to start, please let us know.  We are happy to work with you in order to find a concept that you are happy with, which can be quickly involved in our many plots and goings-on!

Faeries, come take me out of this dull world,
For I would ride with you upon the wind,
Run on the top of the disheveled tide,
And dance upon the mountains like a flame.

—William Butler Yeats, "The Land of Heart's Desire"

And so arrive the nervous and the watchful, the meek and the powerful. Dublin International sees many and more in the days leading into Autumn's first gasp; many to the point that what is but a handful more? No matter their appearance or their origins, they come. Seeking answers, or tutelage. Seeking control. Seeking Arcadia. It is a simple thing, to seek.. yet it is one fraught with danger and risk. For those that step between the barriers of hither and thither for shall forever be lost betwixt, in mind if not in body. Those Changelings so stolen by the Fae are in a way cursed to never feel at home except among members of their own kind--the Faerie.

So do you, seek? Do you feel as if your skin is too small for your body, as if there is a weight lodged within your chest and you are as if a moment frozen in time, a trapped scream in amber? Do you seek counsel, and training? Then come, oh ye kin. Find your place through the Glamours and mist. We of the Courts will teach and guide you, until you are able to once more take your place. For yours is a soul entwined with Fae, and ever is that bondage inescapable.

For it is inescapable. You are Changeling, you are Fae. Perhaps you lost precious little; hours? A day? Perhaps you were with us for longer. Weeks? Months? Years? What is time to our nature, after all. The time may seem as smoke to you, elusive and difficult to grasp. A half-forgotten dream. Though perhaps you wish otherwise, that time changed you irrevocably. Changeling. Fae-Touched. There are names for your kind, for our kind. Not all of them pleasant. But the truth at the heart of it all is that you are different, special. You have powers that others do not, and your soul is as tied to a story as not. Ours are people of legend and myth, whose magic is written in song and ink.

We would educate you. Inform you of your nature, instruct you in the magic that touches all of Creation. We bid you welcome. And so you arrive, nervous or watchful, meek or powerful... at Dublin International. Ending as we began, as all stories are but circles upon the wheel. We bid you welcome... to Arcadia.

Hello, and welcome! If that piqued your interest, I'm glad you've stayed around to listen to me ramble. You're probably asking what this game is, and the simple, broadly correct answer is 'Fae Hogwarts'. It's a school for Changelings, people who were stolen away from their parents at some point in their history. This may have been for hours, day, weeks, years... How it impacted you and your family is up to you to decide; when you got 'back', were they even still living in the same place? Changelings come from all over the planet to the school of Arcadia, in order to be taught control of their powers. Each of the Changelings have been stolen by the Fae, imbued with a Faerie soul and Glamour. Though Changelings typically don't have solid memories of their initial time with the Fae, they often do have hazy and enigmatic recollections in their dreams. You are a new student, setting out on this wondrous journey.

So long as Changelings possess Glamour, they are truly part of two worlds. These 'stolen' children are often haunted by vivid dreams, spectral visions and voices, and feelings of alienation. These tend to get progressively worse as the Dreaming calls to them; relief comes when a Fae (most often an agent of the school) imbues them with a touch of their glamour. Upon doing so the Fae soul blossoms, where the child can see themselves and those around them with full Fae eyes. The timing of this varies, though almost always occurs between the sixteenth and twenty-four birthdays. Still, there are the rare exceptions whose visit is delayed by years, even decades. The school insists that each Changeling is awakened at the right and destined moment; those who find themselves alienated for years by their visions, however, sometimes question if they had been forgotten, or worse.

Nevertheless they walk, act, and naturally sense these two realities as if they are one. There is the world of the mundane, the human world that they were first born into. It still gives them a face, a body, a family and home. This is the physical world that we all touch, smell, hear and see.

For the Changelings, however, there is a second world. They see fantastical bodies of their dreaming selves; these are the images of the Fae souls that were once melded with theirs. Those Fae bodies grew up as their mortal shells did. Unlike the mortal forms, though, these Fae souls often have fantastical shapes that provide magic-like powers, brilliant auras, and other sensory effects. Similarly, with their Fae eyes, Changelings are able to see constructs of glamour that are lost to the mortal world. Though rare in the modern world, these Fae-made structures can look like towering castles, floating clouds that may be perched upon, or displays of skyline-spanning magical lights.

Arcadia itself is hidden by glamour. Where normal humans see one thing, changelings see quite another.

Where humans see ruins, Changelings are able to pierce the Glamour and see the truth of the building. It's a large structure made of gleaming marble, seemingly defying gravity and physics.

Magic is a multi-faceted subject. Changelings possess the power to manipulate the fabric of Creation, and must be taught to do so. Though at first glance this may seem complex, it is really quite simple. First, select a Seeming. These are mostly 'Fae type' categories, but the examples within each Seeming are not the be all and end all. Get creative! Second, select 3 Books of Magic. Assign your Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary choices. These are categories of magic that you wish to specialize in and create Spells for. These will be listed below, and again the examples are meant to inspire, not confine. Third, within a Book you may create a Verse, which is in other words a Spell. At the start of the game you will have six Verses, the total of which will be from those 3 Books you selected. Finally, every Verse will have a Bunk. The Bunk is, in short, the components of the Spell. These are your Reagents, the Somatic, and Verbal aspects. The more involved the Bunk, the more powerful the Verse.

Characters also have a Glamour stat that represents the connection to the Fae world. It can be replenished by either creating or destroying a work with unique, artistic value. Destroying copies of a work do not count; it must be an original piece. Though societal standards for a great work of art do not always apply, the amount of glamour replenished by a work does appear to often be related to the amount of care and time invested within it. Glamour can be utilized to do one of two things:

  • You may make a creation in the Fae realm. These are the things you see through the Glamour, such as reality-defying constructs, crystal balls, bridges made of peanut brittle, etc. For the purposes of the game, small and personal decorative items may be created by the player without GM intervention. Items with more oomph (such as magic  swords) or pets (such as a unicorn) are technically possible, but doing so at the player character's initial skill would demand a lot of time and Glamour expenditure.

  • You may bring a non-Changeling into the Dreaming (that is, the Fae realm). You imbue an object with Glamour and hand it to them, which allows them to see and interact with the Faerie realms until the stroke of midnight. At that point they will lose the Fae sight, and begin to forget the fantastical experiences they encountered.

Finally on the topic of magic, if pressed characters are also able to Sacrifice and pull on their magic in desperation to cast a spell when they are unable to do a Bunk. It is, however, extremely dangerous as it is not shaping the magic of Creation, but rather the magic within the Changeling. Doing so runs the risk of permanently exhausting those internal reserves. Draw too deeply, and you will sever your connection to the Dreaming and become mortal. You will live out the rest of your life in a passionless state, as memories of the Fae fade and everything becomes dull and gray.

On that last cheerful note, listed below are both the Seeming and the various Books of Magic.

Each Changeling is associated with a Seeming. Though they may not remember it, they held a place in faerie society during the time they were stolen in childhood. It was during this time that the soul of a fae was melded with their own being, creating something different than who they were before. The world of the fae tends to be much more visually diverse; some have animal characteristics and others look more human. Some have wings while others look more or less like an elemental construct. Due to this diversity, Changelings are not thought of in terms of races. They are, however, grouped together by Seemings, a term that refers to certain common ground in personality, ideology, and sometimes appearance. The Dreaming is far too chaotic to deal in absolutes, however; Seemings are ultimately determined by inside qualities. That is to say, two Changelings with similar appearance may have very different Seemings.

The Tricksters
The Tricksters — The Tricksters — The Tricksters are those fae associated with questioning social norms, playing pranks (both harmless and harmful,) and challenging what is. They are often acknowledged as light-hearted and sometimes child-like pranksters, yet others speak of those among their ranks whose 'pranks' involve both destruction and acts of social-upheaval. Some fae creates often found among the trickster archetypes include coyotes, kitsune, pookas, demons, and magical clowns.
The Fairest
The Fairest — The Fairest are those fae associated with beauty, seduction, and passive charisma. They can be either wicked queens, distressed squires in need of saving, or tempters. Sirens, fairy tale princes and princesses, incubi, succubi, muses, and seductive plant-oriented creatures are often found among the fairest archetype.
The Sages
The Sages — The sages are those fae associated with counsel, and fonts of wisdom. They are often considered great minds and advisors. However, they are also regarded as sometimes calloused and traitorous, using their acumen to pull at strings others can't see.  Swamp witches, magic mirrors, court advisors, wizened hags, and manifestations of the undead are often found among the sage archetype.
The Warriors
The Warriors — The warriors are those fae associated with might, protectors to the ideals they hold. They are often considered crucial due to their physical prowess and high level of dedication to a cause. However, they also are often considered narrow-minded and brutish, quick to result to muscle in any situation. Ogres, avenging archangels, minotaurs, and beings of herculean physique are often found among the warrior archetype.
The Wyld
The Wyld — The wyld are the non-conformists and iconoclasts that rarely follow the rules. Their personalities are often described as magnetic, fun to be around, and intense. However, they often are criticized for ignoring rules that are put in place for good reason, and being poor future planners. Anthropomorphic animals, chimeras, and glamour constructions resembling great cavemen and hunters are often found among the wyld archetype.
The Forgers
The Forgers — The forgers the craftsmen and women in the realm of the fae. Their ability to create out of both physical material and glamour is considered unparalleled. However, they are often criticized for their fanaticism, willing to sacrifice their health, themselves, and the resources around them to create their art. Goblins, Gremlins, Kobolds, and boggans are often found among the forgers archetype.

Much like the glamour that comes from being a Changeling allows your character to view Arcadia in its full grandeur, the same ‘faerie eyes’ allow your character to be seen as their Seeming.  The Seeming is a reflection of your character’s faerie self – other Changelings can see past the mortal world, seeing both the human and faerie sides of an individual at once.  Generally speaking, the Seeming will always follow their owner: when they take a step, it takes the same step.  If the human lifts their fork, so does their seeming.  There are those exceptional moments where this is not the case, and it is often believed that those are truest reflections of the faerie side.

It is said that within the high library of Arcadia, there lies tomes of every spell that mortal or fae alike have ever dreamt of, told in a story, or simply imagined. Perhaps more accurately, it is many volumes that are produced over time, manifestations of glamour themselves. Nonetheless, the art of fae magic is the art of connecting with the pages of these books from far distances, understanding their demands, and unlocking their power.

For this reason, magic is taught and lumped into categories according to these epic volumes.

1. Where was your character born?  Whom, if anyone, would be considered 'family'? Klaude was born in Wolfsburg, Germany.  Like many in the city, his father (Stefan) was employed within the auto industry; it was a job that afforded the family a markedly upper-class lifestyle.  Klaude is the oldest of three siblings, all of which are boys.  Klaude's mother, Isa, worked as a curator in the 'Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg', a local museum of modern art.
2. At what age was your character abducted by the fae; how long were they gone?  Did their family or life change in any significant way upon their return? Klaude was abducted by the fae when he was seven years old.  He was missing for a total of eight months.  His family had used their considerable wealth to generate a notable media storm in the area about his disappearance and subsequent return.  Klaude was quite fond of the attention upon the return due to having been in a multi-child family where both parents worked.  As attention began to stray from him and life returned to normal, Klaude began making up stories of his abduction, though he remembered nothing.  These stories ultimately implicated a couple his father worked with, though Klaude was unable to keep a consistent story, and so they were soon released.  Humiliated being caught in a lie, and disgruntled that life began to normalize, Klaude developed a rebellious streak.
3. Name one way your character reacted to the stress of feeling different while growing up.  This can be destructive or creative, or considered healthy or unhealthy. Klaude engaged in a bit of a silent rebellion as he reached adolescence.
Though he was never one to overtly misbehave, he often cut classes, experimented with illegal substances, and would be gone for all hours.  He was drawn to social activities, and found enjoyment in both his school's debate club and acting.

4. Changelings are awakened to their power by being infused with glamour for the first time; this is often done by an agent of the school intending to recruit them.  What age did this happen, and how did your character react to the news? Klaude was nineteen when he first was approached by an agent of Arcadia, a professor by the name of Irene Byrne.  After his initial astonishment, he grew to believe that the fact he was truly fae royalty only made sense.  (It was not so much that he was informed he was royalty, but he somewhat has assumed it.  Now he would be quite difficult to convince otherwise.)  He welcomed the opportunity to study in Dublin.
5. Describe some of the ambitions, goals, or hopes your character has as they are schooled by the Fae. Klaude wishes to be an active student, and learn not only about powers, but also the politics and mechanisms that make up the school and the hidden world beyond.  He considers himself a natural leader and wishes to identify flaws in the system and helpfully fix them.  Nonetheless, he is somewhat of a traditionalist and has aspirations to side himself with those that have a similarly classic outlook.
6. Upon awakening some Changelings begin to remember their time in Arcadia when they did not have a human body.  Please briefly describe any memories of this time that your character currently has; or, if they do not have any recollections, please say so. Thus far, Klaude has had less full memories and more simple impressions.  He recalls the scent of smoke tinged with sugared rose petals and tobacco.  He can feel the weight of a heavy chair underneath him, and remembers the sun pouring in through intricate stained-glass windows.  He recalls the patterns of colors those windows made on the floor when the sun poured in.  He remembers feeling powerful.

No need to be shy, and let me know what I can do to help.  I might just need to reword a couple of things, so please speak up where you are confused.  If you would prefer PM me and we can work through a character together, always happy to see you around!

Aww you so sweet, I have an idea percolating as we speak. I'm trying to understand the bunks and verses thing. Is it basically the bunks are what she'd need to do to make the verses(powers) happen. And I just make up verses that make sense under the particular magical category? Please correct me if I am way off base hehe Also sorry if this sounds stupid. :)

I am working on a post that will take a bit more time explaining them to people, but in the mean time I wanted to save you some time and say:  Yes.  That is it exactly.  They are what you have to do to make your powers happen.  They are left for characters to make up, so that they hopefully feel like they make sense to your character.  (For example, my 'peacock king' character in the above post would assumedly feel at home taking a seat at the head of a table, since that implies power, authority, and draws the attention of others.)

Hello Everyone,

Since a couple of questions have surfaced in regards to Bunks, I wanted to try and clarify what they were.

A bunk is something your character does in order to use a Verse (or 'magic'.)  They can be physical activities, gestures, or simply utiilizing an object.  The application will ask players to come up with some simple activities, as well as some that are more complex.

Let's sort of look at the process in action using the character sheet example in the post.

We have Klaude, who has a verse that allows him to know the titles of ever person in the room.  He is in a busy setting and would like to do just that.

Klaude realizes that in order to activate that particular magic, he must first use one of his bunks.  Being that it is a fairly small spell, Klaude reasons he would like a simple bunk to go along with it. He has several to choose from; for instance, he can pluck a feather from his plume.

In the end, though, Klaude chooses to sit at the head of a table.  He wants the attention of others anyway.  Klaude pulls a chair up and sits at the head of a table, fulfilling his bunk requirements, and thus is able to sense the professional titles of everyone nearby.  Furthermore, he realizes that he will not be able to sit at the head of the table again to perform any more magic until the next day.

Perhaps this makes sense?

Bunks shouldn't stress anyoine out.  They are something I heavily adapted from the Changeling: The Dreaming game as a way to give a certain sense of ritual and theatrics to your character's magic.  Ideally, they should simply provide a little bit of color for your character.  For instance, being a 'Peacock King' archetype, many of Klaude's bunks are about drawing attention to himself in some way.

I know that one of you who said they were having difficulties has since sent me some beautiful examples, so I appreciate the effort!  I hope this helps!

Actually, I do have a question or two.

Is this going to be a sandbox game or a guided campaign type game?
Every pc is starting out as a first year no matter their ages right? So someone could play a 17 year old and another is 24, but they'd be in the same year?
But more importantly, does this dress make my butt look big?

Seduce my mind and my body will follow.

I had to reread that like five times because I thought you were asking if a dress made you look like a butt plug. I am too tired. Quill need more sleep.

There will be a collection of sandbox threads, in addition to GM-sponsored content.  I find this usually the right balance for a game since players want to write and explore on their own, while a progressing story keeps things feeling fresh.

The average is 18-24 but a starting character could be 72.  That 72 year old might have some questions and feel more than a little irate having been 'left behind' that long, though...  A fae-in-training is a fae-in-training regardless of their age.  Unfortunately, just because someone is ten years older doesn't mean that they can somehow intuit what a class filled with twenty year old's contains.  So, short answer: Yes, they are in the same class.  Here is a blip that will hopefully help:

QuoteThe timing of this varies, though almost always occurs between the sixteenth and twenty-four birthdays. Still, there are the rare exceptions whose visit is delayed by years, even decades. The school insists that each Changeling is awakened at the right and destined moment; those who find themselves alienated for years by their visions, however, sometimes question if they had been forgotten, or worse.

Amarlo

Yeah, I saw that. I just wanted to make sure. All of the above sounds good to me, at least. ^^

I just wanted to give a heads up on some dates since I've gotten some great applications in.

I will start accepting players and put up an OOC Room to begin interactions and planning on Tuesday, the 13th.

Unless I see a reason to change it (eg a bunch of expected apps needing an extension,) soft IC will open Monday the 19th.

Applications will be accepted after that date, however if you want in when the doors open, please see that I have time to approve your sheet before then.

I would love to have some feedback on it!
