Putting this out there since I have been playing Star Trek Online a lot lately and this is an old story which has been kicking about.  The year will be 2371 and there are events which are heating up the both the Alpha and Beta Quadrant.  In the middle of all this new turmoil between the Klingon Empire and a former vassal of theirs, the Lyrian Star Empire.  The Lyrians have made successfully seceded from the Klingons, and after the Kessok Affair in the Maelstrom system, the last thing the region of space needs is conflict and uncertainty.

As a result, Deep Space Twelve is getting an upgrade, and the newly reformed Twelfth Fleet under the command of Admiral Alice Liu.  The U.S.S. Sovereign is named the flagship of the fleet, and other famous ships have been assigned to the fleet, such as the U.S.S. Hornet, Nightingale, and the Lyla James, all ships with Commendations of Valor for their actions in recent conflicts.  However, like everyone in the Alpha and Beta Quadrant, the Federation suffered severe casualties, and as such shipyards were being pushed beyond capacity to produce ships to account for the shortages and gaps in Star Fleet.

Current open ships are a Sovereign Class Advanced Heavy Cruiser, the U.S.S. Resolute, a Steamrunner Class Advanced Heavy Destroyer, a Akira class escort carrier variant, a Nebula class medical/science cruiser, and a Klingon Defense Force K'Vort class reconnaissance and exploration Bird of Prey.  All are multi-purpose ships to fit any role needed, from scientific exploration to in depth diplomatic state missions.

These will be your stories, your tales on how you and your crew would become the next legendary members of Star Fleet or honored heroes of the Klingon Empire.  In order for it to happen it will need your imagination, your creativity, and your commitment.  I am looking forward to see if anyone else wants to make this take a fictional reality in the Star trek imagined universe.

Players are allowed one Character per active ship, as long as they are not playing the same role (ie if you are the XO of one ship you have to be something other than XO for the other ships.)

This game will be a system game, using Morpheus' Star Trek Adventures RPG.  All books are allowed for the game.   There will be a discord server set up where Character Sheets and game mechanics discussions and Task rolls are carried out.  The story narrative will be in Forum threads  This is not going to come at first come first serve as I do want to have in the game a crew which I think is the right one.  So feel free to pitch me two to three concepts.  You can also pitch the same character concept for different positions.  For example if you wanted to get the XO spot, but are willing to have Chief Tactical Officer, that is fine.  Here is the format to pitch me character concepts.  Also keep in mind it does not mater what position you get as I like to think as a story teller I give everyone a chance to have Big Damn Hero moments.  Something to keep in mind when pitching a concept.  Once I have approved the concept we will move on then to Character Sheets.  I can help with this once you are approved, and when you are I will send out the invites to both the discord server and the character generation link (It creates PDF's and is really slick).

Note: While I am not adverse to smut, this is not a smut oriented game.  This not to say characters are not going to have relationships.  Feel free to do so, only know those scenes will then be spun off into One on One threads and "off screen" of the group game content, and so we are also not halting the game progress because of Oo-max time.  Also this means we do want to keep in the "feel" of Star Trek.  Having an attractive character is fine.  Referring to their package, breasts, open cleavage, or quarter bouncing arse near every pose is not and will turn some players off.  Save such colorful descriptive writing in private One on One threads.

Looking forward to seeing what people come up with.

Character Personnel File
Player ID: Malkavian
Name: Sarah Jessica Myers
Gender: Female
Race: Human

Star Fleet Service Record
Position: Commanding Officer, U.S.S. Resolute
Rank: Captain
Branch of Service: Command
Major: Command - Advanced Tactics

Character Appearance
Height: 5'4"
Weight: 68 kg
Age: 28
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Dark Brown
Build: Athletic
Distinguishing Marks: None

Character Description:

Sarah J. Myers is a striking young woman of mixed Asian descent. She possesses an athletic build and, though not particularly tall, carries herself with a grace and confidence that is utterly captivating. Quick to laugh and generous with her smiles, the young Captain nevertheless commands any room she enters by virtue of her strong voice and raw, radiant charisma.

Personality:
Despite her young age and brief tenure as Captain, Sarah J. Myers has taken to the role like one born to it. Out of uniform and away from the pressures of command, Myers is likable and easy to talk to, understanding and thoughtful; when on duty, she is commanding and confident, and those in her orbit cannot help but trust in her and the orders she issues. Those who know Myers best understand her to be idealistic and resolute, unwavering in her commitment to Starfleet and the principles upon which it was founded.

Other Info: "Sarah Jessica Myers is a 24th century Human female born in San Francisco in the Earth Year 2343. Her parents are Jason Richard Myers and Abigail Myers, both employees of Starfleet Fleet Yards, where they continue to serve with distinction as engineers. According to comments made by Myers during her initial interview for Starfleet, both parents - and their work on Federation ships - were one of the biggest reasons for her pursuing a career as a Starfleet Officer.

"Passing the Entrance Examinations at the age of eighteen with exceptional results, Myers continued to excel throughout her four years at Starfleet Academy. Her talent for leadership and smart, intuitive decision-making made her a natural fit for the Command Track, which she took to with considerable enthusiasm. Her instructors predicted a bright future for her within Starfleet - and no sooner had she graduated did she receive her first assignment aboard the U.S.S. Odyssey under the command of Captain Velik.

"Although Captain Velik was known to be highly critical and exacting of the officers on his vessel, his reports spoke often and glowingly of then-Ensign Myers. In particular, he commended her ability to remain calm under pressure, as well as her analytical and methodical approach to problem-solving. As these qualities are prized by Vulcans, and by Velik in particular, it is unsurprising that he included her more and more frequently on matters relating to the starship's given assignments. It is clear that he valued Myer's input and contributions - as her quick ascension up the chain-of-command aboard the U.S.S. Odyssey demonstrated.

"In the Earth Year 2367, the U.S.S. Odyssey - and her sister ship, the U.S.S. Trafalgar - were the first Federation vessels to encounter the Borg in the Alpha Quadrant - specifically a scout ship sent ahead of the forces that would move on Wolf 359. In the ensuing skirmish, the U.S.S. Trafalgar was severely damaged and rendered defenceless, whilst the U.S.S. Odyssey suffered a direct hit, resulting in the death of Captain Velik and his Executive Officer, Commander Miles Penn. Through necessity, Myers - the most senior officer remaining - assumed command and, through a series of ingenious tactical manoeuvres, managed to cripple the Borg ship, all while keeping the U.S.S. Trafalgar from coming under further enemy fire. As a result of its damaging, the Borg vessel self-destructed, freeing both the Trafalgar and Odyssey to make for the safety of Federation space.

"Before either ship could return, however, the attack on Wolf 359 began in earnest; in response to the news, Myers took the damaged U.S.S. Odyssey into the fray and - despite the considerable damage already done to the Intrepid-class ship - further demonstrated exemplary strategic brilliance throughout the conflict. By the time the fighting had concluded the Odyssey was all but destroyed - yet her crew was alive and largely unscathed, thanks in no small part to the decision-making of her acting-captain.

"In the aftermath of Wolf 359, the U.S.S. Odyssey was removed from service due to its extensive damage, and it's name given to a Galaxy-class in the fleet; her crew was given the opportunity to recuperate on Earth. Captain Velik was honoured posthumously for his courageous actions after Myers delivered a detailed and glowing report on her fallen Commanding Officer's conduct and diligence despite the apparent hopelessness of the situation; the Odyssey's crew, too, was spoken of in the most complimentary of terms, with numerous names being forwarded onto the Admiralty for special mention and acknowledgement.

"For her own part in the conflict with the Borg scout ship, and for her actions during the attack on Wolf 359, Myers was awarded both the Grankite Order of Tactics and the Starfleet Award for Valour, as well as a promotion to Captain - an advancement in rank given with the full and enthusiastic blessing of Starfleet Command. At the time of her ascendance to the position of Commanding Officer, Myers was just twenty-four years old, making her the youngest person in Federation record to ever hold the role.

"Against my personal recommendation, Myers was initially given command only over smaller Federation vessels, both of which were situated away from areas of Federation space where her skills might be put to considerable use. She remained in such isolated placements for four years until the Admiralty finally saw fit to give her a command more beneficial to the Federation - that of the newly-finished Sovereign-class U.S.S. Resolute. With the starship ready for a crew, Myers was recalled to Earth in order to oversee the final stages of its deployment preparation, as well as to approve the assignment of her bridge crew and senior staff.

"On a personal note, it was a pleasure to be the one to reveal to Myers that the Resolute was created using the remnants of the U.S.S. Odyssey she had served upon four years before: it helps to feel a personal connection with your ship, and it was clear from our conversation that the young Captain's enthusiasm for her appointment has heightened considerably in the wake of that revelation." - Admiralty Comments: Fleet Admiral Shanthi

Example of what I am looking for.  As far as the other notes, as long as it is not too crazy, feel free to write as much as you wan.

Character Personnel Pile
Player ID: Blackstone (GM Character)
Name: Alison Coles
Gender: Female
Race: Human

Star Fleet Service Record
Position: Command Bosun, Senior Noncommissioned Officer
Rank: Command Master Chief Petty Officer
Branch of Service: Command, Security, Conn
Major: Conn-Flight Operations shuttle craft

Character Appearance
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 70 kg
Age: 42
Hair Color: Brown with golden highlights
Eye Color: Dark Brown
Build: Fit and athletic
Distinguishing marks: Small scar on right cheek near her mouth

Character Description:

Alison possesses rich, nut brown skin and wavy, crinkly hair which seems wild like a peacock's plume when it is loose and flowing.  Her hair is a rich brown which fades to a near gold color at it tips.  She possesses intense and intelligent eyes which gives the impression sometimes of her knowing something the person she is looking at does not.  While she is lithe, she possesses wide shoulders, and has a fairly compact and dense muscle mass which surprises many people the first time they engage her in hand to hand combat.  She possessed near limitless amounts of endurance and can run or operate at highly physical activities for hours before becoming fatigued.

Personality:
Command Chief Coles has been around for a long while, and knows the ins and out of Star Fleet.  As such he possesses keen judgment and knows when it is time to stick to the letter of the regulations, and when it is a teaching moment for one of her junior enlisted.  She possesses a fiercely loyalty, and dedicated to the mission which is Starfleet.  She is not quick to anger, but she does not shy away from combat either, seeing it as her duty to protect the senior officers on an away mission if the situation turns hostile.  Her one true love in life is flying however, and whenever she gets the chance, she does so, preferring the use of shuttlecrafts to transporters when given the choice.  Her one flaw is a severe bias against Cardacians, though she never explains why.

Other Info: Alison Coles ahs served on a number of ships during her twenty-four service in Starfleet, and has had a long and distinguished career.  Some of the more notable ships she has served on have been the Hawking, Saipan, Grayson, Stargazer, and Chekov.  She has been involved in several first contact missions, but her two medals of valor come from combat.  The first was during the Cardacian War, when on an away mission Chief Coles lead a security and search and rescue team on a hostile planet to rescue crew members from the U.S.S. Tarawa which had to abandon ship in the battle of Trevor's Star.  The second commendation came when she was serving onboard the U.S.S Chekov which had encountered the Borg.  Chief Coles organized the near complete crew evacuation of the ship onto shuttles and lead the convoy out of danger.  The Chekov did survive the battle, but Chief Coles actions saved hundred of lives during the fight.  The Master's Chie's last assignment was with the U.S.S. Dauntless, which was lost to rogue Cardacian forces during the Kessok Affair.  Master Chief Coles was wounded during the battle, but was evacuated and rescued by the U.S.S. Sovereign.  After a months recovery at Deep Space 12, Alison was assigned to the newly inbound ship, the U.S.S. Resolute.  It does not come as much surprise given her years of experience she would be assigned to the latest Sovereign class ship out of space dock, certain her command and life experiences will have the enlisted crew running smoothly.  Once she hammered out the kinks.

Dancing Lights - possible epilepsy thing?

Outcast

I'm distinctly tempted to apply (most likely going for a Bajoran; a child of interstellar refugees rather than resistance fighters against the Occupation) - but somewhat wary of the impact of my very limited credentials as a Trek fan, in combination with a totally-unfamiliar game system.  ;D

I'll have a better peer at the rules, and try to figure out if I should be looking at a 20 year-old fresh out of the Academy or a veteran officer.

Are there any particular requests / suggestions for roles that would best suit a Bajoran?

If it helps, I'm pretty much a Trek newbie, too, but like what I have seen so far (which is pretty minimal, admittedly). However, I know the system quite well, so can help there.

It would be a learning experience for near everyone, but come on Outcast, you know you want to go down that rabbit hole with me.  :)

Quote from: Outcast on March 06, 2021, 07:11:16 AMAre there any particular requests / suggestions for roles that would best suit a Bajoran?

I don't know much about them beyond their pre-War occupation by the Cardassians, and their belief in the Prophets. But any role could work, I think, given that the only claimed roles so far are Captain and Command Bosun?

BlackStone

I have someone putting together a Chief Medical Officer., other then that sky is the limit.  Bajoran wormhole happened two years before the year the game so there would be bajoran officers in Star Fleet, at least more than there was during TNG.

Outcast

The Occupation seems to have been in place for ~40 years until it ended in '69, so even a 40 year-old character could have been born to refugee parents; even one several years older than that might not remember Bajor itself.  That gives me quite enough scope to pick an age that best suits whatever the character turns out to be.

I've skimmed through the chargen rules and had a peer at the system mechanics.  It seems to be the case that any species can do pretty much any role as well as anyone else, which is an unusual (but nice) design choice!  I just didn't want to sign up for something that might seem interesting, only to wind up hurting the party because my chosen species was deemed perpetually inferior in a given field.

I'm somewhat tempted to go for either Conn or Security (to try to get away from my usual diplomacy & healing people paths) as the prime focus.  Though I'm a little wary of being any sort of combatant in a Trek game, let alone one taking place on a forum, both Diciplines do seem to provide a range of interesting options for unusual uses.  But either a chief of security or

Nice. I don't know much about Trek (still learning), but I liked the Bajoran occupation storyline. :D

Outcast

I've bookmarked (on Netflix) a The Next Generation episode that apparently introduced the whole storyline, before DS9 made it the foundation of the backstory for its 'local space' setting.

I figured that seeing the introduction of it all might be illuminating.  And easier to manage than 'watch all of DS9'. ;D

What episode is that? I should do the same.

Raziel

While it helps setup the story, the Bajorians weren't really covered and explored until Deep Space Nine, that being said there are some key episodes of DS9 that cover the Bajorians. Season 1, Episode 9 of DS9 called Duet might be a good one to check out and DS9 Season 5, Episode 8 called Things Past as well  If you haven't yet I'd recommend  at the very least reading up on the The Occupation if you haven't since that a key part of Bajorian history. In fact the episode Things Past is set during the Occupation so it would show you a little of what life was like for Bajorians during those times.

"Ensign Ro" - Season 5, Episode 3.  Introduced one of the big fan-favourite characters I've heard enthused about over the years (Ro Laren), as well as the Bajor-Cardassia situation, the existence of refugee camps, terrorists, Bajorans in Starfleet, etc.

I've seen a random assortment of DS9 episodes over the years and have picked up a moderate understanding of things, though I've also been doing research online today.  I didn't want to get caught up in specific events and timings on Bajor - hence some of the appeal to having come from a refugee settlement.  The Federation might well seem like a very good way out of a bad situation, and offer at least a faint hope of helping to influence it to help.  That it's now (by the time of the game) doing so, with the end of the Occupation and friendly contact established with Bajor, will be very welcome. :)

Some things are not set in stone.  Right now I believe forum posts which tell only the dramatic story telling is better than one which has the story and game mechanics in the same post.  Shoving the game mechanics such as "I pull a Sulu and stab the Cardass8an through the heart" and roll dice can be more flexible hashed out on a discord channel.  We can plot ahead of time, roll dice, and players can write their post knowing if they passed or failed.

BlackStone

Speaking of DS 9, anything after season 3 happens after events 8n game, and the Voyager mission hasn't happened yet.   Star Trek Generations has. Star Trek First Contact not yet.

Malkavian

No doubt Myers will want to speak with the Bajoran character in-depth about the occupation and such, where comfortable/possible. Being that she is pretty much a mesh-up of Kirk and Picard (two arguably polar opposites), she's as curious as she is pragmatic, and it helps to learn about things like this, even if it doesn't relate to the immediate mission (at least not outside of similarities with someone breaking away from the Klingons).

Looking forward to the Discord channel coming up so we can discuss this all in more depth. :D I might finally be able to play in a Star Trek game properly!
